报菜名又名《菜单子》，是非常有名的一个相声贯口。贯口是评书、相声的说功。又称“趟子”，为将一段篇幅较长的说词节奏明快地一气道出，似一串珠玉一贯到底，演员事先把词背得熟练拱口，以起到渲染抒情、展示技巧乃至产生笑料的作用。对此，相声界有着“口快如刀”的要求。好的演员能做到嗓音亮，吐字清，字正腔圆，气口精当，一展“嘴皮子利索”之功力。贯口分大贯口、小贯口两种。小贯口一般十几句，大贯口可长达一百多句。报菜名历史发展老先生们最初创作《报菜名》，是为了展示贯口。但是，流传下来之后，由于其中包袱不足，在实际真正演出的时候，演出机会不多。因此，广为流传的《报菜名》，仅仅是个基础活，属于少儿学艺的入门级作品。“少马爷”马志明先生是《报菜名》新生命的缔造者。“少马爷”将捧逗二人的人物特征进行了充分的丰满化——逗哏的是个见过世面但是落魄了的穷鬼，捧哏是个脑筋稍慢，心地不错的老实人。穷鬼以请客吃饭为名，实则是为了骗捧哏的钱。演员们一般都是按照马先生的方式来进行表演。
