Starting a new book is a risk, just like falling in love. You have to commit to it. You open the pages knowing a little bit about it maybe, from the back or from a blurb on the front. But who knows, right? Those bits and pieces aren"t always right.

Sometimes people advertise themselves as one thing and then when you get deep into it you realize that they"re something completely different. Either there was some good marketing attached to a terrible book, or the story was only explained in a superficial way and once you reach the middle of the book, you realize there"s so much more to this book than anyone could have ever told you.

You start off slow. The story is beginning to unfold. You"re unsure. It"s a big commitment lugging this tome around. Maybe this book won"t be that great but you"ll feel guilty about putting it down. Maybe it"ll be so awful you"ll keep hate-reading or just set it down immediately and never pick it up again. Or maybe you"ll come back to it some night, drunk or lonely — needing something to fill the time, but it won"t be any better than it was when you first started reading it.

Maybe you"re worn out. You"ve read tons of books before. Some were just light weights on a Kindle or Nook, no big deal really. Others were Infinite Jest-style burdens, heavy on your back or in your purse. Weighing you down all the time. Maybe you"ve taken some time off from reading because the last few books you read just weren"t worth it. Do they even write new, great works of literature anymore? Maybe that time you fell in love with a book before will just never happen for you again. Maybe it"s a once in a lifetime feeling and you"re never gonna find it again.

Or something exciting could happen. Maybe this will become your new favorite book. That"s always a possibility right? That"s the beauty of risk. The reward could actually be worth it. You invest your time and your brain power in the words and what you get back is empathy and a new understanding and pure wonder.

How could someone possibly know you like this? Some stranger, some author, some character. It"s like they"re seeing inside your soul. This book existed inside some book store, on a shelf, maybe handled by other people and really it was just waiting for you pick it up and crack the spine. It was waiting to speak to you. To say, “You are not alone.”

You just want more of the story. You want to keep reading, maybe everything this author"s ever written. You wish it would never end. The closer it gets to the smaller side of the pages, the slower you read, wanting to savor it all. This book is now one of your favorites forever. You will always wish you could go back to never having read it and pick it up fresh again, but also you know you"re better for having this close, inside you, covering your heart and mind.

Once you get in deep enough, you know you could never put this book down.

Each human being is born as something new, something that never existed before. Each is born with the capacity to win at life. Each person has a unique way of seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and thinking. Each has his or her own unique potentials—capabilities and limitations. Each can be a significant, thinking, aware, and creative being—a productive person, a winner.

The word “winner” and “loser” have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who makes someone else lose. To us, a winner is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of a society.

Winners do not dedicated their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be; rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence and manipulating others. They are aware that there is a difference between being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable. Winners do not need to hide behind a mask.

Winners are not afraid to do their own thinking and to use their own knowledge. They can separate facts from opinions and don"t pretend to have all the answers. They listen to others, evaluate what they say, but come to their own conclusions. Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound, or awed by them.

Winners do not play “helpless”, nor do they play the blaming game. Instead, they assume responsibility for their own lives. They don"t give others a false authority over them. Winners are their own bosses and know it.

A winner"s timing is right. Winners respond appropriately to the situation. Their responses are related to the message sent and preserve the significance, worth, well-being, and dignity of the people involved. Winners know that for everything there is a season and for every activity a time.

Although winners can freely enjoy themselves, they can also postpone enjoyment, can discipline themselves in the present to enhance their enjoyment in the future. Winners are not afraid to go after what he wants, but they do so in proper ways. Winners do not get their security by controlling others. They do not set themselves up to lose.

A winner cares about the world and its peoples. A winner is not isolated from the general problems of society, but is concerned, compassionate, and committed to improving the quality of life. Even in the face of national and international adversity, a winner"s self-image is not one of a powerless individual. A winner works to make the world a better place.

I recently met an old friend I hadn"t seen in ages.

He said that he had been busy and also didn"t really know to contact me.

  I told him the same.

The truth is, we have a few mutual friends, if we had really wanted to contact each other, we could have.

But with busy schedules, and family life--and all sorts of things going on --well, I guess we just lost touch.

So, I got to thinking about the people I am in touch with now and those I"d like to contact.

I have a lot of friends and acquaintances,

I used to have many more. Somewhere along the line,

we just lost contact with each other.

