色雷斯的地域范围古今不同： 色雷斯人最初居住在中马其顿，但在公元前7世纪早期马其顿王国成立后，色雷斯人受到挤压，被迫向东转移，最终占据了巴尔干的东北。随后，希腊人开始在色雷斯人领地的沿岸殖民，这遭到色雷斯人的激烈反抗。从波希战争到伯罗奔尼撒战争，雅典先后9次对斯台蒙峡谷地区殖民活动都以失败告终。公元前6世纪早期，波斯征服了色雷斯，将其并入skudra行省，色雷斯人被迫参加了波斯针对斯基台人和希腊人的侵略战争。大约6000名比西亚色雷斯人参加了第二次波希战争，不过色雷斯人出工不出力，他们更大的兴趣却是偷窃波斯人的战车和马。因此，只有很少的色雷斯人参加了普拉塔亚会战。会战结束后，色雷斯人还袭击了经过其领土的波斯军队，杀伤了波斯指挥官mardonius。 阿德利希亚是最强大的色雷斯部落，大多数色雷斯王都来自该部落。大约公元前460，特雷斯一世建立了阿德利希亚王国，该王国的统治中心是色雷斯中部的平原，公元前3世纪，他们在平原上建立了自己的首都，也是色雷斯唯一的城市，seuthopolis。公元前445，接替特雷斯一世的是伟大的Sitalkes，后者与西徐亚进行了一场战争，后来双方签定了和约（不过，在公元前429，国王又攻击了西徐亚）。伊斯特洛斯河于是成为阿德利希亚王国的北部边界。王国每年有800塔兰特的收入，这仅次于雅典。伯罗奔尼撒战争期间，色雷斯是雅典的盟友。斯巴达试图拉拢阿德利希亚王国，但被拒绝。斯巴达派往波斯的使者途经色雷斯时也被刺杀。429BC，应雅典的要求，Sitalkes率15万色雷斯战士南下，马其顿国王佩狄卡斯的侄子阿敏塔斯也在军中，国王向他许诺立其为新的马其顿国王。这引起了整个希腊世界的震动，不过，当色雷斯人达到约定地点时，却没有发现一个雅典人。原来，雅典认为Sitalkes变化无常，预期色雷斯不会守约，并没有派军队前去接应。缺少粮食的色雷斯在蹂躏该地区整整8天。佩狄卡斯贿赂了色雷斯军的副帅，Sitalkes的侄子Seuthes，后者说服国王撤军。424BC，Sitalkes在征讨特里巴利人的战争中逝世。他的坟墓于2000年在索非亚以东100英里处被发现。既然阿德利希亚王国分裂了，色雷斯人仍在希腊事务中扮演重要的角色。423BC，进攻曼德和司其欧捏的雅典军队中有1000色雷斯雇佣兵。422BC，在安菲伯利斯击败克力翁（Cleon）伯拉西达的军队中，色雷斯雇佣兵的比例也很大。413BC，1300未来得及跟随雅典舰队前往西西里的迪伊人被打发回家；但途经皮奥夏时，他们洗劫了塔纳格拉（Tanagra）和Mycalessos，在Mycalessos色雷斯人杀光了所有居民和牲畜，这是伯罗奔尼撒战争期间最血腥、最残忍的事件。40色雷斯骑兵和800色雷斯持盾标枪兵跟随希腊雇佣兵参加了小居鲁士的叛乱。在小居鲁士死后，部分色雷斯人投奔了波斯人，其余的跟随希腊人返回了欧洲。 雅典通过挑拨阿德利希亚内部争斗来控制色雷斯人。407/406BC，阿德利希亚王国被Medokos和Seuthes二世瓜分。雅典人亚西比德（Alcibiades）与两者都保持联盟关系，唆使色雷斯人攻击赫勒斯旁的敌对希腊殖民地和为雅典提供雇佣兵。同时，亚西比亚还修建了横穿加利波利（Gallipoli）半岛的城墙，保护希腊殖民地免于色雷斯人的侵扰；另外，他也不断出击零散的色雷斯部落。为了对付Medokos，Seuthes二世雇佣了6000名从亚洲返回的希腊雇佣兵，其中有1000名持盾轻步兵、标枪兵和投石兵，50骑兵；再加上国王的军队，总兵力为2万。这只军队帮助Seuthes控制黑海沿岸。几个月后，部分希腊雇佣兵返回希腊，其余的则跟随斯巴达将军Dercylidas对付小亚的比西尼亚人（Bithynia）。比西尼亚人曾是波斯帝国的一部分，但在435BC左右脱离了波斯的统治，此后给当地带来极大的困扰。