I know where the People Road is. 我知道人民路在哪里。这种东西没有严格的翻译，你可以说 Renmin Road/avenue也可以把人民 翻译成people，目前我国没有统一的标准，可能各个城市会有自己的标准。如果想多了解你可以看下文我国街道名称的英译方法，目前大体上有三大类：一是“汉语拼音法”，二是“音意结合法”，三是“全盘意译法”。 所谓“汉语拼音法”，就象联合国教科文组织早已通过的中国专有名词的翻译采用汉语拼音方案那样，用汉语拼音方案来处理我国街道名称的英译。例如：“亮马河南路”英译为 Liangmahe Nanlu ，“ 东直门外大街 ”英译为Dongzhimenwai Dajie，“北十九道街”英译为 Beishijiudao Jie，“沙面大街”英译为 Shamian Dajie,等等。有的还将每一个汉字单独译为一个词，如：“光华路”译为 Guang Hua Lu。 所谓“音意结合法”，是指将专名部分作音译处理，通名部分作意译处理。这是比较流行的译法。象将“城中路”译为 Chengzhong Road， “ 民主街 ”译成 Minzhu Street这样的例子，已是众所周知，不必多举了。 问题是， 事情并没有这么简单。我们的祖宗，在“路”、“街”之前，还设有“大、干、正”，还有“东、西、南、北”，还有“上、中、下”，还有“前、后、内、外”，还有“支、横、新、旧”，还有“一、二、三、四．．．．．．”等等，不一而足。有的则称“路”为“道”。 有人将“大道”、“大街”，一时译为main Road ,main Street，一时统译为 Avenue，或译为法式的 Boulevard，有时则视“大”如不见，干脆译为 Road 和 Street了事。如“沙面大街”只译为Shamian Street。 至于对“东、西、南、北、中”的处理，则呈“三足鼎立”之势，把这些方位词分别放在前、中、后的位置上，如：同一条“天宁南路”就有 South Tianning Road,Tianning South Road 和 Tianning Road South，分别都有来自外国或香港地区的出处依据。然而，已经逐渐有了将“东、西、南、北、中”并入专名部分去的倾向，如：将“解放中路”译为Jiefangzhong Road。 而对“前、后、内、外”，“上、下”，“支、新”的处理，也是“各显风骚”，“自树一帜”，使人眼花缭乱。如“水西门外江东门新街”译为 “ New Street,Jiangdong Gate ,Outside Shuixi Gate”，有的则将“外”译为“Outer”。 谈到“里、巷、弄”，似乎不大好弄。辞典和一些译例表明，这三者均可译成或Lane或Alley或Alleyway。在1981年出版的我国第一部《中国电话号码簿》“安徽”一章中，同是合肥市的巷，有译成Alley的，如“向阳一巷”译为 Xiangyang Alley No.1，也有拼音化的，如“大众巷”译成Dazhong Xiang．在幅页广大，人口众多的我国，与这三者表意相同的，还有“条”、“胡同”等等，意译也同上，各显“神通”。 所谓“全盘意译法”，顾名思义，是彻底的意译法。如：“五一路”译为“May 1st Road”，“天坛路”译为“Temple of Heaven Road”，“珠江路”译为“ Pearl River Road”，甚至将“经四纬六路”译为“Longitude 4 Latitude 6 Road”， 等等。这种方法，毕竟不多，兹不详表。 （2）外国人对我国街道名称的英译 正当国人对街道名称的英译呈五花八门之势，起“春秋战国”之争时，外国人对我国街道名称的英译却悄悄地趋向于“汉语拼音”式的规范化。且不说是我们应了“人生识（英文）字糊涂始”这句话呢，抑或外国人毕竟是“旁观者清”，还是实在一点看看英文老祖宗的后代和使用或流行英语的国家的人是怎样翻译我国的街道名称吧。 此事不难。让我们看一看外国驻华使领馆地址的英译，就应有所启发。且看：英国驻华使馆所在的“光华路”是Guang Hua Lu； 美国、新加坡驻华使馆所在的“建国门外秀水北街“是Xiushui Bei Jie，Jian Guo Men Wai； 加拿大、马来西亚、澳大利亚驻华使馆所在的“东直门外大街”是Dongzhimenwai Dajie； 挪威驻华使馆所在的“三里屯东一街”是Dongyi Jie , San Li Tun； 荷兰驻华使馆所在的“亮马河南路”就是Liangmahe Nanlu； 罗马尼亚驻华使馆所在的“日坛路东二街”则干脆为Ri Tan Lu Dong Er Jie； 有人可能怀疑这是中方编印使馆地址时的译文。我们可以看看外国驻华外交官的“原始译作”：澳大利亚驻华使馆签证部1987年12月15日开具的一份证明书上“北京东直门外大街15号”的英译是“15 Dongzhimenwai ,Beijing”。 