I"d like to contact some of my friends from high school.

I"d like to say hello to some of the people I used to know in New York and California,

I know I could do it.

It wouldn"t require me to bend over backwards,

but I am not sure if I should.

I mean, I have my hands full right now with family and work.

Plus, I have people that I am in contact with now,

and I fell kind of guilty that I am not able to spend more time with them.

Who needs more guilt? Not me!

在我一生中最有影响力的书大学英语作文   The Most Influential Book In My Life-在我一生中最有影响力的"书   第一篇:   I don't think I have read many books; nevertheless, I attach much importance to reading. A Chinese proverb says, "It's always a good thing to open a book; " in other words, reading is always beneficial. Despite the fact I am not widely read, I can rest contented that the few books I have ever read really greatly added to my knowledge. Still, if you want me to name the book that I like best and has largely shaped my life, I will definitely say it is the Bible. We know human life consists of three parts: first, physical life; second, mental and intellectual life; third, spiritual life. The second and third parts I fine in the Bible. The Bible has two portions, the Old Testament and the New Testament. You will marvel at the rich contents of the Bible when you read it. It covers a wide range of subject matters: law, history, prophecy, gospels, history of churches and visions of the future, and all are couched in a simple yet beautiful language. I have been a reader of the Bible for a number of years since a good friend of mine introduced it to me by chance. I like it and take it with me everywhere I go. Maybe just one or two pages I can read each bay, yet even form so little can I learn so much. It gives me moral strength and teaches me how to order my daily life. In a word, this book plays an important role in my life. The Bible is not simply great literature to be admired and revered; it is food for thought for everyone.   第二篇:   The most influential book in my life is, so far, "The Life of Fire and Iron" by a Japanese author. Among other things, it introduces the mind of Voto von Bismarck, a prominent European in the 19th century who laid the foundation of modern German. Small wonder that I as a teenager was carried away when I first read the biography, not so much by the intriguing process in which the nation was founded as by the personality of Bismarck as described in the book. Though this formidable figure was long since dead, he remains a statesman par excellence. It was a pity that such a man of strength and character like Bismarck who, swimming against the stream of constitutionalism, could not give full vent to his talent simply because the German emperor Wilhelm II was jealous of his fame. Nevertheless, what whit his loyalty to the country and what with his indefatigable personality, he did win himself the reputation as a patriotic fighter reminiscent of Winston Churchill in contemporary time. Again and again I attempted to grasp every trait of the fighter's Brought to life by the biographer, wishing that someday I could be like him. Thus when I was still a starry-eyed lad I took to heart whatever Bismarck thought, did and valued saw him as the pole-star of many years I used to meditate on what the book said whenever I was faced with troubles and could not make decisions off hand. To speak the truth, what the book inspired, whether it was in connection with Bismarck himself or not, did help me in solving problems without fall. In short, I can never praise the book too much for it has influenced me so greatly in the past and will, I am afraid, continue to do so in days to come.   第三篇:   As a senior high school student I am all the time weighed down with an seemingly endless series of exams and can hardly take a rest, let alone read extracurricular books, seeing that I am really pressed for time in preparing for the upcoming "Big Exam." Therefore, I can't say I had any deep impression of a certain book until a few days ago. It was during the Spring Recess that I went alone to school to get some study done. There, I met by chance an alumna studying in college. Being always nervous and worried about the coming College Entrance Exam, I was rather eager to get some information on how to use the limited time wisely and stop worrying. So I asked for advice based on experience. After realizing my trouble, she fetched me a book by the name of "studying and Exams" by way of an answer. Before I ever read the book I was quite poor at arranging my study scheme and could not make the of the time available. So the time I spent and the result I got were not always proportional. Under such circumstances I never did a good job the academic side in the pursuit of knowledge during the past years. It was really regretful that after so many years of studying I didn't even know a bit about the right way to study. And all this had kept bothering me. But my misgivings were all dispelled the time I finished reading this book. Under the proper guidance of the book I now find myself studying with ease and more efficiently. All I can say is that the power of the book is truly amazing. In other words, "studying and exams" is indeed the most influential book in my life.   