  1)Part one: Warm up (10分钟)

  2)Part two: Modern Top ten

  3)Part there: More Fantastic Sayings

  4)Part four: Culture Shock

  5)Part five: Conversation

  6)Part six: Role-play

Culture Shock

Whatisthecultureshock

Culture shock is an experience a person may have when one moves to a cultural environment which is different from one"s own; it is also the personal disorientation a person may feel when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new country, a move between social environments, or simply transition to another type of life. One of the most common causes of culture shock involves individuals in a foreign environment. Culture shock can be described as consisting of at least one of four distinct phases: honeymoon, negotiation, adjustment, and adaptation.Common problems include: information overload, language barrier, generation gap, technology gap, skill interdependence, formulation dependency, homesickness (cultural), infinite regress (homesickness), boredom (job dependency), response ability (cultural skill set). There is no true way to entirely prevent culture shock, as individuals in any society are personally affected by cultural contrasts differently.

what is culture shock?what can we do to overcome

答:(1)Culture shock can be described as the feelings one experiences after leaving their familiar, home culture to live in another cultural or social environment. Many people associate culture shock only with extreme changes of going from one country to another, but it can also be experienced closer to home, such as when traveling from one city to another within your own country. Even the most open-minded and culturally sensitive among us are not immune to culture shock.(2)Learn as much as you can about the new location before you go. This means the good, the bad, and the simply different — from time zones, to what side of the street people drive on, to climate/temperature, to foods, political system, culture, customs and religions, to "Can you drink the water?" and "What type of electrical outlets do they have?", and more. If there"s a language difference, try to pick up a few simple phrases, e.g., hello, thanks, etc.Remember there will be people who fit the image you create of the typical "Person from Country X" and those who do not. Clinging to stereotypes won"t help you to learn more about a new country and its people.Be open-minded and willing to learning. Ask questions. If you are going to a place where people speak a different language, consider taking a few courses in that language.Maintain a sense of humor. Knowing that the move will be a challenge, give yourself time. Don"t be hard on yourself. Don"t withdraw! Continue to experience the new culture. Travel within the country, and visit cultural events and locations, such as museums or historic sites.Build new friendships.Associate with positive people.Stay active, eat well, and get enough sleep.Bring a few touches of home with you, such as photos of favorite locations and family members, your favorite music, or favored knickknacks.Keep in touch with people at home by Skype, email, phone, postcards — whatever. This can give you some comfort while away, and it will help you to minimize reverse culture shock when you get back home.

CULTURE SHOCK

What Is Culture Shock?Culture shock can be described as the feeling of confusion and disorientation(迷茫)that one experiences when faced with a large number of new and unfamiliar people and situations. Many things contribute to it- smells, sounds, flavors, the very feeling of the air one is breathing. Of course, the natives" unfamiliar language and behavior contribute to it, too. People"s response to culture shock vary greatly, from excitement and energetic action to withdrawal, depression, physical illness, and hostility. A particular individual might react to culture shock one way one day and another the next. The notion of culture shock calls two useful points to mind. First, most people experience some degree of culture shock when they go to a new country, whether they admit it to themselves and others or not. Culture shock is more a product of the situation of being in a new culture than it is of the traveler"s personal character.Second, culture shock, like other kinds of “shock”, is normally transitory. It passes with time. Academic analysts(学术分析家) of the culture shock idea point out that the experience of culture shock need not be negative. While there may be some unhappiness and unpleasantness along with the confusion and disorientation, the confusion and disorientation are necessary steps in learning about a new culture. If everything in the new place is just like home, no learning will come from being there.

