Introduction to anger
Anger is a natural reaction which comes out when we feel that we have not been given a fair treatment. The positive side of this negative emotion is that it has helped us to evolve as humans and cope in a better manner with our surroundings. However, it tends to become a problem when we fail to control it. Many a time it happens that your anger has hurt others or has spoiled one of your relationships for which you regret later. It has some bad effects on the health, too.
We should control anger so that it does not cause harm to us or to those around us whom we love. One of the best ways to control anger is to get help from others. If you feel that you are unable to manage your anger, it can make you more upset. So tell someone that is close to you, a friend or a family member, about your problem. When you discuss a matter with others, there is a better chance of finding a solution to your problem. Besides, there are no better stress relievers than humor. When you feel that it is because of stress that your anger is becoming unmanageable, you can use humor. It can help you look at difficult things in a lighter way and you will feel better about the things around you.
Anger tends to make us have a lot of negative thoughts. Therefore, we have to change the negative thoughts into positive ones. For this you have to first refuse all the negative thoughts that are in your mind one by one. This can be done with a lot of practice. Once you are successful in that, you have to maintain your focus only on the positive things of life.
Meditation (冥想) is an excellent anger management technique. In addition, what we do is disconnect ourselves from the outer world and focus all our attention into the inner world. This helps us develop a sense of controlling our thoughts that tend to cause anger.

How important is homework? According to the Los Angeles Unified School District(LAUSD), it’s not that important! The district has made a big change for the 2011-2012 school year. It started on July 1, homework counts for only 10% of a student’s grade. The district, the second largest in the country, says its new way can provide a fairer assessment(评定) of students’ homework and achievements.
The district hopes students only need to spend less time on homework and more time on hobbies and with their families. By reducing the weight of homework toward a student’s grade, a truer picture of the student’s knowledge will be shown in the achievement grade.
However, it doesn’t mean the students can throw out homework. It says that homework is a chance for students to practice their skills and a tool for students to prepare for coming lessons. Still, LAUSD is joining a growing list of schools that have controlled the amount of homework.
How much time children should spend on homework is a hot topic. Harris Cooper, a professor at a university, says that the proper amount of homework time is ten minutes a day multiplied by(乘以) the student’s grade. This means a third grader should spend 30 minutes a day on homework. And a sixth grader would spend 60 minutes. “Good homework in the proper amount will have better effects on them,” he said. “Bad homework or too much homework will have worse effects.”
But some people think homework is an important part of learning. They say many children just won’t try their best if homework doesn’t count toward their grade. Some teachers also think homework is important. They argue that students who do their homework perform better on tests and in school than those who do not. They are afraid that the new way will encourage students to pay less attention to homework.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situation—for example, family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic(the opposite of “temporary”)usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, for example, friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness as heart disease, while temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

背字典的时候,按开头字母(Z,Y,X,Q,J,K,U)(V,W,N,O,L)(FG,IT,HM,BDE,R)(C,P,S,A)的顺序背,其中C,P,S,A每个都要分三部分背.

third-generation mobile phones, known as 3g, are the next big step for the telecom industry. date speed in 3g networks is much quicker than that in present technology. this means users can have high-speed internet access and enjoy video and cd-quality music on their phones. 20
“mobile data is not a dream; it’s not an option but a requirement,” said len lauer, head of a us communications company, sprint pcs, at a 3g conference in bangkok earlier this month.
with3g, you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday’s news; a 3g phone can receive video news programs, updated four times a day. internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the web on your phone than on your computer at home.
face-to-face video calls
don’t worry about getting lost, 3g phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by pressing a few keys on your handset.
however, the most impressive part of 3g technology is video calling. with live two-way video communication, you can have face-to-face talks with friends and family on your mobile phone.
many european countries have already launched the service. in may 2000 the us *** issued five licenses to run 3g wireless services, while the first 3g phones arrived in italy in march this year.
international telecom companies can’t wait to sell 3g in china, the world’s largest mobile telecommunications market. but they will have to be patient. at the moment, china is busy testing its 3g-based technologies, networks and services. this will be followed by a trial period before the phones can finally hit the shops.
“we need to create a pool of 3g customers before the large-scale commercial launch of the service,” said fan yunjun, marketing manager for beijing mobile. “we expect that the 3g licenses will be issued late next year.”