第四篇:   I have always been a voracious reader, but the pity is that I used to be indiscriminate in my reading habit. I would read and book which I could lay my hand on or any book the binding or the blurb of which caught my fancy at the moment. But when I grew up I found that books have to be useful or they would be much more harmful that a bad habit, and also that life is too short for us to waste it reading inferior or useless books. To read choice books can save time and we would thus be able to read more of them. The question of choosing good and suitable books, however, was once my greatest coming and it came in the form of a book, the Chinese translation of a book by the famous English writer W.S Maugham in which he introduces his readers to the best of world literature. I got the book by chance. I took part in a simulated entrance examination and won the ninth prize, the book I have just mentioned. I was delighted that Maugham, shows not only the content of each of the major works in his mind but also the way to read it. Thanks to this book I have come to know what is really meant by the literary spirit and what are the ingredients of great books. I would call it the most influential book in my life and would like to recommend it to all those lovers of literature.   第五篇:   No book has ever influenced me so much as The old Man and the Sea It is a novelette by Ernest Hemingway about a fisherman named Santiago who finally proved himself a hero by his courage perseverance and confidence After eighty-four days of unsuccessful fishing the weather-beaten yet well-experienced old man decided to go into the Gulf Stream to catch a big fish Thus on the eighty-fifth day he went aloe in his skiff and hooked a big marlin After struggling with it for two days and two nights he at last killed the big fish Exhausted but happy he returned with the fish Exhausted but happy he returned with the fish lashed to the skiff but on his homeward journey both he and the fish were attacked by sharks and upon his arrival at the harbor in Havanaz there was nothing but the big skeleton of the fish to prove his heroism at sea At the close of the story I was deeply struck by the iron will of the protagonist. "A man is not made for defeat," said the old man. "A man can be destroyed but not defeated."Such words are a fillip to me when I look back on my failure in the entrance examination last year. I was then so upset that I even questioned the meaning of existence. Yet the Hemigway book brings home to me the truth of the saying "Failure is the mother of success," which I have never taken seriously before. I also know that the will to struggle is what counts, not the result thereof. With the understanding that no man is perfect, I regain the confidence in my ability to study harder. I believe I can make it this year.   第六篇:   The story of my life by Helen Keller is the most influential book in my life. It abounds with courage, struggle and faith throughout. Helen Keller was once in deep despair in her childhood, but finally she decided to overcome her physical defects and live happily. Furthermore, she showed great patience in her long and hard learning period. I have learned, above all, three lessons from her story. First, she taught me that often the road to success is to face hardships unflinchingly. Maybe you are born under an ill star yet you can stand a better chance than others. It is therefore important that you screw up your courage when courage is needed. Second, the impairment of part of her senses did not prevent her from learning: on the contrary, she had made continual efforts to go deeper into the realm of knowledge her fortitude had thus helped her overcome many handicaps. Third, she advised that we should make the most of our sense-organs as if we would lose them soon because this way we would observe the world more carefully than ever before. The book is inspiring in that it is one brimming over with the unbending will of a gallant woman beset with seemingly insurmountable difficulties. I hope I can be as courageous as she. ;