I found a case through internet, you can find more by yourself. My Most Offensive Case of Culture Shock To Date Posted March 24, 2011 by Spencer Smith Author: Spencer Smith LONDON — This Wednesday the London Program went out to see a West End performance of the well-received Clybourne Park. All the reviews had been excellent and I was excited to see a play focusing on the complexities of the issues surrounding race in America. It was horrendous. The most uncomfortable I have been since arriving in London. It really forced me to view the theatre experience of London from a new perspective. I have tried to analysis this specific experience from a number of different angles, but every one is just as disappointing as the previous.First, let me explain the play"s premise. Clybourne Park deals specifically with the complexities of race and housing. American playwright Bruce Norris wrote the play as a response to Lorraine Hansberry"s A Raisin in the Sun (1959), a beautiful masterpiece that follows the Younger family"s move into Chicago"s all-white Clybourne Park neighborhood and the discrimination they face, as well as the resulting drama created within the family. Norris" adaptation fictionalizes the events before and after the Younger family"s move into Clybourne Park. It is advertised as a witty satire and is raved as the “most hilarious performance of the year”. I, however, struggled with its hilarity, especially the audience"s reaction. The play begins in 1959 with a couple preparing to move out of their home in Clybourne Park. Russ, the husband, has drifted into depression after his son, returning from service in the Korean War, committed suicide. Russ is extremely hostile towards the community because he believes they ostracized his son, who while in war was accused of murdering innocent civilians. Bev, the wife, is a comical creation whose exaggerated housewife characterizations incite a great deal of laughter from the audience. Before long, a neighbor enters, accompanied by his deaf wife, and informs Russ and Bev their house has been sold to a black family. When he refers to them as “colored”, the neighborhood priest, also visiting, interjects, “I believe we use Negro” and the whole crowd erupts in laughter. The neighbor begs for Russ to sell the house to the church and prevent the family from moving in, out of fear that it will create a domino effect and the value of neighborhood will depreciate. At one point, the neighbor and priest sit down the black maid and her husband to ask them how they would feel about moving into the community. They dance around the issue of race and all the while the audience appears to find the whole scenario side-splitting. Russ, obviously caring little for the neighbor and the rest of the community, refuses. The neighbor does not cease and goes to the point of threatening to inform the black family about the suicide that occurred upstairs. This creates a volatile scene where Russ throws both the neighbor and priest out of the house. Mimicking a deaf person speaking the neighbor"s wife asks, “What happened” and the crowd again erupts in laughter.Sitting in the far back with Krystnell and being able to see the entire audience"s reaction was absolutely horrifying. With a crowd that was at least 95% white, this specific showing of Clybourne Park took the very real and disturbing issues of race in America and turned it into a twenty-first-century minstrel show. I am still struggling with how seemingly everyone in the theater could find such humor in blatant racism, American veteran"s discrimination and people with disabilities. It was the most offensive audience I have ever witnessed.I do not mean to totally diminish the play, just the British response to it. The second act is set in 2009 with the roles reversed. The actors are all playing new roles, and a white couple is attempting to move into the same house of a Clybourne Park neighborhood that has undergone years of gentrification and is recovering from crime and drug problems. The couple is wishing to demolish and build a new house, but is blocked by a neighborhood petition, presented by a local black couple. Again, they dance around the issue of race, telling some offensive and insulting jokes that send the audience rolling with laughter, until it all leads to another volatile climax.I can imagine reading the text in an Earlham classroom and getting a great deal out of it. There are excellent examples of symbolism and juxtaposition that provide a great deal of opportunities for reflection and analysis. Incessant laughter, however, does not strike me as the appropriate response. I would be more understanding if I thought their comic impressions of the play were balanced with some sort of reflection, but I revisited some of the reviews from newspapers like The Guardian and The Observer and they are all the same. They start with a line classifying it as a satire that “addresses the hypocrisy of race in America” or “shows little has changed concerning race in America.” However, that is the last mention of any sort of critical analysis. Every review goes on to rave about the hilarious characters and nature of the play. Although I have no idea, I cannot imagine this was Norris" intention when writing the play and adapting such a serious work as A Raisin in the Sun.I am curious if there is a cultural difference. The play first debuted in New York and I wonder how American audiences responded to it. Perhaps it addressed a matter more real and pressing for them. Unfortunately, I sense the response has more to do with demographic and class status, and I am sure that Broadway audiences are just as white and upper-middle class as the West End"s. If the experience did anything for me, it was the audience more than the play itself that showed me how prevalent racism still is amongst today"s “progressive” western societies.

