Sonnet So bright is the moon tonight,and so blue,But why is my heart so heavy,so cold?Oh my honey,how can you be that cruel?Left me ‘lone,thinking of you made me old.Where have all the old beautiful days gone?When you are so lovely,so temperate.What is known as happiness,I have none,The loss of you nothing can compensate.Won’t you ever come back again,my dear?Tell me that you still love me,care for me?At that time there will be nothing we fear.What would you then want,just a cup of tea?No matter what comes,darling,keep in heart,That I have loved you so deep,and so vast.This sonnet was written in my English literature class when I was a student in university.Days ago when I sorted out those old materials,I found it and an idea came to me.Why not post it in the forum?Everybody has his own word,and everyone wants himself heard,so why are you still keeping silent?Why not speak up and show yourself?Express yourself in a poem,a prose or even a novel if you like.All those who will make your voices heard,please follow me and let us start a wonderful journey to a splendid brave new world where we can better express ourselves in English.

SONNET 25 XXV
Let those who are in favour with their stars
Of public honour and proud titles boast,
Whilst I, whom fortune of such triumph bars
Unlook'd for joy in that I honour most.
Great princes' favourites their fair leaves spread
But as the marigold at the sun's eye,
And in themselves their pride lies buried,
For at a frown they in their glory die.
The painful warrior famoused for fight,
After a thousand victories once foiled,
Is from the book of honour razed quite,
And all the rest forgot for which he toiled:
Then happy I, that love and am beloved,
Where I may not remove nor be removed.

In this sonnet,Shakespeare has a profound meditation on the destructive power of time and the eternal beauty brought forth by poetry to the one he loves.A nice summer's day is usually transient,but the beauty in poetry can last for ever.Thus Shakespare has a faith in the permanence of poetry.

THE SONNETS
by William Shakespeare
From fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thy self thy foe,to thy sweet self too cruel:
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament,
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content,
And tender churl mak'st waste in niggarding:
Pity the world,or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due,by the grave and thee

就应把记忆交给娇嫩的后嗣;

With How Sad Steps,O Moon

Love makes the world go around.
Love to us human is what water to fish.Love shines the most beautiful light of humanity,we born in it,we live by it.Too often we take it as granted,but we should know love is a priceless gift we should cherish.But how to cherish the love?I have heard a saying :the quickest way to receive love is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
It is important for us to learn to love as the first class in our life.Only when you know how to love than you will be a real man in this world.Love brings us warmth in the fearful coldness,love brings us bright when life gets hard and dark.Love brings us confidence toward life when we are tired out and want to give up.
Love deserves all the admiring words,and love is even beyond the life and death.That is what love is all about in my eyes.

  Sonnet 18
  Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
  Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
  Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
  And summer's lease hath all too short a date. 4
  Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
  And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
  And every fair from fair sometime declines,
  By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm’d; 8
  But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
  Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st.
  Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
  When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st. 12
  So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
  So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
  常常又遮暗他的金色的脸;
  你不会失去你的俊美的仪容;
  1. a summer's day
  2. temperate
  5. sometime
  the eye of heaven 指太阳.
  6. his its,指太阳的.
And every fair sometime declines from fair.
  8. 该行的正常语序是untrimmed by chance or nature's changing course,以untrimmed为中心词的过去分词短语,修饰第7行中的第2个fair.
  9. fade
  10. lose possession of 失去对.
  12. line

