Until the early twentieth century,most coins were made of precious metals such as gold and silver,or they contained at least some gold or silver.By the middle of the twentieth century,all coins that people were using had no gold or silver and were made of less expensive metals.
Paper money has replaced metal money for most purposes,and now paper checks,plastic cards,and even electronic messages are replacing paper money.If this continues,we may soon find that we do not use money at all,but only a series of numbers in computers to buy and sell goods and services.

Until the early twentieth century, attempts to transfuse blood from one person to anther person were usually unsuccessful. Then in 1901,Karl Landsteiner,an Austrian scientist, discovered that blood was divided into four types. These four blood types were named A,B,AB,and O.Blood type O is the most common around the world. Blood type A is the second most common, and type AB is the least common. If people with type A blood are given type B blood, or people with type B blood are given type A blood, they will probably die.
In 1927,a Japanese doctor, Furukawa Takeji, carried out researh and came up with the idea that people with different blood types had different personalities. Type A people are said to be calm and serious; people with type B blood are curious, cheerful, and outgoing;people with type O blood are generous and honest;while those with type AB blood are caring, original , and careful.
In recent years, interest in blood types has grown in the United States, and one book, Eat Right for Your Type, has been a hit with people who want to lose weight.
1.What did Karl Landsteiner discover?
2.Which blood type is the most common and which is the least common?
3.What conclusion did the Janpances doctor get?
4.What kind of people are interested in Eat Right for Your Type?

Grandma Moses is among the most celebrated twentieth-century
Grandma Moses is among the most celebrated twentieth-century painters of the United States,yet she barely started painting before she was in her late seventies.She once said of herself,"I would never sit back in my rocking chair,waiting for someone to help me." No one could have done more in old age.
She was born Anna Mary Robertson on a farm in New York State,one of five boys and five girls.At twelve,she left home and was in domestic service until,at twenty-seven,she married Thomas Moses,the hired hand of one of her employers.They farmed most of their lives,first in Virginia and then in New York State,at Eagle Bridge.She had ten children,of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) pictures as a hobby,but only changed to oils in her old age because her hands had become too stiff (僵硬) to sew and she wanted to keep busy to pass the time.Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a fair,and were soon spotted by a dealer who bought everything she painted.Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art,and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York.
Between the 1930s and her death she produced some 2000 pictures:detailed and lively portrayals (描绘) of the rural (乡村) life she had known for so long,with a marvelous sense of color and form."I think real hard till I think of something real pretty,and then I paint it," she said.

seventeen twentieths --> 17/20 (二十分之十七)
seventeen twenty-firsts -->17/21(二十一分之十七)
seventeen twenties -->1720s (18世纪20年代)
seventeen twenty-first --> 1721 (可以表示1721年)

Until the twentieth centurycigarettes were not an important threat (威胁) to public health.Men used tobacco mainly in the form of cigars,chewingtobacco,pipe tobacco,and snuff (鼻烟).Most women did not usetobacco at all.
The cigarette industry began in the 1870swith the development of the cigarette making machine.This made it possible toproduce great numbers of cigarettes very quickly,and it reduced the price.Today cigarette-smoking is a widespread habit.About forty-three percent of theadult men and thirty-one percent of the adult women in the United Statessmoke cigarettes regularly.Men,as a group,smoke more than women.
Income,education and occupation all play apart in determining a person’s smoking habits.City people smoke more thanpeople living on farms.Well-educated men with high incomes are less likely tosmoke cigarettes than men with fewer years of schooling and lower incomes.Onthe other hand if a well-educated man with a high income smokes at all,he islikely to smoke more packs of cigarettes per day.
The situation is somewhat different forwomen.There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomesand higher education than among the lower income and lower educational groups.These more highly-educated women tend to smoke more heavily.
Among teenagers,the picture is similar.There are fewer teenage smokers from upper-income,well-educated families and fewer from families living in farm areas.Highschool students who are preparing for college are less likely to smoke thanthose who do not plan to continue their education after high school.Childrenare most likely to start smoking,if one or both of their parents smoke.(284words)

The middle of the twentieth century”

Advertising is a highly developed twentieth-century industry
Advertising is a highly developed twentieth-century industry.The development of radio,television,cinema,magazines and newspapers has gone hand in hand with the development of advertising.Why is advertising so popular?Is it a waste of money?It has been proved again and again that repeated advertising increases product sales.Since it increases production,the price can be reduced.Therefore advertising,instead of making a product more expensive,makes it cheaper.
Advertising is now a scientific business.Once managers would say jokingly," I know that half of what I spend on advertising is wasted,but I don't know which half." Now,all parts of an advertising programme are properly measured and researched.
What is meant by what managers said in the second paragraph?
A.All the money on advertising was wasted.
B.Not all the advertisements were well designed.
C.All the managers knew about advertising then.
D.Managers spent no money on advertising

"I know that half of what I spend on advertising is wasted,but I don't know which half."
所以应该是 不是每个广告都是精心设计的,而且段落后尾有提到,(now all parts of an advertising programme are properly measured and researched) 广告的每一部分都适当的测量和研究!

intend 的用法包括 intend to do sth.,intend sb./sth.to do sth.
楼主的句子中intend的用法属于第二种,即:(sb.) intend the Museum to do sth..

Until the twentieth century cigarette smoking was not a widespread habit.The cigarette industry started in the 1870's with the development of the cigarette manufacturing machines.It helped produce great numbers of cigarettes very quickly and reduce the price greatly.And consequently more and more people,both men and women,began to smoke cigarettes.Men as a group,however,smoke more than women.But the highest proportion of smokers are found in the age group of 24--44,regardless of sex difference.
Income,education,and occupation all play a part in determining a person's smoking habits.City people smoke more than people living on farms.Well-educated men with high incomes are less likely to smoke cigarettes than men with fewer years of schooling and lower incomes.On the other hand,if a well-educated man with a higher income smokes at all,he is likely to smoke more packs of cigarettes per day.
The situation is somewhat different for women.There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomes and higher education than among the lower income and lower education groups.These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily.
Among teenagers the picture is similar.There are fewer teenage smokers from upper-income,well-educated families,and fewer from families living in farm areas.High school students who are preparing for college are less likely to smoke than those who do not plan to continue their education after high school.Children are most likely to start smoking if one or both of their parents smoke.
