Kent State University's school of theatre and dance performed a rendition of the classic, Jane Eyre this month. The show was a musical with all of the necessary elements to lift you from your seat and submerse youinto a society in nineteenth century England from the time the cell phone shut-off announcement was made until the last note at the curtain call. The recurring arches, darkened, soft lighting, and the use of a classic chorus to go along with them alluded that a sinister underbelly of social status and reputation were present in the performance.
One of the first things that an audience member noticed was the grandeur of the set. It was composed of a gothic-style foreground with rustic twigs of a root-like earthy appearance. There were grand arches for windows and entries as well. Also, the background was a large arch with the silhouette of roots. There were also two matching greek-style pillar arches on either side of the stage. They added a lot to many messages of the show. For one, they were grand structures that were barren inside which is much like Mr. Rochester himself. He was a man of high social stature but felt enslaved by his trick of a marriage and his grand yet incomplete (without a true love) home. The arches also suggest the importance of reputation with the same sort of fundamental grand image yet emptiness. The way that people are enslaved yet scramble to ascertain that solid image amongst their peers. The arches were almost inviting the audience to come inside to reveal their secret, the thing that was hidden deep inside that could send the structure crumbling in ruin.

Although "Wuthering Heights" is Emily Bronte's only novel, published in 1847, it has long been considered a classic and is included in many literary canons. In the story Catherine and Heathcliff are friends who are also in a perpetual sexually frustrated state. They are constantly wishing they were with each other, even though they have relationships with other people. This passionate friendship leads to nothing but trouble, especially when there are other people involved. Both Catherine and Heathcliff are selfish and self-centered, and the result of their egotism strains the relationships all around them to the point of breaking.
Catherine ends up marrying Edgar Linton who is from the neighboring estate, Thrushcross Grange. They reside together with Edgar's sister, Isabella. In a rebellious state, Isabella runs off to marry Heathcliff. Edgar and Catherine have a little girl, also named Catherine (or Cathy), who is born just hours before Catherine (the elder) dies. Meanwhile, Isabella runs away from the tyrant Heathcliff only to find out she is pregnant with his son, whom she names Linton.
Cathy continues to grow up at the Grange under the care of her father, Edgar. Isabella becomes sick and dies. Linton is then taken in by Edgar, but when Heathcliff finds out he has a son, he takes the boy into his house at Wuthering Heights.
There were many times where the characteristics of the parent come out in the child. For instance, Catherine (the elder) was quite conceited and was used to having her way. There were many times where she was downright rude to the people around her and treated the servants with no respect at all. Even though Cathy never knew her mother, there were times when she was haughty and rude, especially when she met Hareton, her other cousin, and made fun of his vernacular speech.
After Linton was summoned to Wuthering Heights to live with his father, Heathcliff, his father was candid with him, noting his weakness and scrawniness. Linton eventually married Cathy. Almost immediately, young Linton takes on the telltale characteristics of his long-lost father. He tells Cathy that everything she owns is his, including all of her estate and even the locket she wears on her neck (at which he proceeds to tear from her neck and crush with his boot just to show her his power). Thus far, these actions seem quite out of place with Linton's past demeanor.
Children learn from their parents and other influential adults in their lives, even if the behavior isn't positive. In Cathy's case, she didn't even have to witness her mother's actions to mimic them in her teenage years. Linton didn't grow up with his father, but in a matter of a few years learned from his example in how to treat women. Although he did not have many positive male role models, he used what male role models were there, and it was the absent father figure who turned up later in life. He chose to behave like his father (perhaps to assimilate) rather than the upbringing his mother had tried to instill in him. He chose to believe his father's lies rather than what his mother had taught him before she died (which goes along with what his uncle and Nelly Dean told him). It is in human nature to imitate the parent figure of the same sex to a certain degree, even if it not right.

Here's a story told by a horse, in his own words. It is a story of how he was treated with affection and respect when he was a young and healthy horse, but how he fell into illness and despair as he was passed from one set of careless hands to the next.