Either there was some good marketing attached to a terrible book, or the story was only explained in a superficial way and once you reach the middle of the book, you realize there"s so much more to this book than anyone could have ever told you.You start off slow. Or maybe you"ll come back to it some night, drunk or lonely — needing something to fill the time, but it won"t be any better than it was when you first started reading it.Maybe you"re worn out. Maybe it"s a once in a lifetime feeling and you"re never gonna find it again.Or something exciting could happen. To say, “You are not alone.”You just want more of the story. You want to keep reading, maybe everything this author"s ever written. You wish it would never end. The closer it gets to the smaller side of the pages, the slower you read, wanting to savor it all. This book is now one of your favorites forever. You will always wish you could go back to never having read it and pick it up fresh again, but also you know you"re better for having this close, inside you, covering your heart and mind.Once you get in deep enough, you know you could never put this book down.

Can We Really Couldn"t Hold Tomorrow? “A year"s plan starts with spring. A day"s plan starts with morning.” People often would like to make some plans and preparations, even make an accurate calculation of each stage so as to make study and work systematic and orderly. On the contrary, “Plan varies faster than change.” Even the most accurate plan may have accidents and maybe disturbed. It then became the excuse for those who are unwilling to make plans. Are you good at making plans? Will you make a schedule for a week, a month, a quarter or even a year? If your plan is disturbed, what will you do? Will you follow suit or be pushed by time? What is Love? "What is love" was the most searched phrase on Google in 2012, according to the company. In an attempt to get to the bottom of the question once and for all, the Guardian has gathered writers from the fields of science, literature, religion and philosophy to give their definition of the much-pondered word. The physicist: "Love is chemistry" Biologically, love is a powerful neurological condition like hunger or thirst, only more permanent. We talk about love being blind or unconditional, in the sense that we have no control over it. But then, that is not so surprising since love is basically chemistry. While lust is a temporary passionate sexual desire involving the increased release of chemicals such as testosterone and oestrogen, in true love, or attachment and bonding, the brain can release a whole set of chemicals: pheromones, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin and vasopressin. However, from an evolutionary perspective, love can be viewed as a survival tool u2013 a mechanism we have evolved to promote long-term relationships, mutual defense and parental support of children and to promote feelings of safety and security. The philosopher: "Love is a passionate commitment" The answer remains elusive in part because love is not one thing. Love for parents, partners, children, country, neighbor, God and so on all have different qualities. Each has its variants u2013 blind, one-sided, tragic, steadfast, fickle, reciprocated, misguided, and unconditional. At its best, however, all love is a kind a passionate commitment that we nurture and develop, even though it usually arrives in our lives unbidden. That"s why it is more than just a powerful feeling. Without the commitment, it is mere infatuation. Without the passion, it is mere dedication. Without nurturing, even the best can wither and die. The romantic novelist: "Love drives all great stories" What love is depends on where you are in relation to it. Secure in it, it can feel as mundane and necessary as air u2013 you exist within it, almost unnoticing. Deprived of it, it can feel like an obsession; all consuming, a physical pain. Love is the driver for all great stories: not just romantic love, but the love of parent for child, for family, for country. It is the point before consummation of it that fascinates: what separates you from love, the obstacles that stand in its way. It is usually at those points that love is everything. The nun: "Love is free yet binds us" Love is more easily experienced than defined. As a theological virtue, by which we love God above all things, it seems remote until we encounter it enfleshed, so to say, in the life of another u2013 in acts of kindness, generosity and self-sacrifice. Love"s the one thing that can never hurt anyone, although it may cost dearly. The paradox of love is that it is supremely free yet attaches us with bonds stronger than death. It cannot be bought or sold; there is nothing it cannot face; love is life"s greatest blessing. Falling in Love is Like Reading a Book Starting a new book is a risk, just like falling in love. You have to commit to it. You open the pages knowing a little bit about it maybe, from the back or from a blurb on the front. But who knows, right? Those bits and pieces aren"t always right. Sometimes people advertise themselves as one thing and then when you get deep into it you realize that theyu2019re something completely different. Either there was some good marketing attached to a terrible book, or the story was only explained in a superficial way and once you reach the middle of the book, you realize thereu2019s so much more to this book than anyone could have ever told you. You start off slow. The story is beginning to unfold. Youu2019re unsure. Itu2019s a big commitment lugging this time around. Maybe this book wonu2019t be that great but youu2019ll feel guilty about putting it down. Maybe itu2019ll be so awful youu2019ll keep hate-reading or just set it down immediately and never pick it up again. Or maybe youu2019ll come back to it some night, drunk or lonely — needing something to fill the time, but it wonu2019t be any better than it was when you first started reading it. Maybe youu2019re worn out. Youu2019ve read tons of books before. Some were just light weights on a Kindle or Nook, no big deal really. Others were Infinite Jest-style burdens, heavy on your back or in your purse. Weighing you down all the time. Maybe youu2019ve taken some time off from reading because the last few books you read just werenu2019t worth it. Do they even write new, great works of literature anymore? Maybe that time you fell in love with a book before will just never happen for you again. Maybe itu2019s a once in a lifetime feeling and youu2019re never gonna find it again. Or something exciting could happen. Maybe this will become your new favorite book. Thatu2019s always a possibility right? Thatu2019s the beauty of risk. The reward could actually be worth it. You invest your time and your brain power in the words and what you get back is empathy and a new understanding and pure wonder. How could someone possibly know you like this? Some stranger, some author, some character. Itu2019s like theyu2019re seeing inside your soul. This book existed inside some book store, on a shelf, maybe handled by other people and really it was just waiting for you pick it up and crack the spine. It was waiting to speak to you.

