English English 和American English已被英国人承认是存在的，而且英国人也在学习使用比较简单化的American English。 其实，不单是语法结构方面如此，甚至单词的使用也有这样的倾向。这是说，在"英式英语"和"美式英语"中，假若是用不同的词汇表达同一个意思的，那么，使用"美式英语"的人远较使用"英式英语"者多。 笔者曾对一些用词作过研究，藉此判别上述这种趋势是否普遍存在，结果是肯定的。根据一些英美人士所作的调查，在日常应用的词汇中，"英式英语"和"美式英语"各有表达用语的大约有一千个，其中通用的占了大部分。但所谓"通用"，其实是指英国人采纳了美国人的用词而已。在英、美两国本土以外的地区，使用英文的人习惯了"美式英语"而少用"英式英语"者亦占了大多数。 以下举一些例子说明上述情况的表现。 antenna，aerial（前者为"美式英语"，后者为"英式英语"，下同）--泛指无线电上使用的"天线"，但antenna远比aerial（或aerial wire）流行。 apartment，flat--指大厦中的住宅单位，前者也被译为"（住宅）公寓"。不过，东南亚地区目前流行用"座"来表达，故使用flat的机会较多。 ash一can，dust一bin--指垃圾箱。在美式英语中，含有同等词义的还有garbage can和junk一heap，但英式英语则只有dust一bin（或dust-bin）.香港目前多用dustbin。但废纸篓的两种称呼分别是waste一basket和waste一paper basket，流行度则似乎相等。 automobile. motor一car--汽车。美式英语很多时更简为auto，如"车祸"即称为auto accident。两个字的使用度似乎相差不大。 baggage， luggage一一行李。这两个字都是总称，故此不能说a ba-ggage（或luggage），而应说a piece of baggage（或luggage）， twopieces of baggage等。流行度好像没有多大差别，但要注意：当美国人用luggage的时候，一般是指大的皮箱或皮包。美国人说baggage car（行李车）英国人则说luggage van。 bank一bill，bank一note…纸币，钞票。Bank-bill是美国人的钞票，但是英国人却用来指"银行与银行之间的汇票"，以bank一note较为流行。campus， school grounds---校园，学校场地。由于美国学上运动近年甚为蓬勃，故此campus一字常见应用，school一grounds则罕有所闻。campus所指的范围包括了整个学校（多指大学）的场地，而非单指花园、操场等开阔的地方。例如campus activities是指大学的"校内活动"，campus building是大学内的建筑群等等。 canned goods， tinned goods 罐头食物。can和tin是美式英语和英式英语中的同义词，均指保藏预制食物的罐头，tin有时更被音译为："听"。这两个字同时亦可以作动词使用，解作"把食物装罐"。在使用上,canned goods比tinned goods流行。 dePartment store， stores---百货公司。美国人口中的store，相当于英国人的 shop。百货公司一般规模较普通商店大，分为若干部门(dePar-tment)，故称为 departmentstore是很贴切的。这个用词在英国也逐渐流行，代替了英国沿用的 stores。 drawers， Pants——内裤。这两个字的用法应特别留意。Pants在英国指内裤，但在美国却是长裤。(在英国，长裤为 trousers。)所以，当一位外国人说 Pants的时候，你要弄清楚他究竟是英国人还是美国人，不要把内裤变成了长裤。 editorial， Leading article———社论。英式英语中除了leading article外， Leader一字也可用来指社论。但现时editorial用得最多，甚至香港的《南华早报》(South China Morning Post)也用 editorial来指其社论。 gasoline， petrol——汽油。 gasoline有时也写作 gasoline，口语上更可简写为 gas。汽油站是gas Station(＝英 Petrol station)，也可说gasoline station。但是， gasoline bomb(汽油弹)却不能说是 gas bomb。 long—distance call， trunk call一一—长途电话。美式英语的 Iong—distance call词义一看便明，远胜于英式英语的trunk call，自然被多数采用。 overcoat， great coat——大衣，大氅。