As a very young foal, the beautiful Black Beauty receives some very sound advice from his mother:
She told me the better I behaved, the better I should be treated, and that it was wisest always to do my best to please my master; 'but,' said she, 'there are a great many kinds of men; there are good, thoughtful men like our master, that any horse may be proud to serve; but there are bad, cruel men, who never ought to have a horse or dog to call their own. Beside, there are a great many foolish men, vain, ignorant, and careless, who never trouble themselves to think; these spoil more horses than all, just for want of sense; they don't mean it, but they do it for all that. I hope you will fall into good hands; but a horse never knows who may buy him, or who may drive him; it is all a chance for us, but still I say, do your best wherever it is, and keep up your good name.'
This piece of advice lays down the plan for the book. Black Beauty does indeed pass through the hands of all kinds of men - good, cruel and foolish.
At his first place, the local squire's hall, Black Beauty meets other horses who all have stories to tell about men and the ways they treat their animals. Black Beauty is very happy with Squire Gordon, but the household is eventually closed down when the squire goes to live abroad and all the horses are sold on. Squire Gordon makes every effort to find Black Beauty a good place, and indeed, does so, but no amount of effort can guard a horse from stupidity.
He is ridden carelessly by a drunk servant one night and falls because he has a broken shoe. The drunkard is killed, but Black Beauty is not blamed for that. They know it was the rider's fault. Nevertheless, Black Beauty now has scarred knees from his fall and is no longer fit to be in a gentleman's stables:
... the black one, he must be sold; 'tis a great pity, but I could not have knees like these in my stables.'
It is the beginning of the downward spiral for Black Beauty. No longer fit to be a gentleman's horse, he is sold on, to work for his living. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, Black Beauty is proud and happy to work for a good master, but cannot work well if he is not cared for properly.
Read the book to see how Black Beauty enjoys the many kindnesses and survives the terrible mistreatments. Although this book is sad, I don't think you will find it too sad to read. Black Beauty is a very understanding and forgiving horse, and it does all end happily ever after.
This book is almost a collection of short stories, as each chapter relates a different episode in the life of Black Beauty and other horses who he meets along the way. A good book to choose if, perhaps, you prefer to read in short sessions.

Phillip Pullman's "Dark Materials" triology are the kind of books that you simply must read if you are a science fiction fan, or if you just like well-written books... You don't have to be a teenager to enjoy them, but you need to have a big imagination in order to thoroughly do so. If that is the case, go on reading this review...
The "Dark Materials" triology takes place in a world similar to our own, that is at the same time very different. In that world, each person's soul can be seen, is called a "daemon" and takes the form of an animal. The daemons of children change their appearance constantly, but once the children become adults, their daemons choose only one form. Pullman's alternate world has other differences, too, for example the fact that it has different kinds of magic, and that witches and armored bears coexist with human beings. The result is that the world he builds is exotic, strange but at the same time familiar.
On the negative side, the writer also plays with an institution we are familiar with, the Church, using its name but leaving behind its essence, in order to talk about a world ruled by tyrannical ecclesiastical authorities. I didn't like that, and probably you won't like it either, but keep in mind that this is a work of fiction, and as such, its purpose is to entertain, not to be taken seriously. All the same, if you think your sensibilities will be offended, or that you won't be able to separate reality from fiction, don't buy this book. You will be losing a lot, though.