Culture shock is an occupational disease for people who have been sudenly transplanted abroad.Like most ailments,it has its own symptoms and a cure. Culture shock is precipitated by the anxiety that results from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. Those signs include the thousand and one ways in which we orient ourselves to the situation of daily life:when to shanke hands and what to say when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to make purchases, when to accept and refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These signs, which may be words, estures, facial expressions,or customs, are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend on hundreds of these signs for our peace of mind and day-to-day efficiency, but we do not carry most at the level of conscious awareness. Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar signs are removed. No matter how broadminded or full of good will you may be, a series of supports have been knocked from under you, followed by a feeling of frustration when suffering from culture shock people first reject the environment which causes discomfort. The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad.lWhen foregners in a strange land get together to complain about the host country and its people, you can be sure tha tthaey are suffering from culture shock. Another phase of culture shock is regression. The home environment suddenly assumes a tremendous importance. To the forigner, everything becomes irrationally glorified .All the difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered. It usually thkes a trip home to bring one back to reality.

In what way can we cope with culture shock?

Many people who travel or live overseas experience culture shock. In the beginning the new encounter is perceived as exciting. But soon we feel a sense of dislocation and general unease. This is culture shock. The first step in coping with culture shock is to recognize its symptoms: feeling of discomfort, confusion, and withdrawal (such as spending excessive amounts of time alone or with only with our own kind and avoiding contact with locals) and having negative feelings about the people and culture of the new place. To fully cope with culture shock we must learn to adjust, in other words to accept the new surroundings and make a compromise between the old and the new cultures.

Culture shock has many stages. Each stage can be ongoing or appear only at certain times. The first stage is the incubation stage. In this first stage, the new arrival may feel euphoric and be pleased by all of the new things encountered. This time is called the “honeymoon” stage, as everything encountered is new and exciting. Afterwards, the second stage presents itself. A person may encounter some difficult times and crises in daily life. For example, communication difficulties may occur such as not being understood. In this stage, there may be feelings of discontent, impatience, anger, sadness, and feeling incompetence, this happens when a person is trying to adapt to a new culture that is very different from the culture of origin. Transition between the old methods and those of the new country is a difficult process and takes time to complete. During the transition, there can be strong feelings of dissatisfaction. The third stage is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. A new feeling of pleasure and sense of humor may be experienced. One may start to feel a certain psychological balance. The new arrival may not feel as lost and starts to have a feeling of direction. The individual is more familiar with the environment and wants to belong. This initiates an evaluation of the old ways versus those of the new. In the forth stage, the person realizes that the culture has good and bad things to offer. This stage can be one of double integration or triple integration depending on the number of cultures that the person has to process. This integration is accompanied by a more solid feeling of belonging. The person starts to define him/herself and establish goals for living. The fifth stage is the stage that is called the “re-entry shock..” this occurs when a return to the country of origin is made. One may fin that things are no longer the same. For example, some of the newly acquired customs are not in use in the old culture. These stages are present at different times and each person has their own way of reacting in the stages of culture shock. As a consequence, some stages will be longer and more difficult than others. Many factors contribute to the duration and effects of culture shock. For example, the individualu2019s state of mental health, type of personality, previous experiences, socio-economic conditions, familiarity with the language, family and/or social support systems, and level of education.

For example, the individual"s state of mental health, type of personality, previous experiences, socio-economic conditions, familiarity with the language, family and/or social support systems, and level of education.

求一篇题目是what is culture shock的作文

Culture shock refers to the anxiety and feelings (of surprise, disorientation, uncertainty, confusion, etc.) felt when people have to operate within a different and unknown cultural or social environment after leaving everything familiar behind and they have to find their way in a new culture that has a different way of life and a different mindset [1] such as in a foreign country. It grows out of the difficulties in assimilating the new culture, causing difficulty in knowing what is appropriate and what is not. This is often combined with a dislike for or even disgust (moral or aesthetical) with certain aspects of the new or different culture. Culture shock is a state of dis-ease, just like a disease. It has many different effects, time spans, and degrees of severity[9]. Many people are handicapped by its presence and don"t recognize what is bothering them. Culture shock symptoms are really hard to seclude.Culture shock is a subcategory of a more universal construct called transition shock. Transition shock is a state of loss and disorientation predicated by a change in one"s familiar environment which requires adjustment.