Future and Today
It is well known that everyone has his own dream as well as his own future. But do you know what future really is ? I have to say that future is now. That is to say we must treasure every minute now. If we want to have a bright future, we should know how important time is and use it well.
There is an old English saying: “Gain time, gain life.” Then what’s time? Time is something that we can’t see or touch, but we can feel it passing by. Time is always with us. When we are at table, time passes; when we play, time goes by unnoticeable. We always say “Time is money”, but time is even more precious(珍贵的)than money, because when money is spent , we can earn it back. But if time is gone away, it will never return. So, some of us even say time is priceless(无价的).
We should always remember: future is now. For us students, we should try our best to work hard in order to create a great future of our own. We should make the best use of every hour and be the master of today. We should do everything before us as well as possible. And never put off what can be done today till tomorrow.
As we all know , “Time and tide wait for no man.” If you waste today, you will regret tomorrow. So from now on, work hard. Tomorrow will be better, and your future will be brighter .Remember: “No pains, no gains.” Today’s hard work is the cause of tomorrow’s harvest.

Literature is a term used to describe written as well as spoken material.Generally speaking, it is often used to describe anything from creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama and fiction.
Then why read literature, since it is often imaginary and seems unconnected with real life?
A lot of us read literature for pleasure and relaxation. It’s always pleasant to read some interesting books, such as comedies and novels, in our spare time.In a modern life full of pressure, it is our common desire to read some imaginary works and seek relaxation from the stress in life.
Reading literature is more than fun; it also enables us to acquire knowledge. As a general rule, literature represents a language or a people, and it often gives us an insight(洞察力)into the traditions, customs, beliefs, attitudes and values of the age in which it was written.
Sometimes literature can even offer us new, creative ways to have a better understanding of the world. It helps us make sense of the world around us.It introduces us to new worlds of experiences. We enjoy the comedy and the tragedy of poems, stories and plays; and we may even grow through our literary journey with books.Eventually, we may discover meaning in literature by looking at what the author says and how he/she says it.In a sense, we explore the human condition and analyze how and why people think the way they think and feel the way they feel.Literature enables us to think analytically and promotes open minds. We see the world through the eyes of different cultures and in turn learn the ways to deal with things that happen around.
So we can definitely say literature is of great importance to us.Why not get going with one poem, drama or fiction at once?

Katie Spotz is a 22-year-old girl from America. She wants to cross the Atlantic Ocean by boat. If she succeeds, she’ll be the youngest and the first American to finish the 2500-mile trip. Spotz began sailing when she was at university, but she has never tried to sail such a long way before. It will be a great challenge for her. In recent years, she has swum all the way down the 325-mile Allegheny River and traveled by bike form Seattle to Washington. Spotz knows that she may see some dangerous things during the trip. It will be very dangerous if she meets very bad weather in the middle of the sea. But she believes that she can deal with all the difficulties. “I never thought I could run 26 miles,” she said. “But once I finished it, I realized that maybe I could do something even more difficult.” Spotz wants to collect money by going on this trip. You probably have lists to remember and steps to follow in order to have the best pet-friendly trip. There are, however, a few things that are best left at home. Here are a few things to forget when you’re traveling with pets. Forgetting them will make your trip run more smoothly and more effectively.
Time
Traveling with pets will take longer and will have unexpected turns. In reality, forgetting about time means leaving impatience behind. Don’t be in a rush. Your pets will require more extra stops than you will, and they’ll often surprise you with unpredictable delays. Plan on leaving early and arriving later and you’ll be right on time.
Anger
Getting angry at the delay will only make matters worse. Your feelings can add unnecessary stresses to you and your pets’ travel experience. If you feel yourself becoming out of control, stop and take a deep breath. Your pets have little control over their emotions, bowel movements, or motion sickness when traveling. Remember to be kind and understanding at all times, especially when under pressure.
Work Attitude
This may seem like a no-brainer, but when you are traveling, leave your work attitude behind. Traveling is not a task to be accomplished; it can be an enjoyable and memorable experience for both you and your pets as long as you have the right attitude.
Control
Part of the joy of traveling with pets is dealing with the unexpected. You can’t control everything and trying to do so will only end in frustration (挫败) and anger. Knowing that things will happen beyond your control will bring great relief to you and your pets. Messes happen; accidents happen. Once you accept that, traveling with your pets will be far easier to manage.
Selfishness
Traveling with pets often requires an extreme amount of selflessness. Your pets rely on you to take care of their needs, and sometimes you will need to put their needs before your own. Leave your selfish ambitions behind when traveling with your pets. They need your attention and care more than anything else because of the stresses and strains of traveling.
Traveling with pets can and will be a joy if you remember to leave these five items behind. It can be difficult at times to handle, but the traveling will go well if you can manage to do so.

