第一句发生在动词came之前,表示过去的过去,用过去完成时.
第二句只是叙述当时的情况,没有先后关系.而下一句after引导,则是有先后关系了,发生在动词turned之前.

Why did the shop assistant refuse to serve Dickie?
True eccentrics never deliberately set out to draw attention to themselves.They disregard social conventions without being conscious that they are doing anything extraordinary.This invariably wins them the love and respect of others,for they add colour to the dull routine of everyday life.
Up to the time of his death,Richard Colson was one of the most notable figures in our town.He was a shrewd and wealthy businessman,but most people in the town hardly knew anything about this side of his life.He was known to us all as Dickie and his eccentricity had become legendary long before he died.
Dickie disliked snobs intensely.Though he owned a large car,he hardly ever used it,preferring always to go on foot.Even when it was raining heavily,he refused to carry an umbrella.One day,he walked into an expensive shop after having been caught in a particularly heavy shower.He wanted to buy a $300 watch for his wife,but he was in such a bedraggled condition than an assistant refused to serve him.Dickie left the shop without a word and returned carrying a large cloth bag.As it was extremely heavy,he dumped it on the counter.The assistant asked him to leave,but Dickie paid no attention to him and requested to see the manager.Recognizing who the customer was,the manager was most apologetic and reprimanded the assistant severely.When Dickie was given the watch,the presented the assistant with the cloth bag.It contained $300 in pennies.He insisted on the assistant's counting the money before he left -- 30,000 pennies in all!On another occasion,he invited a number of important critics to see his private collection of modern paintings.This exhibition received a great deal of attention in the press,for though the pictures were supposed to be the work of famous artists,they had in fact been painted by Dickie.It took him four years to stage this elaborate joke simply to prove that critics do not always know what they are talking about.

1.b 当他读了第一个句子以后,所以是过去进行时
2.d 已经用了did not receive了,所以后面只跟名词(reply) 而不是 否定式的 (no reply).是a reply 而不是 the reply 因为不一定只有一种回复.
3.c informed someone of something是个固定句型,是告知某人某事的意思.

如果50便士不拿去买糖果吃,它们会在存钱罐里放相当长的一段时间.
rattle指的是呆在钱罐里发出哗楞哗楞的响声.
rattle for months:放在钱罐里数月听响儿

此句是现在完成进行时,表示一个动作从过去一直持续到现在还有可能持续到将来,例如 I have been waiting for you for hours now. for hours表示等人这个动作已经持续了几个小时了,now则表示到目前为止是up till now的缩写

1.对.few 本身具有否定含义,表示很少的,几乎没有.
2.我的理解是这样的：50便士的硬币和成磅的硬币.
fifty pence piece是固定表达,当说面值时用.eg.a two-cent piece 一枚二分硬币.或者是 a piece of two.
而pound coins 就是指英镑的硬币,比如1英磅,2英镑.
3.there 在此处肯定是指代作用.如果你结合这句的上下文来看,就不难发现there指代的是money box.

　　背诵一篇短文,仅仅读几遍是行不通的,一定要熟读到滚瓜烂熟的程度才行.单纯地反复阅读效果并不好,学习者应该在文章还没有完全记住前积极进行尝试再现,回忆不起来时再阅读.这样容易记住,保持时间也长.特别生疏的语句,注意多尝试再现几次.因为尝试再现是一种比阅读更积极的智力活动,又是一种自我检查的过程,使人更能集中精力,掌握识记内容的重点、难点,并及时改正记忆中的错误.开始时可短一些,容易一些,然后作一定幅度的调整.
　　背诵过程中,如果“卡壳”,应该进行追忆.追忆是有意和间接再现的形式,它需要付出很大的意志力,克服一定的困难,多方面寻找线索,进行积极灵活的思维.因此,不能一“卡壳”就立即停止背诵.文章通过理解消化,已纳入自己的知识系统,语句通过熟读试背,也已朗朗上口,如果再反复朗读几遍,就能流利地背诵下来.
　　复习背诵的时间用得越多,记住的效果就越佳.早晨背诵过的课文或知识,晚上睡前以及第二天起床后,应进行一次复背,并在每周六或周日再作适当的温习背诵,以后过一个月再复背一次.这样,可保证很长一段时期不会遗忘.这里需要提醒大家注意的是复习的时候可以把原文提炼成一个提纲,边看提纲,边复习背诵,这样记忆和熟练程度就会更加明显.下面是列提纲的一种形式,供大家参考.

2. 逗号是表达一个完整意思时几个并列项中间除最后一项外的停顿,用以分隔句子结构内的思想或要素；如果一个句子存在两个以上的并列项,前几个要用逗号隔开,而最后一项则需要用 and 连接；
如：A crowd of people gathered round him, a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter and an old man amiled at him.
3. 并列项的连接,一般说来逗号和 and 不需要重复使用,但是当其中一个并列项的长度达到一口气念下来气促时,and 前则需要用逗号隔开；
如：A crowd of people gathered round him ,and a lady stood calmly and rubbed his arm with soap and butter while the others were looking at him smiling.
4. 有时候,由于句子中起其他作用的逗号影响到句子的层次关系,and 前也需要用逗号隔开；
如：I did not answer, and he, too, kept silent. 我没有回答, (而)他也不作声.
5. 如果并列的分句之间出现其他结构的插入成分,插入成分的前后都需要用逗号隔开,结果也使得连接最后一个并列句的 and 前出现了逗号.
如：A crowd of people gathered round him,as it happened, and a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter,

说说我的理解
主语：Few things 谓语：could be more impressive 宾语：the peace
后面一堆都是修饰the peace 的定语从句.
什么样的peace呢?the peace that descends on deserted city streets at weekends 在周末降临在城市街道的peace
weekends发生了什么呢?when the thousands that travel to work every day are tucked away in their homes in the country.当大家都回乡下去了（随便翻译的,意思明白就好）.
把握好这几点,理解就很容易：没有什么比（当周末大家都回乡下的家去,而在城市街道降临的）那种宁静更令人难忘.
建议你背了这篇吧.

next 和the next的区别
next+以现在为标准的时间-即当谈到紧接着眼前这一周这一月这一年的下一周下一月下一年.
eg:I shall have been in thee army for fully three years by July next year.
the next+以过去或将来为标准的时间-即当谈到紧接过去或将来的某一周某一月某一年的下一周下一月下一年.
eg:The forign guests spend the first week in Beijing and the next week in Shanghai.
还有一点,
next+时间名词－前不可加任何介词
the next +时间名词－前可用适当介词（也可省略）
next用于一般将来时
例如：I will go to the park next day.
the next用于过去将来时
例如：I would go to the park the next day.THE NEXT DAY应该用于过去将来时..
NEXT DAY一般将来时.
THE FOLLOWING DAY用于两种时态.one day和some day在表示将来的某一天时,意思一样,但some day不能表示过去的某一天one day“某一天,有一天”既可用于一般过去时,也可用于一般将来时