Numerous language exercises of different kinds are devised so that the students may consolidate and expand their language knowledge and further improve their language skills. The course books are basic reading material for college students,so the training of language skills can not be neglected.Large numbers of grammar, vocabulary, and writing exercises relevant to each text, such as structure, word building, translation and structured writing are provided.By doing these exercises, the students are expected to consolidate and enlarge their vocabulary. At the same time, these exercises assist them to write articles in different styles, and to enhance their reading ability.Various types of exercises are designed so that the students may acquire integrated language skills in English.Listening is a summary of text A.The advantages of this include linking written English to its pronunciation, providing models for stress and intonation and generally bringing the text to life.It integrates the listening skill with the reading skills.Pre-reading Questions is a kind of integration of speaking and reading skills. These exercises are meant to be used in the classroom so as to further train the students" listening and speaking skills. Each unit has a writing assignment to improve the students" writing skills. The focus of training, however,is on reading skills. In this case,it can meet student"s need for improving their language skills as well as teaching syllabus"s requirement—students should acquire integrated language skills in English. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing can no longer be treated as four separate single skills,as the relationship among them is that of coordination, correlation and interdependence.Oral discussion is based on reading, but at the same time it promotes reading comprehension and develops writing ability. The writing ability derives from reading; in the meantime it steps up the speaking ability.Reading, providing the students with large language input,is the fountainhead of English study. Thus,we might say that the training of the four skills, though not conducted simultaneously,is an integrative process.Non-linear texts are used in each unitIn each unit, there is a little picture relevant to the topic of the unit.We know the editor is making use of visual aids to motivate students to read.Different typefaces are used.Numerous exercises are provided to train students" reading skillsPreview of text A,B and C gives a brief introduction to the three texts. It acts as a blurb of the unit to help the student understand the texts.Listening is a summary of text A.This is a kind of top-down processing of the texts. We make conscious use of it to try to see the overall purpose of the text,or get a rough idea of the pattern of the writer"s argument,in order to make a reasoned guess at the next step.Pre-reading QuestionsOne of the purposes of this section is to elicit the schema and reactivate the students" existing relevant idea and background knowledge.People of similar background tend to have similar schemata; for them, the shared assumptions are more than for people coming from different background.Let me also take unit 1 for an example.Question 2 “Look at the subheadings,1-8,in the text.Which of these activities do you already do?In which areas do you feel you need improvement?” Question 3“Are there any ‘secrets" to your own success as a student? In other words,do you have any special study techniques which have been very successful for you?” These two questions play a very good role in activating students" schemata.

ftp权限配置是比较繁琐的。我之前只配置在ubuntu 14.04中配置过,没在centos 7中配置过,具体过程可以参考下:一. 为了服务器的安全,只可以使用ftp登录,禁止使用telnet与ssh登录1,修改/etc/pam.d/vsftpd的验证模块 # Standard behaviour for ftpd(8). auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/ftpusers onerr=succeed# Note: vsftpd handles anonymous logins on its own. Do not enable # pam_ftp.so.# Standard blurb. @include common-account @include common-session@include common-auth #auth required pam_shells.so 注销下auth required pam_sheels.so验证2,修改/etc/vsftpd.conf文件,添加check_shell=NO至vsftpd文件。3,修改/etc/passwd用户的shell为false或nologin,重启/etc/init.d/vsftpd即可. 当然,也可以修改/etc/passwd中wp26:x:1002:1002::/home/vhost/wp26:/bin/false的最后/bin/false为/usr/bin/passwd,让用户登录系统只能够修改密码。二. 设置ftp相关目录

Starting A New Book Is A Risk

To say, “You are not alone.” You just want more of the story.

You are not alone

To say, “You are not alone.” You just want more of the story.