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greed and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of coworkers. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

As a saying goes, a warm and loving hug to embrace(拥抱) you. Man is a social animal by nature. We all need friends, as they are there for us when we need support, just as we are there for them whenever they need us. Therefore, it is necessary for you to know how to make friends.
The first step is to open yourself up. If you want to make good friends, you should be able to share your thoughts and feelings with other people first. Only when you share something of yourself with others, can you begin making friends. When your friends open a conversation with you, they are usually expecting you to share information in return. That is to say, when you are in a conversation, you’d better express your own thoughts and feelings. If a conversation is one-sided, the person doing all the talking may think the other person is not interested in what he is saying. So, when talking with your friends, be sure that the conversation is a two-way street.
One of the most important keys to building a solid friendship with other people is to listen to them—really listen. When your friends tell you something that happened to them or complain(埋怨) about a situation, they are usually not looking for agreement but just want to be heard. So don’t try to change their mind or solve their problems, just let them know that you are listening to them.
Respecting your friends is also important to keep your relationships healthy and strong. Looking at your friends while they are talking to you is one way to show your respect, as they will feel that what they are saying is important to you.
Unconditional support and encouragement is one of the things which friends have. True friendship means offering a shoulder when they need it, crying with them when they are sad, and laughing with them when they are happy. Only in this way, can the tree of friendship last for a long time.
The (1) ______ of friendship
Friends make your happiness more and your sadness less.
Friends are always ready to (2) ______ you.
(3) _____ to make friends
Open yourself up
Share your (4) ______ and feelings with others.
Always respond when your friends are talking to you.

Don’t try to (6) ______ their mind or solve their problems, just listen.
(7) _____ your friends
Have (8) ____ contact(接触) when talking to a friend.

Health researchers have noticed that some groups of people are more consistently healthy than others, and wondered… Is it race? Income? Where you live? In the United States, these disagreements in health outcomes have been the focus of intense research for the past several decades.
Harvard University health policy researcher Ellen Meara says scholars have found some clues as to why some groups of people have more or less disease than others. She says one important factor in people’s health is the amount of education they have.
In her most recent paper, Meara looked at data from the United states census. These counts of people occur every 10 years. Meara and her colleagues examined data from several decades.
“We looked at life expectancy(预测寿命) at age 25,” Meara says.
“How many additional years can you expect to live if you arrive at age 25 and your education has stopped at high school, or sooner? Versus how many years, can you expect to live if you’ve reached aged 25 and you’ve gone on to at least some college…”
Meara says they found that in 1990, a 25-year-old who only had some secondary school could expect to live for a total of 75 years. In 2000, a 25-year-old with some secondary education could also expect to live to the age of 75.
In contrast, for a better educated 25-year-old, they could expect to live to the age of 80 in 1990. Someone with a similar education level in the year 2000, could expect to live to be more than 81 years, 81.6 years to be exact.
Meara says, not only do better-educated people live longer to begin with, but in the past ten years, more educated people have made gains in the length of their lives. Meanwhile, the life expectancy hasn’t changed for less educated people.
Some of these gains can be explained. Meara says researchers know that people who are more educated are more likely to quit smoking cigarettes, or not start at all, compared to people with less education.
“I think it’s a reminder not to be satisfactory,” Meara says. “Just because a population overall appears to be getting healthier, it doesn’t always mean that those advantages and successes that many people have enjoyed really extend into all parts of the population. And I think that’s something to really pay attention to regardless of whether you live in the US or elsewhere.”
Meara points out that education can often determine income---people with more education frequently make more money. This makes them aware of health care, and purchase other resources and services that can keep them healthier. But the data on income do NOT show that people who make more money are automatically healthier.
Meara says education is key. People need to be educated in order to take advantage of opportunities for better health.

Guiding students through open-ended discussions can help students develop their understanding of the nature of science.
One useful practice in classroom discussions involves developing a discussion map. A discussion map is a graphic timeline created by the teacher on which a discussion is recorded --- who initially states the idea and who adds to or refuses the idea.
Discussion maps let teachers gain a deep understanding of students’ level of participation, the origins of ideas, and the claims that seem meaningful, useful, and/or reasonable to students. They also give the teacher an idea of students’ science thoughts of phenomena and ideas.
To make a discussion map, the teacher needs to do a couple of things. First, the teacher needs to keep informed of the ideas that are shared and who shared the idea. The teacher does this as the children talk, making quick notes of the ideas and thoughts. It can be helpful to record the discussion, but it isn’t required. Then, after the discussion is over, the teacher reflectively creates the discussion map to clarify the understanding of the ideas and connections that students were making in their talk.
Educators have identified discussions as consistent with reform recommendations in that they help children learn about the nature science and are useful in combining literacy and science. It is suggested that discussions can be useful for teachers in evaluating students’ ideas and building excitement as science. Discussions offer windows on students’ thinking, provide students who struggle in reading and writing with a chance to participate more actively in class, and create situations where students can express their ideas differently than in traditional schools tasks.
However, I suggest that there are additional reasons for having reasoned discussions in classrooms. First, discussions like this allow students to use their own vocabulary --- the words and terms that make sense to them and their classmates --- to drive the intellectual and academic work of understand phenomena. Many times learning science can become focused on learning terms but not necessarily understanding and explaining phenomena. Second, discussions allow students to think about their experiences and the things that they know and try to reconcile these with science ideas. This is challenging, but working together with classmates can help. Finally, reasoned discussions are fundamentally scientific because they offer an open forum that allows all students to be heard, and students’ ideas can be evaluated and connected to their experiences with scientific explanations of those phenomena. For example, during the children’s reasoned discussion about plants, the group came to the agreement that seeds grow into plants. The students understood that most seeds get buried in the ground, the seeds get wet, and then plants grow. This led to a question about whether the seed was still in the ground when the plant had grown into an adult plant. The students came up with several ideas about where the seeds were. During this conversation, the teacher took careful notes so that later investigations could respond to the questions that children were asking. Thus the students were working together using their ideas and understandings and realized something as a group that they didn’t understand as individuals.
Discussion maps make sense!

