Dear Abby,
How are you? Today I’ve got a wonderful news to tell you.
I have offered a scholarship at a university in Australia for my
further education. One hundred and twenty students took exam
for it ,but only a few was chosen and I was one of them. However,
my parents are not happy about it. They are strong against me
going there. They say it is too far away that they will not see me
for a whole year and they are afraid of I will feel lonely. They
can’t imagine a girl so young live alone. They advise me to study
in the capital instead. Then I’ll be able to continue living without
them. How can I persuade them to accept the fact I have grown up?
Best wishes.
Yours,
John

Dear Abby,
I am a very conservative woman. I don’t drink, dance, wear makeups or pants. I enjoy the company of friends despite(尽管)our differences and thought they enjoyed mine.
On our most recent outing, however, they laughed at my religious jewelry, commented on my “lack of fashion,” and made me feel guilty for not wanting to stay out late.
Despite this, they are great friends and would help me at the drop of a hat. I don’t bring up their being overweight, or that I think some of the clothes they wear are ugly. I don’t criticize them for sleeping around. I wish they would accept me for who I am.
I am considering not going out with them the next time they ask, but I don’t really want it to come to that. Any suggestions?

Dear Old-Fashioned Girl,
Just this: It’s time for you to start cultivating relationships with people whose values are more like your own. The friends you have described may be lovely, but their comments were out of line and folks are known by the company they keep. If you spend a lot of time with the women you have described, people will begin to make assumptions(臆断) about you.

第二节读写任务 (共1小题,满分25分)
阅读下面的一封信,然后按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的回信。
Dear Abby,
Last month my son was told that he no longer has to attend weekend classes at his school. Since then he spends his weekends going out with his friends to play sports or watch movies. When he is at home all he seems to do is surf the Internet or play silly computer games. I really think he is just wasting his time having fun when he should be studying. I sometimes ask him if he has homework or extra study to do, but he always says that he has already completed it all. This change makes me very worried. I feel that this free time is encouraging him to be lazy. He isn’t studying long enough and this will reduce his chances of getting into university. I also think it will cause problems when he begins to work because he will not be able to concentrate well and will think more of having fun than his job. I have considered going to the school principal and asking him to change their decision but my son says if I do so his classmates will laugh at him. I don’t want to embarrass my child but I don’t want him to fall behind either.
Please help.
