《觉醒》（The Awakening），凯特．萧邦Kate Chopin 选这本书的原因，不外乎是因为这本书的主题吸引著我。自从看的十九号房之后，这样类似的主题便十分吸引我。而开头用的是女主角艾德娜在三十六章最后对劳伯特说的话。 对艾德娜来说，艾伯特这个脚色的存在十分重要，原因无它──因为他正是那个敲醒艾德娜沉睡灵魂的人，但也是使艾德娜意识到「社会束缚」与「残酷现实」的人──他在最后一刻临阵脱逃，选择遭受传统的社会价值所束缚。尽管如此，尽管劳伯特始终是个甩不开社会舆论的男人，他的存在依然重要，因为没有他，便没有后来蜕变的艾德娜。 书中一开始的那只鹦鹉，那只被养在鸟笼中的鹦鹉，同时也象徵著，一直以来艾德娜就如那只鹦鹉一样，被当作是名为「庞特里耶太太」的商品所豢养著。或许我的用字可能过于强烈，但是个人认为过去那个沉睡在噩梦里的艾德娜，那个和其他人无异，所知道的只有相夫教子的她，用这个字眼最为合适不过，因此我的开头才会引用她对劳伯特所说的话。 虽然艾德娜对劳伯特说，是他将她唤醒的，而这点也没错，但是个人有另外的见解。在第二章时，一开头描写艾德娜的外表，以及她有时会「突然盯著某样东西看很久，思绪好像落入了迷宫」，就著这句，我个人的看法是，其实她从小就有意识到某种东西（我的看法是，那是一种女性的自觉），只是她本身不晓得那是什麽，而且在某种程度上，她的潜意识中以及外界给予她的感觉是：不可以知道那是什麽，因为那样的东西是不被允许的。再加上从小接受的教育也不过就是「一般对女性的教导」，教导她们要遵循先生的意见，并且要当个称职的好太太及好妈妈，说难听点就是「学会如何将自己的先生及小孩当成偶像来崇拜」，而这种「崇拜」多半是盲目的，因为「大家」都这麽做，就如艾德娜的朋友爱黛儿一样。因此当她去与爱黛儿及其丈夫一同共进晚餐后，看到他们这样所谓「甜蜜的家庭」，她并没有感到遗憾或渴望，甚至为爱黛儿感到可怜，同情她过著这般无色彩的生活，甚至终其一生都未曾感受到艾德娜感受到、意识到并且了解的东西，爱黛儿的生活就如一般人一样，幸福美满而平淡──毫无起伏的人生。也正如文中叙述的： 她的灵魂只有无知的满足，从来没有受过一分钟的痛苦，也没有嚐过一分钟人生的狂喜。 也正因为艾德娜从小内潜意识内就有那样的种子，那就是她小时候曾企图穿越比她腰际更高的大草原。或许对今日的我们来说，这样的举动不算什麽，但是对于当时的女性来说，应当是很奇怪的。传统赋予女性的特徵不外乎「端庄」、「典雅」、「守妇德」或者「矜持」等等，对于那些会做出奇异（或者对他们来说是怪异）举动的女子，只会感到她可能突然生病了，心灵上可能出了什麽问题，再不然就是说她「很任性」、「奇怪」等等。在第七章有叙述到更年轻时的艾德娜： 在众人面前，她会一面让大家传阅相片，直说照得有多像，一面夸奖他崇高的天赋；而独处时，有时候便会捧起相片，热情的亲吻那冰冷的玻璃。 由此可知，艾德娜从小就有与其他女性不同的点，她不是那种传统叙述的「端庄典雅而矜持」的女性，在她的内心曾有过热情，而这样的热情大概被当时的大人视为「不好的」特质。或许没有人跟她这样说，因为大家都是那样彰显的，自然而无做作的，几近内化的一种习惯，于是年纪小小的她便懂得要尘封这样的特质。因此小说中才会如此叙述：「一旦身为先生崇拜的贤妻，她觉得自己或许可以在现实生活中站个尊严的地位，于是她便将那扇通往罗曼史的梦幻之门永远关上了。」而这扇被她关上的大门，甚至是渐渐遭她遗忘的大门，在她待在格蓝岛的那年夏天，被与劳伯特的邂逅所打开。 但是打开的过程是缓慢的，且带著犹豫迟疑。 她打开那扇门的过程中，她时常会感受到一股莫名未知的情绪涌上心头，使她困惑感伤不已，甚至在某个夜里痛哭了一场。痛哭的原因自己也不知道，那天遇到的本应是被她视之为「理所当然」的事情，可她却为此大哭了一场，连她自己都不知道为什麽哭。我对这段的解读是，那场大哭并非出自于有意识的，而是她的潜意识已经先感知到了过去未曾感知的东西，而那样东西带来的冲击且过大的情绪，使她某部分感知到了，也因此哭了。我觉得那是种灵魂的哭泣，对于遭受的对待以及受到束缚而感到哀伤却不自知。 一直以来艾德娜都是十分顺从的好太太，当然也不能称得上是社会口中的好妈妈，毕竟那一切其实与她的本质是完全不符合的形象。