Mark Twain was a famous American writer. He wrote many stories and many of them were funny stories. These stories are still read by manypeople all over the world. Besides writing, he also liked hunting and fishing very much, so one year he went to Maine(缅因州) for a holiday and spent three very pleasant weeks in the woods(树林,森林) there.
When he had to go back home, he drove to the station with his baggage. There he asked a porter(搬运工,服务员) to put it into the train. Then he got into the smoking car and sat down in one of the comfortable seats there. The car was empty when he got in, but a few minuteslater, another man got in and sat down on the seat opposite his. Mark Twain looked at the man and thought that this man looked quite unpleasant. However, it would be impolite to say nothing in that situation, so he said good morning to the man, and they began to talk.
First they talked about the weather and then theytalked about Maine. The stranger said, "We have some beautiful woods in Maine. It would be a pityto come to Maine without spending some time there. I suppose you have been in our woods, haven't you?" "Yes, I have," answered Mark Twain. "I've just spent three weeks there and I had a very good time, too. And let me tell you something. Although fishing isn't allowed in Maine at this season, I've got two hundred pounds of beautiful fish with my baggage(行李) in this train. I like to eat fish, so I packed it in ice to take it home with me. May I ask who youare, sir?"
The stranger looked at Mark Twain for several seconds and then answered, "I'm a police officer. My job is to catch people who hunt and fish during the wrong seasons. And who are you?"
Mark Twain was surprised and frightened when he heard this. He thought quickly and then answered, "Well, I'll tell you, sir. I'm the man whotells the biggest lies in America."

As the American writer,Mark Twain, once said,"Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." people begin their talks by saying,"Isn't it a nice day?""Do you think it will rain?" "I think it's going to snow." Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But sometimes they don' t agree with each other. One man may say,"Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It' s going to rain tomorrow."Another man will say,"Yes,it' s going to be fine tomorrow." People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water,he looks for something to tell him it' s going to rain, and he doesn' t look for anything else. When friends have a picnic, they hope the weather is going to be fine and they can sit eating their lunch under the blue sky.Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says. But he doesn ' t always tell us what we want, and sometimes he makes a mistake.Still,he is right most of the time.

On Nov.30,1835,the small town of Florida,Mo.witnessed the birth of its most famous son.Samuel Langhorne Clemens was welcomed into the world as the sixth child of John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens.Little did John and Jane know, their son Samuel would one day be known as Mark Twain - America's most famous literary icon.
Approximately four years after his birth,in 1839,the Clemens family moved 35 miles east to the town of Hannibal.A growing port city that lie along the banks of the Mississippi,Hannibal was a frequent stop for steam boats arriving by both day and night from St.Louis and New Orleans.
Samuel's father was a judge, and he built a two-story frame house at 206 Hill Street in 1844.As a youngster,Samuel was kept indoors because of poor health. However,by age nine,he seemed to recover from his ailments and joined the rest of the town's children outside. He then attended a private school in Hannibal.
When Samuel was 12,his father died of pneumonia, and at 13,Samuel left school to become a printer's apprentice. After two short years,he joined his brother Orion's newspaper as a printer and editorial assistant. It was here that young Samuel found he enjoyed writing.
At 17,he left Hannibal behind for a printer's job in St.Louis.While in St.Louis,Clemens became a river pilot's apprentice. He became a licensed river pilot in 1858.Clemens' pseudonym,Mark Twain, comes from his days as a river pilot. It is a river term which means two fathoms or 12-feet when the depth of water for a boat is being sounded."Mark twain" means that is safe to navigate.
Because the river trade was brought to a stand still by the Civil War in 1861,Clemens began working as a newspaper reporter for several newspapers all over the United States. In 1870,Clemens married Olivia Langdon, and they had four children, one of whom died in infancy and two who died in their twenties.Their surviving child,Clara, lived to be 88,and had one daughter.Clara's daughter died without having any children,so there are no direct descendants of Samuel Clemens living.
Twain began to gain fame when his story,"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County" appeared in the New York Saturday Press on November 18,1865.Twain's first book,"The Innocents Abroad," was published in 1869,"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" in 1876,and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in 1885.He wrote 28 books and numerous short stories, letters and sketches.
Mark Twain passed away on April 21,1910,but has a following still today. His childhood home is open to the public as a museum in Hannibal, and Calavaras County in California holds the Calavaras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee every third weekend in May.Walking tours are given in New York City of places Twain visited near his birthday every year.
Pudd'nhead Wilson
The setting of this novel is again the world that Sam Clemens grew up in,although now MT calls the village Dawson's Landing, and has moved it several hundred miles down the Mississippi River. The book was originally published in America,on 28 November 1894,as The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson and the Comedy of Those Extraordinary Twins. It began as a farce about Siamese twins -- two different temperaments inseparably linked in one body -- and wound up becoming an irony about two babies -- one slave, one free -- switched in their cradles. It was never very popular with MT's contemporaries, but as his most direct, sustained treatment of slavery it has attracted considerable attention in our time; there is as yet, however,no agreement about what it's saying. In Roxy the novel offers MT's most complex woman character.Despite the title, most commentary on the book assumes that her son,Tom/Valet de Chambers,is the central character. My own reading of it begins with the title. It is curious that MT should call it a tragedy when its ending is classically comic:true identities and an apparent social order are restored. And curiouser that he calls it Pudd'nhead Wilson's tragedy, when Wilson enacts the rise from obscurity to popularity and prestige that is usually thought of as the archetypal American success story.

