Wuthering Heights

Summary
Perhaps the most enduring and affecting of the Bront?sisters' work is Wuthering Heights. Emily Bront?s tale of heartbreak and mystery still resonates on an emotional level with its theme of doomed romance. It was written between October 1845 and June 1846, appearing in print finally in December 1847. Emily's sister Charlotte spoke of the "horror of great darkness" surrounding the novel in her memoirs and it only received recognition after Emily's death from consumption in 1848. Much of the first half of the novel concerns the passionate and illicit relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Mr Heathcliff as narrated by a number of individuals: primarily by Mr Lockwood and Nelly Dean, the housekeeper of Thrushcross Grange. There is intrigue concerning Heathcliff who has taken over the Grange and keeps a clumsy boy called Hareton Earnshaw. We learn of how his morose and stern attitude began and the cruel twists of fate which have torn two families apart. The death of Catherine and the true intentions of the novel's various mysterious characters have been the source of much speculation and even now Wuthering Heights remains genuinely harrowing and cathartic.
下面是作者简介:
Emily Bronte (1818-1848) is perhaps the greatest writer of the three Bront sisters - Charlotte Bronte, Emily, and Anne Bronte. Emily Bronte published only one novel, Wuthering Heights (1847), a story of doomed love and revenge. But that single work has its place among the masterpieces of English literature. Some of her best lyrics are also rated with the best in English poetry.
Emily Brontë was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England. Her father was the rector of Hawort from 1820. After their mother died in 1821, the children spent most of their time in reading and composition. To escape their unhappy childhood, Anne, Emily, Charlotte and their brother Branwell created imaginary worlds - perhaps inspired by Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726). Emily and Anne created their own Gondal saga, and Bramwell and Charlotte recorded their stories about the kingdom of Angria in minute notebooks. Between the years 1824 and 1825 Emily attended the school at Cowan Bridge with Charlotte, and then was largely educated at home. Her father's bookshelf offered a variety of reading: the Bible, Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, Scott and many others. The children also read enthusiastically articles on current affairs and intellectual disputes in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Fraser's Magazine, and Edinburgh Review.
In 1835 Emily Brontë was at Roe Head, but suffered from homesickness and returned after a few months to the moorland scenery of home. In 1837 she became a governess at Law Hill, near Halifax, where she spent six months. To facilitate their plan to keep school for girls, Emily and Charlotte Brontë went in 1842 to Brussels to learn foreign languages and school management. Emily returned on the same year to Haworth, where she stayed for the rest of her brief life.
Unlike Charlotte, Emily had no close friends. She wrote a few letters and was interested in mysticism. Her first novel, Wuthering Heights (1847), a story-within-a-story, did not gain immediate success as Charlotte's Jane Eyre, but it has acclaimed later fame as one of the most intense novels written in the English language. In contrast to Charlotte and Anne, whose novels take the form of autobiographies written by authoritative and reliable narrators, Emily introduced an unreliable narrator, Lockwood. He constantly misinterprets the reactions and interactions of the inhabitants of Wuthering Heights. More reliable is Nelly Dean, his housekeeper, who has lived for two generations with the novel's two principal families, the Earnshaws and the Lintons.
Emily Brontë died of tuberculosis in the late 1848. She had caught cold at her brother Branwell's funeral in September. After the appearance of Wuthering Heighs, some skeptics maintained that the book was written by Branwell, on the grounds that no woman from such circumscribed life, could have written such passionate story. In 1848 Charlotte and Anne visited George Smith to reveal their identity and to help quell rumors that a single author lay behind the pseudonyms. After her sisters' deaths, Charlotte edited a second edition of their novels, with prefatory commentary aimed at correcting what she saw as the reviewers' misunderstanding of Wuthering Heights. The complex time scheme of the novel had been taken as evidence by the critics, that Emily had not achieved full formal control over her narrative materials. However, her model in layering narrative within narrative may have been Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818). Emily's refusal to reduce ambiguity to simplistic clarity did not have any immediate influence on the novel form until Wilkie Collins experimented with multivocal first-person narratives in such works as The Woman in White (1860) and The Moonstone (1868).

