英语翻译
In the United States, there were some well-constructed houses for native Indians, ranging from the simple brush shelter to the five-storied pueblo.
In the eastern United States, one of the existing types was that commonly known under the Algonkian name of wigwam in which the Iroquois Indians lived. The wigwams were of wagon-top shape with straight sides and ends, made by bending young trees to form the round shape.Over this shape pieces of tree bark were laid to protect the Indians from bad weather.Over the bark dried grass was added.A small hole allowed smoke to escape from the top.Doorways at each end served also as windows,The Iroquois Indians built trunk walls all around their villages. The wall had only one opening,They could quickly close this opening if their enemies came near.
Interestingly, the Choctaw Indians in Mississippi also lived in a wigwam of a most primitive(原始的) construction, but different from those of the Iroquois Indians. The Choctaw Indians’ wigwams, made from mud, cane and straw, were in the form of a bee-hive.The covering was made of a long, tough grass.A post in the centre supported the roof.A hole in the top admitted the light, and allowed the smoke to pass out.
The tipi tent-housing of the upper lake and plains area was put up with poles set lightly in the ground, tied together near the top,and covered with bark and grass in the lake country. It was easily portable, and two women could set it up or take it down within an hour.
The Pawnee,Mandan and other Indian tribes (部落) along the Missouri built solid ring-shaped structures of trunk, covered with earth and dried grass, housing a dozen families.
The Wichita and other tribes of the Texas border built large ring-shaped houses covered with dried grass.K^S*5U.C
Apart from the regular housing, almost every tribe had some style of housing.

in the united states, a university professor is given a few months of *** from his duties about every seventh year for travel or advanced study. this period of *** from teaching is called a "study or research leave". its purpose is to give the professor experiences that will make him a wiser person and a better teacher when he returns to his university.
few study leaves are interesting enough to be described in national newspapers and magazines. recently, however, there was an exception. the public learned how dr. john r. coleman, president of haverford college, had spent his study leave.
at the age of 51, dr. coleman was determined to escape from university life for a few months and to get a variety of experiences in the world of work. he especially wanted to learn about people. people who do hard physical labor were especially interesting to him.
"i wanted to get away from the world of words and political matters and parties-the things a president does," dr. coleman later explained to news writers. "as a college president you begin to take yourself very seriously and to think you have power you don't. you forget things about people. i wanted to relearn things i'd forgotten."
telling no one of his plans, dr. coleman started his study leave on a farm in canada, hundreds of miles from his college. getting up at 4:30 each morning, working thirteen hours a day in fields, he prepared himself physically for his next job, digging ditches in atlanta, georgia. after that, the college president washed dishes in a boston restaurant. during the last ten days of his leave, he worked as a garbage collector.

In the United States, 30 percent of the people have a “weight problem”。To many people the cause is obvious (明显的): they eat too much. But scientific evidence (证据) does little to support this idea. Going back to America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch television.
Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people don’t eat more on average than thinner people. A 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers showed that fat people eat less than slim (苗条的) people.
Studies also show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University found the following interesting facts:
The more the man ran, the greater loss of the body fat
The more they ran, the greater increase in food intake.
Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

In the United States the most popular form of folk dancing has been square—dancing since the earlier days.In those days, men and women worked in groups to build a house or harvest crops. When the work was done, they usually danced merrily and happily in a store or in a farm kitchen.
Nowadays square-dancing is still performed.A square, which has four sides,is formed by four couples. Each couple stands on one side of the square, the man on the left and the woman on the right. That is to say, one square has eight people and they stand facing the center of the square.
Large or small numbers of people can dance together.Sometimes as many as 800 or 1,000 people may be dancing all at the same time.
Costumes are worn by those who do the square—dancing. This makes the dancing more colorful to watch.Men may have colored shirts and western trousers they wear only on special days.Women often wear full skirts of different colors with a pretty blouse. In some country areas, everyone wears their best clothes.
Today in all parts of the US you will find some schools, clubs,or other groups that are square-dancing for fun. They enjoy it very much.

In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compa

In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most people like traveling by car or by air.
Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001.The study is about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in personal vehicle.Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a bus.And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train.
Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years, the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent.Although the number of passengers has increased,it is still very small now.In countries such as France,Germany,or Japan, more people use trains.
There are several reasons why many people __________________________.
Firstly,Americans love to drive their own cars.On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains. These highways connect all major cities in America.Secondly, many travelers like to be independent. When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel.Thirdly, many buses travel between major cities.Bus travel is less costly than train travel.
In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, travel from one city to another by train may take more than a day.Airplanes can carry passengers over long distances much faster.People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to fly.For these people saving time is the most important thing.
小题1:What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

It’s convenient for people to decide the start-off time when they travel in their own cars.

in the united states, people enjoy entertaining guests at home.so they often invite friends over for a meal,a ***,or just for coffee.people often send their invitation by saying:"would you come over for dinner saturday night?" "hey,we're having a *** on friday.could you join us?" if people accept the invitation, they often say "yes, thank you." if not, they say "i'm sorry",and give an excuse . sometimes, people use some other expressions.they sound like invitation, but they are not real invitations.for example:"please come over for a drink sometime.""why don't you come over and see us sometime soon?" in fact, these are not real invitations because they don't have a specific time or date.they just show that the person is trying to be friendly ,and he/she is trying to end a conversation in a polite way.when people reply to expressions like these, they just say,"sure that would be great." or "ok,yes, thanks."so next time you hear something like an invitation, listen carefully to make sure if it is a real invitation or the person is just being friendly.