The Italian sonnets included two parts.First,the octave (two quatrains),which describe a problem,followed by a sestet (two tercets),which gives the resolution to it.Typically,the ninth line creates a "turn" or volta which signals the move from proposition to resolution.Even in sonnets that don't strictly follow the problem/resolution structure,the ninth line still often marks a "turn" by signaling a change in the tone,mood,or stance of the poem.
In the sonnets of Giacomo da Lentini,the octave rhymed a-b-a-b,a-b-a-b; later,the a-b-b-a,a-b-b-a pattern became the standard for Italian sonnets.For the sestet there were two different possibilities,c-d-e-c-d-e and c-d-c-c-d-c.In time,other variants on this rhyming scheme were introduced such as c-d-c-d-c-d.
The first known sonnets in English,written by Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard,Earl of Surrey,used this Italian scheme,as did sonnets by later English poets including John Milton,Thomas Gray,William Wordsworth and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.Early twentieth-century American poet Edna St.Vincent Millay also wrote most of her sonnets using the Italian form.
English (Shakespearean) sonnet
Henry Howard,Earl of Surrey,c.1542 by Hans Holbein
William Shakespeare,in the famous "Chandos" portrait.Artist and authenticity unconfirmed.National Portrait Gallery (UK).See also:Shakespeare's sonnets
Soon after the introduction of the Italian sonnet,English poets began to develop a fully native form.While English sonnets were introduced by Thomas Wyatt in the early 16th century,his sonnets and those of his contemporary the Earl of Surrey were chiefly translations from the Italian of Petrarch and the French of Ronsard and others.While Wyatt introduced the sonnet into English,it was Surrey who gave them the rhyming meter,and division into quatrains that now characterizes the English sonnet.Having previously circulated in manuscript,both poets' sonnets were first published in Richard Tottel's Songes and Sonnetts,better known as Tottel's Miscellany (1557).
It was,however,Sir Philip Sidney's sequence Astrophel and Stella (1591) that started the English vogue for sonnet sequences:the next two decades saw sonnet sequences by William Shakespeare,Edmund Spenser,Michael Drayton,Samuel Daniel,Fulke Greville,William Drummond of Hawthornden,and many others.These sonnets were all essentially inspired by the Petrarchan tradition,and generally treat of the poet's love for some woman; with the exception of Shakespeare's sequence.The form is often named after Shakespeare,not because he was the first to write in this form but because he became its most famous practitioner.The form consists of fourteen lines structured as three quatrains and a couplet.The third quatrain generally introduces an unexpected sharp thematic or imagistic "turn"; the volta.In Shakespeare's sonnets,however,the volta usually comes in the couplet,and usually summarizes the theme of the poem or introduces a fresh new look at the theme.With only a rare exception,the meter is iambic pentameter,although there is some accepted metrical flexibility (e.g.,lines ending with an extra-syllable feminine rhyme,or a trochaic foot rather than an iamb,particularly at the beginning of a line).The usual rhyme scheme is end-rhymed a-b-a-b,c-d-c-d,e-f-e-f,g-g.
This example,Shakespeare's Sonnet 116,illustrates the form (with some typical variances one may expect when reading an Elizabethan-age sonnet with modern eyes):
Let me not to the marriage of true minds (a)
Admit impediments,love is not love (b)*
Which alters when it alteration finds,(a)
Or bends with the remover to remove.(b)*
O no,it is an ever fix茅d mark (c)**
That looks on tempests and is never shaken; (d)***
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,(c)
Whose worth's unknown although his height be taken.(d)***
Love's not time's fool,though rosy lips and cheeks (e)
Within his bending sickle's compass come,(f)*
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,(e)
But bears it out even to the edge of doom:(f)*
If this be error and upon me proved,(g)*
I never writ,nor no man ever loved.(g)*
* PRONUNCIATION/RHYME:Note changes in pronunciation since composition.
** PRONUNCIATION/METER:"Fixed" pronounced as two-syllables,"fix-ed."
*** RHYME/METER:Feminine-rhyme-ending,eleven-syllable alternative.
The Prologue to Romeo and Juliet is also a sonnet,as is Romeo and Juliet's first exchange in Act One,Scene Five,lines 104-117,beginning with "If I profane with my unworthiest hand" (104) and ending with "Then move not while my prayer's effect I take." (117).[9]
In the 17th century,the sonnet was adapted to other purposes,with John Donne and George Herbert writing religious sonnets,and John Milton using the sonnet as a general meditative poem.Both the Shakespearean and Petrarchan rhyme schemes were popular throughout this period,as well as many variants.
The fashion for the sonnet went out with the Restoration,and hardly any sonnets were written between 1670 and Wordsworth's time.However,sonnets came back strongly with the French Revolution.Wordsworth himself wrote several sonnets,of which the best-known are "The world is too much with us" and the sonnet to Milton; his sonnets were essentially modelled on Milton's.Keats and Shelley also wrote major sonnets; Keats's sonnets used formal and rhetorical patterns inspired partly by Shakespeare,and Shelley innovated radically,creating his own rhyme scheme for the sonnet "Ozymandias".Sonnets were written throughout the 19th century,but,apart from Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and the sonnets of Dante Gabriel Rossetti,there were few very successful traditional sonnets.Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote several major sonnets,often in sprung rhythm,of which the greatest is "The Windhover," and also several sonnet variants such as the 10½-line curtal sonnet "Pied Beauty" and the 24-line caudate sonnet "That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire." By the end of the 19th century,the sonnet had been adapted into a general-purpose form of great flexibility.
This flexibility was extended even further in the 20th century.Among the major poets of the early Modernist period,Robert Frost,Edna St.Vincent Millay and E.E.Cummings all used the sonnet regularly.William Butler Yeats wrote the major sonnet Leda and the Swan,which used half rhymes.Wilfred Owen's sonnet Anthem for Doomed Youth was another sonnet of the early 20th century.W.H.Auden wrote two sonnet sequences and several other sonnets throughout his career,and widened the range of rhyme-schemes used considerably.Auden also wrote one of the first unrhymed sonnets in English,"The Secret Agent" (1928).Half-rhymed,unrhymed,and even unmetrical sonnets have been very popular since 1950; perhaps the best works in the genre are Seamus Heaney's Glanmore Sonnets and Clearances,both of which use half rhymes,and Geoffrey Hill's mid-period sequence 'An Apology for the Revival of Christian Architecture in England'.The 1990s saw something of a formalist revival,however,and several traditional sonnets have been written in the past decade.

