　　在飞机发明史上,有一件令人迷惑的事:兰利(SamuelPierpontLangley)本来是可能成为飞机发明者的――因为他设计的飞机模型早已试飞成功,但当他的全尺寸载人飞机试飞时,却选择了非常奇特的起飞方式,即在波托马克河的一个水上房屋顶上,利用弹射器起飞。这架被称为“飞机场”(Aerodrome)的飞机,在1903年10月7日和12月8日的两次试飞中,都因弹射器的滑轨卡滞,而导致失败。就在兰利的“飞机场”最后一次试验的9天之后,莱特兄弟(Wrightbrothers)于同年12月17日,在北卡罗来纳州的基蒂霍克沙滩上,试飞成功了他们的“飞行者”号飞机,并因而被公认为世界飞机的发明者。 　　1898年3月25日,美国海军部部长助理西奥多u30fb罗斯福(TheodoreRoosevelt)建议研制海上使用的飞行武器。这一具有远见卓识的建议在当时却遭到了冷落和嘲笑。只有身为史密森学会领导人的兰利教授认识到这一建议在军事上的重要意义,而且他身体力行,认真地发明起飞机来。不过,与其他飞机设计者不同,他要发明的不仅是飞机,同时还要是舰载飞机。 　　后来被美国人称为舰载航空之父的钱伯斯舰长并未就此罢休,他又策划了另一次试验。1911年1月18日,勇敢(有人说是莽撞)的飞行员尤金u30fb伊利又冒着侧风和上升气流严重干扰的危险,在“宾夕法尼亚”号装甲巡洋舰上实现了飞机首次拦阻着舰。这一次,在舰上的平台上面,增设了22条拦阻索,它们的每端都连接着一个227公斤的沙袋。飞机的起落架上,加装了3对钢爪,以便在飞机在着舰滑跑时勾住拦阻索。那一天,伊利的飞机以每小时64公里的速度着舰,在拦阻索的作用下,只滑跑了约10米的距离就停住了。而且,在着舰一个小时之后,该机又从舰上起飞,返回了陆上基地。 　　需要说明的是,上述试验飞行都是在军舰抛锚的情况下进行的。战斗机在行驶中的军舰上首次着舰,是由英国皇家空军中队长邓宁(Dunning)于1917年8月2日,在一艘由巡洋舰改装而成的“暴怒”(Furious)号航空母舰上完成的。当时,邓宁驾驶的是索普威思“骆驼”型战斗机。“暴怒”号航母的航速是48公里/小时,正风速为39公里/小时,二者抵消了一大部分飞机与航空母舰的相对速度。 　　不幸的是5天之后,即1917年8月7日,邓宁试图在更大的风速下着舰时,因飞机失速而丧生。前面提到的伊利也是在完成首次着舰飞行的那一年,即1911年10月的一次特技飞行表演中,因飞机失事而结束了年轻生命。 　　 　　舰载战斗机的诞生 　　 　　在航空技术发展的早期,一直以欧美为师的日本,在海军舰载飞机的设计方面,却走在了前面。1921年2月,当日本的航空工业刚刚走上国产化道路的时期,日本三菱发动机公司的名古屋工厂就在英国索普威思公司的赫伯特u30fb史密斯(HerhertSmith)等8名工程师的领导下,开始设计日本第一种专门执行舰载任务的战斗机,取名为“海军十式”(1MF1)。这也是世界上最早的专用舰载战斗机。 　　这种飞机采用木制结构和双翼式布局,装有一台三菱公司制造的液冷式发动机,起落架是不可收放的。1921年10月,由英国飞行员乔丹(Jordan)首次试飞成功。1923年2月,乔丹又驾驶该型飞机,在日本的第一艘航空母舰“凤翔”号上起降成功。为此,三菱公司特授予了试飞员1万日元的奖金。 　　1923年3月16日,日本飞行员吉田大尉在同一艘航空母舰上,成功地进行了日本人自己驾机的首次着舰飞行。 　　“海军十式”飞机的命名是因为它是在日本大正10年列入装备的,所以日本人称它为“海军十年型”或“海军10型”。它的外形设计完全是索普威思公司的风格,特别是它带有凸角补偿的垂直尾翼,更是体现了索普威思公司设计的特色。该型飞机使用性能良好,先后发展了5个型别(1MF1～5),共生产了128架。 　　美国最早的舰载战斗机是钱斯u30fb沃特公司生产的VE-7型飞机。1922年10月17日,格里芬(Griffin)驾驶VE-7SF型战斗机,在美国的第一艘航空母舰“兰利”号上,首次完成在行驶中的舰上起飞。同月26日,美国的舍瓦利耶(Chevalier)少校驾驶“水上飞机”39-B型飞机,在“兰利”号上完成了首次着舰飞行。 　　