the job of raising children is a tough one. children don’t come with an instruction handbook. and each child is different. so parents sometimes pull their hair out in frustration, not knowing what to do. but in raising children---as in all of life---what we do is influenced by our culture. naturally then, american parents teach their children basic american values.
to americans, the goal of parents is to help children stand on their own two feet. from infancy, each child may get his or her own room. as children grow, they gain more *** to make their own choices. teenagers choose their own forms of entertainment, as well as the friends to share them with. when they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careers and marriage partners. of course, many young adults still seek their parents’ advice and approval for the choices they make. but once they "leave the nest" at around 18 to 21 years old, they want to be on their own, not "tied to their mother’s apron strings."
the relationship between parents and children in america is very informal. american parents try to treat their children as individuals ─ not as extensions of themselves. they allow them to fulfill their own dreams. americans praise and encourage their children to give them the confidence to succeed. when children become adults, their relationship with their parents becomes more like a friendship among equals. but contrary to popular belief, most adult americans don’t make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit. even as adults, they respect and honor their parents.
most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare. mothers have traditionally stayed home with their children. in recent years, though, a growing trend is to put preschoolers in a day care center so mom can work. many americans have strong feelings about which type of arrangement is best. some argue that attending a day care center can be a positive experience for children. others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children. a number of women are now leaving the workforce to become full-time homemakers.
disciplining children is another area that american parents have different opinions about. many parents feel that an old-fashioned spanking(一顿打) helps youngsters learn what "no!" means. others prefer alternate forms of discipline. for example, "time outs" have become popular in recent years. children in "time out" have to sit in a corner or by a wall. they can get up only when they are ready to act nicely. older children and teenagers who break the rules may be grounded, or not allowed to go out with friends. some of their privileges at home like tv or telephone use may also be taken away for a while. although discipline isn’t fun for parents or children, it’s a necessary part of training.
being a parent is a tall order. it takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense of humor to raise children. some people are just deciding not to have children at all, since they’re not sure it’s worth it. but raising children means training the next generation and preserving our culture. what could be worth more than that?

The ups and downs of life may seem to have no predictable plan. But scientists know there are very definite patterns that almost all people share. Even if you’ve passed some of your “prime”, you still have other prime years to experience in the future. Certain important primes seem to peak later in life. It is really good news to many of us who don’t have a good feeling about ourselves now. We needn’t be worried about it now. When are you smartest? From 18-25, according to IQ scores; but you’re wiser and more experienced with increasing age.
You’re sharpest in your 20’s; around 30, memory begins to decline. But your IQ for other tasks climbs. Your vocabulary at the age of 45, for example, is three times as great as when you graduated from college. At the age of 60, your brain possesses almost four times as much information as it did at the age of 21. It is really amazing, but it is true.
When are you happiest? You have the best physical sense of yourself from 15 to 24; the best professional sense from 40 to 49.
Before age 24, we believe that our happiest years are yet to come; over 30, we believe that they’re behind us.
When are you most creative? Generally between 30 and 39, but the peak varies with different professions.
Mozart wrote a symphony and four sonatas by age eight, and Mendelssohn composed his best known work A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at 17, but most of the great music was written by men between 33 and 39.
Though the peak in most fields comes early-most Nobel prizewinners did their top research in their late 20’s and 30’s — creative people continue to produce quality work throughout their lives. For the “well-conditional mind”, there is no upper limit.
So if you are not very successful at present, it really doesn’t matter. Just have a little patience and wait for your best time.

The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850-1928). After immigrating from England to the USA, and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed “the Garden City”, almost certainly the source of Howard’s name for his later building plan of towns. Returning to London, Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on ideas that were popular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs.
The nineteenth-century poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression(萧条) and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard’s idea was to combine the best of town and country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city. Howard’s idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside; far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.
Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, also owned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit-Howard suggested 32,000 people; then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide rang of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.