Regarding the plot of these books, the main character is an orphan girl named Lyra, that lives in the Jordan College of Oxford. Her life involves no more responsabilities than playing in the grounds (and roofs!) of the College, and making mischief with her friend Roger and her daemon, Pantalaimon. But all changes when Lyra hides in a closet and hears her uncle, Lord Asriel, talk about some weird things that are happening in the North Pole to some scholars. Lyra wants to go there with him, but is not allowed to do so. However, soon afterwards her dear friend Roger and many other children disappear, and when all clues point out to the North Pole, Lyra will start a journey to rescue them. That journey will take her to many places, allow her to meet lots of different people, and help her to discover new things about herself and others. The amoral premise of the Fox series Prison Break would have you root for murders, rapists and thieves to escape their incarceration. Predictably, a nihilistic cloak descends over events at Fox River State Penitentiary as inmates spend a season's worth of episodes planning their escape. On the heels of serialized prime-time television successes like 24 or Lost (and failures such as Surface and Invasion), Prison Break presents a complicated, lengthy story arc that will leave non-consistent viewers more than a little flummoxed. Absurdly implausible though it may be, the reward for keeping up with this show obsessively is a well-crafted production, with clever plot twists that more often than not succeeds as a taut thriller.
As the series opens, Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) gets the finishing touches of a tattoo applied to his upper torso and both arms. Then he robs a bank. But things don't add up as he surrenders too easier, and shows utter disinterest in saving his own skin at his arraignment. Attorney and family friend Veronica Donovan (Robin Tunney) can't figure out why he's essentially giving up. He more or less requests to be incarcerated at Fox River State Penitentiary and the judge obliges him with a five year sentence. Once he's enrolled at the Joliet, Illinois penal facility, he scouts out Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) who has been convicted of murdering the Vice President抯 brother. That's right -- the Vice President of the United States. It turn's out Lincoln is Michael's brother. Things begin to add up.
You see, Michael has launched an audacious plan to spring his brother out of prison. Having exhausted every effort of the legal system to free his wrongly convicted brother, Michael has planned a highly detailed prison break scenario. How could he know so much about the inner workings of the prison? you may ask yourself. It seems Michael is a structural engineer whose firm was contracted to retrofit this very prison a few years back He's borrowed the blueprints of the facilities and hidden the details in his intricate tattoo. Trust me, it's the first of many suspensions of belief you will need to endure throughout the series to swallow the far-fetched goings-on you will encounter. If you can handle that, you'll have no problem with him cutting out pills secreted in his body, having regular insulin shots (though he's not diabetic) and building unlikely alliances among the prison population. These include Michael's cellmate Fernando Sucre (Amaury Nolasco), mobster John Abruzzi (Peter Stormare) who's in charge of work detail, C-Note (Rockmond Dunbar) who's first mission is to obtain medication that counteracts Michael's insulin intact, and rapist and child murderer -- not to mention violent homosexual -- Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell (Robert Knepper). Also in the mix is Charles Westmorland (Muse Watson) who, rumor has it, is the infamous D.B. Cooper, 1971 airliner hijacker who parachuting out over the Pacific Northwest with a load of cash. Ex-psychiatric ward resident Charles "Haywire" Patoshik (Silas Weir Mitchell) becomes Michael's cellmate later on in the season, and David "Tweener" Apolskis (Lane Garrison) schemes his way into the plan as well.
Overseeing the correctional institution is Warden Henry Pope (Stacy Keach). He may run the place by day, but crooked Captain Brad Bellick (Wade Williams), as he will tell you, runs it by night. Outside the prison walls, Veronica dives right into a vast conspiracy, with tentacles reaching up to the highest levels of power in the federal government. Not only did Lincoln not commit the murder he was sent to the slammer for, by his "victim" may very well still be alive. Hopefully by now you have disengaged your brain, content to wallow in the intrigue without trying to have it make sense.
The show is executive produced by Brett Ratner ("X-Men: The Last Stand"), who also directed the pilot episode, and created by writer Paul T. Scheuring. They have indicated that the entire story will be told in a two-season arc, though ratings will no doubt have an effect on that decision. A standout episode, 揃rother抯 Keeper,?unfolds in compelling flashback the background on the characters, detailing exactly how they ended up in jail. It's a welcome departure from the typical episodes (which tend to be repetitive in structure), and really helps to flesh out the supporting characters. Cliffhanger endings to each episode (and nearly to every commercial break) are well executed.