Sonnet 18
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date,
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance,or nature's changing course,untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this,and this gives life to thee.

Sonnet 18
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,狂风会把五月的花苞吹落地
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.夏天也嫌太短促,匆匆而过;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; 常常又遮暗他的金色的脸;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance,or nature's changing course,untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st.你不会失去你的俊美的仪容;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.如果你在这不朽的诗句里获得了永生;
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,只要人们能呼吸,眼睛能看东西,
So long lives this,and this gives life to thee.

他那金彩的脸色也会被遮暗;
被时机或者自然的代谢所摧残;
你永远不会失去你美的仪态;
你将在不朽的诗中与时间同在;

The themes that suurfaced in the sonnet are love.This is a love poem where the poet exalts the one he loves.He doesn't want her beauty to be compared to a transitory period like summer.Love is a great motivator.He decides his beloved is more beautiful.Transcience of time is also the themes of Sonnet 18.The poet does not want his beloved 's beauty to fade with time.To him,her beauty must be like the eternal summer.The best way to preserve her beauty is to capture it in verse so that her beauty grow'st' as eternal lines with time.
Beauty is the themes of Sonnet 18.Beauty should be appreciated.Should his beloved be compared to a summer's day?Summer is only temporary and has too short a lease.Sometimes,the sun shines too brightly,making the heat in summer hard to bear.Beauty can be easily destroyed by accident or fades with the passing of time.Beautiful things are temporary.Nothing is permanent on earth.
Other themes included youth and youthfulness.The poet is adamant that his beloved's beauty will not disappear.She will be able to live forever once she is the subject of his poem.In this way,the beauty of the poet's beloved will be transfixed forever in the minds and hearts of all its readers.Her beauty will continue to exist as long as men continue to read this poem about her.

