1857年为佐治亚州萨瓦纳的平安夜祈祷所谱写的Jingle Bells被认为是一首经典之作.孩子们被这首歌的优美旋律所深深吸引并强烈要求再次演奏,并且变成一种习俗流传下来.这首曲子的五线谱由奥利弗·迪特生于1857年第一次出版,标题为最初的“我们乘在雪橇上”——The One Horse Open Sleigh.但两年后该五线谱再版时,标题已经变成了言简意赅且广受欢迎的"Jingle Bells"——铃儿响叮当.
1822年,詹姆斯·L·皮尔彭特出生在马萨诸塞州的一个忠诚的废奴主义家庭中.在19世纪50年代他去了佐治亚州萨瓦纳与在那里管理当地的三位一体会的父亲约翰团聚.在那儿他担任了管风琴演奏和教堂音乐总监的职务.在1857年的秋天,他在美国南部开始为新英格兰的圣诞节活动创作歌曲,在他的歌曲中融合了雪景与浓郁的新英格兰风格,因而受到好评.