All the upcoming prime-time serials set to debut in the fall (including Vanished, The Nine, and Kidnapped) would seem to indicate a peak in popularity for this method of storytelling. Preposterous situations aside, Prison Break provides the addictive suspense expected of it, though not without its faults. In particular, it's very cynical of religion, holding particular disdain for Catholicism. For example, Abruzzi is threatened by one of his mob associates: "Our wives are friends; our kids go to the same Catholic school. It would be a shame if anything were to happen to your kids." Additionally, Sucre and his girlfriend make plans -- during conjugal visits -- to get married in a Catholic church. Oh yeah, and it's implied that a bishop is circumventing tax law, but he's bumped off early on, so we don't get the details. What's your impression of Catholics now? Religious symbols (and people) are only used as props or plot devices -- that's all. Once again, a character solves their problems through suicide. A nice twist against type has the warden as a good guy. The season ends with a mother of all cliffhangers, as a handful of escapees literally run for their lives.
The twenty-two episodes are divided onto six discs. The discs are housed in three thin, clear keepcases, each of which holds a pair of discs. The front of each case features the same close-up photo of Michael on their top halves. Smaller color photos of Michael, Lincoln, and Sucre are featured on the bottoms of cases one, two, and three, respectively. The back of each case features a listing of episode titles, airdates, and brief synopses. The cases slide into a cardboard outer sleeve.
The first season is about Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), who is accused of murdering Terrence Steadman (Jeff Perry), the brother of the Vice President of the United States. Because of convincing evidence, Lincoln is sentenced to death. He is incarcerated in Fox River State Penitentiary where he awaits his execution. Lincoln's brother, brilliant structural engineer Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), is convinced of Lincoln's innocence and formulates an escape plan. In order to gain access to Fox River, Michael commits armed robbery intentionally in order to receive a five year sentence. While incarcerated he must race against the clock and make important connections with other inmates and staff. One staff member in particular is the prison doctor, Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies). Michael befriends her when he pretends to suffer from Type 1 diabetes in order to gain daily access to the prison's infirmary. The brothers' fight to ward off the execution is aided by their lifelong friend Veronica Donovan (Robin Tunney), who begins to investigate the conspiracy that put Lincoln in jail. However, they are hindered by covert agents, members of an organization known as The Company. The Company was responsible for framing Lincoln, and they did so because of Lincoln's father, Aldo Burrows, and his former connections to the company. The brothers, along with six other inmates, Fernando Sucre (Amaury Nolasco), Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell (Robert Knepper), Benjamin Miles "C-Note" Franklin (Rockmond Dunbar), David "Tweener" Apolskis (Lane Garrison), John Abruzzi (Peter Stormare), and Charles "Haywire" Patoshik (Silas Weir Mitchell) who come to be known as the Fox River Eight finally escape in the season finale because of the help of Dr. Sara Tancredi who has been convinced by Michael to leave the infirmary door unlocked. Season 2 begins eight hours after the escape, focusing mainly on the escapees. Series creator Paul Scheuring describes the second season as "The Fugitive times eight" and likens it to the "second half of The Great Escape".[9] The fugitives split up and journey to locations across the country with the authorities close behind them as they each pursue their individual goals. Brad Bellick (Wade Williams) gets fired from the prison where he worked as a guard in season 1 and chases after the inmates himself for the reward money . Several of the escapees reunite in search of a large cache of money buried long ago by another prisoner who is rumored to be D. B. Cooper. T-Bag manages to escape with the money, and the brothers spend the rest of the season tracking him down, both for the money which they need to escape the country, and because Scofield feels responsible for releasing the murderer.