Wuthering Heights is the work of Emily Bronte who is one of the Grate Britain's female writers Bronte sisters. The novel is about a Gypsy foundling named Heathcliff. After being adopted by the old owner of Wuthering Heights,he suffered humilation and experienced a painful love.Because of that,he left the house for the pursuite of wealth and when he returned,he performed revenge on the landload Linton who married his girlfriend Catherine and his children. The novel shows a spirit of fighting against oppression for happiness, and the story is in a quirky and nervous romance. The book was used to be treated as the naive fantasy of a young female writer. However, because the book reflects the heat regional class struggle and British social phenomenon,it was highly praised by critics and gained much population amoung the readers.

Wuthering Heights
So many times, I have heard the novel Wuthering Heights, but at first, I refused to read it. I used to think it vulgar to read love novels; I preferred to read fancy novels.
My opinions were not changed until one day I read Wuthering Heights by accident. I was deeply touched by the story and I began to know more about one of the most important aspects of life, I mean love.
The story of Wuthering Heights really began at the summer of 1777, when Mr. Earnshaw adopted a gypsy boy and gave him the name Heathcliff, and let him stay with his daughter Cathy and his son Hindly. Staying with Heathcliff every day, Cathy fell in love with him; While Hindly hated Heathcliff very much.
Several years later, Mr. Earnshaw died, and Hindly became the host of Wuthering Heights. He did his utmost to antagonize Heathcliff, which increased the hatred between them, while the love between Heathcliff and Cathy was not changed.
One day, the son of the host of Thrushcross Grange, Edigar asked for the hand of Cathy. Did not love Edigar, Cathy loved Heathcliff very much. However, she thought it ashamed to marry a poor servant. Therefore, she thought of an idea, and decided to marry Edigar and use his money to help Heathcliff shake off the bad treatment of his brother. Hearing that Cathy would like to marry him, Heathcliff’s heart was broken and left Wuthering Heights, never return.
Did not see Heathcliff, Cathy became terrible sick. She waited for Heathcliff for three years and then married Edigar at the pressure of his brother.
Some years later Heathcliff turned to be a handsome rich man and came back. He took advantage of Hindly’s bad habits and took his property. Then he deceived Isabella, who was the sister of Edigar married her and misused her afterwards. Totally disappointed at Heathcliff, Isabella, left him, and later gave birth to their son, little Linton. Cathy gave birth to little Cathy and then died. Little Linton was recaptured by Heathcliff after Isabella died.
16 years later, Heathcliff hijacked little Cathy and forced her to marry his son little Linton, and then he took the possession of Linton.
Soon little Linton died, and little Cathy fell in love with Hareton, the son of Hindly, which went against Heathcliff’s wish. However, finally he found the young lovers were just like Cathy and him. Suffering from the ghost of Cathy, he stopped reprisal and finally died in the room where Cathy used to stay.
Then little Cathy and Hareton got married and they lead a happy life.
I thought a lot after reading the novel.
There are two kinds of love. One is shallow, and the other one is true. In the novel, Edgar fell in love with Cathy, and Isabella was in love with Heathcliff, but these are not true love. Why would Edgar love Cathy? Because “Cathy was as pretty as a flower”. He knew nothing about Cathy before they got married. He did not know that Cathy agreed to marry him just because she wanted to use his fortune to help Heathcliff. He just knew that Cathy was beautiful and that was enough for him to marry her. Just imagine what would happen if there have been a more beautiful girl to be his friend. It is similar to Isabella. How could you marry someone you did not really love?
The love between Cathy and Heathcliff is true, and it is the main plot of the novel. Cathy loved Heathcliff, and she would rather marry a man she did not love than see heathcliff suffer from her brother, but she did not know in the heart of Heathcliff, love was more important than everything was.
She said she would be ashamed to marry Heathcliff, because “he’s nothing but a farm boy”. I was shocked to see that and I even doubted whether her love to Heathcliff was true. Then I realized she did love Heathcliff or she would not have waited for 3 years. It was just one of the weaknesses of the rich. They looked down to the poor, but in fact, they were weak in character. Edgar, Isabella, and Cathy were all naïve. Hindly was completely rubbish. Their silly behaviors led to the tragedy.
Most people thought that Heathcliff was devil or at least he should not do too many things wrongly. However, I thought him a victim.
As an orphan Heathcliff did not know where he was from and who he was. When he was young, he was always abused and laughed at by Hindly. Only two people loved him, one was Mr. Earnshaw, who died when he was young, the other one was Cathy, who loved him but suffered from great pain. To him, Cathy was everything, after Mr. Earnshaw’s death. Unfortunately, Cathy’s childish choice made them unhappy all their life span. Heathcliff not only lost Cathy, but also lost everything.
He can forgive the one who did harm to him, but cannot forgive the ones who did harm to Cathy. He loved Cathy so much that when Cathy left him, no one can bring him happiness. He became crazy, and lost himself in unbearable pain. To a desperate man, what he could do for her was to take revenge. What he did further was for Cathy.
At last, he found little Cathy and Hareton were just like Cathy and him when they were young; he came to himself and realized that it was a bad ending. Though few happiness he had had all his life, he stopped bringing pain for the young, and left the broken-hearted world to be with Cathy, the woman who was the fountainhead of his suffering but was the only who could give him happiness. I see, although he had done too many wrong things, he was a kind man by nature.
In my opinion, the writer, Emily Bronte wanted to tell us, there were no differences between the poor and the rich, everyone, wherever you from and whether you were rich or not, should be equal.
It took me 2 weeks to read the short version, while in order to have a better understanding of it, I spent one and a half months to read the Chinese edition and the original edition. It does be a very good novel and worth reading many times.

