forbid不许,禁止做某事,不同的是forbid后面接to即forbidsbtodosth,ban不接to。

Her refusal to give up her seat on a bus to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama, resulted in a city-wide boycott of the bus company and stirred the civil rights movement across the nation. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks (the "mother of the Civil Rights Movement") refused to get up out of her seat on a public bus to make room for white passengers. Rosa was arrested, tried, and convicted for disorderly conduct and violating a local ordinance. After word of this incident reached the black community, 50 African-American leaders gathered and organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott to protest the segregation of blacks and whites on public buses. The boycott lasted for 382 days (1956 was a leap year), until the local ordinance segregating African-Americans and whites on public buses was lifted. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The most important step forward was in Montgomery, Alabama, where longtime NAACP activists Rosa Parks and Edgar Nixon prevailed on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956. Activists and church leaders in other communities, such as Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had used the boycott in recent years, although those efforts often withered away after a few days. In Montgomery, on the other hand, the Montgomery Improvement Association created to lead the boycott managed to keep the boycott going for over a year until a federal court order required Montgomery to desegregate its buses. The success in Montgomery made King a nationally known figure and triggered other bus boycotts, such as the highly successful Tallahassee, Florida boycott of 1956-1957.

同理,diesel(柴油机)是德国发明家Diesel发明的,mackintosh(风雨衣)是苏格兰发明家Mackintosh发明的,bloomers(布鲁姆衣服)是由纽约Bloomers夫人发明的。   有些词来源于神话人物名,如cherub(天真可爱的男童)来源于Cherub(小天使),protean(千变万化的)来源于有许多化身并能作预言的海神Proteus。 有些词来源于文学作品中的人物名,如quixotic(极其浪漫的,理想主义的,骑士气派的)来自于塞万提斯的作品《唐. 吉诃德);sadism(<对异性>残暴色情狂)来源于Count Donation(侯爵)de Sade;robot(机器人)来自于Karel Capek的剧本RUR中的机器怪物Robot。   2.地名   有许多表示产品、东西或材料的词来自于其原产地的地名,如china(瓷器)来自瓷都China(中国),afghan(一种织毯)原产于Afghanistan(阿富汗),jersey(毛衣)产于美国的Jersey Island(泽西岛),champagne(香槟酒)原产于法国的Champagne(香槟),rubgy(橄榄球)起源于曾以橄榄球闻名的英国Rugby(拉格比)学校。   3. Bibbit(一个只关心事业和职位,只关注文艺和文化的人)源于Sinclair Lewis的小说Bibbit(《巴比特》)。   4.商标名   nylon(尼龙),orlon(奥纶),daron(的确良,达可纶),rayon(人造丝,雷荣)等词原来都是商标名,现在用来指这种纤维材料。再如:frisbee(飞盘),deepfreeze(冷藏箱,电冰箱),Omega(香烟名),xerox(复印机)等。 这些词还可以带后缀:-ic,-an, -al, -ist, -ese, -ish, -esque构成形容词,如colossal(巨大的),irenic(促进和平的),stentorian(声音洪亮的),Micawberish(幻想突然走运的),picaresque(<经历等>传奇式流浪冒险的)等;   还可加后缀-ism, -(i)ne,-age,-ade,-ia, -ity, -ry构成名词:solecism(文理不通),morphine(吗啡),sabotage(怠工),pasquinade(讽刺诗),Babbitry(庸俗的实业家性格,节俭作风),magnolia(木兰)等。 I want to be TV"s czar of script and grammar.(我想成为电视剧本和文理上的沙皇。)   Churchill, a bent Pickwick in blue uniform, looked up at him with majestic good humor, much older, more dignified, moren assured. It is with procrustean thoroughness that the Soviet government sequelches all dissent.(正是普罗克拉提斯般彻底性使得苏联政府压制了所有不同意见人士。)

Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family"s long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family. In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank.In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure. At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement. On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

I am pleasant to be here to give a speech here. Today, I am going to introduce you a bit about seals.First, let us have a look at these sweet, little creatures. Aren"t they cute? However, do you know that in last year"s commercial hunt of seals in Canada, more than 217 thousand of seals were killed? 99.8% of them were not even 3 months old. In 2009, 280 thousand of 2-month-old seals which had just started to molt were hunted and killed. Ironically, in Canada, hunting seals is legal and there are about 10 thousand of families relying on it to earn a living in the east side of Canada. Every year"s spring is the right season for hunting seals.Humans hunt down seals brutally mostly for obtaining some insignificant things such as sealskins, seal flesh, seal oils. Please protect and save these poor creatures which are in imminent danger with our hands. If we all start doing this togthether, these cruel and immoral hunts of seals can definitely be boycotted.

