One world, One dream. In the coming years, even for decades to come, the four simple English words will be closely, unmistakably linked to the Summer Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games that Beijing will be hosting in 2008.
"One world, One dream" is the slogan for the Beijing 2008 Games. It was announced at a grand ceremony held in the Chinese capital this evening and was broadcast live on CCTV and Beijing TV, the country's two heavyweight broadcasters.
Immediately after the announcement made by Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, a big round of applauses echoed in the Beijing Workers' Indoor Arena, where the ceremony was held.
A promotional video for the Beijing Olympic Games slogan was shown at giant screens erected in the indoor arena. A jubilant mood filled the air, and festive art performances by Chinese and foreign artists followed. China Mobile, one of the official partners for Beijing 2008, sent the slogan, in the form of a short message, to all its subscribers across China only minutes after the slogan was announced.
More than 6,000 guests were present at the slogan announcement ceremony, among whom were Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), and BOCOG First Vice-President Chen Zhili, and representatives from different walks of life, including Beijing-based foreign dignitaries.
"‘One world, One dream' is an embodiment of the wisdom of hundreds of thousands of people," BOCOG President Liu Qi said in his address, "It is a slogan that conveys the lofty ideal of people in Beijing as well as in China to share the global community and civilization and to create a bright future hand in hand with people from the rest of the world. It expresses the firm belief of a great nation, with a long history of 5,000 years and on its way towards modernization, that is committed to peaceful development, harmonious society and people's happiness. It voices the aspirations of 1.3 billion Chinese people to contribute to the establishment of a peaceful and bright world."
"The Olympic Games are unique in their ability to attract the world's attention, using sport to promote peace and understanding. The IOC is delighted that BOCOG's slogan for the 2008 Olympic Games has captured that Olympic spirit," IOC President Jacques Rogge said in a letter of congratulations to BOCOG.
BOCOG issued a call for the slogan on January 1, 2005, and the response was unexpectedly good. By the deadline at 17:30 on January 31, 2005, the office for the Solicitation of Slogans for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games received at least 210,000 entries of slogans that people sent in by 10,123 emails and 10,038 letters.
The letters and emails came from all over the world, including all the provinces and autonomous regions on the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions and Taiwan,as well as the United States, Great Britain, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Cuba, Norway, Brazil and many other countries and regions. Most of the slogans submitted are in Chinese, some are in English, French and Spanish.
After the deadline, BOCOG invited experts in the Olympic studies, sociology, sports, culture and linguistics to evaluate, pre-select, preview all the submissions based on the pre-set standards and in line with the principles of equality and fairness. The finalized slogan is the outcome of collective wisdom.
The slogan Beijing used during its bid campaign was "New Beijing, Great Olympics". It has successfully helped the world to recognize that Beijing, a city with a history of more than 3,000 years and at the heart of China's splendid culture, is also one of the fastest modernizing cities in the world. The new slogan shifted the focus from the city itself to the three concepts of 2008 Games (namely, Green Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics and People's Olympics) and the universal values of the Olympic Movement.
Games organizers have increasingly used Olympic slogans as an important platform to launch their communications campaigns. Slogans from past Games, such as "Share the Spirit" of the 2000 Sydney Games, and "Light the Fire Within" of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games, have caught people's imagination and inspired millions around the world. "Welcome Home" also became a highlight during the Athens Games last summer and was a source of boundless pride for Greeks.

Although the 2008 Olympics are still three years away, another special competition has already started in Beijing. This time, the competitors are not the athletes from all over the world, but the people living in Beijing. The special competition is not held in a stadium, but in every street and every corner of Beijing. I suppose some of you may have already guessed what the special competition is. Yes, it is the competition of protecting our environment and creating a green Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Someone may ask who is our rival in this competition? The modern Los Angeles, the charming Sydney, or the historic Athens? No, none of them. The real rival is ourselves. It is our bad habits of neglecting to protect environment in our daily life.
Several years ago, I was very lucky to have an opportunity to live in the United States for about two years. I not only enjoyed the beautiful environment there, but also appreciated the American people's active way of protecting their environment. Now, whenever the environment protection is mentioned, a beautiful view of California will arise in my mind: white clouds flying across the blue sky, green grassplot sprinkled with colorful flowers and small animals playing happily among the trees.
I remember that at the beginning of my coming to America, I often went to my father's working place, the United States Geological Survey, to have fun. Each time I found a lot of people riding bicycles to their offices. Among the cyclists, an old man with white hair attracted my attention. Curiously, I asked my father," Why does the old man ride his bike to work every day? Doesn't he have enough money to buy a car?" Father laughed, "No, not because of money. Actually, he is one of the greatest scientists in the world. He can afford to buy a motorcade if he likes. He is just an environmentalist and usually doesn't drive unless going shopping, or in bad weather. In America, there are a lot of environmentalists, who actively protect their environment. For example, in Palo Alto city we are living now, there is even a bicycle-to-work day on May 19th every year to encourage people to decrease air pollution caused by cars".
Later, I also learnt another interesting fact of environment protection there. In some states of America, in order to decrease air pollution, save energy and reduce traffic jams, state governments encourage people to take buses to work or to share a car among several people. They even set special "diamond lanes" in some main streets, which are only for the vehicles with 2 or more people.
The positive actions of American people and the effective measures the American government takes in environment protection fully won my respects and deeply affected my consciousness in environment protection.
When I was back in China, people often asked me: " What do you think of America?" I always bolt out:" Wonderful, especially the beautiful environment." Frankly speaking, after several years, the faces of my American teachers and friends have gradually faded away from my mind, but the blue sky, green grass and lovely animals in California often arise in my mind, and became my dream of visiting there again.
The 2008 Olympics provide us with the opportunity to publicize and practise environment protection in Beijing. Is it possible for Beijing to Is it possible for Beijing to become as beautiful as California? The answer is "yes", but the dream needs every Beijing citizen's full support and active moves to accomplish.
From now on, if every student who is driven to school can take bus or ride bicycle to school once a week, if every car owner goes to work in a car pool once a week, we can make a difference. The 2008 Olympic Game has been the most discussed and anticipated event through out Beijing ever since Beijing bid for it years ago. Yet the focus has shifted from making a promise to making good a promise after Beijing’s successful bid. In my opinion, to bridge the gap between a promise and reality, Beijing still has a long way to go. Here are some of my ideas on how to fill that gap.

First, the speaking of English is far most important than all other difficulties. Learning a language takes a long time and a lot of heart ship, it’s not easy. So can we get most of Chinese to speak English before 2008? It needs us to try and practice very hard.

Second, traffic jams have been an age-old headache in Beijing, the scenes of long queues of vehicles worming their way inch by inch while discharging dark fumes into the air had given all of us a really bad impression, and I know that none of us wish to show off that side of Beijing to athletes and journalists over the world, it would blemish the city’s image and leave a bad reputation. So we have to work real hard on Green Olympics.
还有,为了各项工作的顺利实施,一个高瞻远瞩的整体城市规划必不可少.如果时间允许,重新设计和调整北京的建筑风格会为构建北京的城市特色创造环境.把东方的精致和西方的宏伟结合在一起一定会在众多建筑风格中独树一帜.要做到以上几点,北京应该听取得来自一流建筑师的建议并作出整体规划.
Thirdly, to add enchantment to convenience, an over-all city planning is indispensable. If time permits, a redesign of city layout and adjustment of architectural style would provide a better environment for fostering the characteristics, blending oriental elegance with international grandeur, will tower a lot among surrounding architectures. To achieve such effects, Beijing shall solicit opinions from first-rate architects and make an overall plan.
