摘要：翻译即译意。词义引申是译法研究有机的组成部分，是所有参与翻译实践的人最基本的同时也是首先就要面对的任务，要去掉“翻译腔”必须借助这一技巧。文章拟就词义变通和g1申的理据、依据和“合度”等问题进行一番探讨，并通过例句说明词义引申的具体操作方法，结论中则初步预测这些技巧的实际指导意义。关键词：英汉翻译　词义引申　翻译技巧正如译学泰斗尤金·奈达等宣称的那样，翻译即译意（Translation is translating meaning）。翻译表达过程中如未能首先完成词义处理的任务，尤其是词义的判断和选择、引申和变通，翻译也就成了无源之水，无本之木，即使形式转换得再巧妙也无济于事。笔者认为这正是翻译过程中的“瓶颈”所在，只有在依据语境正确判断和选择词义的基础上，再对词义进行适度引申和变通，才有可能获得像样的译文。本文拟就词义引申和变通的理据、依据与“合度”等问题进行一番探讨，并通过例句说明词义引申的具体操作方法，结论中则初步预测这些技巧的实际指导意义。一、词义引申的理据我们所从事的翻译活动经常是这样进行的：拿到一篇文稿，如果没有生词、难词，我们往往会从大脑现存的词汇库里面搜寻各个词项的意义，然后依据语境，选择其中最适合的那一个对译原文相应的词项，如果遇到了生词、难词，我们大多要查词典，从诸义项中进行巡查摸排。这一过程有时是艰难的，严复先生曾用“一名之立，句月踌躇”来描述这一绞尽脑汁，呕心沥血的过程。问题是，尽管如此，效果却不一定理想：我们自以为已经尽了最大努力选择的忠于原文的词义，放在译文中读起来却怪腔怪调，拗口可笑，甚至文理不通，语焉不详。这种译文“常常存在着许多洋化和不合乎语言表达习惯的表达方式。”这是翻译独有的一种通病，不妨称之为“翻译症”（translation syndrome）。这种病症的症结在于译者抱着先入之见，意欲以不变应万变。翻译过程中遇到“旧词”，往往选择大脑词汇库里的已有义项，这些义项是学习外语过程中积淀在记忆中的，与学习的材料和体验息息相关，而这材料和体验就构成了具体的语境，是按图索骥，依样画瓢，在翻译中直接选用这些已有义项，还是适度调整、变通已有义项，往往可以决定译文的优劣。遇到新词，往往要查词典，选用其中所列意义，而词典所列的则是相对固定的主要意义（primary meaning）或称根义（root meaning），规模大些的词典可能加列一些引申意义和例句。如果原文语境与词典用例一致，词义理解就容易了，有时译文也可像词典用例的译文那样如法炮制。然而，实际上文本中的语境是千变万化、灵活多样的，往往需要译者从根意出发，依据源语语境和译语表达习惯，变通引申出最佳词义，亦即“贴切具体上下文的词义”。有人认为词义引申只发生在原文中，即原文作者在使用这些词汇时已经完成了赋值编码（encoding）的过程，如果说某些词汇具有引申意义，那么它们的引申意义首先是被原作者使用的，译者的任务不过是传达出这种引申意义，因此他们断言词义引申甚至不能视为一种翻译技巧，所谓词义引申的理据也不存在。我们承认在翻译开始之前，原文作者已经完成了赋值编码的过程，也至少确立了文本语境，为译者提供了至关重要的词义判断、选择的依据。然而翻译作为一个解码（deeoding）和（用译文语言）重新编码的过程，往往不会仅停留在词义的判断、选择上，而是要进入一个更加能动、更能体现源语信息的阶段，那就是在判断、选择的基础上对词义做适度引申和变通，这是将源语信息赋值于译语词汇，进而实现译文顺畅自然的重要途径。我国译论家对词义引申的理据论述丰富，但汉源在他编著的《翻译基础：理论与方法》中写道，“词语的意义要受具体语境的影响和制约，也就是说，只有在具体语言环境中，才有可能确定其真正的细致的含义。词典里提供的种种解释往往缺乏应有的细节，那是一种概括的孤立的说明。”因此他断言，“翻译时为了符合实际的人物和情节，必须对词典里的措辞进行一定程度的改动或引申，即依顺该词的基本意义，紧扣具体语篇的实在情况，选择较为合适的汉语词语予以表达。”丁树德也分析了引申的理据，他指出：“由于词汇中包含着英汉两个不同民族的风土人情和生活习惯，仅仅依靠词典上的释义来选择词义是不够的，必须采取灵活的手法，从某一词的基本词义出发，根据上下文，引申词义，把该词所关联的深层意义表述出来。”