B

考查非谓语动词。句意:我从没见过一部莎士比亚的剧作演的如此只好,过去分词做宾补表示发生过的被动的动作,和被修饰词是动宾关系,故选B。

What's in a name According to Shakespeare's
“What’s in a name?”According to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet,there is not too much.“That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”But Shakespeare may have been wrong.In most cultures,names matter a great deal.
For example.The last name,or,surname,must also be considered when choosing a first and middle name.A name like Lester Chester Hester would sound poetic,but odd.Parents would avoid names that remind them of people they don’t likeThe popularity of certain names can change with each new generation.Names that were once common,like Fanny or Elmer,sound old-fashioned today.But other names—like John and David,Mary and Sarah—have stood the test of time and continue to be favorites.
Sometimes nicknames are short forms of a longer name.As children grow up,they may decide for themselves which nickname they wish to be called.
1When choosing names for their children,Americans usually consider___.
Awhether the name has a good meaning Bwhether the name sounds poetic
Cwhether the name has already been taken by others
Dwhether the name gives a good impression
2 Which of the following names may sound old-fashioned today?
AFanny BMary CJohn DDavid

that在这个句子中是关系代词,指代"the room";which也是关系代词,所以that可以用"which"替换.(3正确)

英语翻译The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare's most beau
英语翻译
The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare's most beautiful plays and,conversely,his ugliest.Juxtaposed within the same conceptual frame are heavenly and musical harmonies,romantic love,materialism,and racism.This Norton Critical Edition has been carefully edited to make The Merchant of Venice,its surrounding history,and the history of its critical reception and rewritings accessible to readers.The text of this edition is based on the 1600 First Quarto,with light editing and substantial explanatory annotations by Leah S.Marcus.
"Sources and Contexts" largely focuses on the character of Shylock and the issue of anti-Semitism in the play.Materials included are diverse,and at times contradictory,allowing readers to draw their own conclusions.Examples include seventeenth-century anti-Semitic literature,an essay from the same period defending Jews and arguing for their repatriation in England,an examination of the Christian theology of the play,and readings of The Merchant of Venice as exclusionary for Jews,women,and people of color.
"Criticism" collects twenty-one diverse interpretations.In addition to Shylock and the question of anti-Semitism,these essays address The Merchant of Venice in the context of postcolonial,feminist,and queer theory and explore relevant issues of economic status and organization.
"Rewritings and Appropriations" includes excerpts from dramatic,musical,and other literary adaptations of The Merchant of Venice,as well as a selection of poems,most of them from the twentieth century,on the character of Shylock.
A Selected Bibliography is also included.
About the Series:No other series of classic texts equals the caliber of the Norton Critical Editions.Each volume combines the most authoritative text available with the comprehensive pedagogical apparatus necessary to appreciate the work fully.Careful editing,first-rate translation,and thorough explanatory annotations allow each text to meet the highest literary standards while remaining accessible to students.Each edition is printed on acid-free paper and every text in the series remains in print.Norton Critical Editions are the choice for excellence in scholarship for students at more than 2,000 universities worldwide.

Sonnet 18
Shakespeare
"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance,or nature's changing course,untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest;
So long as men can breathe,or eyes can see,
So long lives this,and this gives life to thee.

生平如下:
William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616)[a] was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.[1] He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon".[2][b] His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays,[c] 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.[3]
Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.[4]
Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613.[5][d] His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights.
Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. In 1623, two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare's.
Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry".[6] In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

(1)诺森伯里亚方言——洪伯河(the Humber)以北的方言;
(2)梅尔西亚方言——界乎洪伯河与泰晤士河之间的英国中部地区的方言;
(3)肯特(Kentish)方言——居住在英国东南部地区的朱待人的方言;
(1)早期现代英语时期——公元1500年至1700年;
(2)后期现代英语时期——公元1700年至当前.

