Yes,I do believe that the casual gathering will improve people's social life.This is a chance to meet people around you,to know more poeple come from difference back ground,and it is a chance to understand different types of people too.
It may give you happiness if you able to get along well with the people and did enjoy the gathering,you will get to know some new frends who maybe will be the important one in your life.You will widen your knowledge and train youself to be more socialable.
It may be hurtful if you cannot deal with different relationship between people.If you involve in some affair and don't know how to get away from it,you will get yourself into trouble and regret for sometime.