Topic:Explain culture shock and the four stages of adjustment with the help of the following outline. 1.The honeymoon 2.The crisis 3.The recovery 4.The adjustment By definition, culture shock is a feeling of confusion and anxiety caused by contact with another culture. In a broad sense,it doesn"t just refer to one"s reaction to a new country. It"s the feeling of anxiety and confusion when people experience situation that are very different from those they are accustomed to.And people have to adjust to the new environments. They usually go through the four stages of honeymoon, crisis, recovery and adjustment. For example, when I first came to Beijing,in the first week I was busy visiting places of interest and I was very excited. Then I began to find unpleasant things.Quite a few people are not very friendly to strangers, some very rude.As I felt lonely and disappointed,I became terribly homesick.Almost every day I phoned my parents. But I finally adjusted to the new environment.I went through all the four stages of adjustment.

how to avoid culture shockuff1f

Why do cultures clash? Culture clashes occur when we judge the behaviour of a person from another culture using our own values. For example, a British approach to time may be that there is never enough and so we use it carefully and make sure we don"t waste it. Another culture may see time as something they don"t need to control so strictly and see a flexible response to things as more useful. These two different approaches can quickly lead to clashes in a business setting. So how can I avoid culture clashes?Well, you can either choose to live the life of a recluse and avoid all contact with other people who are different to you u2026 Or you can look at raising awareness of your own culture, such as what values you have around things like time management and so on.By understanding your own preferences, you will be better prepared when you meet different ways of doing things. Also, keep an open mind, people have reasons to act the way they do u2013 find out what it is and find a way to work with it.How can I become more effective across cultures?Know self - This includes knowing about your own culture (national & regional) and knowing how you as an individual fit the national generalisation (are you typical?). In addition, other aspects to take into consideration are your professional culture (Legal, HR, Accountancy, etc.) and your organisational culture (hierarchical? task-driven? people-centred?).You can either choose to live the life of a recluse and avoid all contact with other people who are different to you u2026 Or you can look at raising awareness.Know others - This includes knowing the other culture or cultures you are working with. When you "know" them then you can begin to understand why they do what they do and think as they do. Part of this is of course the country background (history, language, customs, place in the world, etc.) but more importantly, it must take into account the ways and practices of doing business. This includes the general communication style (direct, indirect), the attitude towards issues involving the use of time as we mentioned it earlier, attitudes towards hierarchy, group or more individualist orientation preferences, attitude towards tasks vs. relationship orientation and how they deal with emotions in the workplace (freely and visible or unacceptable?) and finally the attitude towards rules and regulations, is it hard and fast (the law is the law regardless of circumstances) or is it much more dependent upon the context and prevailing circumstances?Taking people with you - Now you have the above you can begin to formulate a way forward that acknowledges the place you are coming from (self) and where the people you are working with are (others). Whose way is best? Ours? Theirs? A combination? Or neither? These are good questions to ask yourself. The key is - what is the objective? Once you have that clear you can work backwards from there to developing a change process that will be effective.Process check - A key point to keep in mind is to be aware of the "happy compromise". Do not use a notion of "fairness" to develop business processes u2013 only use ways that draw on the best that is on offer from all sides that will be effective whilst at the same time paying due respect on all sides. If you still opt to introduce "your" way after due consideration of all aspects of the situation ensure that you "sell" it into the various cultural contexts in a way that shows understanding and respect whilst at the same time providing a good inter-culturally aware learning and development plan specifically for it.If you are interested in trialling a demo of our revised Managing across Cultures eLearning module, then get in touch with us using the information below.

culture shock and education(文化冲击与教育)

For example, the individual"s state of mental health, type of personality, previous experiences, socio-economic conditions, familiarity with the language, family and/or social support systems, and level of education.