法国人经过7年的建造,在1927年5月27日才制成了自己的第一艘航空母舰,命名为“贝亚恩”(Béam)。法国早期的舰载飞机是纽波尔-28和昂里奥HD-1等型号。 　　 　　海空大战的序幕 　　 　　1932年初,日本的“海军三式二号”(中岛A1N2)舰载战斗机和“海军十三式三号”(三菱B1M3)舰载攻击机曾参加过侵犯我国上海的空战,并被击落过。1932年2月22日(一说24日),美国波音公司的试飞员罗伯特u30fb肖特(RobertShort)驾驶一架波音218型单座战斗机(即P-12型飞机的改进型)在上海虹桥机场试飞时,与侵犯我国苏州上空的日本“海军十三式三号”舰载攻击机遭遇。肖特当即对侵略者发起攻击,在击落两架日机,并击毙1名日军空中射击员后,肖特壮烈牺牲,成为第一位为悍卫中国领空而献身的外国飞行员。 　　日本三菱公司从1932年开始研制采用下单翼、固定式起落架的“七试”(这里的“试”一般表示试验机或原型机)舰载战斗机。1934年又研制了“九试”战斗机,并在其基础上研制成功“九六式一号”(A5M1)舰载战斗机。尽管在研制过程中出现过不少飞行事故,但三菱公司在飞机设计上仍然尝试了许多先进技术,如为了减小飞机的诱导阻力,机翼选择椭圆形平面形状;在机翼后缘安装由野田哲夫设计的开裂式襟翼,以提高升力、降低着舰速度;为了减轻飞机重量,选用了装有整流罩的气冷式发动机。采用张臂式的下单翼布局,在当时也是有争议的,因为有人认为双翼式布局更有利于提高飞机的机动性能。正是由于敢于采用当时的先进技术,不仅使三菱公司能在与中岛公司的竞争中获胜,也为日本在侵华战争初期提供了主力作战飞机。 　　1937年,三菱公司按照日本海军的要求,开始研制“十二试”(A6M1)舰载战斗机。领导设计的工程师和前面提到的“九六式”飞机相同,仍然是堀越二郎。这种飞机继承了“九六式”飞机的优点,即重量轻、阻力小、机动灵活。此外,安装了功率较大的双排气缸星形气冷式发动机和恒速螺旋桨。鉴于苏联伊-16型战斗机的成功经验,该机还采用了可收放式起落架。为此,还专门从美国进口了一架钱斯u30fb沃特V-143型战斗机作参考。由于考虑到远程作战的需要,特别强调增加飞机的航程。为了达到这一目的,除增大燃油箱的容积外,机翼选择了较大的展弦比(也就是使机翼更细长一些),但限于甲板升降机平台的规格,翼展从原设计的12米减小到11米。停放时,左右翼尖可向上各折起500毫米,使在甲板上的宽度限制在10米之内。增大机翼展弦比,就可以提高飞机的升阻比,不仅使航程增加,还可以缩短起飞滑跑距离和改善爬升性能。为了加强火力,增装了20毫米口径的机炮;为了减小飞行阻力,该机还采用了纺锤形封闭式座舱盖。 　　在1940年3月11日的试飞中,“十二试”飞机因升降舵配重折断,造成严重的飞行事故。1940年7月21日,15架“十二试”(A6M2)生产型就被调往武汉地区参加空战。稍后,9月13日,又有13架该型飞机参加了对我国重庆的长途奔袭。 　　这一型号的飞机列装时,时值日本皇历2600年(即公元1940年)。因尾数为0,因而被命名为“零”式飞机。它在实战中不断改进,曾在太平洋地区的海空大战中称雄一时。“零”式先后发展了14种改型,到1945年8月止共生产10425架,创日本战斗机产量的最高纪录。 　　1941年12月7日,6艘日本海军的航空母舰载着365架飞机,包括三菱“零”式战斗机,中岛“九七式三号”舰载鱼雷攻击机和爱知“九九式”(D3A)俯冲轰炸机等,偷袭美国太平洋舰队的珍珠港基地,共炸沉、炸伤美战舰18艘,击毁飞机188架、击伤159架,美军死亡人员2403人。日军在这次作战中,损失“零”式战斗机9架、“九七式”攻击机5架和“九九式”轰炸机15架。其中的爱知“九九式”轰炸机,因为后来在与美军作战中损失惨重,被日军飞行员自嘲为“九九棺材”。 　　附带说明一下,日本海军飞机型号后面的英文字母的含义是,A代表舰载战斗机、B代表舰载攻击机、D代表舰载轰炸机、M代表特殊机、N代表水上战斗机。 　　 　　太平洋上空的血战 　　 　　在第二次世界大战中,交战各国出动的舰载飞机约35万架次,由舰载机击沉的大型舰艇占被击沉总数的一半以上。在大战中,最惨烈的舰载机作战是在太平洋上进行的。