Federal agent Alexander Mahone (William Fichtner) is assigned to track down and capture the eight fugitives, but is revealed to be working for The Company; The group wants all eight men - especially Lincoln - dead. Several of the escapees are killed or recaptured, but the brothers make it to Panama. During the brothers' flight, Sara's father, Governor Frank Tancredi, is murdered because he discovers the truth behind Lincoln's innocence. After discovering him dead, Sara returns to her apartment only to have to flee for her life. She meets up with Michael on two different occasions, remaining with him as the brothers try to bring down the current President, a Company member. To ensure the brothers' safety, Sara allows herself to be arrested and faces a trial. During the trial, the testimony of former Secret Service agent Paul Kellerman, who used to work for the Company-controlled President, exonerates Lincoln and Sara. Meanwhile Michael, T-Bag and Mahone are arrested by the Panamanian authorities and are imprisoned at the Penitenciaría Federal de Sona where they find Bellick who had been arrested earlier that episode.
Season 3 follows both Michael inside Sona and Lincoln on the outside in Panama. Sona is a prison that has been run by the inmates and guarded only from the outside since a riot the year before. Burrows is quickly contacted by The Company who have kidnapped his son LJ (Marshall Allman) and Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies), the woman Michael loves. He is told that they want Scofield to break James Whistler (Chris Vance) out of Sona. The season follows Michael and Whistler's trials in formulating an escape plan, as Michael has to deal with extreme tension and as Lincoln deals with the Company's operative Gretchen Morgan (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe). Sucre gets a job at the prison to aid Michael in his escape plan.
When Lincoln attempts to rescue Sara and LJ following a clue provided by Sara, Morgan "beheads Sara" and sends Lincoln a head in a box as a warning. As the season ends, the pair manage to escape along with Mahone leaving behind several accomplices including T-Bag and Bellick. Sucre's identity is discovered by a prison guard and is thrown into Sona just after the escape. LJ is traded for Whistler, and Michael is out for revenge against Gretchen for "Sara's death".
Season 4 starts with Michael avenging Sara's death, before learning that Gretchen did not kill her as he thought. Michael also learns the truth about Whistler, that he has secretly been working alongside Mahone to take down the Company. A Company operative takes Whistler's life shortly after this. Sona has burned down and Sucre, Bellick, and T-Bag have escaped during the chaos. After returning to Chicago to look for Sara, Michael is arrested and recruited by Don Self (Michael Rapaport), a Department of Homeland Security agent, to help bring down the Company in exchange for his freedom. Lincoln, who was arrested in Panama is transferred to Chicago, and along with Mahone, Sucre, and Bellick with whom a deal is made. Also joining the group are Sara, who escaped from Gretchen which resulted in Gretchen's own captivity by the Company, having failed to secure a valuable item, and Roland (James Hiroyuki Liao), a hacker who was assigned to help them after getting arrested for identity theft. Together, they devise a plan to retrieve Scylla, thought of as the Company's 'little black book', from the Company that will help to destroy them. In the meantime, Wyatt (Cress Williams), an agent from the Company, attempts to track Michael and Lincoln down and T-Bag heads North to the US with the "Birds" book in his possession. Michael also begins to experience some troubling health problems.

For rest of the world this film is irrelevant and has nothing new to offer in terms of the movie flow and character development.But if they are able to put that aside,they would too probably enjoy the funny moments that this movie provides and would end up saying that this is the best Bollywood film they have ever seen.