两字的通用度差不多，但overcoat似乎稍胜一筹。 radio， wireless——收音机。原本两字后都有set，即radio set及 wireless set，但为了节省，一般都略去。两个字中，当然是美式英语radio流行得多。 second floor， first floor——二楼。这种对楼宇的层数的称呼方法在不少地区造成了很大的不便。以往，许多楼宇按英式英语的叫法，故此问题尚不大。但近年来，不少的楼宇使用了美式英语的叫法，因此就产生了混乱。现在一般对人家说第若干层楼时，一定要附带说一声“电梯多少字”，以免误会。 soft—drinks， minerals——软饮品：汽水等不含酒精的饮料。美式英语的 soft—drinks原来泛指不含酒精的饮料，包括汽水和果汁等，现时多用来指汽水，代替了原先的 air—ate water。英式英语的 minerals由于没有 soft—drains那么通行，故此用来指汽水的机会少了，但比较多用来指矿泉水，等于 mineral water。 综观上述列举的小量例子，可以看出，美式英语(虽然仅列举了单词)在许多地区已逐渐占了上风。

接入Internet的方式主要分为宽带和窄带两种，窄带主要是指拨号上网、ISDN等速度比较慢的网络连接方式；而宽带的范围比较广，其中包含了ADSL、光纤接入等。除此之外，目前还有通过手机上网的方式。用户可以根据自身的情况，选择适合自己的上网方式。 1.电话拨号上网 拨号上网是一种最简单的Internet的接入方式。拨号上网的优点是安装和配置简单，一次性投入成本低。用户只需要从ISP（网络运营商）处获取一个上网帐号，然后将必备的硬件连接起来，在操作系统中作一些简单的设置，就能拨号连接Internet，享受上网的乐趣了。但是，拨号上网的速度较慢。 2.ISDN上网 ISDN是IntegratedServiceDigitalNetwork的缩写，中文的意思是窄带综合业务数字网，俗称“一线通”。这种接入Internet方式的特点是：多业务性，即可实现电话、传真、可视图文、可视电话等多种业务；数字话，即提供到端的是数字连接，终端到终端间完全实现数字化信息交换质量较高；使用方便性，即只需一个入网接口，使用一个统一号码，用户在这个接口上可连接不同种类的多个终端。 3.ASDL上网 ASDL是目前在我国使用最广泛的一种上网方式。ASDL英文全称为AsymmetricDigitalSubscriberLine,即非对数字用户线。ASDL技术是一种在普通电话线上高速传输数据的技术，它使用了电话线中一直没有被使用过的频率，所以可以突破调制解调器的56Kbps速度的极限。ASDL支持1.5~8Mbps的下行数据传输速率（宽带）和16~640Kbps的上行数据带宽。 ASDL技术的主要特点是可以充分利用现有的电话网络，在线路两端加装ASDL设备即可为用户提供高速宽带服务。ASDL的另外一个优点在于它可以与普通电话共存于一条电话线上，在一条普通电话线上接听、拨打电话的同时进行ASDL传输而又互不影响。在现有的电话线上安装ASDL，只需一台ASDL终端设备（或称ASDLModem）和一只电话分离器，用户线路上不用改动，极其方便。由于ASDL的速度很快，ASDL终端与计算机的连接不能用串行口和并行口，用户需购买一块网卡装到计算机上，再与ASDL终端相连。 4.光纤上网 使用光纤有线电视线路上网是指通过CableModem(一种接入设备)连入有线电视环线接入Internet的一种方式。其下载速率最高可达6Mbps，上载速率可达640Mbps。用户通过有线电视网络，便可获取高速的Internet接入。 5.手机上网 要了解手机上网，首先要了解一个概念——WAP。WAP是在数字移动电话、因特网、计算机及其他个人数字助理机（PDA）之间进行通讯的开放标准。它是由一系列协议组成的标准化无线通信设备，可用于Internet访问，包括收发电子邮件、访问WAP网站上的页面等。WAP将移动网络和Internet以及公司的局域网紧密的联系起来，提供一种与网络运营商和终端设备独立的移动增值业务。通过这种技术，无论你在何时、何地，只要打开WAP手机，就能享受网上资源。 WAP是“WirelessApplicationProtocol”的缩写，中文意思是无线应用协议，WAP融合了计算机、网络和电信领域的新技术，能够为移动电话用户提供上网服务。 设置IP地址问题大同小异，只要在网上邻居中=>“查看网络连接”=>“本地连接”打开“属性”=>“（TCP/IP）”输入正确的地址。每个地方的IP号段是不同的，更具实际情况而定。

