Neuroimaging investigations of self-processing have generally focused on the neural correlates of explicit
self-reflection.However,very little is known about the neural basis of implicit self-related processes.We
utilized the concept of self-schemas to construct a two-task fMRI study that elicited both implicit and explicit
self-relevant processes.The sample consisted of 18 participants who were schematic for either athletics or
science.In the implicit self-relevance task,individuals made non-self-relevant judgments about affectively
neutral scientific and athletic images.In the explicit self-reference task,participants judged the selfdescriptiveness

(schematic) material elicited activity in many of the same regions,including medial prefrontal cortex,

Investigations were carried out on a new anchorage geometry that involves adhesive bonding of flat cables.Such assemblies can be used for structural bonding applications,either for reinforcing or repairing existing civil engineering structures or in new construction.The first stage of the study was to characterize a variety of adhesives in order to observe their dependency on hydrostatic pressure.An elastoplastic adhesive and two brittle elastic adhesives were studied and,by applying three different test configurations on bulk adhesive,we partially identified the plasticity envelope or the fracture domain for each system.It was found that the hydrostatic pressure has a major influence on the properties of the adhesives and that we should therefore adopt a criterion that takes into account this parameter.The linear Drucker–Prager criterion was presently adopted for subsequent investigations of different bonded joint geometries.The second stage was the mechanical modelling of two types of bonded assembly:the classical lap joint and a new geometry,the curved bonded joint developed as a result of the observations made concerning the dependency of the adhesive on the hydrostatic pressure.After an investigation of the stress fields based on a finite element surface model,the attention turned to a study of the energy release rate of the assemblies.The study of the stress fields showed that joint geometry does not affect shear stress transfer and that there is a considerable increase in compressive
stress at the joint edge.The fracture mechanics study demonstrated that the curved geometry stabilizes crack propagation,which in theory will provide better fatigue performance.The third stage was to verify some theoretical expectations by
conducting experimental investigations of the curved bonded joint.
