Florence Chadwick was a great swimmer. However, not all of her efforts worked out. In addition to working hard, she had a secret for success. At the age of 34, her goal was to become the first woman to swim from Catalina Island to the California coast. However, in 1952, the sea was like an ice bath and the fog was so dense that she could hardly see her support boats. Her body was numb(麻木) and she had been swimming for nearly 16 hours. Against the cold grip of the sea, she struggled on—hour after hour—while millions watched on national television. Alongside Florence, in one of the boats, her mother and her trainer offered encouragement. They told her it wasn’t much farther. But all she could see was fog. They urged her not to quit. She never had… until then. With only a half mile to go, she asked to be pulled out. Still warming her chilled body several hours later, she told a reporter, “Look, I’m not excusing myself, but if I could have seen land I might have made it.” It was not tiredness or even the cold water that defeated her. It was the fog. She was unable to see her goal. Two months later, she tried again. Despite the same dense fog, she swam with her faith intact(未受影响的)and her goal clearly pictured in her mind. She knew that somewhere behind that fog was land and this time she made it!

One possible version:
Several days ago, I came across a story about Glorence Chadwick, the first woman who succeeded in swimming the Catalina Channel. It was a goal in her mind that enabled her to make the breakthrough regardless of dense fog, which failed her in her first attempt.
I was deeply inspired by such a story, as it makes me realize the power of a goal in shaping one’s success and gives me strength to pursue my goal, despite the hardships I am to go through.
In my view, goals are crucial to guiding our lives. To begin with, as goals often go with hopes, they have the magic to enable us to be positive towards ups and downs. Moreover, bearing goals in mind, we are less likely to be blind to the ideals of our life and be distracted from our way to success. Finally, as goals are what we are longing for, they thus can motivate us to strive for greater achievement, making our lives more fulfilling.
Since goals are so significant to our lives, it is worthwhile for us students to set up goals and accomplish them with every effort we can make.

It was a goal in her mind that… In my view,To begin with, Moreover,Finally等等。

Florence was born in 1820sintosa wealthy,English family who were,at the time of her birth living in Florence,Italy. She and her sister had all the advantages that money could provide. This included private tutors and a superb education which was not generally available to girls at that time.Florence excelled in Science and Maths;however there was little opportunity for her to use her knowledge.Women of her position in life were expected to get married and arrange all the domestic affairs that were important to wealthy families. But,Florence had a dream to become a nurse and when her father refused to allow her to train as a nurse, she was so upset that she became very ill.Eventually, her father relented and Florence started on her journey. She volunteered to work in hospitals in France and Germany and even travelled to Egypt to have formal training.Nurses were not considered to be important or valuable in those days and hospitals were generally places that only poor people would go to out of desperation. The standards of hygiene and medicine were very low.Florence began to change all that.In every hospital that she worked in she made sure that everything was clean and that the patients themselves were washed and well nourished.
Florence had become well known for all the wonderful improvements that she had made and for the way she had trained other young women to be good nurses. When the British army was fighting in the Crimea against Russia, the soldiers were in desperate need of medical attention. The British commander in the Crimea had heard of Florence and asked her if she would come and help.So Florence collected some of her best nurses and went to the Crimea.Conditions there were terrible. There was no water and no medical equipment.Florence and her team organized a kitchen and a laundry and worked incredibly hard to improve conditions for the injured soldiers. At night she would carry a lamp as she went round the hospital and the soldiers started to call her“the lady with the lamp”.They would often kiss her shadow as she passed by.Florence and her team saved thousands of lives and earned the love and admiration of her countrymen and women.
In 1860 Florence started the Nightingale Training School. The Nightingale nurses were in demand all over the world. She advised the American President how to look after his soldiers who were injured in the Civil War.She was a guiding influence behind the founding of the International Red Cross. In 1907,she was honoured by the King of England,Edward V11 and given thesgroupsof Merit. She was the first woman to receive this award. She died at the age of 90 on August 10,1910.Florence could have lived a life of luxury and comfort. She saw a need for someone to help the poor and the sick and she did everything in her power to improve the situation and to make a change. She thought little of her own comfort and she inspired thousands of young women to become nurses.

Located in Florence, Oregon is “Sea Lion Caves”, the only known western, coastal, mainland habitat of Stellar Sea Lions. It is also the world’s largest sea cave in existence today and a perfect place to get up close and personal with nature. The sea caves are said to be the home of an estimated 200 sea lions and that at any given time visitors can expect to see at least 150 sea lions going about their daily business.
The most immense(巨大的) of all sea lions, the Stellar males are known to grow up to 12 feet in length and weight an incredulous 1,500 pounds. The females, on the other hand, tend to be a bit smaller and average 9 feet in length with an average weight of 700 pounds.
They tend to breed and give birth during the spring and summer months. The breeding and birthing process takes place on the steep cliff ledges that surround the sea cave. Therefore the best time to view this ritual is during those select months from the outside viewing platform.
In addition to the sea lions, visitors can expect to catch a glimpse of the rare Pigeon Guillemont. These unusual sea birds tend to nest in seaweed along the cliff ledges in early April. And ever the graceful Gray Whales are expected to be seen. Each year, travelling in pods, these sea creatures migrate around “ Cape Blance” on their way to and from their native Alaska waters.
As of 2010 “ Sea Lion Caves” is open daily year round except for both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The ticket box office is open from 9:00 am until 5:30 pm. Visitor have a choice of two different ticket options; platform view or cave view. And admission into the cave itself is $13.00 for adults and $ 8.00 for children ages 3 to 12. Children under the age of 2 are admitted for free and there is a discount ticket price available for senior citizens . It currently costs $3.50 per person to access the topside wildlife viewing platform. While on the platform visitor can pay an additional fee to use the on-site telescope or opt (选择) to bring their own such equipment.

