Prior to the Harry Potter novels
Harry is the only child of James and Lily Potter, having inherited his mother's green eyes and his father's untidy black hair. His birthday is July 31, coinciding with Rowling's. According to the most popular timeline of the books, his year of birth would be 1980.
Harry Potter is famous in the wizarding world for having survived a murderous attack when he was just one year old by Lord Voldemort, one of the most powerful and feared wizards ever known and the primary antagonist in the series. Harry's parents were killed in this incident on 31 October 1981 in their home in Godric's Hollow, while protecting Harry from Voldemort. James died first, dueling Voldemort in the entrance hall. Lily's dying act – sacrificing herself to save her son– placed Harry under ancient magic that protected him from Voldemort.
Subsequently, when Voldemort tried to kill Harry, the curse backfired, rebounding on him and leaving him bodiless while Harry survived unscathed, apart from his now-famous lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead. Voldemort did not die but lost his powers, and it led to his exile and eventual decline from a position of power and fear in the wizarding world. Ever since, Harry has been heralded as a celebrity – often touted as "The Boy Who Lived" – the only person known to survive Avada Kedavra, the Killing Curse. (Voldemort also survived when the spell rebounded onto him, although its full power may have been diminished.) Many in the wizarding world credit Harry for Voldemort’s downfall.
Despite surviving Voldemort's murder attempt, it isn't until the fifth book that Harry learns why Voldemort lost his powers. In the second book, Harry confirms this fact when he replies to a question asked of him by Tom Riddle:
I don't know why you lost your powers that night, but I know why you couldn't kill me . . .
After his parents' death, Harry was forced to live with his only remaining family–his mother's Muggle sister, Petunia Dursley, and her husband, Vernon, in the small town of Little Whinging, Surrey, England. The Dursleys live at Number Four, Privet Drive in a large, impeccably maintained house and seem moderately well off. However, throughout Harry's first eleven years, they neglect him in favour of their own son, Dudley, and attempting to remove all traces of Harry's magical self to make him 'normal', revealed nothing to him about his past and isolated him from the wizarding world.
Harry is categorised as a half-blood wizard, even though both his parents were magical. His mother Lily (Evans) Potter was Muggle-born, and according to Rowling, to those for whom blood purity matters, a Muggle-born is equivalent to a Muggle - and derogatively referred to as a "Mudblood". [1]
Family
Little is known about Harry's relations. His mother, Lily Evans, was born into a Muggle family, and after the death of his parents, Harry was sent to live with his maternal aunt, Petunia Dursley, and her family. Harry's father, James Potter, was born into a pure-blood wizarding family, to somewhat elderly (by wizarding standards) parents, apparently their only child. It's likely Harry is distantly related to other pure-blood families through his father, as Sirius Black once told him that all the old pure-blood families are related through intermarriage. (See the Black family tree) James and Lily left Harry a large inheritance of wizard money, which he uses for his Hogwarts supplies.
Harry may also be related to his godfather, Sirius Black. James and Sirius may have been first cousins once-removed - not surprising, given the size of the Black family. A Charlus Potter was married to Dorea Black, granddaughter of Phineas Nigellus Black. Some fans speculate that Dorea and Charlus may have been James' parents - however, this seems to contradict Rowling's statements that James' parents were "old in wizarding terms" when they died, because she has also said that wizards have "a much longer life-expectancy than Muggles" (Griselda Marchbanks is known to be over 160) - Dorea died at only 57. However, Charlus and Dorea were born into the same generation as Sirius' grandparents, so it is possible they might be James' parents. Regardless, since no living Potter relatives or any unrelated wizards named Potter have yet appeared in the series, it is possible that Charlus Potter was somehow related to Harry.