其时并未将“大街”译出，后来就补译成Dajie， 故至今仍在其官员名片及签证通知等文件上将“东直门外大街”译为“Dongzhimenwai Dajie”。 日本国驻广州总领事馆所在的“环市东路”在该国领事官的名片上的英文是 Huanshi Donglu。 （3）外国人对其本国街道名称的英译 外国人在处理本国街道名称的英译时，是如何进行的呢？ 英语国家的街道名称，本身就是英语， 没有英译的问题。 法文的街道单词有Rue , Avenue和Boulevard 等，英译时照用这几个词不误，而没有考虑要改成对应 的 Road或Street或什么的。 马来文中的街道称Jalan，马来西亚的街道名称在英译 时并没有应否改译为Road或Street的争论。 意大利的街道称Via， 意大利的街道名称在英译时理直气壮地用Via，并没有人说这是贻笑外人或贻误外人。 德文的“街道”原写成Straβe，考虑到英译时英文打字机没有倒数第二个字母那样的字体，德国人宁愿用两个“S”代之而坚持用德式的街道单词，写成Strasse， 似乎并没有人讥笑那是“德式洋径滨英语”。 连我们一衣带水的近邻日本，在街道名称的英译上也没有我们那么复杂，其街巷单词，有借用汉字表示的“町”和“丁目”，读如 MACHI 和CHOME，日本人英译其街道名称时，也毫不犹豫地“照用Machi和Chome可也”，并无研讨是否要改译成Road或Street和Lane或Alley。 在词序方面， 不少外国人还坚持保留其本国文化固有的语序。如法国人、马来西亚人、意大利人坚持通名前置法，即将Rue、Jalan、Via放在专名部分的前边，日本人则保留通名后置法。然而，并没有人因为他们不用Road和Street而说他们译得不地道。 看来，这里有一个保留本族语言的文化传统的问题。 （4）我国街道名称英译的趋向 街道名称之所以要翻译，是为了方便交流，再具体一点说，主要是方便依名寻街和通讯连系，而不是用于炫耀外文的研究和精通。 说到依名寻街， 外国人在北京要问“东直门外大街” 怎么走， 我看用Dongzhimenwai Dajie要比Outer Dongzhimen Main Street 要立竿见影得多。 对Dongzhimenwai Dajie，不管你懂英语与否，无论士农工商，卖冰棍的，拉大车的，男女老少，都知其意。 这不是一种偷懒的作法，而是一种讲求实效的方法。至于通讯联系，邮递员最有发言权。用“汉语拼音法”英译的街道名称，在小学学过汉语拼音，在中学继续学普通话的邮递员都能看懂，比那一街多译的“音意结合法”容易多了，更不用说那种“全盘意译法”了。 其实，我国街道名称英译已经有一种逐渐走向“汉语拼音化”的趋向了。早在1981年，我国出版第一部中英对照的《中国电话号码簿》时，对街道名称的英译大体上可分两大类：一类是“汉语拼音法”，另一类是“音意结合法”（包括极少量的“全盘意译法”）。 当时在该书出现的省、直辖市、自治区共有29个（ 台湾省除外，海南省未建 ），用“汉语拼音法”英译街道名称的省、市、 自治区有 16个，分别是北京、福建、甘肃、广东、广西、黑龙江、湖南、江西、吉林、辽宁、青海、山西、四川、天津、云南和浙江，而出现在其他13个省、市、自治区的街道名称则主要用“音意结合法”译成英文。但是，其中也有两法“交叉”的情况。如浙江部分绍兴的街道名称是用“音意结合法”翻译，而江苏部分徐州的街道名称用“汉语拼音法”英译。 （5）并非结论的结语 街道名称的英译，是不少人认为易而为之，却又是不少人总觉得不尽人意的一项工作。仅靠某个权威人士出来讲话，或光发表几篇文章是不能解决问题的。当然，人们，特别是初涉译坛的人，无疑可以从一些体会文章中得到启迪，举一反三地动手译来。 我们应当注意“汉语拼音化”的趋向。在“路、街、巷”等容易找出对应的英语Road、Street、Lane之时，不妨意译这些通名部分，而不妨把“前、后、左、右、上、中、下”等字归到专名部分以“汉语拼音法”处之。如“工农北路”可以译作Gongnongbei Road，因为，人们往往在实际应用中，汉语也会把“工农北路5号”略为“工农北5号”，而邮递员也心知肚明。同样，“中山一路”可译成Zhongshanyi Road。 然而，如果要达到街道名称英译的统一、规范，推行“汉语拼音法”无疑是“快、好、省”的，英语老祖宗的后代，以英语为母语的外交官和外国友人，都这样译了，我们还怕什么“不地道”！ 之所以说“并非结论的结语”，是因为个人的意见不能作为使之规范的结论。谁可以作结论呢？各地的地名委员会可为之。 由地名委员会牵头，翻译组织，邮电、工商、文史等部门参与，广泛讨论研究定案，再经一定的法律程序，是可为的.一经确定，就应编辑印发街道名称英中对照索引资料，象《香港街道地方指南》中的“街道索引表”那样，既有中英索引，又有英中索引，岂不统一、规范？！ 其实，采用汉语拼音方案拼写中国地名，这已经是1977年第三届联合国地名标准化会议通过，成为国际标准的。这似乎已经是结论了！参考资料：浅谈我国街道名称的英译