她原本应该是一个十分向往自由的女性，但是受到社会的框架所局限，使她不得不一直过著所谓「束缚的上流生活」。小说中一直出现的字眼，便是「音乐晚会」。文中叙述道：「这种音乐晚会庞先生是不参加的，他认为它们代表中产阶级的普遍习气。」这也在在的表示，在打开那扇门的过程中，艾德娜开始会做那些过去自己不会做的事情，而过去不过做的原因，大概多半原因是因为丈夫的关系，因为妻子应该要「顺从」丈夫才对。 而艾德娜真正受到冲击的点，应该是在海边那段。好像自己的灵魂多了一种意义非凡的力量，她变得更大胆、更狂妄，不免高估了自己的能力；她要远远的游出去，游到别的女人从来不曾游过的地方！ 当她游到了一般女性不会游到的地方时，也代表她的眼界开阔了，她能感受到更多一般女性感受不到的东西，体会并咀嚼，然后消化。在此之后，艾德娜对于海的向往变得更加明显，甚至她最后也选择「海」，作为她了结生命的所在地。 在离开格蓝岛后，艾德娜迥异的行为越发明显，她越来越大胆，越来越敢做出大不曾做过的事情。她任由自己被感觉引导，顺著自己的感觉去做想做的事情，像是她在星期二出门，在这一天「原本」应是来接待客人的时间出门，甚至没有交代「合理的藉口」。她的丈夫一听到的反应，就跟一般人一样，说她多糟糕，多不负责任，责备她应该要遵守「社会规范」，接著如一般的大男人一样，嫌弃晚餐多难吃，找藉口出门。 这一天的艾德娜十分不一样，不同过去的她会因此感到难过，她反而从容的吃完晚餐。过去的她会因此感到懊恼，并且企图在隔天弄出更好吃的菜单，甚至花大半时间在研究食谱，就为了让丈夫感到开心。这是因为过去的她就如当时的传统女性，生活的中心一直都是围绕的家庭转动：小的时候是绕著父亲转动，长大了嫁人了，围绕著丈夫转动，而丈夫去世后，则围绕著孩子转动──一生没有自我，没有自己。女人在传统社会的价值观底下，彷佛是一件商品，从小到大所受的教育，便是如何服从男人，服从家庭，长大之后藉著「婚姻」的名义，被当成是「某某太太」的商品贩售出去，从头到尾没有自我意识，而男人们也习惯了这样的情况。对于习惯没有自我意识的太太的丈夫们，突然遭受到自己的太太性格大变，口中说著「女人与生俱来的权利」之类的话，庞先生的反应非常的普通，大概就是认为艾德娜是不是生病之类的，而生病自然就要去寻找医生的意见。在庞先生寻求医生的意见那段，其中我注意到一句话，那就是： 婚礼是世界上最可悲的场面之一。 这句话是艾德娜对庞先生说的。 这在在的代表著，艾德娜渐渐感受到「婚姻」之于她，除了束缚，还是束缚，没有更多了。而在之后的晚宴中，医生也感受到了艾德娜的改变：她不再是以前认识的那个无精打采的女主人，眼前的她正悸动著生命的活力，讲起话来又热切又有精神，举手投足之间，完全没有压抑之气，她让他联想到刚在太阳下甦醒过来的一支美丽而光滑的动物。 是的，艾德娜是醒过来了。她开始意识到「自己」本身，并且开始学著将自己摆于自己生活的中心，而不是别人。而她也开始意识到这社会的加值官对她的束缚，并且企图打破那个困住她的无形的笼子。但是就如书中的音乐家芮芝对她说的：「想要飞越传统和偏见的鸟儿得要有强壮的翅膀，小东西伤痕累累、精疲力竭的调回地面的景象真悲惨。」就在芮芝这麽对她说的这晚，她遵从了自己的欲望，接著那扇一直关著的大门彻底的被打开了。 那种莫名的情绪，以及未知的世界，如今清清楚楚地显现在她眼前，让她了解到梦想与现实，了解到这个世界是由「美与残忍」所组成，多麽讽刺！但是她同时也了解到，比起一直处于梦中，一直被关在那扇门外，而是从梦醒来，或者看到门后的世界，其实是更好的。 因此在被劳伯特临阵脱逃的打击之后，艾德娜没有选择重回家庭，继续为了孩子而生，而是选择死亡。 对于一个已经知晓这世界真正面纱的她，甚至已经知道什麽叫做「自由」的艾德娜，怎麽会愿意再回到社会的束缚。再者，对于这样被视为「离经叛道」的她，社会怎麽可能完全接受？ 艾德娜最后脱去了所有的衣裳，那些我们所谓的「外在物质」，任凭自己光著身躯，任由海风、阳光与浪潮的摆布。这在在象徵著艾德娜终于摆脱社会加诸于她的种种意象，无论是庞特里耶先生的太太、两个孩子的母亲或厄略宾的情妇，所有不属她本身的角色以及外在束缚，通通被她丢弃了。 艾德娜最后选择了自己，而不是别人──她没有对那些束缚她的传统社会屈服，实实在在的忠于自己的感受、自己的灵魂。