Life and adventures while at Hogwarts
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, eleven-year-old Harry learns he is wizard when Rubeus Hagrid, the gamekeeper at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and aide to Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, hand-delivers his invitation to attend Hogwarts. Previous letters from the school were blocked by his non-magical aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, who want nothing to do with magic. Hagrid tells Harry about his magical background and his fame in the wizarding community, although Harry soon learns to dislike his celebrity that causes many people to fawn over him or be resentful.
Harry soon begins his studies at Hogwarts and is sorted into Gryffindor House. He quickly becomes friends with Ron Weasley, and eventually Hermione Granger. Draco Malfoy, who has been sorted into Slytherin, becomes Harry's archnemesis. Harry shares his dormitory with Ron, Neville Longbottom, Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas. Harry's first year is marked by many events, such as being chosen as the new seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team due to his natural flying abilities. He is the youngest player in a century.
Evil wizard, Lord Voldemort has secretly emerged from hiding, returning to the wizarding world to seek the Philosopher's Stone in his quest to regain a physical body and immortality. Using Hogwarts Defence against the Dark Arts Professor Quirrell as a host body, Voldemort searches for the stone at the school. Voldemort is thwarted by Harry, with help from Ron and Hermione, and—unable to defeat Harry and seize the Stone—the Dark Lord flees, leaving Quirrell to die. After completing his first year at Hogwarts, Harry returns to the Dursleys knowing for the first time that there are people who care about him, and he now has a place to call “home.”
There is a difference in how the film version treats Harry's climactic struggle with Quirrell/Voldemort for the Stone. In the book, Quirrell is blistered and burned as a result of the magical protection provided by Lily Potter when he assaults Harry while attempting to seize the Stone from him; Harry manages to retain the Stone and is saved by Dumbledore, resulting in Voldemort escaping and leaving Quirrell to die. In the film version, Quirrell's body turns to ash and disintegrates (resulting in death) as a direct result of the struggle with Harry; Voldemort flees Quirrell's remains, injuring Harry in the process. Although Harry's actions were clearly in self-defence and justified in both versions, and whilst the effects were caused by the protection charm from Lily Potter (rather than any direct desire to kill on Harry's part), the death of Quirrell in the film is directly caused by Harry, rather than by Voldemort (as it is in the book).

2、言简意赅

　　一回,托一位同事为我买圆珠笔,再三再四地嘱他：“不要黑色的,记住,我不喜欢黑色,暗暗沉沉,肃肃杀杀.干万不要忘记呀,12支,全不要黑色.”
　　次日,同事把那一打笔交给我,天哪,我差点昏过去：12支,全是黑的.
　　责他、怪他,他振振有词地反驳：你一再强调黑的,黑的,忙了一天,昏沉沉地走进商场时,脑子中只有印象最深的两个词：12支,黑色,于是就一心一意地只找黑的买.
　　言之成理,我哑口无言.
　　当时,我如果言简意赅地说：“请为我买12支笔,要蓝色.”相信同事就不会买错了.

3、训海豚有术
海豚经过驯养,可以成为出色的马戏演员.驯养海豚主要靠物质刺激,完成一个动作,奖励一条鱼,让它形成条件反射.训练讲究循序渐进,由易到难.比如钻入圈这个节目,先让海豚学会钻圈,慢慢换一个冒烟的圈,再换一个有点儿火苗的圈,最后才换着火的圈.一开始就钻火圈,它当然不干.
　　训练海豚跳高也是采取同样的办法.驯兽师先在水面下拉上细绳,海豚每次从细绳上方通过就会被奖励一条鱼,以此形成条件反射.驯兽师不断抬高细绳,尝到甜头的海豚也每次都试图从细绳上方通过.细绳一点点抬高,逐渐放到了水面之上,而海豚也就逐渐变成了“跳高高手”.

美国标准石油公司里,有一位小职员名叫阿基勃特.他远行住旅馆的时候,总是在自己签名的下方写上“每桶四元标准石油”字样,在书信及收据上也不例外,签了名,就一定写上那几个字.他因此被同事叫做“每桶四元”,而他真名倒没有人叫了.公司董事长洛克菲勒知道这件事后,大感惊讶地说：“竟有职员如此努力宣扬公司的声誉,我要见见他.”于是邀请阿基勃特共进晚餐.
　　后来,洛克菲勒卸任,阿基勃特成了第二任董事长.

