在白人探矿者到来之前，至少有 2000 吨自然铜被开采。这些铜被制成小刀、箭头、斧子、鱼钩等工具，项圈、手镯等装饰品、日常用品和武器，成为古印第安人生产、生活必需品。古印第安人穿戴的铜项圈、手镯激发了白人探矿者的兴趣。他们知道印底安人发现有自然铜散布于地表，但尚未采矿。尽管法国探矿者在 17 世纪初就从印第安人那里知道存在铜矿床，但直到 18 世纪晚期仍无法开展采矿活动。第一个铜矿山于 1771 年正式成立，其业主亚利桑德·亨利( Alexander Henry) 将“安纳托冈巨块”( OntonagonBoulder) 自然铜送至底特律，以证明半岛的富有。1841 年密歇根州第一位地质学家道格拉斯 . 休顿( Douglass Houghton) 发表了描述 Keweenaw 半岛有铜矿的报告。这些均刺激成千上万的人们开始于 1843 ～1846 年间从美国东部西移至这个地方，掀起了比更著名的加利福尼亚找金热还早数年的找铜热。自那时起，采铜在 Keweenaw 半岛地区持续了 150 年。采矿始于 1844 年，而真正获利的开采从 1845 年开始。有的矿硐垂深可达 1 英里，斜深超过 9000 英尺。1857 年 3 月 7 日，在明尼苏达( Minesota) 矿山发现了最大的铜块，其重愈 500 吨、长 14m、宽 5. 6m、厚约 2. 5m。矿石较纯，易于分离，用简单的捣矿即可选出精铜。1847 ～ 1887 年间，密歇根州是全美产铜最大的州，随着铜产量的增长，北半岛尤其是Kew eenaw 半岛的人口也随之增多，逐渐形成休顿( Houghton) 、赫可拉( Hecla) 和卡鲁梅特( Calumet) 等矿业城镇。随着物价的上涨和其他更易开采铜矿的发现，迫使较小的矿业公司关闭或合并，到1936 年，甚至使两家余下的矿业巨头卡鲁梅特( Calumet) 和赫可拉( Hecla) 公司合并，而铜岭公司也举步维艰。目前，在 Keweenaw 半岛，基本已无采铜业，所有的矿坑多已关闭，包括怀特潘( WhitePine) 也于 1999 年闭坑。人们已将古采坑、矿硐、选矿场、自然铜标本、地质和自然风光结合在一起，开始发展旅游业。( 二) 矿床产出的地质背景Kew eenaw 半岛属加拿大地盾南延部分，其地壳厚 40 ～ 50km。苏必利尔湖盆地的基底由广泛变形、变质的太古代和早元古代绿岩、花岗片麻岩、石英岩和云母片岩等组成，并有 Peno-kean 造山期( 约 1850Ma) 的花岗岩侵入。盆地属陆内裂谷性质，形成于中元古代( 1225 ～1100Ma) ，由玄武岩和相伴的辉长岩及少许流纹岩和沉积碎屑岩组成。由地震、重力和航磁等资料看，裂谷宽 100km，从苏必利尔湖向南西方向可延至堪萨斯。盆地的南、北均以陡倾的逆断层为界，说明为大陆裂谷的一部分。区内出露的中、晚元古代地层称 Keweenaw 群，自上而下由 Jacobsville 砂岩、Freda 砂岩、Nonesuch 页岩、Copper Harbor 砾岩和 Portage 湖火山岩组成。各单元的特征为:Jacobsville 砂岩: 厚逾 1000m，由晚元古代长石砂岩、粉砂岩和红褐色砾岩组成。Freda 砂岩: 厚逾 3600m，由河流相红层砂岩、页岩( 淡红色细粉长石砂岩、粉砂岩和云母粉砂质页岩的交互层) 组成。Nonesuch 页岩: 厚 40 ～ 220m，由灰色、灰褐色、页黑色、粉砂岩页岩和砂岩组成。为潟湖相沉积，含有细粒浸染状的黄铁矿和少许 Cu 的硫化物。在该组下部 30 米范围内主要为灰-暗灰色粉砂岩。怀特潘( White Pine) 铜矿床和 Preque 岛地区的含铜矿层位于本层底部约 6 ～18m 的范围内。矿石主要由辉铜矿等硫化铜和少许自然铜组成。Copper Harbor 砾岩: 厚 100 ～ 1800m，属冲积扇红层。由浅红-褐色、浅灰-褐色细粒砂岩、砾岩及少许淡红褐色粉砂岩组成，局部夹基性熔岩流。在大部分地方，该组地层正位于Portage 湖熔岩系的基性熔岩流之上，但在有些地方，其位于约 600 ～ 900m 厚的流纹岩之上。砾石成分主要为流纹岩、长英质砂岩，其次为基性火山岩。Portage 湖火山岩: 厚逾 9000m，以溢流玄武岩流为主，同时见流纹岩流和熔结凝灰岩质的流纹岩流。熔岩往往发育多边形裂隙。在熔岩流之间发育厚 3cm ～ n ×10m 的砾岩和砂岩层，而且往上，砾岩和砂岩增加，砾石成分以玄武岩为主。该层总体含 200 多层熔岩流和20 余层层间砾岩。岩层走向北东，倾向北西，在地表熔岩流可出露长逾 65km，为 Kew eenaw自然铜矿床的赋矿层位。岩石变质作用为埋藏变质作用。区内岩浆活动有流纹岩、岩墙、岩床状侵入体和石英斑岩等。