I Have a Dream

A dream is to a man what wings are to a bird. With a dream in the deep heart"s core, a man is spontaneously driven to hitch his wagon to a star. A dream is an inexhaustible source of energy that keeps our enthusiasm burning, and kindles our desire to enhance our spiritual cultivation, refine our character, and upgrade our quality of life. A life without a dream is like a bird with broken wings, confined to a cage and oblivious of what lies beyond the range of its vision. On the contrary, a man with a dream is like a warrior armed with ambition, foresight and gallantry, daring to step into an unknown domain to make a journey of adventure. It is dream that adds fullness, variety, and spice to our life and makes it worth living.

I have a dream. It is d dream that is deeply rooted in human nature. I dream that one day people of all origins can live in harmony and peace without being discriminated against or persecuted. The bounty of the earth can be shared by every single human being. Mutual respect will guarantee the existence and continuation of the diversity of customs and cultures. Love, sympathy, and cooperation will alleviate the sufferings and disasters inflicted upon our fellow men. Respect for basic human rights will put an end to social injustices and evils. When my dream comes true, all men will be truly equal, happy, and free.

Everyone has a dream. I often ask myself. When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a soldier with a gun so that I could defend our motherland.Now I am a young boy with a new dream——to be a doctor. I want to be a famous doctor, helping the sick and saving their lives.

I Have a Dream

I have a dream that one day I can do anything what I want to do . But what is I want to do? It is simple too . I just want to open a flower shop , my own flower shop , a warm and beautiful shop . It is because I like flowers very much and I"m a girl going after romantic . I hope that in my shop , there are all kinds of different beautiful flowers such as rose , lily , tulip , violet , carnation , narcissus , lilac , orchid and so on . If I have such a flower shop , my life will be happy and perfect . You see , I can wander in the beautiful flowers , I will smile , sing and dance . Good morning, everyone. My name is Jiang Xialin. I"m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. Today my topic is the dream, I hope you would like it and found a dream is important to you and you will cherish it more.

First, I want to ask you some questions:

Do you have a dream?

Why do you make that dream?

How do you treat your dream?

A dream is somebody"s expectation for the future. A dream is somebody"s design for the future on themselves" thought. A dream is to a man just as wings to a bird. A life without a dream is like a bird with broken wings. Confined to a cage and oblivious of what lies beyond the range of its vision. On the contrary, a man with a dream is like a warrior armed with ambition, foresight and gallantry, daring to step into an unknown domain to make a journey of adventure. However, there is always a gap between dream and reality. we still remembered king"s loudly voice:“I have a dream that one day ......”, And from then on, all the Negro fighting for this dream. Although the discrimination has become better than before, Negro have not the really parity with others up to now, this is precisely reality.

At one time, maybe your dream is to study in Tsinghua University or Beijing University, as well you work day and night for this dream. But at last, you have not carried out it successfully, because you have come to Chongqing University. This is the very reality too. From above two examples, we can easily find that there is a gap between the dream and the reality.

Generally speaking, dream overtop reality, in this manner, we will receive buffet from reality. Face to inspect from reality above, what we should do? Someone may discard his dream, someone may change his dream. However, we can not lost sight of following truth. Conversely, if only your dream rooted in the reality, we may find that if the reality reaches the dream easily, following it, what we should pursue? So we should work hard to let the reality to approach dream. More hard we work, more near reality to ours dream.

I say to you, my dear friends, so even though we must face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, we must hold dreams. At last, I will sent you some words:believe you can fly, believe you can take the sky, hard working, you may realize your dreams.

withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of cap

tivity. But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negr

o is still not free.

One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the m

anacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years late

r, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean o

f material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing

in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.

So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition. In a sense we h

ave come to our nation"s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our re

public wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of I

ndependence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to

fall heir.

This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights

of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that Ameri

ca has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are c

oncerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Neg

ro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we r

efuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe tha

t there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this natio

n.

So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the

riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallo

wed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to eng

m. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to

the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportu

nity to all of God"s children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quic

ksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to u

nderestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negr

o"s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn o

f freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Th

ose who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content wi

ll have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will

be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citi

zenship rights.

he whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation un

til the bright day of justice emerges. But there is something that I must say t

o my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of just

gful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from

the cup of bitterness and hatred.

never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in

New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfi

ed, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and right

eousness like a mighty stream.