Mark twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in the town of Florida, Missouri, in 1835. When he was four years old, his family moved to Hannibal, a town on the Mississippi River much like the towns depicted in his two most famous novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).
Clemens spent his young life in a fairly affluent family that owned a number of household slaves. The death of Clemens’s father in 1847, however, left the family in hardship. Clemens left school, worked for a printer, and, in 1851, having finished his apprenticeship, began to set type for his brother Orion’s newspaper, the Hannibal Journal. But Hannibal proved too small to hold Clemens, who soon became a sort of itinerant printer and found work in a number of American cities, including New York and Philadelphia.
While still in his early twenties, Clemens gave up his printing career in order to work on riverboats on the Mississippi. Clemens eventually became a riverboat pilot, and his life on the river influenced him a great deal. Perhaps most important, the riverboat life provided him with the pen name Mark Twain, derived from the riverboat leadsmen’s signal—“By the mark, twain”—that the water was deep enough for safe passage. Life on the river also gave Twain material for several of his books, including the raft scenes of Huckleberry Finn and the material for his autobiographical Life on the Mississippi (1883).
Clemens continued to work on the river until 1861, when the Civil War exploded across America and shut down the Mississippi for travel and shipping. Although Clemens joined a Confederate cavalry division, he was no ardent Confederate, and when his division deserted en masse, he did too. He then made his way west with his brother Orion, working first as a silver miner in Nevada and then stumbling into his true calling, journalism. In 1863, Clemens began to sign articles with the name Mark Twain.
Throughout the late 1860s and 1870s, Twain’s articles, stories, memoirs, and novels, characterized by an irrepressible wit and a deft ear for language and dialect, garnered him immense celebrity. His novel The Innocents Abroad (1869) was an instant bestseller, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) received even greater national acclaim and cemented Twain’s position as a giant in American literary circles. As the nation prospered economically in the post-Civil War period—an era that came to be known as the Gilded Age, an epithet that Twain coined—so too did Twain. His books were sold door-to-door, and he became wealthy enough to build a large house in Hartford, Connecticut, for himself and his wife, Olivia, whom he had married in 1870.
Twain began work on Huckleberry Finn, a sequel to Tom Sawyer, in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of the earlier novel. This new novel took on a more serious character, however, as Twain focused increasingly on the institution of slavery and the South. Twain soon set Huckleberry Finn aside, perhaps because its darker tone did not fit the optimistic sentiments of the Gilded Age. In the early 1880s, however, the hopefulness of the post-Civil War years began to fade. Reconstruction, the political program designed to reintegrate the defeated South into the Union as a slavery-free region, began to fail. The harsh measures the victorious North imposed only embittered the South. Concerned about maintaining power, many Southern politicians began an effort to control and oppress the black men and women whom the war had freed.