But there is also bad influence.Some of the young teenagers are addicted to computer games,and some even play games all night.Because of lacking in sleep,those students can not focus on in the class .As a result,they may fail in the exam.When they realize it is wrong to spend too much time playing games,it’s already too late.
I have remembered such a piece of news .An excellent student flunked (考试不及格) because he could not concentrate on his study for being too indulged in computer games.He spent nearly all the money on games,which was earned by his father's selling blood.When his father knelt down to beg him to return to school,he was too numb to show any regret.
The most serious harm of computer games come from their contents,which affects teenagers ' mental health.Many games involve violence,such as fighting and killing.When they enjoy the pleasure of success,a violent turn of mind is developed and rooted in them,which may induce future violent behaviour in their life.
So when computers' entertaining function is highly spoken of ,such a problem does deserve our serious concern.
In addition,long time's working before computer also does harm to health.The radiation from the computer can arose many uncomfortable feelings.,like a headache,poor eyesight.
At last,people who are fond of making friends on line should also be careful.Many convicts use Internet as a way to cheat.
Although it has many disadvantages ,Internet has become an indispensable part of people's life in recent years.In my point of view,it’s wrong to blame Internet itself,it’s all depend on the way we use it.

What takes the most part of our approaching to success?Many people will attribute it to luck,chance,background,talent and so on.However,I think there is nothing more important than our passion and interest.

N: Confirmed. Now Student Liu and Li, do you have any disagreements?
SecB: I don’t agree with him. Because he has no evidence to prove what he said. Our teacher is with us, he didn’t see anything. How could you say that you saw the scene?
LXY: Besides, you are only one person. Nobody else can prove your saying, am I right?

When I was a naughty boy, may be because of the influence of the film."Xiao Bing Zhang Ga",my dream was to be a soldier just like Zhang Ga. I thought if I was a soldier, I should be able to swim, dive and climb trees as he did. It seemed to be very wonderful. So I began to learn swimming, diving and climbing trees. I practiced every day and finally I could do them well. But when I entered junior high school and had the military training. I suddenly found that being a soldier was very difficult and I wasn’t strong enough to bear it . I had to give my dream up.
But I wasn’t discouraged, and I had new aim, which was to be a postman, or rather to be a newspaper boy. As a newspaper boy. And Chinese postmen had to stuff very thick newspapers into very small mailboxes from very narrow entrances. The job was far from what I had expected. So once again my dream fell through.

Honesty Is Gold
Honesty means speakingthe truth and being fair and upright in act. He who lies and cheats is dishonest.: Those who gain fortunes not by hard labour but by other means is dishonest.
Honesty is a good virtue. If you are honest all the time,you’ll be trusted and respected by others. A liar is always looked down upon and regarded as a black sheep by the people around. Once you lie, people will never believe you even if you speak the truth.
However, in the tide of commodity economy today, it seems that more and more people believe in money at the sacrifice of honesty. To them, among such things as health, beauty, m6ney, intelligence, honesty, reputation and talent, honesty is the only thing that can be east away. They don’t understand or pretend not to understand that honesty is the biggest fortune humans own, and that it is the prerequisite for doing everything well. I think these people areto be pitied.
In short, honesty is gold. Honest, your reputation will become great;dishonest, your name will be spoiled and your personality degraded. Therefore, we should never make such an excuse as "A little dishonesty is only a trifle thing. We should eradicate immediately the seed of dishonesty once it is sowed in our minds.

