这非常令人费解。环境怎么会来配合生命？行星的化学要素——水、岩石、空气——不会突变也不会繁殖，而突变和繁殖是达尔文主义者眼中所谓“配合”的关键。但是它确实具有维持生命所必须的特性。19世纪中叶，部分不列颠学者受布里奇沃特伯爵（Earl of Bridgewater）之托写了一系列书，宣称“万物的创生，明确地体现了上帝的力量、智慧和恩惠”——也就是说，想用科学的发现来证明上帝的智慧，亦即所谓的“自然神学”。1834年出版的一部布里奇沃特著作中，英国化学家William Prout宣称，接近冰点时水的膨胀就是神意的一例。 Henderson不准备向上帝让步，但是他也承认，要解释水这种明显的“配合”现象是不容易的，仍然没有更好的答案。他能说的只是“根据当前的假说和法则，无法对这些巧合作出任何解释。”假如这些现象能够被理解，他说，“那么将会是在未来，当我们对物质的特性有了更深入的了解之后。” Henderson之后一个多世纪的研究成果表明，水和生命间的关系比之前想像的更为融洽和复杂。但同时也显示这种关系可能并不是专有的——生命和水之间的这种特殊的和谐，可能只是达尔文进化论“适应创造可能”的又一杰出范例。以现代的观点来看，水绝不是一个被动的、衬托生命有机分子表演的背景。相反，它是一位积极的参与者。水分子间存在着一种脆弱的弱化学键网络，名为“氢键”，它能够把生物分子像织地毯一样“织”进液体分子里。生物分子和溶液的关系就像在跳一段互动的舞蹈。作为催化剂的蛋白质非常灵活，它能够改变形状，把反应导向正确的方向。蛋白质外形的改变会影响周围的水，使水起伏和晃动，而水的起伏和晃动同时又会给蛋白质注入“活力”。这种相互作用的微妙可以达到非常惊人的程度。举例来说，德国波鸿鲁尔大学和以色列魏茨曼科学研究所的研究人员发现，当一个蛋白质分子和目标分子（称为“酶作用物”）结合在一起并准备转运它时，结合点附近的水分子运动就会慢下来，会变得浓稠，就好像要把酶作用物固定在原位一样。氢键作用的变化和周围自由水分子的运动，会导致能量以及熵发生细微增减，从而控制和驱动大量精巧且具高度选择性的生化反应发生。 在这些生化反应中，既有水从角落和缝隙间被逐出，让位给酶作用物，酶和它的目标分子，亦即酶作用物之间的结合；也有新制造出来的蛋白质链折叠成外形紧凑的酶；既有把蛋白质组装成复杂的生物分子结构；也有把脂肪分子组装成细胞膜。这些反应都受益于水的浸泡，以及水在隔水（疏水）分子间诱发的吸附作用。 水分子还能作为附着在蛋白质表面的工具，扩展酶的势力范围，帮助它结合或转运小分子。从酶的通道中穿过的水分子链还扮演着“质子线”的角色，能够引导氢离子，允许细胞把氢原子搬运到新的位置或新的分子中，亦或积累和释放能够产生能量的氢离子浓度差异，就像山坡上利用水流转动的水车。穿过DNA双螺旋结构的水分子网络，任何细小的改变都可以影响DNA分子的弯曲程度，影响插入其中的蛋白质激活或关闭基因的方式。所有这一切都表明水在生命中所扮演的角色，比Henderson的评价更为错综复杂。但是水究竟具有多少独特性？生命对水的这种能力有多大的依赖性？水所扮演的某些角色，如疏水吸引力，其他溶剂也能够扮演：只要溶解的分子与溶剂的关联性不大，无论它们是什么，都会趋向于粘合在一起。而水线中氢离子的传导，虽然对地球生命来说十分重要，但是它的不可或缺性，对地外生化反应来说却不明显。 也可以这样问：假如只把水当成一种普通的液体，情况又将如何？