Many times in life, people leave our lives and then come back into them.
However, we remember them, but they do not remember us. The same thing
happened in Emily Bront?'s book Wuthering Heights. Linton, taken by his
mother to London after his birth, never knew his father, then when things
happened, he came back home. He had family fighting over where he was to
live and whom he would be around. Not knowing part of your family until
after you are fifteen is hard.
Isabella took her son, after he was born, and moved to London away from
Thrushcross Grange. At the same time, she moved away from her husband,
Heathcliff. During the time that Isabella and Linton were gone, Isabella got
sick and passed away. Right before her death, a letter came saying that she
was dying so Hindley went to visit her. While he was there, she did passed
on so he brought Linton back with him. Once back, everyone looked after him
and made him feel at home.
Heathcliff soon came to the knowledge that his son had returned to
Wuthering Heights. He then sent someone to Wuthering Heights to get Linton.
However, he did not know that Linton was already asleep so he did not get the
boy that night. The next day the boy was taken to Heathcliff at Thrushcross
Grange. The father and son were nothing alike, and Linton was intimidated by
his father. He did stay, and meet some of his relatives that he had never
seen, who helped him adjust to living there.
Everyday in our lives we run into situations that we wish we had never
been involved with. I relate to the characters of Linton and Heathcliff. I
am like Linton because people know who I am, but I never remember meeting
them, and am scared around them. I also feel the same as Hindly might have
of. This is because I would want to see the person I did not know, but then
I would not know how to cat around them. In time people come around, but
others, as with Heathcliff and Linton, never come around.
Everyday life is something we take for granted. No matter how you feel,
you may never come to understand it, till you find someone else in the same
situation. The above described situation only gives one instance of the many
situations in Emily Bront?'s book, Wuthering Heights, were you could relate
your life to someone else's. This book gives the true facts about what
family life is really like.

