热点是指地球表面长期经历火山活动的地区。来自全波形层析成像结果显示,太平洋下方的超级地幔柱近垂直上升到地幔过渡带的底部，进入到上地幔 (French and Romanowicz, 2015)；来自前驱波和接收函数的结果显示，地幔柱似乎在部分区域已经穿过地幔过渡带，进入到上地幔中，不仅使地幔形成热和化学异常 (Yu et al., 2018; Kemp et al. 2019)，也可能将核幔边界的物质和能量输送到地表从而形成热点。经典的威尔逊-摩根理论认为，太平洋中的一些火山岛屿和海山具有线性分布特征以及喷发年龄顺序变化的现象。但位于太平洋的24个热点中，许多在近30Myrs有活动，这与该理论相矛盾。通过研究地幔过渡带的结构及其物质组分可为地幔柱上涌的动力学过程提供重要的约束，进而了解地幔柱与热点位置之间关系。 地幔过渡带是研究地幔对流和热循环的重要场所。在地幔过渡带，岩石性质因矿物相变发生变化，进而影响地幔对流以及上、下地幔物质热化学组成。矿物相变受地幔组分、地幔温度、压力以及地幔混合程度等因素共同影响。660-km间断面是地幔过渡带的底界面，同时也是上地幔与下地幔的分界面。该间断面在通常情况下由林伍德石相变占主导，但在高温时受石榴石相变强烈影响(Stixrude and Lithgow-Bertelloni, 2011)。林伍德石相变会阻挡地幔柱和俯冲板片通过地幔过渡带，而石榴石相变则起促进作用。因此，地幔过渡带的热化学状态信息可为认识地幔对流模式提供重要约束。地震前驱波（这里指PP、SS前驱波）携带地震台站与地震中间区域过渡带的信息（红色和蓝色路径；图1a），其走时和振幅分别对界面的深度和物理性质敏感。当前地震台站在大洋覆盖不足，因此前驱波成为研究全球地幔过渡带结构的重要手段。其中，P660P震相往往很难被观测到(图1b),这可能与PP和SS前驱波对地球内部的温度和化学成分具有不同敏感度有关，但具体的主导因素尚存有争议。 图1 PP和SS前驱波路径(a)和波形(b) (Waszek et al., 2021) 来自澳大利亚詹姆斯库克大学的Lauren Waszek及其国际合作者们通过对全球PP前驱波、SS前驱波与岩石矿物性质模拟的联合分析，并结合数据挖掘技术，揭示了全球地幔过渡带热化学状态。作者选取58217条SS前驱波数据和136512条PP前驱波数据共同约束全球地幔过渡带的性质。他们的结果证明SS和PP前驱波中来自410间断面的S410S和P410P反射信号以及SS前驱波中的S660S信号具有全球分布特征；而仅在四个区域（占全球总面积 5%）可以观测到可靠的P660P震相，其中三个区域都在太平洋地区（图2:#1,#2,#4）。结合S660S–S410S到时差和全球层析成像速度模型约束地幔过渡带厚度，发现这些区域的地幔过渡带厚度均小于全球平均值，表明其地幔过渡带温度较高。 图2 来自PP和SS前驱波观测的全球410-km和660-km间断面。（a）P660P出现的位置；（b）全球地幔过渡带厚度图(Waszek et al., 2021) 矿物模拟结果显示，地幔化学组分无论是平衡组合(equilibrium assemblage；EA)还是机械混合(mechanical mixtures；MM），都可以在SS和PP前驱波中观测到来自410-km间断面的反射信号以及SS前驱波中的S660S信号；只有在高温情况下，才能观测到P660P信号（图3a）。所以决定能否观测到P660P震相的是地幔温度而非地幔组分。因而，P660P震相也可作为“地幔温度计”来约束地幔热状态。联合地幔过渡带厚度和岩石矿物模拟可以推测：假设地幔组分是平衡组合，全球平均地幔潜温约为1730 50K，并且可以在全球约45%的区域都可以观测到P660P信号；而机械混合结果显示，全球平均地幔潜温约为1630 50K，可以在全球 14%区域观测到P660P信号。后者更接近实际观测（图3a），表明地幔是不均匀的，还未达到化学平衡。 图3 （a）基于地震学和岩石物理约束的全球地幔温度柱状图，黑色虚线以右区域可观测到P660P；（b）全球地幔过渡带温度图(Waszek et al., 2021) P660P震相的出现是由于在高温情况下（地幔潜温大于1800K）660-km间断面结构由石榴石相变主导。实际观测显示，这种情况目前只发生在零星的地幔过渡带区域，特别是在热点聚集分布的太平洋地区。从地幔过渡带温度图上可以看到，北太平洋省（North Pacific Province）和南太平洋省（South Pacific Province）两大高温地区被正常温度的中太平洋带（Central Pacific Belt）隔开（图3b）。中太平洋带包含太平洋超级地幔柱，而近一半的太平洋热点都分布在北太平洋省和南太平洋省的边缘。这表明，地幔柱并不能直接垂直通过地幔过渡带。如果林伍德石相变起主导作用，660-km间断面会阻碍地幔柱穿过地幔过渡带，使其在过渡带底部水平摊开。由于热对流不稳定性增加，非常高温的物质（>1800K）在这些摊开区域边缘会进一步上升，从而在地表形成热点。这一结果支持分层地幔对流模型。660-km间断面作为动态的屏障阻挡热物质上升到上地幔，会导致地幔过渡带和中地幔温度比预想的高，地幔的混合程度也相应更低。这对了解地幔热循环和物质循环有重要意义。该项研究还表明，需联合不同地震震相以获取更多的地球深部物质和状态信息。 主要参考文献（上下滑动查看） Courtillot V, Davaille A, Besse J, et al.
