Global warming may or may not be the great environmental cri

global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but — regardless of whether it is or isn’t — we won’t do much about it. we will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments(承诺) to avoid it. but the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less l ikely they are to be observed.
al gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth,” as if merely recognizing it could put us a path to a solution. but the real truth is that we don’t know enough to relieve global warming, and — without major technological breakthroughs — we can’t do much about it.
from 2003 to 2050, the world’s population is projected to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. if energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions(排放) (mainly, co2) will be 42% higher in 2050. but that’s too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. we need economic growth unless we condemn the world’s poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone else’s living standards. with modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050.
no *** will adopt rigid restrictions on economic growth and personal *** (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. still, politicians want to show they’re “doing something.” con sider the kyoto protocol(京都议定书). it allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn’t. but it hasn’t reduced co2 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories(签字国) didn’t adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets.
the practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.
the trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when it’s really an engineering one. the inconvenient truth is that if we don’t solve the engineering problem, we’re helpless.
46. what is said about global warming in the first paragraph?
a. it may not prove an environmental crisis at all.
b. it is an issue requiring worldwide commitments.
c. serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it.
d. very little will be done to bring it under control.
47. according to the author’s understanding, what is al gore’s view on global warming?
a. it is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.
b. it is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.
c. it is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.
d. it is an area we actually have little knowledge about.
48. g reenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of ________.
a. economic growth
b. wasteful use of energy
c. the widening gap between the rich and poor
d. the rapid advances of science and technology
49. the author believes that, since the signing of the kyoto protocol, ________.
a. politicians have started to do something to better the situation
b. few nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy use
c. reductions in energy consumption (消耗) have greatly cut back global warming
d. international cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems
50. what is the message the author intends to convey?
a. global warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.
b. the ultimate solution to global warming lies in new technology.
c. the debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.
d. people have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming.

Cutting global warming pollution would not only make the pla
Cutting global warming pollution would not only make the planet healthier, it would make people healthier too, new research suggested.
Cutting carbon dioxide emissions could save millions of lives, mostly by reducing preventable deaths from heart and lung diseases, according to studies released Wednesday and published in a special issue of The Lancet, a British medical journal.
"Relying on fossil fuels leads to unhealthy lifestyles, increasing our chances of getting sick and in some cases takes years from our lives," US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a telecast briefing from her home state of Kansas. "As greenhouse gas emissions go down, so do deaths from cardiovascular(心血管) and respiratory(呼吸道) diseases. This is not a small effect."
Instead of looking at the health ills caused by future global warming, as past studies have done, this research looks at the immediate benefits of doing something about the problem, said Linda Birnbaum, director of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
Some possible benefits seemed highly speculative, the researchers conceded, based on people driving less and walking and cycling more. Other proposals studied were more concrete and achievable, such as reducing cook stoves that burn dung(粪便), charcoal and other polluting fuels in the developing world.
And cutting carbon dioxide emissions also makes the air cleaner, reducing lung damage for millions of people, doctors said.
"Here are ways you can attack major health problems at the same time as dealing with climate change," said lead author Dr. Paul Wilkinson, an environmental epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Wilkinson said the individual studies came up with numbers of premature deaths prevented or extra years of life added for certain places.
For example, switching to low-polluting cars in London and Delhi, India, would save 160 lost years of life in London and nearly 1,700 in Delhi for every million residents, one study found. But if people also drove less and walked or biked more, those extra saved years would soar to more than 7,300 years in London and 12,500 years in Delhi because of less heart disease.
小题1:What does the passage mainly talk about? _______.
A.How can people live longer?
B.Cutting carbon dioxide emissions saves lives.
C.Global warming threatens people’s lives.
D.People should stop relying on fossil fuels.
小题2:The new research differs from past studies in that _______.
A.it focuses on the immediate benefits of cutting carbon dioxide emissions
B.it studies the bad effects arising from future global warming
C.it is believed by more people
D.it mainly targets at developing countries
小题3:According to Kathleen Sebelius, _______.
A.sometimes it takes years to see the bad effects caused by consuming fossil fuels
B.without greenhouse gas emissions, people would not die of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases
C.the main reason why people get sick is that they rely on fossil fuels
D.deaths from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are closely related to greenhouse gas emissions
小题4: Which of the following is the most practical way to cut carbon dioxide emissions according to the passage? _________.
A.Driving less
B.Walking and cycling as much as possible.
C.Stopping using fossil fuels
D.Reducing the use of polluting fuels to cook.
小题5:It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A.London and Delhi have already benefited from reducing greenhouse gas emissions
B.switching to low-polluting cars would save 160 lives in London each year
C.walking and biking instead of driving will reduce the chance of heart disease
D.attacking health problems and dealing with climate change are contradictory