北爱尔兰贝尔法斯特皇后大学的Ruth Lynden-Bell和新泽西普林斯顿大学的Pablo Debenedetti对所谓的“反事实水”模型进行了研究，这个模型所展示的，是使水展现出异常特点的核心特征——水中氢键的排列——在模型中，人们可以对它进行精细的调整，从而确定多大程度的调整是被允许的？多大程度的调整又会使水失去独特的属性？ 一种最简单的理论模型视氢键为单纯的静电作用：带有微量正电荷的氢原子，会和邻近氧原子中带有负电荷的“孤对”电子产生吸引力，电荷相互作用，形成一个四面体。在这种吸引力的支配下，分子间会形成一种特别的几何学排列方式，并在顶层控制着原子和分子间更为一般的吸引力，也就是“范德华力（van der Waals）”（又名“色散力”）。在构造简单的液体，如液氩或液态二氧化碳中，唯一能够阻止分子飞散蒸发的，就是这种力。Lynden-Bell和Debenedetti用计算机设计出了一个水的模型，在这个模型中，氢键的静电作用力（能够维持四面体的存在）和范德华力（这种力在所有方向上都是相同的）能够进行随意的改变。他们把这种假想中的东西戏称为“不是水（not-water）”。结果发现，水的异常特性并非只是作用力的程度问题。氢键的排列方式，和简单球状范德华力的排列方式——它们就像加农炮弹一样——明显是不相容的。在两种极端情况下，我们将得到两个最糟糕的世界：无论由哪种力支配，分子的排列都是无序的。换言之，水和缺乏氢键的液体有着质的不同，后者的分子只会相互碰撞。但是水分子并不是唯一拥有氢键的分子——氨，甚至氯化氢也有。区别在于水分子能够形成巨大的三维网络，因为它们的分子可以粘合成四面体，而别的氢键只能形成长链。氢键的三维网络是水结冰后密度变低的原因，而这是氨和氯化氢做不到的。这是水的独特之处。 但是水的几何结构呢？假如我们改变水分子弯曲的角度，让氢键形成不了完美的四面体，或者让弯曲的程度变大，水的独特属性是否会消失？Lynden-Bell和Debenedetti发现，在这种情况下，只要改变的程度不十分剧烈，水的某些异常特性依然存在，比如水在到达冰点前密度仍然会变大。“这些（几何学）参数拥有足够的宽容度，”Lynden-Bell说。要使水的独特属性消失并不容易，Debenedetti说。水的氢键结构也常被用以解释水中溶质的疏水吸引力。但是在审视了“不是水”氢键强度和弯曲角度的改变之后，Lynden-Bell、Debenedetti等人得出结论，疏水粒子之所以不溶于水（趋向于结团成块），主要是因为水分子太小，其间存在的能量足以为这些粒子“挖”出空间，而非氢键本身的原因。因此几乎很多小分子液体应该都能做到这一点。 公平地说，水在某些方面是独一无二的，但在另一些方面并非如此：它比较特殊，但并没有那么特殊。而且，它的独特属性并非都有助于生命——有些会造成明显的阻碍。其中之一就是，它太活跃。氧原子中的孤对电子能够吸引分子中带正电的部分，而它们也会破坏已经存在的氢键，并瓦解或重组分子，这就是所谓的“水解”。蛋白质链内氨基酸的结合要依靠肽键，但肽键中的碳原子容易受到这种攻击，因此通过水解，蛋白质可以被分解。糖分子链，如纤维素、淀粉之类的生物多糖复合物，也会遇到相似的情况。 “这对于今天的系统性生命体而言，并不是一个太大的问题，酶可以修补水带来的伤害，”应用分子演化基金会的化学家Steven Benner说。但是对于生命的起源而言，这非常重要，他说，生物分子的原型要在水中形成并维持，但是它们并没有酶的协助。“如果说水是上帝设计出来的完美生物质溶剂，那这样的设计无疑是糟糕的，”Benner说。 他认为，在原理上不能排除氨、甲酰胺（CHONH2），或液态烃——土卫六上大量存在的那些东西，也支持不同类型的生化反应。