我自学英语已经有些年头了。平时在英语阅读过程中也遇到过一些如标题所述的句子。这类似易实难、令不少英语学习者感到迷惑的句子，往往是英语本身的一些特点所造成的。我在这里对这类句子造成理解障碍的原因做一些分析，希望能为学英语的朋友带来一些帮助，和大家相互学习。形容词短语 例：The true to life ending, without resolution or growth or development, might work on a stage, however, it is contrary to everything a novel should do.(王长喜主编《大学英语六级考试读美文记单词》，中国社会出版社) 这是个复合句，这比较容易看出来。但是这个句子的主语是什么？ 我第一次遇到这个句子，就把the true 当成了主语，因为我知道形容词前加the 相当于名词。true是形容词，前面加the 当然说得过去。可是the true to life ending 又是什么意思？看不懂。是不是the true to life？什么意思？反映生活的真实？完全不知所云，好像也不对。那就应该是life，后面的ending是分词，life ending就是生命终结的意思。可是前面的the true to又该怎么解释？后来一看后面的难句讲解，才知道真正的主语是ending， true to sth是一个短语，意思是“忠实于”，那么true to life修饰ending，意思就是“逼真的结尾”，ending是名词。全句的意思是：结尾虽逼真但没有任何结局或发展，这在舞台上是行得通的，但却与小说中应当使用的手法背道而驰。 我没有看出true to life是一个形容词短语，所以看不懂这句话。这说明，语法掌握得不够扎实，是造成理解障碍的原因之一。