Those bits and pieces aren"t always right. Sometimes people advertise themselves as one thing and then when you get deep into it you realize that they"re something pletely different. Either there was some good marketing attached to a terrible book, or the story was only explained in a superficial way and once you reach the middle of the book, you realize there"s so much more to this book than anyone could have ever told you. You start off slow. The story is beginning to unfold. You"re unsure. It"s a big mitment lugging this time around. Maybe this book won"t be that great but you"ll feel guilty about putting it down. Maybe it"ll be so awful you"ll keep hate-reading or just set it down immediately and never pick it up again. Or maybe you"ll e back to it some night, drunk or lonely — needing something to fill the time, but it won"t be any better than it was when you first started reading it. Maybe this will bee your new favorite book. To say, “You are not alone.” You just want more of the story. You want to keep reading, maybe everything this author"s ever written. You wish it would never end. The closer it gets to the *** aller side of the pages, the slower you read, wanting to savor it all. This book is now one of your favorites forever. You will always wish you could go back to never having read it and pick it up fresh again, but also you know you"re better for having this close, inside you, covering your heart and mind.

Numerous language exercises of different kinds are devised so that the students may consolidate and expand their language knowledge and further improve their language skills. The course books are basic reading material for college students, so the training of language skills can not be neglected. Large numbers of grammar, vocabulary, and writing exercises relevant to each text, such as structure, word building, translation and structured writing are provided. By doing these exercises, the students are expected to consolidate and enlarge their vocabulary. At the same time, these exercises assist them to write articles in different styles, and to enhance their reading ability. Various types of exercises are designed so that the students may acquire integrated language skills in English. Listening is a summary of text A. The advantages of this include linking written English to its pronunciation, providing models for stress and intonation and generally bringing the text to life. It integrates the listening skill with the reading skills. Pre-reading Questions is a kind of integration of speaking and reading skills. These exercises are meant to be used in the classroom so as to further train the students" listening and speaking skills. Each unit has a writing assignment to improve the students" writing skills. The focus of training, however, is on reading skills. In this case, it can meet student"s need for improving their language skills as well as teaching syllabus"s requirement—students should acquire integrated language skills in English. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing can no longer be treated as four separate single skills, as the relationship among them is that of coordination, correlation and interdependence. Oral discussion is based on reading, but at the same time it promotes reading comprehension and develops writing ability. The writing ability derives from reading; in the meantime it steps up the speaking ability. Reading, providing the students with large language input, is the fountainhead of English study. Thus, we might say that the training of the four skills, though not conducted simultaneously, is an integrative process. Non-linear texts are used in each unit In each unit, there is a little picture relevant to the topic of the unit. We know the editor is making use of visual aids to motivate students to read. Different typefaces are used.Numerous exercises are provided to train students" reading skills Preview of text A, B and C gives a brief introduction to the three texts. It acts as a blurb of the unit to help the student understand the texts. Listening is a summary of text A. This is a kind of top-down processing of the texts. We make conscious use of it to try to see the overall purpose of the text, or get a rough idea of the pattern of the writer"s argument, in order to make a reasoned guess at the next step. Pre-reading Questions One of the purposes of this section is to elicit the schema and reactivate the students" existing relevant idea and background knowledge. People of similar background tend to have similar schemata; for them, the shared assumptions are more than for people coming from different background. Let me also take unit 1 for an example. Question 2 “Look at the subheadings, 1-8, in the text. Which of these activities do you already do? In which areas do you feel you need improvement?” Question 3“Are there any ‘secrets" to your own success as a student? In other words, do you have any special study techniques which have been very successful for you?” These two questions play a very good role in activating students" schemata.

