首先学习中国文学,需要分析、归纳之类的精细的研究,所以我觉得用study比较好.
其次我觉得第一句话后半部分“so we were learning Chinese literature rather than Chinese language”用现在完成时比较好,因为学习中国文学是从过去一直到现在一直在做的一件事.你用一般过去时的话我会感觉你是在强调曾经学习过文学【但是现在已经不学了】这种感觉.
还有下一句,也是那个道理我觉得用完成时较好：

我个人觉得firstly、secondly、thirdly是中学作文中最好的用来标识自己条理,思路清晰的方法了.
没有人会觉得用大词,用复杂的词来写作文就是作文水平高.英语作文最忌讳的就是把自己搞得锦上添花,姹紫嫣红了.
如果您已经是大学英语专业大三或者大四的学生,或者托付雅思都在准备了,那么就要试着用学过的同义词,近义词来表述,因为那个时候为了表明自己是专业人士,才可以试着用大词.

1.固定搭配 distinguish A from B,意思是“辨别A与B”.
而 distinguish the right from the wrong 辨别是非
2.固定短语 be of great help = be very helpful
如果没有of,则句子主语they和help无法对应：他们是帮助?
3.两种都可以,句意基本相同,但是用法不同.