范仲英从诊断“翻译症”病因人手，认为出现这种现象并非由于译者文化水平低，写作能力差，而是由于翻译时受原语表达方式的影响和束缚，字斟句酌，或者对原文扣得太死，译文的用词、结构、比喻等采取字句对照，以此就彼的做法，力求与原文（形式）一致。这样的译文（往往）不符合译语语言习惯和表达方式，也就势必出现翻译症。翻译症的广泛存在也为词义变通和引申提供了充足的理据。运用这类技巧就是要尽量杜绝翻译腔；那么引申的依据又有哪些，合度引申的“度”应该在哪里呢?二、词义引申的的依据和程度许多译论家都提到了语境对词义的影响和制约，而且译界的一句至理名言即“没有语境，就没有意义”（No context，no meaning）也表达了这个理念。词义引申的依据就在其所处的语境之中，这是事实。但除语境之外还有没有别的依据呢?根据上文引言，我们还可发现另一个依据，那就是译文语言表达习惯。这一点在《商务英语翻译》对引申的界定中得到了认同，定义如下：“根据上下文的内在联系，通过句中词或词组乃至整句的字面意义由表及里，运用一些符合汉语习惯的表现法，将原文的实质准确地表达出来。”""这里提及了上下文的内在联系，就是原文的语义逻辑，这是词义判断、选择和引申的出发点。“由表及里”则是由字面意义向深层隐含之义发掘的过程，然后便是采用“符合汉语习惯的表现法”引申出隐含之义。尽管我们说译者可与原文保持互动关系，但事实上我们是根本无法对原文施加任何影响的。原文语境的确提供了至关重要的词义判断、选择和引申的依据，为译者准确理解原文提供了前提和基础，但翻译的根本任务却是在表达中完成的，而要完成这一任务，译文语言的表达习惯便成为路标和依据。这一看法与奈达对翻译的定义一致，他主张“翻译”就是用接受者的语言在意义和风格层面上复制与源语信息最接近的自然对等语。这一主张到目前为止被许多学者视做所有翻译的定义中最具科学性的，因为它“明确地说明了要翻译的是到底是什么（信息，message），同时暗示了由于语言文化上的差异，原文和译文只能做到相对的对等（closest），也考虑到了译文的可接受性（natural）。”依据上面的三个关键词，我们可以将这一主张表述为三个简单的命题：第一，翻译就是准确地译意；第二，译文要体现原文的风格；第三，译文要符合译文语言的表达习惯。只有做到这三点，尤其是第三点，翻译作为跨文化交际的作用才算发挥出来，因为“用某些词语来表达某种思想，即说法，必须符合语言的习惯，才能为人们所接受。”严复也断言，“顾信矣，不达，虽译犹不译也，则达尚焉。”以此强调译文自然顺达的重要性。所以许多翻译论家在“引申”前冠以“合度”二字，以此表达操作有度之意。那么“度”又在哪里呢?众所周知，每一种语言都有自己的表达习惯和语义逻辑。两种语言意义相同而表达方式不同，或者表达方式相同而意义又不同是很常见的现象。操本族语者相互交流使用的是同一语言．只要他们受过一定教育，有一定文化，除非一方或双方都使用了方言土语或者为了达到某种特殊的交际效果，或者故意胡言乱语，一般都不会说出或写出不符合本族语表达习惯的话语，这是因为他们拥有共通的约定俗成的表达方式。而翻译是跨语言跨文化的言语交流活动，必须有两种或更多的语言参与其中，同一原语的表达方式往往因译语表达习惯不同而必须对某些词义进行引申。如A smile．却不能译成“那位新爸爸骄傲地微笑着。”因为汉语不这么说。这类失误在初学翻译的人当中并不少见，原因在于他们片面追求（字面）忠实，结果生造出不能被译文读者所接受的说法。由此我们可以断定，一般译文读者能够接受的地道性就是词义引申的“度”。如果读来不顺，不符合他们内在的母语语感，即便语法结构上没有问题，也必须斟酌重译。当然“一般读者”和“能够接受”都是非常宽泛的概念，所谓“一般读者”在众多“特殊”情况下是不足为凭的。这大概也是在译论中引入读者反应论以及接受美学屡遭攻讦的缘由吧。上策还是要具体问题具体分析。三、词义引申三法现有的翻译教程主要讲解了两种词义引申方法：抽象化引申（generalization）和具体化引申（specialization）。《英汉商务翻译》称“词的概念范围常常应在具体的语境中加以调整，或扩大外延而缩小内涵，或缩小外延而丰富内涵。”这是相向而动的两种手法，涵盖了引申的基本内容。