Jim Hawkins is a young boy who lives at his parents’ sleepy sea-side inn, the Admiral Benbow, near Bristol, England, in the mid-18th century. One day, an old and menacing sea captain referred to as Billy Bones appears and takes a room at the inn. The captain paying "three or four gold pieces" in advance stays for "month after month, so that all the money had been long exhausted". One day, an equally menacing figure named Black Dog arrives at the Inn looking for Bill, and when the two pirates meet, Jim overhears them arguing in the parlour and finally the two begin fighting. Billy wounds Black Dog, but immediately afterwards falls to the ground from a stroke. Bill tells Jim that Black Dog was "a bad 'un" and "mind you, it's my sea chest they're after". He mutters incoherently to Jim about a man named Captain Flint and something he was given the day Flint died at Savannah. Jim's father soon dies, and the day after his funeral a blind pirate, Pew, appears at the inn where he presents the captain with "The Black Spot", a secret pirate message which in this case gives Bones with an ultimatum to be met by ten o'clock that night, on pain of death. The captain dies minutes later of a stroke. Hastily, Jim and his mother unlock Billy’s sea chest (to collect payment for his inn tab; Mrs. Hawkins is determined to take neither more nor less than her due), finding money and a sealed packet inside. Hearing steps outside, they quickly leave with such money as Mrs. Hawkins has managed to count, and Jim snatches the packet as a make-weight since the count is short. Jim returns to the stockade and tells of his encounter with Ben. Silver visits under a white flag of truce and attempts a negotiation with the captain, but Smollett deliberately goads him into a shouting match, knowing that a pirate attack is likely sooner or later and that it may as well be sooner, while it is expected. The pirates attack the stockade within the hour, and are driven off with serious losses, but the captain is wounded and Joyce and Hunter are killed. Eager to take action, Jim follows another whim and deserts his companions, sneaking off to hunt for Ben’s handmade coracle hidden in the woods.
After finding Ben’s boat, Jim sails out to the anchored ship with the intention of cutting it adrift, thereby depriving the pirates of a means of escape. He cuts the rope, but he realizes his small boat has drifted near the pirates’ camp and fears he will be discovered. By chance, the pirates do not spot Jim, and he floats around the island until he catches sight of the ship drifting wildly. Struggling aboard, he discovers that one of the two watchmen left aboard, Israel Hands, has killed the other watchman in a drunken fit and is seriously injured himself. Jim takes control of the ship while Hands feigns helplessness, but Hands then tries to kill him. A fight ensues in which Jim's nimbleness saves him from the wounded pirate, and though Jim is wounded he manages to kill Hands.
Jim returns to the stockade at night not realizing it has since been occupied by the pirates. Silver takes Jim hostage, telling the boy that the captain has given the pirates the treasure map, provisions, and the use of the stockade in exchange for their lives. Silver is having trouble managing his men, who accuse him of treachery. Silver proposes to Jim that they help each other survive by pretending Jim is a hostage. However, the men present Silver with a black spot and inform him that he has been deposed as their commander. In a skilled attempt to gain control of his crew, Silver slyly shows them the treasure map to appease them, narrowly saving Jim's life (and Silver's) from the fickle pirates. Silver is unanimously re-elected as captain, to cries of "Silver!" and "Barbecue forever! Barbecue for cap'n!"
The next day Silver leads Jim and the last five pirates to the treasure site, but they are shocked to find it already excavated and the treasure removed except for a few stray coins. The pirates are enraged and ready to kill Silver and Jim once and for all. At that moment Dr. Livesey, Ben Gunn, and Abraham Gray appear from the bushes and fire on the pirate band, killing two and scattering three others throughout the island. Silver at this point has switched sides yet again, and because he saved Jim's life earlier, is accepted warily back into the group.
After spending three days carrying the loot from Ben's cave to the ship, the men prepare to set sail for home. There is a debate about the fate of the remaining mutineers. Despite the three pirates’ pleas, they are left marooned on the island, perhaps a kinder fate than returning them home to the gibbet, and much to the glee of Ben Gunn. Silver is allowed to join the voyage to a nearby Spanish American port, where he sneaks off the ship one night with the help of Ben Gunn carrying a small portion of the treasure and is never heard of again. The voyage home is uneventful.
Squire Trelawney and Doctor Livesey resume their business as usual, despite being thousands of pounds richer. Captain Smollett retires from the sea on his share and lives peacefully in the country. Abraham Gray wisely decides to invest his share in building a career as an honest seaman, and applies himself so well to his trade that he is master and part-owner of a ship of his own by the time Hawkins begins his memoirs. Ben Gunn spends all of his money within nineteen days and soon falls back upon begging. However, he is given a small pension and a lodge to keep by the Squire (exactly the fate he had claimed to detest while still a maroon) and settles into village life, apparently as the local buffoon but generally liked.
