The first automobile was invented more than two hundred years ago.It used steam for power and
had wooden wheels. The first automobile may have been simple and primitive, but it was an extremely
important invention. The automobile today is the primary means of land transportation. It has produced
more changes in our daily life than any other machine.
Almost all gasoline engines work in the same way—with four movements,or strokes,of a piston
in a cylinder. The first stroke pulls the fuel mixture ( gasoline and air) into the cylinder. The second
stroke compresses the fuel mixture.A spark plug produces a spark that ignites the fuel mixture and
causes the third stroke. The final stroke removes any waste gases which might remain in the cylinder.
The preceding paragraph explains what happens inside the cylinder to make the piston move. When
the piston is pushed down by the explosion in the third stroke,it pushes the connecting rod. This rod
rotates the crankshaft. The crankshaft is connected to other parts which turn the wheels. Most cars
today have four,six,or eight cylinders.

Nitrogen dioxide is a pollutant emitted by automobile
Nitrogen dioxide is a pollutant emitted by automobiles.Catalytic converters, devices designed to reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions, have been required in all new cars in Donia since 1993,and as a result, nitrogen dioxide emissions have been significantly reduced throughout most of the country.Yet although the proportion of new cars in Donia’s capital city has always been comparatively high, nitrogen dioxide emissions there have showed only an insignificant decline since 1993.
Which of the following,if true, most helps to explain the insignificant decline in nitrogen dioxide emissions in Donia’s capital city?
A.More of the cars in Donia’s capital city were made before 1993 than after 1993.
B.The number of new cars sold per year in Donia has declined slightly since 1993.
C.Pollutants other than nitrogen dioxide that are emitted by automobiles have also been significantly reduced in Donia since 1993
D.Many Donians who own cars made before 1993 have had catalytic converters installed in their cars.
E.Most car trips in Donia’s capital city are too short for the catalytic converter to reach its effective working temperature.

Greek, from autos same, -self, self
1 : self : same one
2 : automatic : self-acting 自动的
mobile 词源:Middle English mobyll, from Anglo-French moble, from Latin mobilis, from movēre to move,可移动的
automobile :a usually four-wheeled automotive vehicle designed for passenger transportation

Not all past predictions have been proved wrong. A few of them have been surprisingly accurate Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the internet years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology or if people really needed it in their lives or not. Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past.
Robot Helpers
Where’s the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere, of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other working environments.
Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes.
So why hasn’t happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy(笨拙的). And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.
Telephones of tomorrow?
In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet.
Why? The technology worked fine, but it overlooked (忽略) something obvious: people desire for privacy. Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just stepped out of the shower?
Probably not — it could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? It’s not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination. Keep watching the news or perhaps the sky outside your window to see what the future will bring.
1. The passage mainly deals with______.
A. predictions that can catch our imagination
B. predictions that haven’t come true
C. new technology can benefit our life
D. predictions that have come true
2. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
B. Predictions don’t need to consider people’s practical use of the technology.
C. Not all the high-tech things people thought we’d be using by now are widely used.
D. High-tech things are not always convenient to people’s life.
3. Robot Helpers haven’t been used in most people’s homes because ______.
A. using the kind of robots at home is simply a waste of time and money
B. the kind of robots hasn’t been developed yet
C. people find it difficult to control the kind of robots
D. the kind of robots won’t bring people practical use
4. How does the writer find the flying car?
A. It is too difficult to imagine. B. It is too crazy an idea to realize.
C. It is likely to appear in the future. D. It has been the focus of the news.

As of November 2009,China is the largest auto market in the world.China's automobile industry has been in rapid development since the early 1990s.In 2009,China produced 13.79 million units of automobile,of which 10.38 million units were passenger cars (sedans, sport untility vehicles (SUV),multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) and crossovers),and 3.41 million units were commercial vehicles (buses, trucks, and tractors).Of the automobiles produced,44.3% are local brands (BYD,Chery,Geely,Hafei,Jianghuai (JAC),Chang'an (Chana),Great Wall,Roewe etc.),the rest being produced by joint ventures with foreign car makers such as Volkswagen,General Motors,Hyundai,Nissan,Honda,Toyota etc. Most of the cars manufactured in China are sold within China, with only 369,600 cars being exported in 2009.
China's annual automobile production capacity first exceeded one million in 1992.By 2000,China was producing over two million vehicles. After China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001,the development of the automobile market further accelerated.Between 2002 and 2007,China's national automobile market grew by an average 21 percent,or one million vehicles year-on-year.In 2006,China’s vehicle production capacity successively exceeded six, then seven million, and in 2007,China produced over eight million automobiles.[6] In 2008,9.345 million motor vehicles were manufactured in China, surpassing the United States as the second largest automobile maker, after Japan.
The consultancy McKinsey & Company estimates that China's car market will grow tenfold between 2005 and 2030.[7]
China zoomed past Japan to become the world's No.2 vehicle market in 2006 and passed the United States to be the biggest in 2009.This growth is spurring demand for automotive parts, services, and after-care products.China is presently capable of manufacturing a complete line of automobile products and large automotive enterprises.Major domestic firms include the China First Automobile Group Corp.(FAW),Dongfeng Motor Corp.(DMC) and Shanghai Automotive Industry (Group) Corp.(SAIC).
China had a total of 6322 automotive enterprises by the end of November 2006.The total output value of the automotive sector for the first three quarters of 2006 was US$143 billion.Since 2002,50% of all motor vehicles (cars and trucks) in China had been purchased by individuals. As incomes increase the high annual growth rate of private ownership is expected to accelerate.

Luke purchased an automobile for $5000,and the value of the automobile decrease by 20 percent each year. The value, in dollars, of the automobile n years from the date of purchase is given by the function V, where V(n)=5000*(4/5)^n (五分之四的n次方). How many years from the date of purchase wil the value of the automobile be $3200?