但笔者把抽象化引申中的特殊一类分离出来，专事研讨，依据其表意方式命名为“（专有名词）普通化引申”（commonization）。现举例演示三法如下：（一）抽象化引申英语中表示具体意义的词往往可用来表示事物的一种属性或一个概念，译时可将具体意义引申为某种属性或抽象概念。例如，例1．He managed to make a living with his pen．他靠写作勉强为生。例2．The penis mightier than the sword．智慧胜过武力。例3．His pen would prove mightier than his pickax．后来，事实证明他（马克·吐温）的写作能力超过了他探矿淘金的本领。例1－3三个原句中都有pen，应该说这是所有接触过英语的人都知道的单词，词典上所列义项简单明了。但如果字句对照，以此就彼地翻译，译文虽则保留了原句的形象，语义却失之模糊，由于表达习惯上的差异，译文读者理解很可能出现偏差，这时恐怕译者还需解释这里的pen喻指什么。三句原文中pen表达了具体生动的形象，都是换喻（metony－my），这种辞格使用具体可感的日常事物名称来指代与之密切关联的属性或突出特征，而联想和引申就是理解其意的基本机制。这是一个由具体到抽象，由个体指称到本质属性的概略化或者说是升华的过程。正是这一过程决定了译文的准确性和地道性。虽然因联想和引申具有一定开放性，但依据源语语境和译语表达习惯，这样翻译是合度的。例4．Instead，an system．就智力而言，他起码为现行的教育制度增了光。在以上五句中，例4的bullet由“子弹”的本意引申为“暗杀行径”，一是考虑历史事实（即美国林肯总统遇刺身亡，这也是原文上下文提供的依据）；二是译文的语义逻辑和表达习惯，因为我们几乎不可能说“……子弹使美国人忘却了他所有的毛病”；例5中的performance本意为“表现，表演”，汉语中通常用于指人的行为，所以有人认为这句原文使用了“拟人格”（personification），但笔者觉得说一台机器表现“良好”听起来未免别扭，译味太浓。当然译成“运转良好”应该不错。例6、例7中都包含着隐喻（metaphor），利用两类不同性质的事物（或行为）的相似性，强调和突出某种概念或状况。英语里get into deep water本意为游到深水区，喻指陷入困境，在译文中引申为“问到难以回答的问题”凸现其生动形象。有人给例7rub shoulders找到一个假朋友“摩肩接踵”，只可惜它们是貌合神离，字面相差无几，喻意相去甚远。例8又是一个换喻，跟pen在上文三句中的理解思路是一致的。（二）具体化引申将原文中词义比较宽泛、笼统的表抽象概念或一般行为的词引申为具体的意义或动作。总的趋势是缩小外延而丰富内涵，这样做可以避免照字面迻译造成的模糊性和辞不达意，以确保译文准确到位，符合译语的语义逻辑和表达习惯，例如：例9．Dobbin had been in the coffee－room for an hour or more He had tried all the papers but could not read them．杜宾在咖啡室少说也待了一个钟头。他翻遍了所有的报纸，可什么也没看进去。例9引自萨克雷的《名利场》（Vanity Fair），叙写的是一位叫Dobbin的绅士向朋友的遗孀求婚前的忐忑不安，非常生动。Tried是常用动词，大家再熟悉不过了。全句也没有一个生词，但第二句着实让人为难。保留“尝试着做”这一本意，怎么译都不顺，特别是与第二分句所表述的事实不合。必须由该词的本意出发度变通或做明晰化引申，才能确保动作含义明晰，所说事实准确。 例10．The local press challenaed the license of the TV station． 当地的媒体要求吊销那家电视台的营业执照。 关于chullenge，常用的义项是“挑战、质询、考验（某人能力）”等，但所有这些义项似乎都无法译出原意。根据《朗文现代英汉双解词典》上的释义3：to question the lawfulness or rightness of（someone or something）[质疑（某人或物）的合法性]，同时依据汉语表达习惯作进一步引申，我们最终选择了“要求吊销”。