A Famous Story of Mark Twain里有.
Mark Twain was a famous American writer. He wrote many stories and many of them were funny stories. These stories are still read by many people all over the world.Besides writing,he also liked hunting and fishing very much,so one year he went to Maine for a holiday and spent three very pleasant weeks in the woods there.
When he had to go back home,he drove to the station with his baggage. There he asked a porter to put it into the train. Then he got into the smoking car and sat down in one of the comfortable seats there. The car was empty when he got in,but a few minutes later, another man got in and sat down on the seat opposite his.Mark Twain looked at the man and thought that this man looked quite unpleasant. However,it would be impolite to say nothing in that situation,so he said good morning to the man,and they began to talk.
First they talked about the weather and then they talked about Maine. The stranger said,"We have some beautiful woods in Maine. It would be a pity to come to Maine without spending some time there.I suppose you have been in our woods, haven't you?" "Yes,I have," answered Mark Twain."I've just spent three weeks there and I had a very good time, too. And let me tell you something.Although fishing isn't allowed in Maine at this season,I've got two hundred pounds of beautiful fish with my baggage in this train.I like to eat fish,so I packed it in ice to take it home with me.May I ask who you are, sir?"
The stranger looked at Mark Twain for several seconds and then answered,"I'm a police officer. My job is to catch people who hunt and fish during the wrong seasons. And who are you?"
Mark Twain was surprised and frightened when he heard this.He thought quickly and then answered,"Well,I'll tell you, sir.I'm the man who tells the biggest lies in America."

As an American writer,Mark Twain, once said,"Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." It is true that everybody talks about the weather. Many people begin their talks by saying:"Isn't it a nice day " "Do you think it will rain?" "I think it's going to snow"
Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But they never ever agree with each other. One man may say,"Do you see how cloudy it is in the east?It s going to rain tomorrow." Another man will say,"Yes,it's cloudy in the east.We are going to have fine weather tomorrow."
People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water,he look for something to tell him it's going to rain and he won' t believe anything else. When friends have a picnic, they are so sure the weather is going to be fine very quickly
that they sit eating their lunch while it is raining.
Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says. But he doesn't always tell us what we want, and sometimes he makes a mistakes.Still,he is right most of the time.

The Project Gutenberg EBook of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Complete by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) CHAPTER I. YOU don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. That is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary. Aunt Polly--Tom's Aunt Polly, she is--and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before. Now the way that the book winds up is this: Tom and me found the money that the robbers hid in the cave, and it made us rich. We got six thousand dollars apiece--all gold. It was an awful sight of money when it was piled up. Well, Judge Thatcher he took it and put it out at interest, and it fetched us a dollar a day apiece all the year round --more than a body could tell what to do with. The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time, considering how dismal regular and decent the widow was in all her ways; and so when I couldn't stand it no longer I lit out. I got into my old rags and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied. But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable. So I went back. The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other names, too, but she never meant no harm by it. She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn't do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up. Well, then, the old thing commenced again. The widow rung a bell for supper, and you had to come to time. When you got to the table you couldn't go right to eating, but you had to wait for the widow to tuck down her head and grumble a little over the victuals, though there warn't really anything the matter with them,--that is, nothing only everything was cooked by itself. In a barrel of odds and ends it is different; things get mixed up, and the juice kind of swaps around, and the things go better. After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people. Pretty soon I wanted to smoke, and asked the widow to let me. But she wouldn't. She said it was a mean practice and wasn't clean, and I must try to not do it any more. That is just the way with some people. They get down on a thing when they don't know nothing about it. Here she was a-bothering about Moses, which was no kin to her, and no use to anybody, being gone, you see, yet finding a power of fault with me for doing a thing that had some good in it. And she took snuff, too; of course that was all right, because she done it herself. Her sister, Miss Watson, a tolerable slim old maid, with goggles on, had just come to live with her, and took a set at me now with a spelling-book. She worked me middling hard for about an hour, and then the widow made her ease up. I couldn't stood it much longer. Then for an hour it was deadly dull, and I was fidgety. Miss Watson would say, "Don't put your feet up there, Huckleberry;" and "Don't scrunch up like that, Huckleberry--set up straight;" and pretty soon she would say, "Don't gap and stretch like that, Huckleberry--why don't you try to behave?" Then she told me all about the bad place, and I said I wished I was there. She got mad then, but I didn't mean no harm. All I wanted was to go somewheres; all I wanted was a change, I warn't particular. She said it was wicked to say what I said; said she wouldn't say it for the whole world; she was going to live so as to go to the good place. Well, I couldn't see no advantage in going where she was going, so I made up my mind I wouldn't try for it. But I never said so, because it would only make trouble, and wouldn't do no good. Now she had got a start, and she went on and told me all about the good place. She said all a body would have to do there was to go around all day long with a harp and sing, forever and ever. So I didn't think much of it. But I never said so. I asked her if she reckoned Tom Sawyer would go there, and she said not by a considerable sight. I was glad about that, because I wanted him and me to be together. Miss Watson she kept pecking at me, and it got tiresome and lonesome. By and by they fetched the niggers in and had prayers, and then everybody was off to bed. I went up to my room with a piece of candle, and put it on the table. Then I set down in a chair by the window and tried to think of something cheerful, but it warn't no use. I felt so lonesome I most wished I was dead. The stars were shining, and the leaves rustled in the woods ever so mournful; and I heard an owl, away off, who-whooing about somebody that was dead, and a whippowill and a dog crying about somebody that was going to die; and the wind was trying to whisper something to me, and I couldn't make out what it was, and so it made the cold shivers run over me. Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving. I got so down-hearted and scared I did wish I had some company. Pretty soon a spider went crawling up my shoulder, and I flipped it off and it lit in the candle; and before I could budge it was all shriveled up. I didn't need anybody to tell me that that was an awful bad sign and would fetch me some bad luck, so I was scared and most shook the clothes off of me. I got up and turned around in my tracks three times and crossed my breast every time; and then I tied up a little lock of my hair with a thread to keep witches away. But I hadn't no confidence. You do that when you've lost a horseshoe that you've found, instead of nailing it up over the door, but I hadn't ever heard anybody say it was any way to keep off bad luck when you'd killed a spider. I set down again, a-shaking all over, and got out my pipe for a smoke; for the house was all as still as death now, and so the widow wouldn't know. Well, after a long time I heard the clock away off in the town go boom--boom--boom--twelve licks; and all still again--stiller than ever. Pretty soon I heard a twig snap down in the dark amongst the trees --something was a stirring. I set still and listened. Directly I could just barely hear a "me-yow! me-yow!" down there. That was good! Says I, "me-yow! me-yow!" as soft as I could, and then I put out the light and scrambled out of the window on to the shed. Then I slipped down to the ground and crawled in among the trees, and, sure enough, there was Tom Sawyer waiting for me.

