Good morning,everyone!The topic of my presentation today is The Sense of Smell.As we all know,our nose has two major functions.One is to act as an interface to allow our body to exchange air with the external world,(这句话很别扭,interface 这个词不太常用,比较生硬,演讲的话应该用比较易懂的词,再就是to重复太多,我觉得可以改成：One is to act as a window/media/tool/(看你想表达的意思了) for our body to exchange air with the external world,)and the other (one可省,加上不够简洁) is to smell odors(多指臭味,不过不改也行吧).How much do you know about our sense of smell?
Human sense of smell can detect thousands of scents,which enables us to distinguish what is fragrant from what is smelly/stinky.It also allows us to detect something that is harmful for our body.There are some other aspects that you may not know.Our sense of smell is not only related to smell,but also related to taste.When you eat,only four tastes,which are sweet,sour,bitter and salt can be detected by you tongue,but all the other tastes are detected by your nose.So,having a good sense of smell can increase your appetite.We tend to eat something that has a pleasant smell,even when we are not hungry.The sense of smell also influences your emotion.For example,the smell of fresh bread drives some people angry,while the smell of lemon gives them a clear mind with high concentration levels.What’s more,our sense of smell plays an important role in love.
We all have (the) bad feelings when catching a cold,so it is not difficult for us to imagine what will happen if a person loses his sense of smell.He could not distinguish the difference between an ice cream and a pile of shit without a bite.He does not know whether he is surrounded by poisonous gas that threatens his life.Without the sense of smell,his sense of taste is so limited that almost all foods taste the same.He can not get the scents of flowers,or the scents of autumn leaves,or the scents of fruits,or the scents of someone’s skin,and so on.In that case,the whole world is tedious.That’s really terrible!
If your sense of smell is not sensitive,you can try to improve it.Here are some tips(更地道,更合适).
The most important one is to avoid substances that can impair/harm/damage your sense of smell,such as smokes,alcohol and some medicines.You should also stay away from foods that make your nose uncomfortable,such as milk,cheese,and ice cream.A person’s sense of smell becomes sharper after exercise,so this advice can also be adopted.Moreover,your sense of smell can be improved if you increase the moisture in your nose,so you can put your nose in front of a cup of hot water for some time every day.Finally,training is the factor most likely to enhance your smell performance.Take short,shallow sniffs instead of long ones to identify smells,just like cats and dogs do.