实验室和工业有机化学已经生产出大量非水溶剂（不是水的溶剂），这些东西通常有非常强的针对性，因为水过于活跃。Benner对土卫六烃海洋中存在疏水生命的可能性特别感兴趣。他和同伴最近进行了一些实验，想看看是否可以制造出一种“基因聚合物”——一种能够把信息编码进分子序列中的物质，就象DNA和RNA那样——并使之在此类液体中工作。 他们发现，一种名为聚醚的链状分子在摄氏-70度左右能够很好地溶解在液态丙烷（C3H8）中，这种分子的主干由碳和氧原子交替组成。Benner认为，聚醚在这样的溶剂中能够起到基因数据库的作用。但是土卫六的温度要低得多：它的烃海洋主要由甲烷（CH4）和乙烷（C2H6）组成，温度只有摄氏-178度左右。在这样的极端低温下，大部分聚醚不能溶解。Benner推断说，土卫六上的液态甲烷“太冷，以致于几乎无法溶解一切对生命有意义的物质。”但是他说，这并不是因为烃是一种糟糕的溶剂——只是因为液态水的温度更高，温度高的液体溶解性更好。“一个温暖的土卫六，”他说，“一个位于太阳系宜居带内，大约相当于火星位置的行星，可能会有一个内含丙烷、丁烷甚至戊烷的烃海洋。”这些溶剂在相应的温度下将保持液态，并能够溶解大量物质。 Benner认为另一种理想的水替代品是甲酰胺，它可以由一氧化碳和氨，或氰化氢和水合成——而这些简单分子在星际空间和外星环境中都能够找到。“甲酰胺的溶解力以及保持液态的温度范围和水非常相似（甚至可能更好），”Benner说：在一个大气压下，甲酰胺的溶点是摄氏2度，沸点是摄氏210度。而且它没有水那种破坏聚合物的倾向。Benner和他的同事们最近向我们展示，在含硼矿物的催化作用下，磷酸盐类能够在甲酰胺里与腺苷分子结合，形成磷酸腺苷，磷酸腺苷是RNA和DNA的基本材料。与之相反，水会破坏磷酸腺苷，使之难以形成核酸。 假如在宇宙中，水之外的溶剂确实能够为其他形式的生命起到相似的作用，那么地球上生命和水的这种亲密关系可能只是环境和生命相“配合”的极端机会主义式的反映。地球生命已经习惯了这种奇怪液体所提供的一切。我们可能在天体生物学中高估了水的重要性，而与此同时又在地球生物学中低估了水的意义和精巧作用。 确实，我们在地球上发现的每一种适应性，都会提升水在生命中的重要性。生命可以生活在地球深处炽热高压出产石油的岩缝里，生命可以生活在南极冰湖下。微生物能够在炙热干旱的阿塔卡马沙漠活下来，也能够在滚烫的深海火山热液口周围繁殖。生命能在浓度极高的盐水中生存，能够忍受高浓度的有毒重金属，也能够暴露在高离子辐射的外太空而不以为然。当我们以为没有一种有机体能够离开水进行新陈代谢的同时，微生物却能够适应重水中的生活，某些隔离酶在完全无水的环境下，也能或多或少地工作。以上这一切，都在试图让我们相信，一旦达尔文式的进化开始，生命几乎能够在所有环境中前进。 Lynden-Bell也赞同，我们不应该低估自然选择在各种环境中使生命得以维持的能力。“我个人相信，演化能够利用它所发现的环境，而且很有可能存在着与我们完全不同的演化场景，”她说。生命同时也能改造环境，使之与自身相配。温哥华不列颠哥伦比亚大学的Colin Goldblatt指出，如果以我们当前的视角来看，只有寒冷而潮湿的外星世界看起来才稍微那么宜居一点，那么宜居带究竟在哪里其实取决于行星的大气层内有什么：在地球上，二氧化碳（在一定程度上由生命守护着）使我们行星的温度维持在冰点以上。换而言之，是“居住地决定宜居性，”他说。因此，在我们确知生命存在之前，不能对水是否能够维持生命作出草率的判断。