1.What are the differences between the Heights and Creighton House?
The Heights are a family with disorder and secrets. It lacks the warmth and sense of belonging that Creighton seems to pocess. Both are big houses with reknown reputations, however the Creightons is what we call a real family where siblings have close relationships, while the Heights are just people with blood ties living together showing no empathy for each other.
2.Do you think Catherine should be exited when she meets Heathcliff again?
Catherine would meet up with Heathcliff with mixed feelings. Of course she would be excited, since she continuously stressed out before that Heathcliff is her one and only love. She was significantly crushed when Heathcliff left without a word, leaving her behind facing everything by herself. It is obvious that Catherine wants Heathcliff to return, but not without doubts. She broke Heathcliff's heart with her words of discrimination. Catherine knows Heathcliff too well, he is not back to reconcile with her, he is back for the other R word: revenge. Catherine should know that Heathcliff will certainly destroy everything that she owns, including her husband. Thus her reaction upon Heathcliff's return should be that of excitment and fear mingled.
3.Isabella runs away with Heathcliff. Do they love each other? Shoud we be sympathetic with Isabella?
Isabella has a puppy love for Heathcliff. She feels attracted towards the Heathcliff that she knows. She thinks he is intriguing and can show her all the fun in the outside world. Heathcliff, on the other hand, cares only for Catherine whom he loves yet hates. The only reason that he seduced Isabella is because she is the sister of Lincoln, tha man who stole Catherine away. Heathcliff is taking revenge and grudge on Lincoln's sister to make her suffer and hurt him indirectly. Yes, we should be sympathetic with Isabella because as we read on, we will discover that not only Heathcliff does not like her at all he tend to be abusive towards her, and even caused her to die a young age. It is not unsiuitable to say that Heathcliff destroyed Isabella's happiness.

  Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights tells us a complicated and fantastic story of two generations in the 18th century just happened in Wuthering Heights.
In 1801,a gentleman named Lockwood rented a fine house and park called Thrushcross Grange in Yorkshire, the host Mr.Heathcliff was rude to him.He also met young man called Hareton, uncultured and rough. One night ,a goast came to Lockwood and it was proved to be Catherine, the lover of Heathcliff.Lockwood was scared by the goast and also gradually,he learned more and more about the histories of two local families of the Earnshaws and the Lintons.
In around 1760,a gentleman-farmer named Earnshaw went from his farm,Wuthering Heights,to Liverpool on a business trip.He found there a little boy who had apparently been abandoned on the streets, and brought the child home to his own family of his wife, his son Hindley, his daughter Catherine..He named the boy Heathcliff. But all the familiy members disliked the strange boy except Catherine, they soon became good friends and played together.Earnshaw’s wife soon died. And Hindley was sent to college.
Some years later,Earnshaw's health declined and then he died finally.Hindley became the host of Wuthering Heights. He treated Heathcliff badly and destroyed the love between Heathcliff and his sister. But they still loved each other deeply. One day, they two ran to the Grange, where lived Edgar and Isabella.Catherine was treated well for 5 weeks while Heathcliff was throwed out by the Lintons. After 5 weeks,Catherine came back being a beautiful young lady. And she finally disappointed Heathcliff and married Edgar.
Before that Hindley had married a woman and she died left a baby.Hindley became more and more cruel from then on.
Then Heathcliff left the Wuthering Heights with his deep love sadly. Some time later,Heathcliff returned suddenly, and he had become a wealthy, handsome gentleman.Catherine was quite happy when she saw Heathcliff again because she still loved him very much. However Heathcliff choosed to marry with Isabella, the sister of Edgar. He put his hatred deeply in his own heart.
Later Catherine had a baby girl also named Catherine.Hindley’s son named Hareton.Catherine died after she gave the birth to little Cathy.Several months later Hindley got bankrupt and died.Heathcliff finally became the owner of Wuthering Heights. But he treated cruelly to his wife.Isabella could not bear his inhumanity so she ran away and then she got a baby named Linton.
Several years later, the children growed up.Edgar was in poor health and didn't know about Linton's equally bad health and bad character,so he thought it would be good for Catherine to marry him - since Linton and not Catherine would inherit the Grange, most likely. But little Cathy did not love Linton.Linton died due to his poor health after they two got married.Little Cathy became a young widow. As her father-in-law,Heathcliff also took the Grange away.
Little Cathy and Hindly’s son Hareton were just like Heathcliff and Catherine. They loved each other though Heathcliff tried everything to ruin them. Finally he realized Hareton was just himself who loved Catherine deeply stilled.
In the end,Heathcliff became low in spirit and also weak in health. After his death, little Catherine and Hareton planned to marry and move to the Grange.