These days I tend to enjoy games that are similar to a good book: a solitary, escapist experience I can get completely lost in without any interruptions from the outside world. Firewatch, then _ on the strength of its gripping story, brilliant branching script, wholly convincing voice-acting performances, and stunning art direction _ is easily one of my favorite and most memorable game experiences of this decade. Firewatch quickly lets you know that it"s not going to pull any emotional punches over its four to five_hour runtime, opening with a series of text-based choices that call back to adventure genre forebears like Zork. I dare not spoil this potent sequence, but I will say that it masterfully bounces between being funny and heart-wrenching and plausibly establishes just why protagonist Henry ends up in the Wyoming woods as a solitary fire lookout. Once you arrive there, Firewatch"s powerful ambiance takes hold. The story takes place over the course of an entire summer, with different “days” _ which are treated as chapters of the story _ playing out at different hours of the day and night. That allows bold reds, yellows, and oranges to color this fictional Wyoming forest"s beautifully painted scenery (a contribution by renowned illustrator Olly Moss) _ all in a comfortable and immersive first-person perspective. It is a testament to both Moss and Firewatch"s level designers that, even despite the stylized look, the Two Forks Woods sticks in my mind like a real place: the narrow passage through Thunder Canyon, the serene calm of Jonesy Lake, the comically small size of Pork Pond, and the unexplained mystery of the Medicine Wheel. In fact, only the strange absence of almost any wildlife whatsoever betrays the convincing setting. Firewatch sounds as good as it looks, thanks to a world-class script acted to perfection by its two leads. Rookie lookout Henry is given a playful vulnerability; you can choose to play him serious or funny, and the performance is up to the task either way. Henry"s boss _ and primary point of human contact for the entire summer _ is Delilah. He Said, She Said他说,她说Right from the jump, their relationship feels real, despite the fact that they"re communicating entirely via radio, with no faces on screen to lend emotional cues. Henry _ or Hank, as she sometimes defiantly calls him _ comes across as a good man at heart, but a flawed one _ a man not sure about whether or not to go back to the life he left behind in Boulder, Colorado. He is fully capable of matching wits with Delilah, who uses humor as a shield for the personal life she doesn"t like discussing as they get to know each other over the course of the summer. It"s a pair of firework-launching teenage girls that set Firewatch"s story in motion, and you can choose to talk to Delilah at almost any time by bringing up your two-way radio. She"s got something to say about almost everything, whether you need advice on how to handle a given situation or you"re just reporting your progress on a task she"s given you, and she"s so engaging that I found myself eager to call about every little thing I came across. Things get darker _ in a figurative as well as a sometimes literal sense _ when the teens go missing, and you and Delilah try to piece together the puzzle of their whereabouts while making your own critical (sometimes difficult) decisions. The writing here is simply head and shoulders above nearly every other game I"ve ever played. In fact, Firewatch"s script, unlike most video games, would also make a fantastic novella that"s every bit as gripping as the game is. It"s tense, scary, and funny _ sometimes all within a few minutes of each other. Not a lot of games can successfully claim that. Like other so-called “walking simulators,” the gameplay in Firewatch is the story, though at least there"s more to actually do here than in most games within the genre. A substantial swath of Two Forks Woods is explorable, with supply caches, unique sights, and even a hidden turtle you can adopt (you"re gonna live with me now, Shelly Duvall!). You"ll rappel down cliffsides, climb up rock formations, explore the lookout tower that doubles as your home for the summer, and more. And yet, these same simple actions that are a delightful exploration of your new surroundings at the beginning of the game become almost terrifying as the plot progresses, leading to points where, playing in Henry"s first-person perspective,I was afraid to turn around in the vast, lonely woods. Speaking of navigation: though I"m thankful there"s no giant arrow at the top of the screen pointing me exactly to where I need to go at any given moment, I did find getting around the Two Forks Woods a bit cumbersome at times, particularly near the end. While I was never hung up for too long, translating the map to the actual trail in front of you had me occasionally taking a wrong fork in the path. Henry"s compass helps a lot, however, so I was never hung up for too long. As for the ending, it"s the only other part of Firewatch I wasn"t crazy about. I want to be very careful not to spoil anything, so I"ll just say that I didn"t quite find the revelation I had hoped for when I reached the end of what the story had been building up to. At the same time, however, I didn"t dislike the ending either. In fact, I find myself still thinking about it, trying to think of missed clues or other small cues that might yet give me the “Ah-ha!” moment I"m after. I"ll be very interested to hear other people"s take on the conclusion _ this is the kind of game where the discussions that will arise afterwards are an important extension of the experience itself. The Verdict总结Firewatch is amazing for many reasons, but above all because it"s an adult game that deals with serious issues, with realistic adult dialogue to match. And it deals with those issues just like actual adults would: sometimes with humor, sometimes with anger, and sometimes with sadness. It is among the very best of the first-person narrative genre, and it reminds us what video game storytelling is capable of in the right hands. It"s a game I can see coming back to every year or two just to revisit its beautiful sights and memorable characters _ just like a good book.