The works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth are “rocket-boosters
The works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth are “rocket-boosters” to the brain and better therapy than self-help books, researchers will say this week.
Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the Bard and other classical writers has a beneficial effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and cause moments of self-reflection.
Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S Eliot and others.
They then “translated” the texts into more “straightforward”, modern language and again monitored the readers’ brains as they read the words.
Scans showed that the more “challenging” prose (散文)and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the more pedestrian versions.
Scientists were able to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and record how it “lit up” as the readers encountered unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentence structure.
This “lighting up” of the mind lasts longer than the initial electrical spark, shifting the brain to a higher gear, encouraging further reading.
The research also found that reading poetry, in particular, increases activity in the right hemisphere (半球)of the brain, an area concerned with “autobiographical memory”, helping the reader to reflect on and reappraise their own experiences in light of what they have read. The academics said this meant the classics were more useful than self-help books.
Philip Davis, an English professor who has worked on the study with the university’s magnetic resonance centre, will tell a conference this week: “Serious literature acts like a rocket-booster to the brain.
"The research shows the power of literature to shift mental pathways, to create new thoughts, shapes and connections in the young and the elderly alike.”
小题1:How do classics such as Shakespeare and Wordsworth benefit the readers?
A.They set off far less electrical activity in the brain.
B.They light up the mind shorter than the initial electrical spark.
C.They shift physical pathways in the young and the elderly.
D.They draw readers’ attention and help make self-examination.
小题2:Why does the author mention” They then” translated”… modern language“?
A.To prove that classics are more useful than ordinary versions.
B.To show self-help books act like rocket-boosters to the brain.
C.To tell serious literature sets off far less electrical activity.
D.To make known ordinary versions set off more electrical activity
小题3:What can we conclude according to the researchers?
A.Self-help books are more valuable than classics.
B.Serious literature lights up the mind shorter than ordinary versions.
C.The right hemisphere of the brain is related to autobiographical memory.
D.Literature has a beneficial effect only on the mind of the young.
小题4:Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Ordinary Versions Create New Thoughts
B.Modern Language Increases the Brain
C.Classics Help lmprove the Brain Activity
D.Self-help Books, Rocket-boosters

William Shakespeare was born to John Shakespeare and mother Mary Arden some time in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. There is no record of his birth, but his baptism was recorded by the church, thus his birthday is assumed to be the 23 of April. His father was a prominent and prosperous alderman in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, and was later granted a coat of arms by the College of Heralds. All that is known of Shakespeare's youth is that he presumably attended the Stratford Grammar School, and did not proceed to Oxford or Cambridge. The next record we have of him is his marriage to Anne Hathaway in 1582. The next year she bore a daughter for him, Susanna, followed by the twins Judith and Hamnet two years later.
Seven years later Shakespeare is recognized as an actor, poet and playwright, when a rival playwright, Robert Greene, refers to him as "an upstart crow" in A Groatsworth of Wit. A few years later he joined up with one of the most successful acting troupe's in London: The Lord Chamberlain's Men. When, in 1599, the troupe lost the lease of the theatre where they performed, (appropriately called The Theatre) they were wealthy enough to build their own theatre across the Thames, south of London, which they called "The Globe." The new theatre opened in July of 1599, built from the timbers of The Theatre, with the motto "Totus mundus agit histrionem" (A whole world of players) When James I came to the throne (1603) the troupe was designated by the new king as the King's Men (or King's Company). The Letters Patent of the company specifically charged Shakespeare and eight others "freely to use and exercise the art and faculty of playing Comedies, Tragedies, Histories, Inerludes, Morals, Pastorals, stage plays ... as well for recreation of our loving subjects as for our solace and pleasure."
Shakespeare entertained the king and the people for another ten years until June 19, 1613, when a canon fired from the roof of the theatre for a gala performance of Henry VIII set fire to the thatch roof and burned the theatre to the ground. The audience ignored the smoke from the roof at first, being to absorbed in the play, until the flames caught the walls and the fabric of the curtains. Amazingly there were no casualties, and the next spring the company had the theatre "new builded in a far fairer manner than before." Although Shakespeare invested in the rebuilding, he retired from the stage to the Great House of New Place in Statford that he had purchased in 1597, and some considerable land holdings ,where he continued to write until his death in 1616 on the day of his 52nd birthday.
In his time William wrote 13 Comedies, 13 Historical Plays, 6 Tragedies, 4 Tragicomedies, as well as many sonnets (154) , which were mostly dedicated to his patron, Henry Wriothsley, The Earl of Southampton.
1556 - Anne Hathaway is born.
1564 - William Shakespeare is born in April (probably the 23rd) in Stratford-On-Avon (94 miles from London.)
1582 - Marries Anne Hathaway on November 27.
1583 - Susanna Shakespeare is born.
1585 - The twins Judith and Hamnet Shakespeare are born.
1592 - After leaving Stratford for London, William was recognized as a successful actor, as well as a leading poet. He was a member of 'The Chamberlain's Men'.
1596 - Hamnet dies at the age of eleven. Shakespeare becomes a "gentleman" when the College of Heralds grants his father a coat of arms.
1597- He bought a large house called "The Great House of New Place".
1599 - The 'Globe Theater' is built from the pieces of 'The Theater' in July.
1603 - 'The Lord Chamberlain's Men' became 'The King's Men' on May 19.
1613 - The 'Globe Theatre' burns during a performance of Henry VII when a canon fired on the roof sets fire to the straw thatch. The theatre is rebuilt, but Shakespeare retires.
1616 - April 23, in Stratford on his 52nd birthday he died.

