“蛍の光”的原曲来自苏格兰民歌“Auld Lang Syne”。“Auld Lang Syne”为苏格兰语，在翻译成英语时，可直译为“old long since”，意译为“times gone by”。日语可以翻译为“久しき昔”等。汉语翻译“友谊地久天长”。

“蛍の光”的作词者为稻垣千颖，作曲者不详。在作词时，曲名为“萤”，后来改为“萤の光”。根据当用汉字的使用规定，在正书法下，曲名为“蛍の光”。“蛍の光”在诞生之后，一直被定为学校教唱的“唱歌”。在日本学校的毕业典礼上，经常唱“蛍の光”。另外，还用于宴会、圣诞节等场合。1964年东京奥运会的闭幕式上，通过大合唱齐唱“蛍の光”结束了奥运盛典。红白歌会的结束曲就是“蛍の光”。

“蛍の光”的歌词共有4段，但是一般只唱前两段。另外，后两段在不同的历史阶段，歌词内容稍有不同。
