　　后宫里有很多从民间选来的宫女,整天被关在皇宫里,很想出宫,但却不愿意嫁到匈奴去.管事的大臣很着急.这时,有一个宫女毅然表示愿意去匈奴和亲.她名叫王嫱（qiáng）,又叫昭君,长得十分美丽,又很有见识.管事的大臣听到王昭君肯去,急忙上报元帝.元帝就吩咐大臣选择吉日,让呼韩邪和昭君在长安成了亲.单于得到了这样年轻美丽的妻子,又高兴又激动.临回匈奴前,王昭君向汉元帝告别的时候,汉元帝看到她又美丽又端庄,可爱极了,很想将她留下,但已经晚了.
　　据说元帝回宫后,越想越懊恼,自己后宫有这样的美女,怎么会没发现呢?他叫人从宫女的画像中再拿出昭君的像来看,才知道画像上的昭君远不如本人可爱.为什么会画成这样呢?原来宫女进宫时,一般都不是由皇帝直接挑选,而是由画工画了像,送给皇帝看,来决定是否入选.当时的画工给宫女画像,宫女们要送给他礼物,这样他就会把人画得很美.王昭君对这种贪污勒索的行为不满意,不愿送礼物,所以画工就没把王昭君的美貌如实地画出来.为此,元帝极为恼怒,惩办了画工.王昭君在汉朝和匈奴官员的护送下,骑着马,离开了长安.她冒着塞外刺骨的寒风,千里迢迢地来到匈奴地域,做了呼韩邪单于的妻子.
　　昭君慢慢地习惯了匈奴的生活,和匈奴人相处得很好.她一面劝单于不要打仗,一面把中原的文化传给匈奴,使匈奴和汉朝和睦相处了60年.昭君死后葬在匈奴人控制的大青山,匈奴人民为她修了坟墓,并奉为神仙.