Scientist Florence Wambugu works with farmers in Kenya, a co
Scientist Florence Wambugu works with farmers in Kenya, a country in East Africa. She helps them grow bigger and better crops. Wambugu is especially interested in finding simple ways to produce more food.
In the past ten years, Wambugu has spent much of her time studying sweet potatoes, which are an important food in her part of Kenya. A virus (病毒) kept attacking the plants. It stopped the sweet potatoes from growing well. Because of the virus, some farmers lost three quarters of their crops.
Wambugu went to war against the virus. Her research for a way to save the sweet potatoes led to a lab in St. Louis, Missouri.
The lab mainly works on genes (基因), the chemical “computer programs” found in the cells of living things. Genes tell a plant to produce pink flowers or an animal to grow black hair. Now scientists have found ways to move genes from one living thing to another. That process is called genetic engineering.
Wambugu spent three years in the lab. As a result, she created a sweet potato plant that could fight off the virus. Wambugu tested her research in Kenya, and her plants produced wonderful sweet potatoes.
That’s just the beginning, Wambugu believes. Genetically modified (转基因的) foods, she thinks, could help farmers in poor countries grow badly needed crops, thus, fewer people will go hungry.
小题1:The text is written mainly to _______.
A.tell us sweet potatoes are in danger of being attacked by a virus
B.introduce Wambugu’s contribution to genetic engineering
C.introduce a new way of killing plant viruses
D.tell how hard Wambugu worked in her lab for three years
小题2:What caused Wambugu to set up a lab in St. Louis, Missouri?
A.Her wish to save sweet potatoes in Kenya.
B.Her great interest in genetic engineering.
C.Her love for sweet potatoes.
D.Her interest in plant life.
小题3:The fourth paragraph mainly explains what ________ is.
A.a crop virus B.chemical technology
C.a computer program D.genetic engineering
小题4: What is Wambugu’s attitude toward “genetic engineering”?
A.It will help more hungry people.
B.It should be carefully used.
C.It has more disadvantages than disadvantages.
D.It is a too expensive technology at present.

Dear Florence,We arrived in India last week, and the voyage
Dear Florence,
We arrived in India last week, and the voyage was the worst experience of my entire life. I’m lucky to be alive!
The first part of the journey was terrible, because the ship hit bad weather almost as soon as we left Liverpool. But much, much worse was to come. Later, we were involved in a collision with another boat and we had to abandon ship!
We had been at sea for about two weeks and we were in the Mediterranean. There is now a canal between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea called the Suez Canal, which opened last year. Our boat stopped at Port Said, the Egyptian port at the entrance to the canal. I remember looking through the porthole of my cabin and wishing that I could go ashore and visit this fascinating place, but mummy had ordered that I was to stay in the cabin because I was feeling ill. “you must stay here for at least another two days.” I remember her saying. How wrong she would turn out to be! The ship left the port and headed towards the canal . I was alone in the cabin and I watched the port disappear into the distance. Suddenly there was a loud bang, followed by the most awful crunching(嘎吱的)sound, and the ship shook and turned slightly on its side.
There was an eerie silence for a moment, then people started shouting. Mummy came running into the cabin and told me that we had collided with another boat. She took my hand and we ran along the deck towards the lifeboats. There was a lot of shouting and people were running everywhere, but the crew were all acting calmly, helping people into the lifeboats and telling people not to panic.
Well, clearly we survived, as did all the passengers and crew of the ship. The other boat wasn’t so lucky. It sank and several lives were lost.
I will write about the rest of the journey soon. Please give my love to Aunt Claire and Uncle Eric.
Your loving cousin,
Jane

We arrived in India last week, and the voyage was the worst experience of my entire life.
从文章第二段的:“the ship hit bad weather”和“ Later, we were involved in a collision with another boat”可知答案。
文章第三段中有说到“mummy had ordered that I was to stay in the cabin because I was feeling ill.”
根据时间状语for a moment then判断不可能是持续时间长,所以不可能选B、D选项。

Over The Love-Florence And The Machine
Ever since I was a child
I've turned it over in my mind
I sang by the piano
Tore my yellow dress and
Cried and cried and cried
I don't want to see what I've seen
To undo has been done
Turn off all the lights
Let the morning come,come
Now there's green light in my eyes
And my lover on my mind
And I sing from the piano
Tear my yellow dress and
Cry and cry and cry
Over the love of you
On this champagne-drunken home
Against the current of gold
Everybody see I love him
'Cause it's the feeling that you get
When the afternoon is set
On the bridge into the city
I don't want to see what I've seen
To undo what has been done
Turn off all the lights
Let the morning come
There's green light in my eyes
And my lover on my mind
And I sing from the piano
Tear my yellow dress and
Cry and cry and cry
'Cause your're a hard soul to save
With an ocean in the way
But I'll get around it
I'll get around it
'Cause your're a hard soul to save
With an ocean in the way
But I'll get around it
Now there's green light in my eyes
And my lover on my mind
And I sing from the piano
Tear my yellow dress and
Cry and cry and cry and
Over the love of you
I can see the green light
I can see it in your eyes
