Jack angrily threw the papers on my desk."What''s wrong?" I asked.
"Next time you want to change anything,ask me first," he said.
How dare he treat me like that,I thought.I had changed one long sentence,and corrected grammar – something I thought I was paid to do.It''s not that I hadn''t been warned."He's responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm ," one secretary told me.
One day,his behavior reduced me to tears.I walked angrily to his office,"What?" he said.
"Jack,I 've never had anyone speak to me that way.It's unprofessional and it's wrong for me to allow it to continue," I said."I want to make a promise.I will be a friend.You deserve that." I said."Everybody does." I moved the chair smoothly and easily and closed the door behind me.
There were no other episodes from Jack.Every time I saw him in the hall,I smiled at him.After all,that's what friends do.A few weeks later,I discovered I had breast cancer.And it was very serious.One day,the door to my small hospital room opened and there stood Jack.I waved him in and over to my bed.He put a bundle beside me."Tulips" he said.I smiled,not understanding.He cleared his throat.“If you plant them when you get home,they will come up next spring.I just want you to know that I think you will be there to see them when they come up.”"Thank you!" When I was sixteen,I left school and went to work in a butcher’s shop.The manager was a young man,only two years older than I,but he was not honest.When people asked for good meat,he would sell them something bad.Sometimes,he did not give enough change,and people did not notice that.
One day,just before Christmas,we decided to stop working earlier because we had sold out all our meat,except one small turkey.When I was going to close the door,a woman rushed in and said that she wanted a big turkey.The manager tried to sell her the small one.“It’s too small.” She said.The manager said he would get another one and went to the back of the shop with the turkey.I went after him to see what he was going to do.He pulled the small turkey to make it look bigger,and then came back and said,“Here’s a bigger one.”
“Yes,”the woman said,“but not much bigger.I’ll take both of them.”