Our team"s topic is "fastfood"As the world develops, people"s foodsteps become faster and faster. So fastfood quickly made its way into our lives. You can see KFCs and McDonnalds everywhere. To some people, fastfood is even an indespensible part of life.First, we discussed its pros and cons.Surely, fastfood brough us convinience. It saved us from the big cost of energy and time of cooking. In a fastfood restaurant, there are all kinds of ready-made delicious food. And the time saved by fastfood, can be put into more important things. In this case, fastfood did a lot for human society"s development. But there is also some problems which we cannot simply avoid. The most notable one is the problem of health. Fastfood is usually fried or heavy or with very high calories. If we eat it too often, it will not only lead to fatness but also various kinds of disease. The fact that threats us more is that for higher benefit, some of the restaurants abuse hormone. If we eat that kind of food, hormone will store up in our body. It"s very harmful, and may lead to cancer! After an analysis, we concluded that to solve this problem, we have only to commence with the disadvantage but not to rejet it blindly. To achieve that, the team members raised following utterances1, Fully notice the harm of fastfood, and not take it as something popular to practice.2, Reduce it.3, The government should make law to restrict the fastfood industry to prevent utterance.4, Pay attention to your diet. Add more vegetables and fruits when eating fastfood.

A meaningful life(有意义的人生)第一部分The death of an angel of animal rights activism does not rate with that of a drugged-out rock star.So when Henry Spira died of cancer in September 1998, his death passed without notice, apart from a brief obituary in The New York Times. Yet Henry Spiral life tells us something important, not only about the modern animal movement, but about the possibility of an individual making a difference in the modern world. I first met Henry when he turned up at an adult education seminar I was giving at New York University. I offered a course on "Animal Liberation" that attracted about 20 students. One student was an unusual specimen, outside the regular aesthetic of an "animal person".His clothes were untidy, and his hair uncombed. His language was so blunt and earthy that at times I thought I was listening to an assassin from a violent mob. Yet, I couldn"t help feeling intrigued with his direct way of speaking and his solemn, secular oath to help animals in need. I left New York soon after that, but one day got a call from Henry. He talked with me about his work. I knew that for over a century, the animal rights movement had been putting out graphic brochures, leaflets, and audio propaganda, alerting people to the dreadful experiments on animals. But in all that time, the number of animals used in experiments had risen from a small batch of a few hundred to more than 30 million. No activist had managed to stop a single experiment or improve the lives of animals living in tiny, constricted enclosures. Henry changed that. One of his earliest campaigns permanently closed down a laboratory conducting experiments with toxic vapor on about 60 rabbits. Following that success Henry rapidly moved on to bigger targets. He laid siege to Revlon over their use of rabbits to test cosmetics for potential eye damage and exerted enough pressure to persuade them to put $750000 into the search for alternatives. Having seen the boycott that Revlon had narrowly averted and being afraid of incurring similar wrath Avon Bristol-Myers and other major cosmetics corporations soon followed suit. Though it took 10 years for the research to achieve results it was largely Henry"s public and judicious watchdog efforts that brought so many cosmetics corporations to where they now truthfully state their products are not tested on animals. From decades spent working on the side of the weak and oppressed Henry became efficient at masterminding campaigns. His victory over Revlon didn"t require wealth legislators or the help of big governments. He learned how to build public awareness campaigns how to shape malpractice lawsuits to successfully sue large companies and how to build committed groups of supporters for the cause. We often assume that society has become too big and too bureaucratic for individuals to make a difference. How could one individual however humane and passionate possibly bring about change in the face of powerful global corporations ministerial indifference and complicated parliamentary rules? Henry"s life was dedicated to the cause of preventing suffering of innocent helpless animals especially those used in research. He didn"t stand on the sidelines or try to get revenge for the suffering he observed. Henry was practical. He acted. He appealed to the public and created publicity kits to help common people become activists. On April 21 1996 I sent Henry a fax telling him I was thinking about writing a book to chronicle his life and work. I asked whether I could stay with him for a few days in June to talk about it.1996年4月21日,我给亨利发了一份传真,告诉他我正在考虑写一本记录其生平和事业的书。 Henry called that evening. He said he"d really like me to write the book but he wasn"t sure he was still going to be around in late June. He explained that he"d been diagnosed with cancer and asked whether I could come earlier. I was in New York six days later. Henry had lost a lot of weight and lacked the energy I was used to seeing in him. His life expectancy was a matter of months. Death seemed to be stalking him.6天后我就到了纽约。 The most remarkable thing about Henry though was the total absence of any sign of depression. Life had been good he said refusing to hear my sympathy and condolences. He said he"d done what he wanted to do and enjoyed it a lot. Why should he be depressed? Henry"s life did not terminate in the time his doctors predicted. For the next two years he kept working helping develop the material I needed for the book through interviews and questionnaires. When I began writing I never thought Henry would see a completed draft but he lived to see the book on sale in a New York bookstore. Then within a week wearing his favorite striped pajamas he died亨利的生命并没有像医生预言的那么快终止。 One essential mark of living well is to be satisfied with one"s accomplishments when taking a retrospective look at life and to be able to accept death and face infinity calmly. Henry"s life seemed to lack many of the things that most of us take for granted as essential to a good life. He never married or had a long-term live-in relationship. He had no children or successors. He never went to concerts to the theater or to fine restaurants. He didn"t bring antibiotics to the needy or vaccinate the poor. He was never called a hero like the caped crusaders of our comic books. There is no fancy stone for him at the cemetery after his death. He just cared for the weakest creatures in his society. What gave Henry Spira"s life depth and purpose? What did he  and others  find meaningful in the way he lived his life?

