1.It is in his spare time when Robert teaches himself English and Japanese.

between是介词,后面跟宾格.I=>me

Dear Robert,
i am glad to hear from you.
in your last letter, you asked me if i once suffered something setbacks in my daily life and how to adjust my attitude to deal with it.
that is a good question.
of course, not only i but also everyone would encount setbacks in our life.
i am not a smart boy, so i ever tried very hard to catch my classmate in studying. but the loser is always me. i am very frustrated and painful, then i close myself in the room and spent my time with books instead of go outside for fun. after a year, i learned much from book and i feel something good has rooted in my mind.
just as Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem:
"Finish each day
And be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and
Absurdities have crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can."
In short, learn from past mistakes. One setback is nothing if you really want something and are willing to work for it. Move on with your life. Just keep reaching for your goals and you will achieve them.

Robert Frost was perhaps one of the most popular and beloved of the twentieth
century American poets. In many ways his works are related to nature and his New
England surroundings. To Frost, nature is a source of wisdom as well as a source
of joy.Nearly every poem he wrote is filled with a sense of nature's

1894 the New York Independent published Frost's poem My Butterfly. From 1897 to
1899 Frost studied at Harvard University, but left without receiving a degree.
When he sent his poems to the Atlantic Monthly, they were returned with this
note,"We regret that the Atlantic has no place for your wonderful poems." In
1912 Frost went to England. There he published his first collection of poems,A
Boy's Will,at the age of 39.It was followed by North Boston(1914),which
gained international reputation. The collection contains one of Frost's
best--known poems,Mending Wall.As a four--time winner of the Pulitzer Prize,
Frost did not receive these recognitions until his later years when his poetic
brilliance was finally recognized.

英语翻译
Robert was walking home from school one day.A boy in front of him fell over and dropped all of his things.Robert stopped and helped the boy pick them up.They were going the same way,so he helped to carry some of his things. When they walked,Robert learned that the boy’s name was Tom.
When they arrived at Tom’s home,Robert was invited in for a coke and they watched some videos. That afternoon passed happily with a few laughs and some small talks. When it was getting dark,Robert went home. They often saw each other at school, had lunch together once or twice a week, and then they both finished junior middle school. They entered the same high school. They sometimes saw and talked with each other over the years.
Just three weeks before they finished high school,Tom had a long talk with Robert.Tom asked Robert if he still remembered the day when they first met.“Do you know why I was carrying so many things home that day?” asked Tom.
“You see,I cleared my locker because I didn’t want to leave anything to anyone else.I had put away some of my mother’s sleeping pills and I was going home to kill myself. But after we spent some times together talking and laughing,I gave up my plan.So you see,Robert, when you picked up those things that day,you did a lot more. You saved my life.”

Robert Ballard was born in 1942. From an early age, he loved
Robert Ballard was born in 1942. From an early age, he loved the sea. Ballard grew up in Southern California. He spent his free time at the beach near his home. He enjoyed fishing and swimming. He even learned to dive.

When Ballard wasn’t at the ocean, he loved reading about it. At age 10, he read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a book which describes the undersea adventures of Captain Nemo. Ballard decided he wanted to be like Captain Nemo when he grew up. His parents helped him follow his dream.
Ballard was a hardworking student. He spent many years learning all he could about the ocean. By the age of 28, he was an expert. In 1970, he took a job as a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. There he studied underwater mountains of the Atlantic Ocean. He came up with ways to predict(预知)volcanoes under the oceans. Working with other scientists, Ballard also found previously(以前)unknown sea animals. These animals lived far below the ocean’s surface, where scientists had believed no animals could live.
By the 1980s, Ballard’s interests changed. He developed unmanned(无人的)vehicles to explore the ocean bottom. His first find, the well-known ship Titanic, made Ballard famous. He was not happy with just one big find, however. He looked for — and found — other well-known ships. One was the German battleship Bismarck. Another was the U.S.S. Yorktown, an aircraft carrier (航空母舰) that sank during World War II.
Today Robert Ballard is still an underwater explorer. He also heads an organization that encourages students to learn about science. Ballard hopes that some of the students will follow in his footsteps. After all, the world’s huge oceans are mostly unknown. Who knows what remains to be discovered under the sea?

c. He found the famous ship Titanic.
d. He became an expert in science.
A.b-c-d-a B.d-b-c-a C.b-d-c-a D.d-c-a-b

四、阅读:(30分)
A
Robert Spring, a 19th century forger (伪造者), was so good at his profession that hs was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1838 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he prospered(繁荣)by selling his small but genuine collection of early US autographs (亲笔签名). Discovering his ability at copying handwriting he began imitating the signatures of George Washington and Benjimin Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection (被发现). He sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale, Forgers have a hard time selling products. A forger cannot approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways of making their works look real. For example, they buy old books and use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals
In Spring’s time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states, so Spring invented a respectable young lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts (手稿) belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. However, all this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.
56. Robert Spring spent 15 years ________.
A. running a bookstore in Philadelphia B. as owners of old books
C. selling real signatures of famous AmericansD. as a forger
57. Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada?
A. There was less chance that his forgeries would be discovered there.
B. The prices were much higher in England and Canada.
C. There was a greater demand there than in America
D. Britan was Spring’s birthplace.
58. After the Civil War there was a great demand in Britain for ________
A. Civil War battle plans B. southern manuscripts and letters
C. the signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin D. southern money
59. Which of the following about Miss Fanny Jackson is TRUE?
A. She was Robert Spring’s customer.
B. She was an imaginary person created by Spring.
C. She was a little-known girl who sold her father’s papers to make money.
D. She was the only daughter of General Stonewall Jackson.