.失去恩宠 　　「陈后失宠，长门掩扉」是李白《拟恨赋》里的话，说的虽然是陈皇后色衰失宠，给汉武帝冷落长门宫故事，使人想到的却是千古朝士、宫人最害怕的遭遇：失宠于天子。 　　英国人也害怕失宠：失宠于天父（fall from grace）。按grace是「神的恩宠」。据基督教说，人类始祖亚当、夏娃吃了伊甸园的禁果，失去了神的恩宠，给赶出了伊甸园，这就是fall from grace了。现在，基督教谈到人的堕落，依然会说the fall of man或man"s fall from grace。 　　不过，在日常用语里，fall from grace一般是指个人堕落，或者失去上司信任、恩宠等，例如：（1）She fell from grace when she accepted the bribery（她接受了贿赂，走上歧途了）。（2）His demotion marked his fall from grace（他给降级，显然是失宠了）。 　　2. 头号人物 　　读英文报纸，有时会看到the big cheese这个词，说的是大人物或最重要的人物。Cheese一般是指干酪，为什么会用来指人呢? 　　原来这里说的cheese，根本不是解作「干酪」的那个cheese，而是印度、巴基斯坦通用的乌尔都词（Urdu）里chiz一字的变体。Chiz等于英文字thing（东西）的意思。英国人曾经统治印度，语言受到印度影响是很自然的事。至于big字，常常都是用来指大人物的，例如big gun、big shot、big wheel、big wig等，都是指大人物。有时，人们还会用Mr. Big一词来说大人物或者犯罪集团首脑，例如：Who is Mr. Big around here?（这一带头号人物是谁？） 　　留意big cheese、big gun、Mr. Big等都是俚语，不宜用在严肃文字里，例如Tom is the big cheese in the gang（汤姆是那帮人的头头）。 　　3.一闪即灭的火光 　　从前，小孩子很喜欢玩擦石生火的游戏：在阴暗地方拿着两块石头一样，就可以看见火花飞溅一瞬即灭。「石火无留光，还如世中人。」幸而小孩子不懂得大人的感慨。 　　英国人也有一句类似「石火无留光」的成语：flash in the pan。按flash是一瞬间闪现的火光，pan这里不是指锅，而是指旧式火枪里的小火药池。旧式火枪开火很麻烦：首先要把火药倒进那火药池里，然后敲打火石引发火苗点着火药，凭火药的推力把子弹打出枪管。有时火药是点着了，可火光在火药池里一闪即灭，子弹却没有打出去，这叫做flash in the pan。现在，这种旧式火枪已经没有人用了，但是，人们还会用flash in the pan来说显耀一时却终归失败、虎头蛇尾或昙花一现，例如：His success as an actor proved to be a flash in the pan（他在戏台上光芒四射的日子转眼就过去了）。 　　4.瓷器店里的公牛　考试大论坛 　　常常闯祸的粗人，英文叫做a bull in a china shop（瓷器店里的公牛）。这成语的意象十分明白，只是它的来历今天很多人大概都不知道了。 　　一八一六年，英国派遣阿默斯特勋爵（Lord Amherst）到中国商谈贸易事宜，由于他不遵守中国朝廷礼节，终于无功而回。英国一份报纸于是发表漫画，把这位勋爵画成一只闯进了瓷器店的公牛，讽剌他粗鲁败事。英国人向来有「约翰牛」（John Bull）绰号；而china一字，既可以指瓷器，也可以指中国，所以，那幅漫画可以说是一语双关的。 　　A bull in a china shop这成语除了说人，当然还可以用来说政府、工商业机构等等，例如：Following its failure to reach an agreement with Canada, his government is accused of having acted like a bull in a china shop（由于他领导的政府跟加拿大没法取得协议，受到了卤莽败事的指责）。 　　5.扫桌面 　　胜过所有对手或赢得所有奖品、荣誉，英文叫做sweep the board或sweep the table。按sweep这里解作「扫尽」，board指做桌面的木板。sweep the board和取胜究竟有什么关系呢?　采集者退散 　　原来这成语里的「桌」是轮盘赌桌。玩轮盘赌的时候，假如小球停在零字上面，那么，押在盘上的赌注就全部归庄家所有了。庄家会用木尺把桌面上的金钱、筹码全部「扫」进*口袋里。所以，sweep the board/table可以指在赌博里赢得所有金钱，也可以引伸为「大获全胜」的意思，例如：In his first year at the university, Tom swept the board and won all the scholarships offered by his department（汤姆大学一年级的时候，赢得了他那个学系设的所有奖学金）。