A Summary of "Wuthering Heights"
Perhaps the most enduring and affecting of the Bronte sisters' work is Wuthering Heights.Emily Bronte's tale of heartbreak and mystery still resonates on an emotional level with its theme of doomed romance. It was written between October 1845 and June 1846,appearing in print finally in December 1847.Emily's sister Charlotte spoke of the "horror of great darkness" surrounding the novel in her memoirs and it only received recognition after Emily's death from consumption in 1848.Much of the first half of the novel concerns the passionate and illicit relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Mr Heathcliff as narrated by a number of individuals:primarily by Mr Lockwood and Nelly Dean, the housekeeper of Thrushcross Grange.

  作者及家庭背景
Emily Brontë was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England. Her father, the Rev. Patrick Brontë, had moved from Ireland to Weatherfield, in Essex, where he taught in Sunday school. Eventually he settled in Yorkshire, the centre of his life's work. In 1812 he married Maria Branwell of Penzance. Patrick Brontë loved poetry, he published several books of prose and verse and wrote to local newspapers. In 1820 he moved to Hawort, a poverty-stricken little town at the edge of a large tract of moorland, where he served as a rector and chairman of the parish committee.
  作品背景
Wuthering Heights has been filmed several times. William Wyler's version from 1939, starring Merle Oberon as Cathy and Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff, is considered on of the screen's classic romances. However, the English writer Graham Greene criticized the reconstructing of the Yorkshire moors in the Conejo Hills in California. "How much better they would have made Wuthering Heights in France," wrote Greene. "They know there how to shoot sexual passion, but in this Californian-constructed Yorkshire, among the sensitive neurotic English voices, sex is cellophaned; there is no egotism, no obsession. So a lot of reverence has gone into a picture which should have been as coarse as a sewer." (Spectator, May 5, 1939) Luis Bunñuel set the events of the amour fou in an arid Mexican landscape. The music was based on melodies from Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner.
"Sleep not, dream not; this bright day
  Will not, cannot last for aye;
Bliss like thine is bought by years
Dark with torment and with tears."
  (from 'Sleep not', 1846)
Emily Brontë died of tuberculosis in the late 1848.
  内容简介
One of the finest romantic films ever filmed, this 1939 Samuel Goldwyn production rates with many - including myself - as being the most beloved version of Emily Bronte's haunting novel. Although it stops at chapter seventeen and the ending is seen as a bit trite by some, it's a brilliantly enacted, finely mounted production with beautiful photography and authentic period detail set-wise. Merle Oberon is well-cast as the selfish, vain and rather shallow Cathy. What makes her character so intriguing and interesting is that no matter what happens to her materially, she has an undying love for the gypsy-blooded heathen named Heathcliff. Laurence Olivier, never a great success in films prior to this, gives a brutally honest account of everything Bronte's Heathcliff should be: proud, bold, vengeful & darkly brooding -a tortured soul in general. Wyler's guiding hand is patent throughout: it was Olivier himself who gave credit to the meticulous director in teaching him the particular ropes of screen acting: it shows! Lady-like Isabella is well-played by the Irish Geraldine Page, while Ellen, the long-suffering servant is played sympathetically by the fine character actress Flora Robson. David Niven, ideally cast as the milquetoasty Edgar Linton, actually had a clause in his contract which freed him from having to do crying scenes! A timeless masterpiece of the "haunting" love story genre, this was Goldwyn's personal favourite of all his films.