Nearly all scientists agree that the planet is warming. What is still open for debate is how much of the warming is due to human activites, and what all the potential effects will be worldwide. The Pentagon commissioned a report on the possibility of rapid climate change -- in particular examining the collapse of the north atlantic thermohaline conveyor (a process that delivers warmth from the gulf stream to Europe).
The report looks at historica precendent for such significant events, of which there are a few. The good news is that life survived all those previous events, the bad news is that there could be significant negative political and economic consequences to such a rapid shift.
In terms of what we can do, everyone can work to reduce carbon emissions... but we need to realize that such a fix will not stop warming for quite some time. Current models show that even with a complete halt to human based carbon emissions, that the world would not stop warming for decades. This same lag effect has made it difficult for scientists to finally agree that long term warming was taking place. Now we have enough data to be pretty sure on that, but we don't have many solutions as how to significantly slow the warming.
Ultimately, it would be ideal for the human race to move toward energy and economic growth solutions that would sustainable in the long long term (centuries or more)... To reach that state we need to move entirely to renewable energy sources and close the loop on materials and toxics used in manufacturing. This will probably take at least 50-100 years, but we'll never get there unless we start... and not getting there is not really an option for the human race as a whole.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING?
Dear Earth Care,
I am doing a project on behalf of my school about global warming. Sometimes I feel that individuals can have little effect on such huge environmental problems. However, 1 still think people should advocate improvements in the way we use energy today. As I'm not sure where to start with my project, I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
Thank you!
Ouyang Guang
Dear Ouyang Guang,
There are many people who have a commitment like yours, but they do not believe they have the power to do anything to improve our environment. That is not true. Together, individuals can make a difference. We do not have to put up with pollution.
The growth of the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide in the air actually comes as a result of many things we do every day. Here are a few suggestions on how to reduce it. They should get you started with your project.
1 We use a lot of energy in our houses. It is OK to leave an electrical appliance on so long as you are using it - if not, turn it off! Do not be casual about this. So if you are not using the lights, the TV, the computer, and so on, turn them off. If you are cold, put on more clothes instead of turning up the heat.
2 Motor vehicles use a lot of energy- so walk or ride a bike if you can.
3 Recycle cans, bottles, plastic bags and newspapers if circumstances allow you to. It takes a lot of energy to make things from new materials, so, if you can, buy things made from recycled materials.
4 Get your parents to buy things that are economical with energy - this includes cars as well as smaller things like fridges and microwaves.
5 Plant trees in your garden or your school yard, as they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and refresh your spirit when you look at them.
6 Finally and most importantly, be an educator. Talk with your family and friends about global warming and tell them what you have learned.
Remember - your contribution counts!
Earth Care

Global Warming and the Greenhouse EffectThe Earth is kept warm by it's atmosphere, which acts rather like a woolly coat - without it,the average surface temperature would be about -18 degrees Centigrade.Heat from the sun passes through the atmosphere, warming it up,and most of it warms the surface of the planet. As the Earth warms up,it emits heat in the form of infra-red radiation - much like a hot pan emits heat even after it's taken away from the cooker. Some of this heat is trapped by the atmosphere, but the rest escapes into space. The so-called "greenhouse gases" make the atmosphere trap more of this radiation,so it gradually warms up more than it should, like a greenhouse (although a greenhouse actually does this by stopping warm air rising and escaping from it). What Causes The Greenhouse Effect? There are some natural greenhouse gases:water vapour, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone. However, over the past fifty years, production of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane has risen sharply, and a new type of chemical - the chlorofluorocarbon,or CFC - has been introduced as a refrigerant, solvent and aerosol propellant, but it is also a very powerful greenhouse gas, because it can trap a lot of radiation - one molecule of CFC is 12,000 to 16,000 times as effective at absorbing infra-red radiation as a molecule of carbon dixide. This graph shows how much each gas contributes to the greenhouse effect, taking into account how much of it there is and how much radiation it can absorb. The carbon dioxide comes mainly from burning fossil fuels in power stations, which also causes acid rain.It is also created by living animals breathing, and is naturally converted by plants back to oxygen. However, deforestation is reducing the planet's carbon dioxide absoring capability.Nitrous oxide is a by-product of nylon production, and is also released by fertiliser use in agriculture. The extra methane is produced in coal mining, natural gas production and distribution (natural gas is methane),and waste disposal. One fifth of all methane generated by human activity comes from microbial decay of organic material in flooded rice fields. The Greenhouse Effect - Possible SolutionsReducing use of fossil fuels would considerably reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced,as well as reducing the levels of the pollutants which cause acid rain. This can be achieved by either using less energy altogether,or using alternative energy sources. You can help save energy in lots of ways:* Turn off lights when you leave a room
* If you have a car, don't use it for short journeys
* Get your parents to insulate their house properly
* Basically, anything at all that uses less energy

A:Oh,it's so hot!The temperature seems to get higher and higher these days!
B:Yeah, true! How come?!Well, but you reminds me of a news reported yesterday.
A:What is it?
B:It said that there was a trend of global warming since the emission of carbon dioxide was increasing consistently.
A:Will that global warming cause something more annoying than the high temperature?
B:Definitely! As the temperature rises, the glaciers would be melted which is actually taking place, and since more and more glaciers melt, the sea level would rise more thus the citizen who live along the coast would be in danger of being drowned.
A:Oh,that's too bad.Did it say what we can do to prevent that?
B:Hm...Actually we can not totally prevent the trend I think but we can do our best to reduce the individual emission of carbon dioxide to the largest extent, thus the velocity of warming trend would get slower.
A:So what exactly should we do you didn't answer me yet!
B:Hm...Well,electrical energy saving could help, more or less. So,you'd better not sitting in front of the computer the whole day hereafter!
A:For what?