1.mental health of university students
There is no doubt that china has grow up rapidly during more than 30 years, which is too rapid to adapt to ,especially the new generation with the great social pressure .Under the big environment, Chinese college students have more and more mental problems, that means they have low mental health.
Generally speaking, health can be divided into three parts---physical health, mental health and adaptability of society, and at some sense, adaptability of society can be included in mental health.
Mental health, compared with physical health, refer to the active and positive condition of inner being. There is a general survey that shows that, of 100 college students, about 10 students have seriously considered committing suicide, and about 45 students say they are so depressed, and more than 30 freshmen feel overwhelmed a lot of free time.
I talked mainly from the campus environment to solve the mental problem; in fact, a college student’s mental health is caused of many reasons. In addition to the campus environment, there are social environment, and family environment. Compared with social environment, family environment is more important to human being’s personality. Family environment makes people special, and hold different personality.
Another reason that causes college students’ mental health is individual’s personality. Individual’s personality is more variable than environment. It can be shaped in later. College students as young, accept new ideas easily, and also change the personality easily. College students are supposed to have following personality: Firstly, good habits of life. College students should live in order. Doing exercise and eat on time. Secondly, good relationships with others. College students should open their hearts to others, with hot heart, talking and helping each other. Thirdly, optimistic attitude. College students should have an idea that there must be sunny days and cloudy days. The road of life is not plain. 2.competition and cooperation
Competition is a common phenomenon in our society . We compete when we play games, we try to do better than others in our study, and there is constant competition for jobs, fame, wealth and so forth. Therefore,we can say that, in a certain sense, competition is one of the motive forces of the development of our modern society.
It is often believed, that competition and cooperation are in opposition to each other. Some people stress competition, without which, in their eyes, there is no responsibility, no drive and ultimately, no progress. Others advocate cooperation whatever they do. They are of the opinion that the dependence of people on one another has increased, without which the society we live in can not keep going smoothly. In reality, we find that in many cases competition goes hand in hand with cooperation. Lets take a football game for example. During the game, one team is competing against the other, but each member of the team must cooperate with his teammates. Otherwise, they would lose the game no matter how skillful each individual player might be. It is clear that competition has much to do with cooperation.
As far as I'm concerned, I do not agree with the view that competition and cooperation are always in conflict with each other. In my opinion, while advocating competition. We should never forget cooperation. In our social life, cooperation is especially necessary because most work is fulfilled with or through other people. So Ive come to the conclusion that competition are equally important.
3 love and duty

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon! It is a great honor for me to stand here and give you a brief speech.
Today, I ` d like to show my personal viewpoint upon love and duty. To begin with, I want to ask you some questions. What`s love? What`s the meaning of duty? I `ve looked them up in the dictionary which says that “love” means strong feelings of attraction towards and affection for another adult. “Duty” means something that you feel is the right thing to do. Do you agree with this definition?
As everyone knows, it is likely that everybody in the world is loving or being loved by someone else. Then, what`s the relationship between love and duty? In my opinion, I believe that duty comes from love and love cannot live without duty.
On one hand, there is love, there is duty. According to a recent survey, about 78% of the college students think that love and duty should exist together at the same time.
Once upon a time, there was an old man visiting his wife in the nursing home every morning, just to have breakfast with her, who had got Alzheimer`s. Despite the fact that the wife no longer remembered who he was, the old man still visited her with the thought that “Although She doesn`t know me, I know who she is .” Obviously, we can draw the conclusion that duty is from love, and love is duty.
On the other hand, love without duty is incomplete. For example, if A loves B, while A doesn`t want to take his responsibility for this love, we can certainly say that it is not true love. Of course, this love never lasts long.
To prove my idea better, I will take my friend`s personal experience as an example. Once a friend of mine told me that the relationship between her and her boyfriend was broken up. I asked, ”Why?” She replied,” I don`t need someone to love me who doesn`t care about me, for he is not responsible. I don`t want a love which is not true.” I think she has made a correct choice. The love without duty is sure to be dull.
Therefore, love is not an individual. No duty, no love.
Whether you are a woman or man, old or young, whether you are longing for love or disappointed in love, whether you are loving or being loved by somebody else, whether the love is due to your daily work or the society, the people or the nation, you had better remember that: love is duty, and duty comes from love. Love and duty is everywhere during our lifetime!
