2.Simple joints to tubular columns using flowdrill connectors
Flowdrilling was initially limited to mechanical applications until Sherman investigated
the use of the process for structural steelwork joints,with investigations of
both the micro-structure [3] of the thread and the bolted endplate connection [4].
The findings by Sherman were promising,suggesting that the bolts could be used
with tubular columns.Further work by Banks [5,6] and Ballerini et al.[7,8] extensively
investigated the performance of the connectors and showed them capable of
withstanding the design tensile capacity of the bolt.
Whilst simple connections in steelwork frames are designed to resist only shear
loads they also possess both bending strength and rotational stiffness.For satisfactory
performance,simple connections must be ductile.The purpose of the tests undertaken
and reported herein was to investigate the strength and rotational stiffness characteristics
of these joints.To help in the selection of practical member sizes for the joint
tests,an economic study [9] was completed on typical buildings that may employ
the flowdrill system.It was found that the 200 serial size of SHS column member
would be suitable for many of the columns in a multi-storey frame of modest height,
typical of frames built in the UK.The decision was taken to adopt the 200 section
as this particular serial size also provided a large variation of tube wall thickness
for the tests.It was also decided to adopt the 356 UB as the benchmark serial beam
size.The 356 UB serial size was partly based on the study but was also influenced
by the practical limitations of the testing apparatus.

The brazes produced at 1030oC showed mixed results.In the 15 minute braze the different metal foils melted together and bonded to the stainless steel but there was no interaction with YSZ,as seen in Fig.6.At 1030oC for 30 minutes; the filler metal melted completely and it was more homogeneous; it reacted locally with the YSZ and bonded to it.
Fig.7 shows porosity being more prominent in this braze than in the 1010oC/60’ braze.Fig.11 corresponds to the 1030oC/30’ braze and it depicts the different regions of the braze joint.The transition zone next to the stainless steel remained unchanged in terms of width and composition,(i.e.68.0-70.0 wt.% Ti,13.0 wt.% Cr,7.0-12.0 wt.% Fe,and 12-7.0 wt.% Ni).The wide band of the braze metal became larger,95-105 Im,as the narrow band of the braze metal shrunk to 30-35 Im.A large light gray second phase is observed right at the center of the braze joint of Fig.11; the EDS spot analysis (# 1 in Figure 11) showed that this phase has the same chemistry as found in the transition region next to the stainless steel.Eutectic like structures are seen at both sides of this large second phase; the dark gray matrix was determined to be α -Ti and the light phase consists of 88.0-90.0 wt.% Ti,7.0-8.0 wt.% Cr,2.0-3.0 wt.%Fe,and 1.0-2.0 wt.% Ni.
The narrow band of the braze metal (the white phase at the boundary line between these two bands in the braze metal) besides shrinking,became smaller and the nodules attached to the YSZ grew longer.It appears as if there was some type of competitive growth between these two light phases.The EDS spot analysis of the white phase (# 2 in Fig.11) shows a composition consisting of 92.0 wt % Ti and 8.0 wt.% Ni; the light gray nodules attached to the YSZ,contained some Zr,the spot analysis at location # 3 (Fig.11) resulted in 87.5 wt.% Ti,9.8 wt.%Ni,and 2.7 wt.% Zr.The compositions of the different microstructure components of the narrow band for the 1030°C/30’ braze were consistent what it was found with its counterpart of 1010°C/60’.
No reaction layer at the braze metal/ YSZ interface was found either,but both α–Ti matrix and the light gray nodules are bonded to the ceramic substrate,and bonding can only be possible if Ti oxidizes and then forms a localized solid solution with ZrO2.Evidence of the confined reduction of the ZrO2 is offered by the porosity found along this interface and the presence of some Zr in the light gray nodules attached to YSZ.Note that the chemistry of this light gray phase which is not adjacent to the interface contains just Ti at 92.0 wt.% and Ni at 8.0 wt.%,but then the nodules attached to the YSZ,had levels of about 2.7 wt.% Zr and slightly lower levels of Ti at 88.0 wt.% and Ni remaining constant.

mastic filler with its outer face recessed 13mm behind the finished surface on the

The 15 and 30 minute braze joints processed at 1010oC failed to bond completely.Bonding was limited to the filler metal and the stainless steel,and practically no interaction with the YSZ.Even though there was not significant mixing of the Ni and Ti foils at 15 minutes (Fig.3),there was measurable bonding only with the stainless steel.The 30 minute braze joint experienced larger mixing of the foils and hence more liquid was formed; this improved the bonding of the braze metal to the stainless steel,but except for a couple of small droplets that were found attached to the YSZ,there was no bonding of the braze metal to the ceramic substrate.The system brazed for 60 minutes bonded completely (Fig.5); it consists of different microstructure regions.The braze metal is about 135-145 Im; there is some type of transition layer between the stainless steel substrate and the braze metal which is 25-35 Im.The braze metal comprises of two markedly different microstructures; there is a dark gray band 85-95 Im wide containing a homogeneously dispersed fine light phase,and a second band about 50 Im wide,consisting of a dark gray matrix and a coarse lamellar-like light phase.There is also a fine second phase,dendrite or finger like shape,at the braze metal/YSZ interface.A microhardness survey across the braze joint was performed and the graph has been superimposed on top of the micrograph to relate the hardness with the different microstructure features of the joint,as seen in Fig.9.The transition zone microhardness measured 600 VHN,while the stainless steel registered 200 VHN.The microhardness corresponding to the matrix of the braze metal was measured at 400 VHN,and the coarse second phase is about 500 VHN.It was observed that the microhardness increased significantly at the braze metal/YSZ interface,where values 1400 VHN were recorded.