大战初期,仓促应战的苏制伊-16、美制P-40、英制的“水牛”型等战斗机和日本的“零”式战斗机较量已相形见绌,例如1941年12月23日,在保卫缅甸首都仰光的一次战斗中,5架“水牛”型和4架P-40型舰载战斗机被击落。大战之后,总结经验教训,可以看到,日本战斗机设计的成功之处在于结构简单、轻便和零部件可以互换。这样的飞机易于生产、易于维护和易于转运。在空战中机动灵活,便于快速出动。 　　在整个大战期间,美国海军与日机对抗的主力是格鲁门公司生产的“猫”(Cat)系列舰载战斗机,如“野猫”、“地狱猫”(即“恶妇”)、“虎猫”和“熊猫”等。 　　1942年5月3日至8日,在珊瑚海上发生了首次舰载机之间的海空作战。当时,企图攻占巴布亚新几内亚莫尔兹比港的日军航空母舰混合舰队和美军航空母舰混合舰队遭遇,发生激烈的海空大战。结果,美军的航空母舰1沉1伤,飞机损失74架;日军1舰负伤,飞机损失100架。 　　1942年6月3日至6日,载有飞机约700架的日本联合舰队企图攻占中途岛。美国出动载有飞机233架的混合舰队迎战。在大规模的海空作战中,日方损失军舰14艘(其中航空母舰4艘)、飞机332架(其中280架是随军舰沉没的);美方损失军舰2艘、飞机147架。 　　参加上述重大海空作战的格鲁门F4F“野猫”(Wildcat)型舰载战斗机算得上是大器晚成的机型。它从1936年3月开始研制,到1940年11月投入服役,经历了57个月的漫长岁月,而当时德国研制的Bf-109和英国研制的“喷火”等战斗机的研制周期是29个月,日本的“零”式飞机的研制周期更短,只有12个月。“野猫”采用全金属结构、张臂式中单翼及可收放式起落架的总体设计,在当时是先进技术的代表。中单翼设计,可以降低飞机的干扰阻力,但如果象下单翼飞机那样将起落架安装在机翼上,起落架支柱就要很长,因而只好将起落架装在机身上。另一个特点是“野猫”飞机的机体质量高度集中,这样做对提高空中机动性是有利的。正因为出于这种考虑,它的机身显得很短粗,给人留下很深印象。 　　“野猫”刚被运抵前线时,就赶上了“珍港事件”。1941年12月8日,那一天,16架刚出厂的“野猫”就被炸毁在地面,当时并没有发挥多大作用,但后来有机会参加了几次重大的海空作战。在实战中,飞行员对它的性能和操纵品质感到满意。与日本的“零”式相比,它虽然发动机功率较大(1200马力),但因飞行重量较大(2511～3396公斤),所以在平飞速度和爬升率方面都处于劣势。而且它没有装备航空机炮,只有6挺127毫米机枪,火力也稍嫌不足。 　　“野猫”在二战期间共生产7825架,英国、法国和希腊等国都有使用,但没能参加战斗。 　　1943年8月31日,美国海军开始起用格鲁门公司研制的F6F“恶妇”(Hellcat)型舰载战斗机。Hellcat英文的原义是“恶妇”,但为了表明F6F同属于格鲁门的“猫”(Cat)系列战斗机,所以有人按其表面意思译为“地狱猫”(即Hell为“地狱”,Cat为“猫”)。“恶妇”或“地狱猫”一出现,使美军的装备得到加强,作战形势立即发生改变。1943年10月5日,美国飞行员邓肯(EnsRobertDuncan)驾驶“恶妇”飞机在加罗林的特鲁克上空,一次就击落两架“零”式战斗机,使日本飞行员不得不刮目相看。 　　1945年1月24日和29日,英国舰队的4艘航空母舰两次袭击苏门答腊港的日本炼油厂。“恶妇”和“海盗”型战斗机并肩作战,在空中击落日机30架,更多的日机被摧毁在地面。 　　上面提到的“海盗”是美国沃特飞机公司生产的F4U型舰载战斗机的别名。它装有2000马力的大功率活塞式发动机,是“零”式飞机的又一克星。它采用了独特的下单翼倒海鸥式布局,这样做可以缩短在机翼上安装起落架支柱的长度。 　　1943年10月31日夜间,美海军上尉奥尼尔(Oneil)驾驶F4U-2型夜间战斗机在韦拉拉韦拉海面上,击毁1架日本“一式”攻击机。这是美太平洋舰队装有雷达的夜间战斗机的首次战果。 　　“海盗”型飞机从1940年5月29日首飞,直到1952年12月还在生产,是美国二战期间的战斗机生产期最长的。1945年8月,日本投降后,曾有200架F4U型飞机从航空母舰上起飞,飞到当时的北平上空,以表示庆祝。