Jim Hawkins is able to run the Admiral Benbow on his own, but suffers in a deeper way from his time on the island. "The bar silver and the arms still lie, for all that I know, where Flint buried them ... [but] oxen and wain-ropes would not bring me back again to that accursed island; and the worst dreams that ever I have are when I hear the surf booming about its coasts or start upright in bed with the sharp voice of Captain Flint [Silver's talking parrot] still ringing in my ears: 'Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!'"

看PBS的纪录片吧,不过时间是长一点,可能一集有两个多小时.不过PBS的纪录片在美国都是拍给大众,尤其是青少年看的,知识性很强,也不算太难懂,采访了很多历史证人,而且纪录片的话,随便在哪个地方断开影响都不会太大.
我比较推荐Ric Burns的New York（分有7集,记录纽约从荷兰统治一直到现代的历史,后面续拍了第8集记录世贸中心的起建与倒塌）还有Ken Burns的Baseball（棒球纪录片,分有9集记录美国国球棒球从1840年到1970年的发展,后面又续拍了第10集,讲述1970年后的发展）.

I approach Tim Burton films with a certain trepidation. Will it be "Edward Scissorhands" or "Batman II?" With Burton you could get a quirky comedy, a dark thriller, or sweet morality tale. And there's always the possibility of Danny DeVito chomping down on a raw fish.

"Big Fish" combines Burton's unusual humor with a heart-wrenching story of a father-son deathbed reconciliation. Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor share the role of Ed Bloom, one of the big fish from the movie's title while an SUV-sized catfish plays the other. Bloom is a metaphorical and literal big fish in the small pond of Ashton, Alabama in this tale told mostly through flashback. Jessica Lange plays his wife and Billy Crudup plays the son, Will, estranged from his father for the past three years. Father and son are reunited as Finney lies dying of cancer.

Ed Bloom has spent his life spinning his personal history into mythological proportions: an early encounter with a very tall man becomes a battle with a house-sized giant; a rural village is depicted as heaven on earth; military service during the Korean War morphs into a behind-the-lines mission that would make Duke Nukem proud. Originally a true believer, Will now knows everything his father has told him was not just an exageration or even a tall tale but an outright lie. In his effort to understand the truth behind his father's stories he learns to love the man as well as the mythology. And Burton delivers a terrific punchline at the end of the film that left me both tickled and weeping, a truly weird emotional state.

Burton deals with mythic themes in "Big Fish." Besides the surface story of the generational tension between father and son he explores the metaphor of the big-fish-in-a-small-pond by examining the impact Ed Bloom has had on the lives he's touched in his workaday contacts with colleagues, customers (he's a traveling salesman), and people in the small towns across the South. Not exactly "It's A Wonderful Life," he still manages to show how all of us -- even the little fish -- have profound effects on the people around us. And of course love -- unrequited and reciprocated -- control almost all of Ed's many adventures.

The acting is wonderful. You will actually believe two Brits and a Scot (Finney, Helena Bonham Carter, and McGregor) are natives of small town Alabama. Lange brings dignity and brio to the role of the long "suffering" wife -- and she still looks great(!)-- you believe she has had a long and loving life with Finney/McGregor. DeVito is a delight in the role of a circus ringmaster. But the scene-stealer is Bonham Carter in the dual role of Jenny and the crone witch.

I rated this movie ten stars and when you see it you'll do the same.

12 years on; McClane is bald,estranged from his family and feels increasingly like an anachronism.There is a strong 'post-9/11' vibe,a muted color scheme and a strangely sombre tone that permeates proceedings.The film covers more terrain (literally) than it's predecessors and the action is slightly episodic as a result of shoehorning a series of mini-showdowns into a plot about cyber-terrorists and an attempt to shut down the US infrastructure.It's handled more deftly and inventively than you might expect,but it's not an obvious marriage.