In the United States, teaching is very important. If teacher

In the United States, teaching is very important. If teachers do not teach well, students complain. If many students do not understand, people think that the teacher does not do a good job. The teacher has big responsibility to make sure students understand. In a sense, students are consumers and the teacher is offering services.
Students have the right to evaluate their teachers, and they usually do so at the end of each course. That evaluation includes lots of aspects of teaching, such as explanation, preparation, using good examples, answering questions, and organization of classes.
Students are supposed to read required textbooks and recommended books before classes. Without reading them, they will find it very difficult to understand the class. Basic courses on doing research and writing papers are taught at the beginning of the program. They teach things very concretely(具体地) and clearly. Students are expected to apply what they have learned to their studies.
Classes are usually divided into lectures and seminars. There are some lecture classes, where the teacher just gives a lecture, and students ask questions at the end. Most graduate level classes are lectures and discussions. Participating in discussions is very important. Higher level classes involve very little lecturing. They emphasize discussion and presentation by the students.
1According to the passage, good teachers should ___________.
A.try to please their students

B.treat their students as consumers

C.understand their students well

D.made sure their students understand
2What are students expected to do before attending a class?
A.Go over the lessons thoroughly.

B.Understand the textbooks well.

C.Do the reading assignments.

A.learn how to do research and write papers.

B.have some learning experience

C.learn about the course concretely and clearly

D.know how to participate in discussions.
4Higher level classes are taught mainly through ________

A long time ago, in 1893, in the United States, some people were talking about fruits and vegetables. They asked, “What are fruits and what are vegetables? How are fruits different from vegetables and vegetables different from fruits?” They talked for a long time and then they decided, “We eat vegetables as part of a meal, but we eat fruits before or after a meal.”
In real life, people do not think the dictionaries give the right meaning of a word. For example, the dictionaries say that tomatoes are fruits. But few people know that. Most people think they are vegetables. They call them vegetables and eat them as vegetables. To most people, fruits mean sweet things like apples, pears, oranges and watermelons.
What are vegetables then? We call many plants and grasses vegetables. Some people think some fruits are vegetables, such as apples, pears and bananas. But to most people, vegetables mean things like potatoes, onions and carrots.

In the United States, people like going camping for vacation
In the United States, people like going camping for vacation. They do everything for themselves to relax in the woods instead of staying at a modern hotel or a restaurant. They enjoy themselves far away from the noisy cities for a few days.
What should you prepare if you want to go camping like them? When you are camping, you make all of your own food. Barbeques(烤肉架) are very necessary while camping. You can bring bread, drinks, meat and vegetables to the camp. You’d better bring some wood and a lighter(打火机) to make a fire . Remember to put stones around the fire to make sure it won’t get too big and dangerous. When the fire is ready, you can cook food over it.
Children really like this activity at night. The whole family sit around the fire, eat their favorite food. Certainly they can sing songs and dance together. What a pleasant and exciting moment.
Camping is a fun activity for the family to do. Vacation does not have to mean going to visit a place far away. It could be as simple as setting up a tent in the nearby woods.

In the United States, 30 percent of the people have a “weigh
In the United States, 30 percent of the people have a “weight problem”. To many people the cause is obvious (明显的): they eat too much. But scientific evidence (证据) does little to support this idea. Going back to America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they at e more food.
The more the man ran, the greater loss of the body fat.
The more they ran, the greater increase in food intake.
Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They had to move back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

In the United States Monday is the beginning of the workweek;it is the day most Americans like least. It is not surprising that day they like most is Saturday.Saturday is the end of the workweek;it is the beginning of the weekend.Life is different on the weekend. Most Americans take care of their house, car,or garden. They get up late in the morning. They enjoy the feeling that the time seems to move more slowly. The week is for things you have to do,the weekend is for things you want to do.Some people may get in a car driving in the country. They like to take part in a sports activity outdoors. And on Saturday night they might go to a public eating place or movie. The idea of the weekend is a recent invention. In 1870 wealthy people began to speak of spending weekends in the country visiting friends. For most people, however, the workday was six-day long.

In the United States, many people try to save time.In many families, both the husband and wife work full-time,so their free time is very important to them. They look for quick and convenient ways to do their shopping and other things they want to do.
Many years ago, people had to go to the fish market to buy fish,to the butcher for meat and chicken,to fruit market for fresh fruit, and to the bakery for bread and rolls. Now most people go to just one place. They can buy fruit, bread, meat, fresh vegetables, frozen food, and beer at the local supermarket. They can also buy things for house, such as pots and pans, brooms and buckets. They can even buy socks and stockings, shoes, mitten, and sunglasses at supermarkets.
When Americans eat out, they often go to fast-food restaurants.Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are always ready.People order their meals at the counter and wait for their food just a few seconds or minutes. Then they carry the food to a table, eat it,and throw their trash away.It takes only 20 minutes or so to eat a meal at a fast-food restaurant.
Supermarkets and fast-food restaurants are therefore very important to people in the United States. They are quick and convenient, and that’s what people want when they are always looking for ways to save time.
Many years ago, people had to go to___to buy fresh fruit.
Many Americans ofthen eat at the fast restaurants to___.
Today, most people just go to one place, they can buy all kinds of foods and___.