Kew eenaw 群的区域地质发展可以归纳为 4 个阶段: ①地壳裂开，深部岩浆沿断裂上涌; ②地壳大部因地壳拉张、变薄或者因厚达 12km 的熔岩流自重下陷，形成地堑; ③地壳继续拉张，火山活动结束，沉积作用开始: ④东西向的挤压使地堑及其中的熔岩和沉积物褶皱形成向斜。同时，向斜两翼出现逆断层，砂、砾石继续在苏必利尔湖向斜内沉积。( 三) 区域矿床类型该区矿床类型有四种: 一是产于 Portage 湖火山岩系玄武岩中的自然铜矿床，为层控型;二是产于 Nonesuch 页岩组砂页岩中的硫化铜 + 自然铜矿床，为层状矿床，如怀特潘铜矿床( 矿石吨位 560Mt，品位 1. 2% ) ; 三是产于 Duluth 侵入杂岩体中的铜镍矿床; 四是产于玄武岩中的辉铜矿矿床。Duluth 侵入杂岩体侵入于 Kew eenaw 群中，由橄长岩、辉长岩和花岗岩等组成，其中橄长岩一辉长岩杂岩体有 4 种岩浆矿化: ①大规模、低品位浸染状 Ni-Cu 矿化，其中局部富集铂族元素; ②局部高品位块状 Ni-Cu 硫化物矿化，局部富集铂族元素; ③与特定类型相界过渡带相关的层控铂族元素富集层; ④含 V、Ti 的富氧化物超铁镁质岩。第一类和第二类矿化只出现于杂岩体接触带底部或附近。玄武岩中的辉铜矿矿床品位高、规模小，出露于 Keweenaw 半岛东端 Portage Lake 火山岩段底部，矿带长 13km，宽 2km，总矿石量约 700 万吨，平均品位 2. 3% Cu。其中最大的543S 矿床有可采储量约 110 万吨，平均品位 4% Cu。铜矿化产于角砾状和杏仁状玄武岩熔岩流顶部，矿石主要由辉铜矿和极少量的自然铜组成，呈脉状产于玄武岩和安山岩岩墙的裂隙中。( 四) 玄武岩中自然铜矿床的特征1. 蚀变矿物分带Kew eenaw 湖火山岩中显示有明显的蚀变矿物的垂直分带，体现为杏仁岩和脉状充填物以及全岩交代作用。蚀变矿物集合体分别与绿帘石带( 形成温度 > 280℃) 、绿纤石带( 210 ～ 280℃ ) 和浊沸石带( 210℃ ) 相关。未见阳起石，说明岩石变质未达绿片岩相。有关玄武岩的研究表明，铜和其他金属是自绿帘石带中淋滤出来，经搬运至较高构造部位，并在绿纤石带中沉淀。2. 矿体特征铜矿体产于 Portage 火山岩系玄武岩熔岩流顶部角砾岩或熔岩流层间砾岩中，矿层长可达 7km，主要有 13 个矿层。已知主要铜矿床的特征见表9-2。其中各矿床中含 Ag 25 ～100g / t。主要类型矿体特征为:( 1) 杏仁状矿体: 全区产铜量约 58% 来自这类矿体。矿体产于玄武岩熔岩流，尤其是熔岩流顶部角砾岩、杏仁状玄武岩中。杏仁体的大小和丰度向下降低，因而熔岩流中部呈块状，很少矿化。熔岩流顶部玄武岩粒度很细，因含细粒赤铁矿，其颜色呈暗紫色。当主岩被次生矿物交代，剔除大量赤铁矿后，岩石变为黄绿色。在上盘接触带附近矿石品位较高，其原因在于接触带渗透性较高以及与下状熔岩流的截然接触，易于成为含矿流体的运移通道。表9-2 Keweenaw 半岛玄武岩中主要自然铜矿床规模及主岩( 2) 砾岩型矿体: 全区铜产量约有 40% 采自此类矿体。矿体产于熔岩流之间的砾岩中。当砾岩层较薄时，整个砾岩层可被矿化; 当砾岩层较厚时，铜矿化集中于一个或多个顺层砾岩透镜体中，当粒度减小，沉积物变为砂岩时，尽管会有少许矿化砂岩存在，但铜品位一般会降低。自然铜和其他蚀变矿物产于碎屑之间的基质中。在高品位地段，铜可完全交代基质，使长英质火山碎屑为自然铜胶结物所包围。( 3) 裂隙型矿体: 除上述两类矿体外，尚有少量铜矿体沿高角度切穿层理的裂隙呈脉状产出。这些矿体可含达数吨的自然铜块体，但矿床规模有限。铜矿石的矿物组合为自然铜、自然银、钾长石、绿泥石、方解石、绿帘石、石英、葡萄石、皂石、绿纤石、浊沸石等。3. 成矿控制因素( 1) 蚀变: 据研究，铜起初存在于 Fe-Ti 氯化物中，后在玄武岩发生埋深变质时经氧化( 磁铁矿氧化为赤铁矿) 时析出，形成富铜贫硫的含矿流体。流体来自裂谷中央部位的 Port-age 湖火山岩系的脱水作用，而被圈闭集中于含矿层中。( 2) 渗透性: 矿床主要就位于可渗透的熔岩顶部角砾岩和熔岩流层间砾岩中，说明岩石的渗透性对成矿起重要作用。渗透通道主要由网络状的断层-裂隙系统和熔岩流顶部的角砾状组成复式泵吸系统，从而促使含矿流体朝上运移。( 3) 构造: 构造的作用也主要体现在渗透性方面。断层、破碎带、裂隙带是主要的流体运移通道，往往赋有大量自然铜富矿体。( 4) 古地理: 有证据表明，有些砾岩型矿体的分布与古河道有关。4. 成矿机制Kew eenaw 自然铜矿床的形成时间估计约为 1060Ma( Bornhorst 等，1988，1992) ，这与裂谷晚期挤压相关的断层作用时间相一致。一般认为，自然铜矿床中铜等成矿物质来自巨厚的 Portage 湖火山岩系;