Shakespeare - Sonnet 18 This sonnet is by far one of the most interesting poems in the book. Of Shakespeare's sonnets in the text, this is one of the most moving lyric poems that I have ever read. There is great use of imagery within the sonnet. This is not to say that the rest of the poems in the book were not good, but this to me was the best, most interesting, and most beautiful of them. It is mainly due to the simplicity and loveliness of the poem抯 praise of the beloved woman that it has guaranteed its place in my mind, and heart.The speaker of the poem opens with a question that is addressed to the beloved, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" This question is comparing her to the summer time of the year. It is during this time when the flowers are blooming, trees are full of leaves, the weather is warm, and it is generally thought of as an enjoyable time during the year. The following eleven lines in the poem are also dedicated to similar comparisons between the beloved and summer days. In lines 2 and 3, the speaker explains what mainly separates the young woman from the summer's day: she is "more lovely and more temperate." (Line 2) Summer's days tend toward extremes: they are sometimes shaken by "rough winds" (line3) which happens and is not always as welcoming as the woman. However in line 4, the speaker gives the feeling again that the summer months are often to short by saying, "And summer抯 lease hath too short a date." In the summer days, the sun, "the eye of heaven" (line 5), often shines "too hot," or too dim, "his gold complexion dimmed" (line 6), that is there are many hot days during the summer but soon the sun begins to set earlier at night because autumn is approaching. Summer is moving along too quickly for the speaker, its time here needs to be longer, and it also means that the chilling of autumn is coming upon us because the flowers will soon be withering, as "every fair from fair sometime declines." (Line 7) The final portion of the sonnet tells how the beloved differs from the summer in various respects. Her beauty will be one that lasts forever, "Thy eternal summer shall not fade." (Line 9), and never end or die. In the couplet at the bottom, the speaker explains how that the beloved's beauty will accomplish this everlasting life unlike a summer. And it is because her beauty is kept alive in this poem, which will last forever. It will live "as long as men can breathe or eyes can see." (Line 13)On the surface, the poem is on the surface simply a statement of praise about the beauty of the beloved woman and perhaps summer to the speaker is sometimes too unpleasant with the extremes of windiness and heat that go along with it. However, the beloved in the poem is always mild and temperate by her nature and nothing at all like the summer. It is incidentally brought to life as being described as the "eye of heaven" with its "gold complexion". The imagery throughout the sonnet is simple and attainable to the reader, which is a key factor in understanding the poem. Then the speaker begins to describe the summer again with the "darling buds of May" giving way to the " summer抯 lease", springtime moving into the warmth of the summer. The speaker then starts to promise to talk about this beloved, that is so great and awing that she is to live forever in this sonnet. The beloved is so great that the speaker will even go as far as to say that, "So long as men breathe, or eyes can see," the woman will live. The language is almost too simple when comparing it to the rest of Shakespeare抯 sonnets; it is not heavy with alliteration or verse, and nearly every line is its own self-contained clause, almost every line ends with some punctuation that effects a pause. But it is this that makes Sonnet18 stand out for the rest in the book. It is much more attainable to understand and it allows for the reader to fully understand how great this beloved truly is because she may live forever in it. An important theme of the sonnet, as it is an important theme throughout much of the poetry in general, is the power of the speaker's poem to defy time and last forever. And so by doing this it is then carrying the beauty of the beloved down to future generations and eventually for al of eternity. The beloved's "eternal summer" shall not fade precisely because it is embodied in the sonnet: "So long as men can breathe or eyes can see," (line 13) the speaker writes in the couplet, "So long lives this, and this gives life to thee."(Line 14) With this the speaker is able to accomplish what many have done in poetry and that is to give the gift of an eternal life to someone that they believe is special and outshines everyone else around them. Perhaps it is because of a physical beauty that the speaker see, but I believe that it is more because of the internal beauty as seen in line 2, "Thou art more lovely and more temperate", that the beloved is deserving to live on forever.
