"The Killers" isa short story by Ernest Hemingway. Itu2019s just an attempted murderstory. The story took place in a suburb of Chicago, called Summit, during the1920s, during Prohibition. Two men, Max and Al, walked into Henry"s lunchroom,which was run by George. They ordered something that was not available untilsix ou2019clock and they seemed have nopatience. They were quite strange that they ate with their gloves on and theykept their eyes on the mirror behind the bar. After talking with George, thetwo men told George to ask everyone come out. Then Al went into the kitchen andtied up Nick Adams, a recurring character in Hemingway"s stories, and Sam, theblack cook. Max and George soon had a conversation, which revealed that the twomen were there to kill Ole Andreson, a Swedish boxer, for a "friend".However, Andreson didnu2019t show up. At ten minutes past seven, the two killersthought that Andreson wouldnu2019t come at that day. so the two killers leftwithout killing anyone. George sent Nick to Hirsch"s boarding house, run byMrs. Bell, to warn Andreson about the two killers. Nick found Andreson lying inhis bed with all of his clothes on. He told Andreson what had happened. Itseemed that Andreson had known everything, he did not take any action. He exceptedto tell Nick not to do anything, as there was nothing that can be done. Nick left,went back to the lunchroom, and informed George about Ole Andreson"s reaction.In the end, Nick decided to get out of this town.

Works of Ernest Hemingway initiated minimalist movement in American fiction and had an enormous influence on the work of Raymond Carver and other minimalist authors. Comparing the style of Ernest Hemingway"s “The Killers” and Raymond Carver"s “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”, one can notice numerous similarities. The first one can be seen in the description of the setting. Ernest Hemingway writes:Outside it was getting dark. The street-light came on outside the window. The two men at the counter read the menu. From the other end of the counter Nick Adams watched them. He had been talking to George when they came in. While they wait, another man comes in, and upon hearing that Sam is not there to cook, he abruptly leaves.After five minutes have passed, Max suggests to Al that it is time to leave. Al wonders what they should do with George, Nick and Sam. Max tries to assure him that they do not need to harm them; Al is not totally convinced as he thinks Max as told them too much.Even so, the two men leave the lunchroom. George agrees that this is probably a wise thing for Nick to do.Sentences are short and simple. They are often joined by coordinate conjunction “and”, which is a characteristic of paratactic style. Neither Hamingway nor Carvver explain relation or connection between sentences. Lack of subordinate sentences gives effect of clarity and directness.