Mark Twain" was the name used
"Mark Twain" was the name used by Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910) when he wrote
books. His father was a lawyer, but a poor one, who lived at Florida, Missouri. The family was so
poor that Samuel did not receive much teaching. He had to learn all that he could from the people
whom he met. His father died when he was very young, and then there was even less money than
before.
Many of the men in this part of America worked in the ships on the great River Mississippi, and
he did this himself at one time (1857).
Where did he find the name "Mark Twain"? It came from the great river itself. It was part of one
of the cries used by men who worked in the ships. When a man called "By the mark twain!" he meant
that the river was "two marks deep" there, that is to say, six feet deep ( "Twain" is an old form of the
work "Two".) Samuel Clemens often heard these words when he was young, and he used them as a
penname all his life.
During his work on the Mississippi he met travelers of all kinds, and this helped him a great deal
when he started to write. But the number of travelers became smaller when war started in America in
1861. Many of the great ships on the river stopped work. Samuel left then and went to Nevada with
his brother, who was at that time Governor of Nevada. There, near the town of Carson, Samuel
became a gold miner, but he never made much money at the time. He soon saw that life in the gold
mines was not for him. He also tried writing for the newspapers in Nevada, and this seemed more
hopeful. He found that he could write.
He went to Europe in 1867 and visited France and Italy. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon,
and two years later he was spending nearly all his time writing. Among his books is his own story
(1908).
He is now always known as Mark Twain, and many people do not even know that his family
name was Clemens. He traveled in America and in England, and went to Oxford in 1907. He was
one of the great American writers of the time, and could make his readers laugh - a thing which few
writers can do. He died in 1910.
1. "Mark Twain" was _________.
A. a famous American writer
B. name of a book
C. a great river in America
D. a large ship
2. As a child, Samuel did not get much education because _________.
A. his father died too early
B. the family was very poor
C. he disliked school very much
D. he could learn what he liked from the people he met
3. What gave him a great deal when he started writing? _______
A. His poor childhood
B. The Mississippi river
C. All kinds of travelers he met
D. His brother
4. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. Samuel loved writing from his early age
B. Samuel did not love writing at the beginning
C. his writings to the newspaper were successful
D. his brother encouraged him to write more
5. According to the writer of the passage, a good writer could _________.
A.write a lot for his readers
B. make a lot of money for his family
C. cause his readers to laugh
D. travel everywhere he wanted

The film is set in 1903,in Edwardian era London, and cleverly satirises the way in which society worships those who have money. The story causes the audience to reflect upon the mad irony that people are willing to do things basically for free in order to toady to those who have money, rather than for those who actually need their charity. If you're penniless, people don't really want to know you,let alone help you; but if you have money, then people will bend over backwards for you, even making it their business to seek you out. However, any satire on show here is only of the gentlest sort, and the whole affair is more taken over by whimsy.