martin luther king

简介:Dr. Martin Luther King Day Third Monday in January "We will not resort to violence. We will not degrade ourselves with hatred. Love will not be returned with hate." ——Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Click here to listen to the famous speech "I Have a Dream," delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 23, 1963. It was December, 1955, and Martin Luther King, Jr. had just received his doctorate degree in theology(神学). He had moved to Montgomery( 蒙哥马利), Alabama to preach at a Baptist church. He saw there, as in many other southern states, that African-Americans had to ride in the back of public buses. Dr. King knew that this law violated the rights of every African-American. He organized and led a boycott(联合抵制)of the public buses in the city of Montgomery. Any person, black or white, who was against segregation(种族隔离)refused to use public transportation. Those people who boycotted were threatened or attacked by other people, or even arrested or jailed by the police. After 382 Days of boycotting the bus system, the Supreme Court(最高法院)declared that the Alabama state segregation law was unconstitutional. African-Americans were not only segregated on buses throughout the south. Equal housing was denied to them, and seating in many hotels and restaurants was refused. In 1957, Dr. King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference(南 方基督教领导会议)and moved back to his home town of Atlanta, Georgia. This was the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement(民权运动). In the years following, he continued to organize non-violent protests against unequal treatment of African-American people. His philosophy remained peaceful, and he constantly reminded his followers that their fight would be victorious if they did not resort to bloodshed(流血). Nonetheless(尽管如此), he and his demonstrators were often threatened and attacked. Demonstrations which began peacefully often ended up in violence, and he and many others were often arrested. On August 23, 1963, a crowd of more than 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C. and marched to the Capitol Building(国会大厦)to support the passing of laws that guaranteed every American equal civil rights. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was at the front of the "March on Washington." On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial(林肯纪念堂)that day, Dr. King delivered a speech that was later entitled "I Have a Dream." The March was one of the largest gatherings of black and white people that the nation"s capital had ever seen... and no violence occurred. One year later, the Civil Rights Act(民权法案)of 1964 was passed. It was not the first law of civil rights for Americans, but it was the most thorough and effective. The act guaranteed equal rights in housing, public facilities, voting and public schools. Everyone would have impartial hearings(申诉的机会)and jury trials. A civil rights commission would ensure that these laws were enforced. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and thousands of others now knew that they had not struggled in vain(徒劳). In the same year Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize for leading non-violent demonstrations. In 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated while he was leading a workers" strike in Memphis, Tennessee. White people and black people who had worked so hard for peace and civil rights were shocked and angry. The world grieved the loss of this man of peace. The Making of a Holiday Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."s death did not slow the Civil Rights Movement. Black and white people continued to fight for freedom and equality. Coretta Scott King is the widow of the civil rights leader. In 1970, she established the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center in Atlanta, Georgia. This "living memorial" consists of his boyhood home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King is buried. On Monday, January 20, 1986, in cities and towns across the country people celebrated the first official Martin Luther King Day, the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American. A ceremony which took place at an old railroad depot(铁路仓储)in Atlanta Georgia was especially emotional. Hundreds had gathered to sing and to march. Many were the same people who, in 1965, had marched for fifty miles between two cities in the state of Alabama to protest segregation and discrimination of black Americans. All through the 1980"s, controversy surrounded the idea of a Martin Luther King Day. Congressmen and citizens had petitioned(请求)the President to make January 15, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."s birthday, a federal holiday. Others wanted to make the holiday on the day he died, while some people did not want to have any holiday at all. January 15 had been observed as a public holiday for many years in 27 states and Washington, D.C. Finally, in 1986, President Ronald Reagan declared the third Monday in January a federal legal holiday commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King"s birthday. Schools, offices and federal agencies are closed for the holiday. On Monday there are quiet memorial services as well as elaborate ceremonies in honor of Dr. King. On the preceding Sunday, ministers of all religions give special sermons(布道)reminding everyone of Dr. King"s lifelong work for peace. All weekend, popular radio stations play songs and speeches that tell the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Television channels broadcast special programs with filmed highlights of Dr. King"s life and times