Global warming不用说是不好的,应该找方法解决,do much about it,真是这样吗?we will argue over it 讨论有可能的解决方法,
even, as a nation国家间怎样呢,make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments,这里可能看不懂,常识上国家某某领导人会晤干嘛呢,开会呗,前面说要解决全球变暖,even甚至连国家都很关注.but 是个重点词,前面说的是否能起作用呢,the more...the less...,
A项 requiring worldwide commitments 需要全球关注,关注了那有怎样呢
B项 very little will be done to bring it under control 实质上的行动没有多少,似乎会开得越多问题解决得越少.

Global warmingis a serious problem ,as we all know.We must take immediate action to deal with it .First we should plant more trees to reduce carbon dioxide in the air.Second we should take buses.
Even though global warming may have made the weather more mi

Even though global warming may have made the weather more mild, many animals are still hibernating(冬眠). It’s too bad that humans can’t hibernate. In fact we almost did.
Apparently, at times in the past, farmers in France liked a semi-state of human hibernation. So writes Graham Robb, a British scholar who has studied the sleeping habits of the French farmers. As soon as the weather turned cold, people all over the France shut themselves away and practiced the forgotten art of doing nothing at all for months.
In line with this, Jeff Warren, a producer at CBC Radio’s The Current, tells us that the way we sleep has changed since the invention of lighting.
When historians began studying texts of the Middle Ages, they noticed something referred to as “first sleep”, which was not clarified, though. Now scientists are telling us our ancestors most likely slept in separate periods. The business of eight hours’ continuous sleep is a modern invention.
In the past, without the artificial light, humans went to sleep when it became dark and then woke themselves up around midnight. The late night period was known as “The Watch”. It was when people actually kept watch against wild animals, although many of them simply moved around or visited family and neighbors.
According to some sleep researchers, a short of insomnia(失眠)at midnight is not a disorder. It is normal. Humans can experience another state of consciousness(清醒状态)around their sleeping, which happens in the brief period before we fall asleep or wake ourselves in the morning. This period can be a creative time for some people.
Playing with your sleep rhythms(节奏)can be dangerous, as worry may set in. Medical science doesn’t help much in this case. It offers us medicines for a full night’s continuous sleep, which sounds natural; however, according to Warren’s theory, it is really the opposite of what we need.
小题1:The late night was called “The Watch” because it was a time for people ______.
A.to set time to catch animals
B.to remind others of the time
C.to guard against possible dangers
D.to wake up their family and neighbors
小题2:We can infer from the last paragraph that people should ______.
A.sleep in the way animals do
B.follow their natural sleep rhythms

A.To throw new light on human sleep.

英语翻译Global warming is an increase in the earth's temperature
英语翻译
Global warming is an increase in the earth's temperature due to fuels, industry, and agricultural processes caused by human, natural, and other gas emissions. This results in an increased emission of greenhouse gases.Short-wave solar radiation sinks into the Earth's atmosphere and warms its surface; while long wave infrared radiation emitted by earth's surface is absorbed, and then re-emitted by trace gases.
Climate changes occur in our earth's atmosphere due to a buildup of greenhouse gases.Greenhouse gases can occur naturally as well as a result of human activities.Problems can occur when higher concentrations of greenhouse gases are present in our atmosphere because they have enhanced our earth's heat trapping capability.
There are many misconceptions about global warming. Some believe that pollution causes global warming, but the fact is global warming is the result of burning fossil fuels, coal, and oil that release carbon dioxide.Another misconception is nuclear power causes climate change.Nuclear power actually reduces emissions of carbon dioxide when used in place of coal. Some believe that global warming means that it will become warmer all over. The name is misleading because in some places,it will actually become colder. The majority of scientists believe global warming is a process underway and that it is human-induced.
The greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These gases occur naturally. The Earth uses those gases to warm its surface.Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when solid waste, fossil fuels, wood, and wood products are burned. Each greenhouse gas absorbs heat differently. If natural gases did not occur, the temperatures would be 91.4 degrees cooler than the current temperatures. These gases trap heat and cause the greenhouse effect, rising global temperatures.Human activities add to the levels of these gasses, causing more problems. The burning of solid waste, fossil fuels, and wood products are major causes.
Automobiles, heat from homes and businesses, and factories are responsible for about 80% of today's carbon dioxide emissions,25% of methane, and 20% of the nitrous oxide emissions. The increase in agriculture, deforestation, landfills, industrial production, and mining contribute a significant share of emissions too.The gases released into the atmosphere are tracked by emission inventories. An emission inventory counts the amount of air pollutants discharged into the atmosphere. These emission inventories are used by many organizations.