Seuthes二世曾派200骑兵和300持盾轻步兵帮助斯巴达对付比西尼亚人。这些色雷斯人留下200希腊重步兵守卫营地，外出劫掠去了。但比西尼亚人此时却攻击营地，希腊重步兵被色雷斯标枪兵打的溃不成军，只有15人在这场屠杀幸存。狡猾的雅典将军伊非克拉底（Iphicrades）曾为雅典对付阿格西拉。战争结束后，他又作为雇佣军为色雷斯人卖命；他帮助Seuthes于389BC登上王位。Seuthes死后，他又辅佐Kotys一世，帮助国王从雅典那里夺回爱琴海沿岸的色雷斯领土。Kotys一世成功恢复了阿德利希亚王国，为此，他自称阿波罗的后代。伊非克拉底也娶了国王的女儿，并获得两座沿海的城市作为犒赏。据说，伊非克拉底拥有8000人。此外，还有很多希腊将军作为雇佣军为色雷斯人卖命，但数目不详。腓力即位后，他贿赂Kotys一世，使色雷斯拒绝参加伊利里亚人对马其顿的入侵。同年，Kotys一世死于和雅典有关的刺杀。阿德利希亚王国被他的三个儿子Kersebleptes、Amadokos和Berisades瓜分。伊非克拉底叛变，他纵兵洗劫了色雷斯，然后逃出色雷斯。357BC，雅典与色雷斯的三位统治者缔结和约。次年，雅典又和Berrsades的儿子Ketriporis，联合伊利里亚人和派奥尼亚人（Paionia）进攻马其顿。但腓力击败了敌人，并把庞迦伊昂的金矿和银矿从色雷斯人手中夺走。随后，Kersebleptes与雅典的战端又开，直至353BC。357/346BC，先是马其顿将军安提帕特（Antipater），后是腓力，直至441BC，马其顿占领了色雷斯北部，并在这里建立了Philippopolis、Kabyle等城镇。339BC，特里巴利人袭击并击伤了从与西徐亚人的战争撤回路过哈埃穆斯山区的腓力。336BC，腓力遇刺身亡，亚历山大即位。色雷斯人迅速反叛，他们纠集伊利里亚人企图入侵马其顿。亚历山大果断出击色雷斯，击败了叛乱者；并乘胜继续北进，追上正在宿营的特里巴利人。特里巴利人躲进树林中，亚历山大命令弓手和投石兵攻击树林中的敌人，迫使其逃出来。然后，亚历山大命令马其顿骑兵和希腊骑兵分别攻击特里巴利人的左翼和右翼，其余骑兵攻击中路，亚历山大亲率步兵压后。3000特里巴利人被杀。特里巴利国王带着残余逃到多瑙河的一个岛上避难。亚历山大没有足够的船只攻击他，转而攻打达西亚人（Getai）。达西亚人在河对岸布置了4000骑兵和1万步兵，亚历山大收集了足够的船只，乘夜将1500骑兵和4000步兵运过河，这大大出忽达西亚人的意料，当他们看到马其顿方阵和冲锋的骑兵时，纷纷掉头逃亡。达西亚人放弃城镇，带着妻儿向俄罗斯草原逃去。亚历山大洗劫了达西亚人留下的城镇，并扎下营地。特里巴利人派使者来投降，并派兵加入亚历山大的军队。 色雷斯人构成了马其顿军队的五分之一。在侵入亚洲的32000马其顿步兵中，有7000色雷斯人和伊利里亚人，1000弓手和派奥尼亚人；4500骑兵中有500色雷斯和派奥尼亚斥候骑兵，在孟非斯还有500色雷斯骑兵增援东征军。在334BC的格拉尼克会战（Granicus）中，色雷斯人被布置在左翼，但没有参加战斗。后来，色雷斯骑兵参与了向米利都（Miletus）的急行军，色雷斯标枪手则在与披西达伊人（Pisidian）的战斗中掩护了马其顿军左翼。在伊苏斯会战和高加美拉会战中，色雷斯人与克里特弓手混编。被部署在左翼；特别在高加美拉会战中，色雷斯人击退了人数众多的波斯骑兵的攻击。 色雷斯的一些本国部队配备一种特制的长弯刀，这种步兵是不穿盔甲的。他们的长刀令人畏惧，甚至可以从中劈开罗马人的头盔，是少数领罗马人改变装备的部队。色雷斯也拥有来自巴尔 塔奈的战士，他们配备大马士革弯刀。他们是勇猛的战士，只需一击便能杀死敌人。
