As we know ,English is one of the most popular languages in the world.So,we should try to learn it well .Because only we do that ,can we adapt the development condition of the world well and it"s good for our future.
Not only English should we learn well,but also other language if we have chance to do it.But we shouldn"t forgive our mother tongue,we should learn it well first!

Mr. Chairman, adjudicators, ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon.
The arrival of the year 2008 has brought with a near perfect opportunity to take a look back at the last one thousand years, assess man"s successes and failures, and look forward with our predictions of the third millennium.
Already this afternoon you"ve heard many assessments and you"ve heard a variety of predictions. A variety so vast, ranging from Lewis Carol"s depiction of celebratory life, to the Irish celebration of death. So vast a variety that it"s difficult to find any common ground amongst the contestants here today. Perhaps the only thing that we all share is that we are indeed discussing millennia, the old and the new and the turn of the millennium, and we"re all discussing it in the same language.
A few hundred years ago to have held an event like this it would have been imperative that we were all fluent in a number of different tongues, for the approach of combating the language barrier was simply to learn many different languages. Of course people back then had an ulterior motive: that was to ensure that different languages held their different societies or positions, or as King Charles V of Spain put it, “ I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men and German to my horse.”
Today our approach is somewhat different. Instead of trying to vastly spread our verbal ability across the board, we"ve chosen rather to focus it, concentrating on our ability to master one particular language, the English language. Time magazine recently suggested that by the turn of the millennium, English will be the Lingua Franca for one quarter of the world"s population. Already today sixty percents of the world"s television and radio broadcasts are produced and delivered in English. Seventy percents of the world"s mail addressed in English. And it is the language of choice for almost every bite of computer data sent across the globe.
But why English? There are no clear linguistic reasons for its suggested global dominance, certainly the grammar is complicated, the spelling peculiar and the pronunciation eccentric, to say the very least. One would need only look through the dictionary to find the vast list of amusing paradoxes in the English language—quicksand that works slowly, a boxing ring that is in fact square and a guinea pig that"s really neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. Doesn"t it seem odd that one can make amends but not one amend. Or go through the annals of history but not one annal. The reason, ladies and gentlemen, is simple. English is strange, but no where near as strange as some of our alternatives.
Perhaps I should give you a few idiomatic examples. In English we say “once in a blue moon”. The Italian choose instead “every death of a Pope”. Irish doesn"t like our “drop dead”, replacing it rather with the slightly more obscure “you should lie in the earth.” And if you wanted to tell someone off in Spanish our relatively obvious “go fly a kite” would be better served by the phrase “go fry asparagus”. English"s primary advantage is that of flexibility. On the one hand it has the largest vocabulary of all modern languages, allowing us, as its users, to say exactly what we want in exactly the words we choose to use. On the other, globalization has insured the introduction of a business English, a sort of trimmed down variety of the language we"ve all come to know and love.
It"s interesting to know that the simple list of just ten words, words like “a”, “and”, “have” and “the”, combined to form one quarter of all those ever used in modern communication. Perhaps the real test is: will the global adoption of English as a master language insure the eradication of any misunderstandings that happen today? The answer is not as simple. Russell Hoven once asked: “How many people speak the same language even when they speak the same language?” But one can only hope that our only aim and our only chance of insuring that we communicate effectively with each other is to make sure that we do speak one universal language. In a thousand years time Western clocks will hopefully have ticked onto the year 2999 and we can be assured that scientists, academics and futurists will convene, much like we"ve done today to look back at the third millenium and offer their predictions for the successes of the forth.
It"s impossible to imagine what they might say, impossible to imagine what technology they"ll have available or even which planet they"ll hold the meeting on. In fact, quite possibly the only thing we can say for sure is that they"ll be discussing the issues in one common universal language. And that will be the language of the third millennium. And that language without any doubt looks set to be English. Thank you.

It"s my pleasure to have this chnace to talk about the English language.English is becoming a universal language with the earth turning into a small village.Due to the development of the economy,the international communication depends much more on English language, especially when the internet is becoming one part of our life, English plays an important role in it.For most of the Chinese people, we have the opening-up policy to the outside world.With the entry into the WTO,we will have more and more opportunities to get into touch with different cultures from different countries.In order to promote the understanding, English becomes much more necessary.That is why we should learn English.
So, many students,now, spend more and more time in learning English. But they may have met some difficulties, for example, they find listening is too difficult to improve. Now, I would like to give you some suggestions on this:
First, you should practice listening as much as possible. It is said that practice makes perfect. You can listen to the radio, such as BBC, VOA and so on. Each time, you needn"t practice for a long time.
Second, you should choose some fancinating materials which you are interested in, so you wouldn"t feel bored when you are practising.
Third, you"d better choose the tapes which are not too difficult, you can add the difficulties day by day.
In one word, if you can stick to practise listening everyday, I think your listening ability will improve quickly.
I sincerely wish that every of us can master English so that we can have a bright future.And I am sure that we will make it.

We study English so as to make oral communications, so this order of importance of oral English study should be followed: Fluency, Accuracy, and Appropriateness. That is to say, we have to pay more attention to practical communicating ability instead of only laying emphasis on the grammatical correctness.
Try to find some partners practicing oral English together and English corner is a good place as where we may exchange English study experience, widen our sight and improve interest in English.
If English partners are not easy to get, then we have to create an English environment ourselves by speaking English to ourselves.
This method is very effective and easy to insist on--interpreting Chinese-English novels or books. First we read the Chinese parts and then try to interpret them into English and then compare our interpretation with the original versions in the novels or books so that we can find out the mistakes, shortcomings and progresses in our interpretation.
Retelling exercise: Retell some articles or English stories in our own words. If possible, we may read some English tongue twisters loudly and quickly with one or two cakes of candy in our mouth (just as the Chinese cross-talk actors do.) to train our oral cavity muscle and tongues suitable for English pronunciation.
Paying more attention to phrases and small words as one major shortcoming of Chinese English is that Chinese students tend to use big words in their oral language, but the idiomatic oral English is abundant with short, active and vivid phrases. And most of such phrases are made of small words.
Thinking in English.Oral English has its own features, but it is closely combined with other aspects of English, for example, writing may make oral English precise and accurate.

The Internet also provides a motivating environment for students to practice and publish their writing. English, as a most common used language, is often a hard bone for many non-native speakers. Looking around, you"ll find an interesting phenomenon that Chinese students can write good English or they can easily get a high TOEFL score, however, students from India can better use it in communication. Some of us often complain that although we have learned English for almost 10 years in school, we still find it difficult when we want to speak.
This doesn"t happen accidentally. It"s due to our learning approach which does not focus on application but only on grammar and vocabulary. We have too many exams to take in school, thus most students learn it only to pass the exam or to get a better grade. No wonder we"re weak in listening and speaking. We have too little chance to express ourselves in daily life.
So if we want to improve our real English level, there"s one straight way to go-----just practice it. Imagine we live abroad, a total English environment, what do we need? First of all, we need establish communication with others, thus we need listen and speak. The aim of listening is to understand others what they say, no matter what their accent is like. So the listening materials shouldn"t be confined to standard English. We can try various speed and various accents. One interesting way is to watch English movies, which is an interesting thing. And the other is to find chances to chat with others, which improves not only listening ability but also speaking ability.