Shakespeare said,'journeys end in lovers meeting'.What an extraordinary thought!Personally,I have not experienced anything remotely close to that,but I'm more than willing to believe Shakespeare had.It was Shakespeare who also said,'love is blind'.I understand as tiny and as insignificantly as humanly possible,and how it can actually ache in places that you didn't know you had inside you,and it doesn't matter how many new haircuts you get or gyms you join,you still go to bed going over every detail,and wonder what you did wrong or how you could misunderstood.And how in the hell,for the brief moment,you could think that you were that happy?And sometimes you can even convince yourself that she'll see the light and show up at your door.And after all that you will go somewhere new and you'll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again,and little pieces of your soul finally come back.And all that fuzzy stuff those years of your life that you wasted that will eventually begin to fade.

Shakespeare once called the English countryside “the preciou
Shakespeare once called the English countryside “the precious stone set in the silver sea”- and he is not the last to sing high praises of its beauty and historical charm(魅力).
The countryside is particularly beautiful during the summer, especially in August and September. As one travels the countryside, you’ll find more of its treasures: so many plants and animals, romantic castles(浪漫的城堡), secret gardens, and villages so unchanged in the last decades that they seem to have been caught under a fairy’ s spell.
Must-sees include Derbyshire, called “the heart of England” and home to the National Park. The great peaks were the muse(创作灵感)of the Bronte sisters (and if you love the book Jane Eyre, you can visit North Lees hall, where the real Eyre family once lived).
History lovers will enjoy a visit to Lincoln city (its most famous son is Lord Alfred Tennyson). It is also known for its cathedral(大教堂), the charming tea shops, a small castle. One would never guess its violent past—built by Romans, it was once a center for arrow(箭) making.
Harry Potter fans shouldn’t miss a visit to Alnwick, which is better recognized as the “Hogswarth” in the movies.
Let’s not leave out the Wessex region, where one can see one of England’s greatest mysteries, Stone Henge. You can also go to the City of Bath, which has been famous for its medicines springs since the Roman times. Other popular tractions include Salisbury Cathedral, and landscaped(景色优美的) gardens of Stourhead, and the cobbled(用鹅卵石铺的) streets of Shaftesbury. This is also home to Oxford, one of the world’s most famous universities.
Art lovers will also like a visit to East Anglia, whose landscapes inspired the painter Constable (he was born in Dedham village). This is also home of the University City of Cambridge, and the famous architectural(建筑上的) attraction, King’s College Chapel. Be sure to visit the aircraft museum of Duxford.

Shakespeare is above all writers,at least above all modern w
Shakespeare is above all writers,at least above all modern writers,the poet of nature;the poet that holds up to his readers a faithful mirror of manners and of life.
His characters are not modified by the customs of partivular places,un practised by the rest of the world;by the peculiarities of studies or professions,which can operate but upon small numbers; or by the accidents of transient fashions or temporary opinions:they are the genuine progeny of common humanity,such as the world will always supply,and observation will always find.
His persons act and speak by the influence of those general passions and principles by which all minds are agitated,and the whole system of life is continued in motion.
In the writings of other poets a character is too often an individual; in those of Shakespeare it is commonly a apecies.

第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)
The writing of Shakespeare are today little read by young people in Britain.His young readership is limited to those who choose to study literature at university.
Shakespeare’s work, together with most other classics, is seen as remote, and written in a 400-year- old version of English that is about as inviting as toothache.
Still, in British schools, it is necessary to study the poet, and when something is made compulsory, usually the result is boredom, resentment(憎恨) or both.
This was my experience of the classics at school.But when I reached my late teenage years, I had a change of heart.Like every other young person since the dawn of time, the world confused me.I wanted answers, so I turned to books to find them.
I went on to take a PhD in literature and have taught it in Britain and China.I have never regretted it.There is something in literature that people want, even if they don’t read books.You see this in the popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works, the recent film version of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice being a case in point.These popular adaptations may help increase people’s interest in the classics.
Reading a simplified Romeo and Juliet may perhaps lead to a reading of Shakespeare’s actual plays.If that is the case, then I welcome the trend.But do not make the mistake of thinking that it is the same thing.Shakespeare is a poet.His greatness is in his language.Reading someone else’s rewriting of his works is like peeling a banana, throwing away the fruit, and eating the skin.Take on the original.It really is worth the effort.
1.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The language used in classics is no longer in use today.

B.British students usually find compulsory reading dull.

C.Only those studying literature read Shakespeare’s works.

D.For British people, Shakespeare’s works are no longer classics.
2.According to the passage, the writer _____ .
A.has liked literary classics since an early age

B.was forced to read the classics for a PhD

C.turned to literature to seek answers in his teens

D.thinks only people who read books like literature
3.The underlined phrase “a case in point” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “_____”.
A.a great hit B.a good example

C.a movie adaptation D.a popular phenomenon
4.What does the writer intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The fruit of a banana is more useful than its skin.

B.The rewriting trend does more harm than good.

C.Readers should try to read the original versions.

D.Readers need to learn the language in the classics.