f despair. I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties an

o join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sister

s and brothers. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley

shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places w

ill be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory

of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our

hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we w

ill be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this fa

ith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a bea

utiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work togethe

r, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up

for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

I have a Dreamby Martin Luther King, Jr.Listen to the story Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity. But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition. In a sense we have come to our nation"s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God"s children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro"s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.  摘要:影视剧,这种集影像、声音于一体的艺术,已经成为现代社会的文化载体之一,并且在促进世界各国间的文化交流方面起到了比较重要的作用。通过欣赏原汁原味的影视作品来学习英语,更成为时下众多的英语爱好者提高英语能力(尤其是听力能力)的重要途径。然而,面对五花八门,琳琅满目的影视作品,广大的英语学习者该如何挑选呢?这与影视作品名称的翻译存在很大程度的关系:名字翻译得好或差,在很大程度上影响到观众们对这部影视作品的好或恶。因此,研究如何把影视作品名称翻译得既贴切而又传神,具有一定的翻译学术研究价值。本文希望通过一系列影视作品名称的翻译例项,来归纳总结出以下三种常见的翻译处理方法,即:直译法、意译法、偏商业化的译法。希望借此抛砖引玉,能有更多的翻译工作者为国内的英语学习者和影视作品爱好者翻译出佳作来,进而为中国的翻译事业和东西方的文化交流做出更大的贡献。   关键词:影视作品名称翻译;直译法;意译法;偏商业化的译法      一:前言:      随着中国改革开放和对外文化交流的日益扩大,输入到中国市场的西方英语影视作品日益增多,然而也有不少内容低阶、制作粗糙的影片混入其中,甚至有些不入流的影片以充满噱头或是吸引眼球的名字来欺骗观众,赚取票房。因为观众在挑选影视作品时,大多是从译名上来判断的。因此,这就给中国的翻译工作者提出了一个挑战?——该如何将影视作品的名称翻译得既到位又得体,从而让中国的观众欣赏到好的影视作品?   由于影视作品自身的特点,决定了片名的翻译与其它的文字翻译既有相同点,又有不同点。相同的是:都要遵循翻译的“信,达,雅”,“既要符合语言规范,又要富有艺术魅力,既要忠实于原片的内容, 又要体现原名的语言特色,力求达到艺术的再创造。”不同的是:片名的翻译有时还要考虑一定的商业目的。事实证明,那些曲解、误解甚至完全主观臆造的翻译则不仅成为影视作品(特别是优秀作品)发行推广的绊脚石,更成为误人子弟的文化垃圾。相反,那些精准而又雅俗共赏的翻译作品就犹如一件件艺术精品,耐人寻味。例如,时下美国正在热映的电视连续剧(Ugly Betty)到中国翻译成《丑女也有出头日》,也正是体现中国文化的特色和贴近中国观众的非常成功的例子。   因此,在英语影视作品名称翻译中, 不妨遵循以下三种常用的翻译处理方法:直译法、意译法、偏商业化的译法。一方面,可以达到向观众准确地宣传和介绍优秀的英语影视作品的目的;另一方面,也能让英语爱好者体会到英文原名与中文译名之间的转化的美感,从中欣赏中西方语言和文化的魅力。      二:三种主要的影视名称翻译处理方法      2.1直译法   一部好的影视作品片名翻译,首先要求翻译工作者在看懂影视作品内容的基础上,忠实准确地将原片标题翻译出来。这样的翻译,常常能让观众一目了然,欣然接受。如When Harry Met Sally《当哈里遇见萨莉》,(King Arthur)《亚瑟王》,Citizen Kane《公民凯恩》, Pearl Harbor《珍珠港》, Cold Mountain《冷山》, Notting Hill《诺丁山》,(Silence Hill)《寂静岭》以上这些以人名或地名为片名的影视剧,很容易让人联想到内容和主题,非常鲜明。