例11．The first step might be to bring about an efficacious UN presence in the area．第一步也许应该在该地区设立联合国有效的办事机构。例12．In my childhood memory，she was always a vaguely embarrassing presence．我记得小时候，不知为什么，她一到我身边我就不自在。例11、12这两句中presence的都需要引申，硬译为“在场、出现、出席”，整句读起来怪怪的，一听就是翻译腔，所以还得借助引申和变通的技巧，使译文顺畅自然。例13．Even when we reduce salt to a fine powder，it stilltastes salty．盐捣成粉末仍是成的。Reduce根义为“减少，降低”，在此句中必须由此义出发，结合在特定语境下汉语日常表达习惯，引申出“捣、碾、磨”等具体明晰的动作含义。例14．At 22，he had first learned what it si to a Negro．22岁那年，他第一次尝到了做黑人的滋味。（或“了解了黑人的境遇”）同样，对大多数学的人来说，本句没有一个生词，表意简洁明白，没想到翻译的时候会卡壳。原因在于原文whatit is表意太笼统、太宽泛，简直无法确定具体意义，我们能做的就是融会原文上下文，再利用母语的语感作标尺。当然这绝不是一蹴而就的过程，大多时候需要反复琢磨和考量，经常还需运用“反推法”即从译语中具体语境下相应的说法，推测自己理解的准确性和表达的地道性。（三）专有名词普通化引申英语经历漫长的发展进入当代，其中沉积了大量的专有名词，原本是指称独一无二的人物、事件、地点等的，但在长期使用的过程中，所指意义逐渐泛化，独特的本真意义转化为普通意义，表达的是从诸如《希腊罗马神话》和《圣经》之类的“元典”随岁月沧桑衍生出来的老道而又新警的意义，它们大多已成典故，既表现古朴的形象，又蕴涵着诗意的隐喻。英汉翻译中，我们大多会舍弃原文形象，力求准确传达意义，这也是具体意义泛化为普通意义的引申之法，目的在于使译文通顺自然，减轻译文读者理解的负担。例如，例15．I Wouk）的《战争风云》这部小说里指邱吉尔，对于熟悉这个文学形象的译文读者来说，保留要比舍弃好，但如果对之一无所知，则需舍弃或加注解释，我们选择舍弃原文形象，对之做普通化引申，译成“好老头”，似乎更简洁明快些。 例17．It is with procrustean thoroughness that the Soviet government squelches all trip．今年暑假我乘火车旅行，有一次匡扶正义，保护弱小之举。原文中专有名词有时保留原来的词形，如例15、16两句，这时做普通化引申，辨识没那么困难，只需弄清楚词义引申的过程即可。但更多的时候词形已发生了变异，如例17、18两句，大写变成了小写，并加上了形容词后缀。这是语法结构所需要的，但对译者来说却等于多了一重障碍，必须沿着词形演变的轨迹追溯该词的原型和本意。例17中的pro－crustean来自Procrustes，是希腊神话中的巨人，他开了一家客栈，里面有一张床，晚间投宿者躺在上面，个儿矮的被生生地拉长，个儿高的被斩断四肢，以便与床等长，该词喻象生动，但要解释才能明白，似乎不如直接把寓义引申出来好。例18的quixotic来自Don Quixote，这是西班牙小说家塞万提斯笔下的人物，梦想成为游侠，匡扶正义，保护弱小，翻译时只保留这一般意义，否则可能给读者造成理解和欣赏的难度。四、结语目前国内许多翻译教程将重点由原先在双语结构对比的基础上简单介绍转换和变通技巧转向了有关语篇意识、文体差异、审美感受以及文化心理等更高层次的带有哲学意义的研究。这是非常重要的翻译学转型，也许代表着译学发展的方向。但是笔者认为，对翻译实践具有高度指导意义的双语转换和变通技巧是译法研究有机的组成部分，是大学翻译技能训练中不可或缺的目标任务。我们知道，英汉翻译中的形式转换技巧，如增益、减省、词类转换等是较易掌握的，但词义处理技巧难度很大，尤其是词义的引申和变通需要进行严格的双语、双文化训练。通过这种训练，至少可以帮助学生自觉地把The