The authenticity of the 'hacking' that takes place is also suspect (webcam becomes spy-cam in the basement of a security obsessed computer nerd?) and there is a horribly misjudged piece of casting in Kevin Smith as a stereotypical basement-dwelling,uber-hacker.(he simply doesn't have the acting chops) Having said all of that,the action sequences are top-notch; brutal and old-school.(with a couple of nods to the 'new',in the form of the stoic but sizzling Maqqie Q and 'le parkour' madman Cyril Rafaelli,whose incredible dexterity is captured to dazzling effect by Wiseman and crew) The performances are mainly strong,especially Bruce who immediately reminds you that you're watching McClane despite the (slightly) sanitized language and vanishing hair.Justin Long is surprisingly engaging as McClane's assignment/sidekick in a role which could so easily have been irritating,and Olyphant,as the main bad guy,gives an intense and charismatic performance full of understated humor and implied menace.He makes for an interesting antagonist,reminiscent of Rickman's 'Hans Gruber' in the original; a little less verbose,but a similarly charming sociopath with a formidable,sub-zero stare.Even the inclusion of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as McClane's daughter,(another move which,on paper,seemed destined to annoy) works well.She has inherited some of her fathers personality traits to frequently amusing effect,but the film-makers (wisely) avoid the temptation to give her any 'Lara Croft' type abilities in order to appease a wider demographic,a move that would have potentially alienated the core audience - even more than the furore over the PG-13 rating.
Speaking of the rating,while the film is light on blood and one particular swear-word,the violence hasn't been toned down at all.If anything,McClane is actually more hardened and brutal than before.Enemies are often dispatched with an efficiency and a ruthlessness commensurate with a man who's done this before.There is also a calm resignation in Willis' body language at times.McClane is a man who has found no solace in being a hero; post-divorce and struggling to maintain a relationship with his daughter,(His son is barely mentioned) he feels he has lost the things that matter most to him.This is the single most notable change in the film.Gone is the wild-eyed,heavy-breathing,frantically pacing McClane of the original Die Hard; The man rapping on the windows,desperately trying to signal the fire brigade.Willis communicates this malaise subtly and effectively,prompting the Justin Long character to ask at one point; 'Why are you so calm?Have you done that kinda stuff before?' The direction is astonishingly controlled and confident from the man that bought the world 'Underworld' (He may be one to watch after all.) and,for my money,offers the best spectacle of any film this summer.
There is a weight and an impact to the stunts and the fight scenes that comes from using actual stunt-work; so often eschewed these days in favor of scenes built entirely on disk.
As mentioned,the tone is slightly subdued for a summer actioner (despite a good number of amusing lines and a healthy amount of self-awareness) which differentiates it from the others in the series.There is a world-weariness amongst the chaos.A meditation on being 'that guy' is one of the more inspired exchanges,and the greatest insight into McClane's journey through the missing years.As a result,the audience is not left to enjoy the sense of good triumphing over evil at the end without at least a little remorse about the meaning of it all (It reminded me of one of the great strengths of '24' in that regard.).As the credits roll,all may not be right with the world as would be more typical of the genre,but there are other,more personal triumphs to savor.This gives the film a little more depth than the previous sequels,though it takes some of the edge off the 'octane buzz' that the film injects you with.
Nevertheless,this remains significantly the best blockbuster of the Summer Season.It is the first to truly deliver on all it promised (and probably surpasses realistic expectations) It would require a second viewing to determine where it might rank in the series,but it is more than worthy of the name and Die Hard remains,for my money,the undisputed champ amongst action franchises.I humbly request one more installment in which Bruce et al pour heart and soul into creating a worthy send-off and then suggest that Bruce let's McClane retire undefeated.He'll have earned it.