再如True Lies《真实的谎言》, Dances with Wolves《与狼共舞》, The Sound of Music《音乐之声》,(Out of Africa)《走出非洲》,(American Pie)《美国派》,(The Pursuit of Happiness)《通往幸福之路》,(A Walk in the Clouds)《云中漫步》等这些翻译都是比较直接地将原片名翻译出来,保持了影片的风格,受到观众普遍认可和接受的。   相反,有些影视作品名的翻译与原文相差甚远,让人摸不著头脑。不仅给人以错误的提示,甚至完全混淆或扭曲原影视作品的意思。去年囊括了美国多项电视奖项的Desperate Housewives 《绝望主妇》,不仅在美国本土受到大家的热烈追捧,甚至在中国CCTV-8电视剧频道一经播出后,都立即掀起了国内的收视 *** 。这部电视剧的成功,除了本身的编剧新颖独特,演员的表演精准到位以外,片名翻译也是可圈可点的。在香港,这部片被翻译成《靓太唔易做》,尽管有地理上的局限性——不懂粤语的观众很有可能就会对“靓太”这种称谓产生误解,但却很到位地把剧中主妇们生活的“不易”给翻译出来了,还算可以接受的范围之内。但在网际网路上的译名,就不能让人容忍了,居然有人将这个片名翻译成《欲乱绝情妻》!这样很容易给观众以误导,以为这是部内容不健康,水平低下的片子,从而避之不及。事实上,这部片子的内容和格调都是健康的,而且对话非常口语化,语速又适中,非常适合广大的英语学习者。这个例子说明,胡乱翻译片名,是对影视制作方的伤害,也是对观众不负责任的表现。 2.2意译法   影视作品是表现出东西方不同文化的一个重要视窗。对影视作品的翻译,可以通过合理归化的手法,将外来文化与本土文化的最佳结合点翻译出来。既尽量按照中国的文化特点进行调整,又将片名翻译得尽可能符合中国观众的文化口味和审美标准,从而来最大限度地吸引观众。例如大嘴美女朱莉亚.罗伯茨主演的 Pretty Woman《风月俏佳人》,有些地方将它直译《漂亮女郎》,尚可接受;但有些地方却翻译成《乌鸦变凤凰》,未免有些差强人意,毕竟太缺乏书面语言的美感,只让人感到口语的粗俗。而且“乌鸦”这种动物在中国人的眼里,是不吉祥的象征,所以如果以这个名字出现,估计会吓退很多品味高阶的观众。还有不少根据剧情意思来翻译的比较优秀的作品,如:(sex and the city)《欲望都市》,(Scream)《惊声尖叫/也翻译成夺命狂呼》,(Speed)《生死时速》,The Look Out《监守自盗》,(Enemy at the Gates)《兵临城下》,(My Fair Lady)《窈窕淑女》,(Rock)《石破天惊》等。   翻译影视作品片名时,除了要尊重原片名所指的意思以外,还可以有适当地处理,表现出一定的美感。比如美国迪斯尼动画片(Color of The Wind)翻译到中国以后,用了《风中奇缘》这个非常具有中国意味的浪漫唯美的译名,没有只是简单地、直截了当地翻译成《风的颜色》,相信前者比后者吸引到了更多的观众:因为这部片子讲得是一位美丽善良的印第安公主和到美国探险的英国上尉之间的传奇爱情故事。所以,如果说后者只能吸引喜爱动画片的儿童的话,那么,前者无疑能吸引不少喜欢爱情片的观众的目光。   2.3偏商业化的译法   影视作品不仅是一种艺术,也是具备商业价值的商品。因此在片名翻译时,要考虑到一定的商业价值。特别是美国好莱坞大片,动辄斥资上亿美元的巨资拍摄而成,成为影视作品市场的“巨鳄”。但是如果因为译名失败,很有可能会导致影片票房的惨淡和制片方严重的经济损失,都是非常令人惋惜的事情。因此,作为一名优秀的、负责任的翻译工作者,在片名的翻译时,既要考虑忠实于原片内容, 又要考虑到译名是否会激发观众观看的欲望,从而保证高额的票房回报,这是非常具有挑战性的研究课题。   在1994年,有一部由法国著名导演吕克.贝松执导的奥斯卡获奖影片(TheProfessional )《这个杀手不太冷》,就是凭借这个精心翻译的片名,挑起了观众强烈的观看欲望,最后在中国市场掀起了争相观看的热潮。试想,如果只是根据英文,简单地翻译成《职业杀手》或《杀手里昂》的话,可能就不会引来这么多关切的目光。毕竟,表现杀手的影视作品已经很多,如果只是随大流,翻译成杀手之类,根本不可能脱颖而出,让观众情有独钟,更不可能取得如此大的票房成绩。事实上,这部电影的主人公里昂的确和一般的杀手不一样:他不是大家心中杀人不眨眼的冷漠杀手,而是从坏人枪口下挽救了少女玛蒂尔徳的正义“杀手”,而且后来他和玛蒂尔徳为躲避追杀,一起相依为命到互生情愫,超出了杀手的冷漠的界限,成为有情有义的杀手。所以,这部片名的翻译既忠实了原片内容, 又巧妙地激发了观看欲,最终取到高额的商业回报。   更多的例子还有,比如:(The Scent)《闻香识女人》 ,(How to Steal a Million) 《偷龙转凤》,(Big Nothing)《微不足道》以上的翻译充分考虑到汉语语言的特点以及一定的商业目的。如果将以上片名分别译为《香味》、《怎样偷一百万》、《大,没什么了不起》就显得平淡乏味,吸引不了观众的眼光。      三、结论      综上所述,我们可以看出,那些脍炙人口的英语影视片名的翻译,大多是在遵循基本的翻译原则基础上,巧妙灵活通过直译、意译、或偏商业化等译法等来处理的。当然,片名的翻译首先要能反映原片名的意思,也就是说要首先忠于原意,然后恰当地通过文化的对等转化意译,或偏商业化等处理法进行巧妙的加工和润色,这样的片名翻译才能赢得观众的认可和喜爱。   我们的翻译工作者在进行影视作品名称翻译的过程中,如果能本着为观众负责的态度,在影视名称的翻译上肯下功夫,多花心思,那么就能为我们广大的电影爱好者和英语学习者翻译出贴切传神的影视名称来。这样,就不仅能够向观众准确地介绍影视作品;又能让英语爱好者体会到英文原名与中文译名之间的转化的美感,从中欣赏到中西方语言和文化的魅力,从而为中西方文化的交流做出应有的贡献。何尝不是翻译工作者的乐事呢?      参考文献:   【1】包惠南 文化语境与语言翻译【M】.北京: 中国对外翻译出版公司.2001   【2】李红霞 英语教学中影视作品片名的翻译原则 甘肃科技纵横2006年 第35 卷 第3 期
