You may send e-mail and surf the web almost every day and take them for granted. Have you ever stopped to realize that not long ago neither of them existed? What was merely and idea 50 years ago today is a vast collection of computers and applications such as the World Wide Web crossing the planet. The ARPANet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) which is the grandparent of the Internet started with only four computers in 1969, today over 95 million across the world from our Internet. The World Wide Web is even younger than the Internet , it is very recent. In 1991, a computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee created the first program that worked on his employer’s computer system enabling people to link their documents and files together. Today, you can visit more than 25 million web sites.
It is easy to get the Internet and the Web confused, but they are not the same thing. The largest network in the word is the Internet. It is the actual physical network made up of wires, cables, and satellites (See Figure 7-2.). It is like a highway that connects you to millions of other people and organizations located throughout the world. The Internet is a huge computer network available to nearly everyone with a microcomputer and a means to connect to it. The Web ( See Figure 7-3. ) , also known as the World Wide Web or WWW, is an Internet service that provides a multimedia interface to numerous resources available on the Internet.
The Uses of the Internet and the Web
Every day over a billion users from every country in the world use the Internet and the Web. What are they doing? The most common uses are the following:
Communicating is by far the most popular activity. You can even exchange e-mail with your family and friends located almost anywhere in the world (See Figure 7-4.). You can join and listen to discussions and debates on a wide variety of special-interest topics. You can chat “live” with others. You can even create your own personal Web page for friends and family to visit.
Shopping or using electronic commerce is one of the fastest-growing Internet applications. You can visit a cybermall or window shop at best stores, look for the latest fashions, search for bargains, and make purchases. You can purchase goods using checks, credit cards, or electronic cash. (See Figure 7-5.)
Searching for information has never been more convenient. (See Figure 7-6. ) You can access some of the world’s largest libraries directly from your home computer. You can visit virtual libraries, search through their stacks, read selected items, and even check out books.
Entertainment options are nearly endless. You can find music, movies, magazines, and computer games. You will find live concerts, movie previews, book clubs, and interactive live games.