As we know the family Bronte are British household writers.Emily Bronte is one of them. She is a poet and novelist. She wrote 193 poems and only one novel which helps her lay in English even the world literature history status. It's "Wuthering Heighes".
Wuthering Heights was a house's name. Its owner was Mr Earnshaw. He had three childern——Hindley,Catherina and Heathcliff. The last child was adopted. As time went by,Catherina and Heathcliff fell in love but Hindley hated the latter. After their father died,Hindley began to be cruel to Heathcliff.Catherina wanted to help Heathcliff get rid of Hindley,so she married with Edgar Linton. However, Heathcliff didn't know it.He was angry and left.He didn't come until he became rich and he began his revenge.Hindley always drank and play cards after his wife died.Heathcliff made use of it and own his property. Then he marride with Edgar's sister——Isabella and afflicted her. Then he made his son and Edgar's daughter get married and own Edgar's property which ended his revenge.
The whole story is filled with love and hatred. It seems love is easy to be changed into hatred.Life always don't go like we eapect. Many stones and rivers are in the way.We will meet people we don't like or the people we love hurt us.When we are confronted with these,we always burn with anger and defend against them.Maybe there will be a while you will feel very happy after you make him upset, but you'll regret sooner or later.
There is a sentence in well-known "Three Character Classic " that man 's nature is good.I believe everyone can find goodness in their hearts. But why there are still so many people in the hatred?Because they don't know how to forgive others. They are always implusive. Therefore, they should learn to control their emotions. They should calm down at first and stand on the others' side to think about if they were him, what they will do.Maybe they will understand him and become more broad -minded.
Forgive others is forgive yourself. If you hate someone, your heart will be afflicted, too. You will not feel comfortable, either.Trying to forgive others, you will find you like being released.
Besides hatred, the book also talks about love.It tells us that "All shall be well,Jack shall have Jill".At the end of the story, after Catherina and Heathcliff died, people always saw them playing togather near the church or even in Wuthering Heights. So at last, they were togather in heaven. And it also teaches me that if you love someone, try to understand him.Don't miss him.Don't care much about his money or background.Live happily is the most important.
After I read the whole story,I also find an interesting thing. In the earlier time, people didn't care about blood lineage when they intend to marry someone.Heathcliff's son was Catherina's daughter's cousin, but they got married. It will not be allowed nowadays.
At last,I want to say,we only have one life, don't do things that we will regret and try to be more tolerant.

《呼啸山庄》 After reading Wuthering Heights, the love and the hatred between Catherine and Heathcliff still linger in my head. Wuthering Heights gives me a cold, withering, and lonely feeling; however, at the end the book the author shows us that the human kindness is not diminished at Wuthering heights, even though the wind can break off a tree that doesn’t mean it can break off the whole forest. Even though hatred destroyed Heathcliff , Catherine, Edgar and Elizabeth’s happiness, that doesn’t mean Cathy and Hareton’s happiness.
Actually, there is no such a character I really like in Wuthering Heights, every character seems teemed with agony and animosity, especially Heathcliff. Heathcliff is an orphan before Mr.Earnshaw adopt him, and in the novel, it says that Mr.Earnshaw treats Heathcliff even better than his own son, Hindley Earnshaw. It’s quite amazing that in spite of Earnshaw’s nice treatment, Heathcliff has no gratitude at all, he revenged Hindley and Catherine, even their heirs. After reading Heathcliff’story, my feeling is complicated, although he is the avenger who dominate the whole story by using his vengeful machinations, he is also the most pitiful guy in Wuthering Heights; he doesn’t know what is love and don’t know how to love. Heathcliff has lived with the Earnshaws for more than 10 years, but there is no attachment between him and the whole family except Catherine, but even Catherine who was died because of Heathcliff’s tournament. When he is torturing others, he is also giving himself a suffering.
Catherine, who is the heroine in the book, is described by Nelly as capricious and selfish. She is just like Heathcliff, doesn’t know how to love at all.
Anyways, Wuthering Heights gave me a torment, you can’t see any warm scene in the book, all you see is the fierce wind howled, and wild moor. However, at the end, the combination between Hareton and Cathy seems a hopeful light in the darkness, and the break of the day finally coming!

Hamlet(哈姆雷特)
Shakspere (wrong spelling) created Hamlet--a man with wisdom and courage .In order to revenge on his uncle for killing his father,he pretented (spelling mistake) to be mad and suffered a series of misery. On the contrary,we can also say that Hamlet is rude and selfish for he did not think twice before his revenge .if (Capitalize "If" since it is the beginning word of the sentence.) a country has no king, how can a country keep alive (You need a question mark here since it is a question.) So,every thing has two sides, the bright side and adumbral side.Every time we make a decision we have to think twice.
Comment:
Be careful with your spelling, grammar, and punctuation.Too many uncessary mistakes.
It is good that you looked at both the dark and bright sides of Hamlet.Thats quite objective and convincing.
