Demon or bird! (said the boy"s soul,)

Is it indeed toward your mate you sing? or is it really to me?

For I, that was a child, my tongue"s use sleeping, now I have heard you,

Now in a moment I know what I am for, I awake,

原文

Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking

by Walt Whitman

Out of the cradle endlessly rocking,

Out of the mocking-bird"s throat, the musical shuttle,

Out of the Ninth-month midnight,

Over the sterile sands and the fields beyond, where the child leaving his bed wander"d alone, bareheaded, barefoot,Down from the shower"d halo,

Up from the mystic play of shadows twining and twisting as if they were alive,

Out from the patches of briers and blackberries,

From the memories of the bird that chanted to me,

From your memories sad brother, from the fitful risings and fallings I heard,

From under that yellow half-moon late-risen and swollen as if with tears,

From those beginning notes of yearning and love there in the mist, From the thousand responses of my heart never to cease, From the myriad thence-arous"d words,

From the word stronger and more delicious than any,

From such as now they start the scene revisiting,

As a flock, twittering, rising, or overhead passing,

Borne hither, ere all eludes me, hurriedly,

A man, yet by these tears a little boy again,

Throwing myself on the sand, confronting the waves,

I, chanter of pains and joys, uniter of here and hereafter,

Taking all hints to use them, but swiftly leaping beyond them,

A reminiscence sing.

Once Paumanok,

When the lilac-scent was in the air and Fifth-month grass was growing,

Up this seashore in some briers,

Two feather"d guests from Alabama, two together,

And their nest, and four light-green eggs spotted with brown,

And every day the he-bird to and fro near at hand,

And every day the she-bird crouch"d on her nest, silent, with bright eyes,

And every day I, a curious boy, never too close, never disturbing them,

Cautiously peering, absorbing, translating.

Shine! shine! shine!

Pour down your warmth, great sun!

While we bask, we two together.

Two together!

Winds blow south, or winds blow north,

Day come white, or niqht come black,

Home, or rivers and mountains from home,

Singing all time, minding no time,

While we two keep together.

Till of a sudden,

May-be kill"d, unknown to her mate,

One forenoon the she-bird crouch"d not on the nest,

Nor return"d that afternoon, nor the next,

Nor ever appear"d again.

And thenceforward all summer in the sound of the sea,

And at night under the full of the moon in calmer weather,

Over the hoarse surging of the sea,

Or flitting from brier to brier by day,

I saw, I heard at intervals the remaining one, the he-bird,

The solitary guest from Alabama.

Blow! blow! blow!

Blow up sea-winds along Paumanok"s shore;

I wait and I wait till you blow my mate to me.

Yes, when the stars glisten"d,

All night long on the prong of a moss-scallop"d stake,

Down almost amid the slapping waves,

Sat the lone singer wonderful causing tears.

He call"d on his mate,

He pour"d forth the meanings which I of all men know.

Yes my brother I know,

The rest might not, but I have treasur"d every note,

For more than once dimly down to the beach gliding,

Silent, avoiding the moonbeams, blending myself with the shadows,

Recalling now the obscure shapes, the echoes, the sounds and sights after their sorts,

The white arms out in the breakers tirelessly tossing,

I, with bare feet, a child, the wind wafting my hair,

Listen"d long and long.

Listen"d to keep, to sing, now translating the notes,

Following you my brother.

Soothe! soothe! soothe!

Close on its wave soothes the wave behind,

And again another behind embracing and lapping, every one close,

But my love soothes not me, not me.

Low hangs the moon, it rose late,

It is lagging--O I think it is heavy with love, with love.

O madly the sea pushes upon the land,

With love, with love.

O night! do I not see my love fluttering out among the breakers?

What is that little black thing I see there in the white?

Loud! loud! loud!

Loud I call to you, my love!

Hiqh and clear I shoot my voice over the waves,

Surely you must know who is here, is here,

You must know who I am, my love.

Low-hanging moon!

What is that dusky spot in your brown yellow?

O it is the shape, the shape of my mate!

O moon do not keep her from me any longer.

Land! land! O land!

Whichever way I turn, 0 I think you could give me my mate back again if you only would,

For I am almost sure I see her dimly whichever way I look.

O rising stars!

Perhaps the one I want so much will rise, will rise with some of you.

O throat! 0 trembling throat!

Sound clearer through the atmosphere!

Pierce the woods, the earth,

Somewhere listening to catch you must be the one I want.

Shake out carols!

Solitary here, the niqht"s carols!

Carols of lonesome love! death"s carols!

Carols under that lagging, yellow, waning moon!

O under that moon where she droops almost down into the sea!

O reckless despairing carols.

But soft! sink low!

Soft! let me just murmur,

And do you wait a moment you husky-nois"d sea,

For somewhere I believe I heard my mate responding to me,

So faint, I must be still, be still to listen,

But not altogether still, for then she miqht not come immediately to me.

Hither my love!

Here I am! here!

With this just-sustain"d note I announce myself to you,

This gentle call is for you my love, for you.

Do not be decoy"d elsewhere,

That is the whistle of the wind, it is not my voice,

That is the fluttering, the fluttering of the spray,

Those are the shadows of leaves.

O darkness! 0 in vain!

0 I am very sick and sorrowful.

O brown halo in the sky near the moon, drooping upon the sea!

O troubled reflection in the sea!

O throat! 0 throbbing heart!

And I singing uselessly, uselessly all the niqht.

0 past! 0 happy life! 0 songs of joy!

In the air, in the woods, over fields,

Loved! loved! loved! loved! loved!

But my mate no more, no more with me!

We two together no more.

The aria sinking,

All else continuing, the stars shining,

The winds blowing, the notes of the bird continuous echoing,

With angry moans the fierce old mother incessantly moaning,

On the sands of Paumanok"s shore gray and rustling,

The yellow half-moon enlarged, sagging down, drooping,

the face of the sea almost touching,

The boy ecstatic, with his bare feet the waves, with his hair

the atmosphere dallying,

The love in the heart long pent, now loose, now at last

tumultuously bursting,

The aria"s meaning, the ears, the soul, swiftly depositing,

The strange tears down the cheeks coursing,

The colloquy there, the trio, each uttering,

The undertone, the savage old mother incessantly crying,

To the boy"s soul"s questions sullenly timing, some drown"d secret hissing,

To the outsetting bard.

Demon or bird! (said the boy"s soul,)

Is it indeed toward your mate you sing? or is it really to me?

For I, that was a child, my tongue"s use sleeping, now I have heard you,

Now in a moment I know what I am for, I awake,

And already a thousand singers, a thousand songs, clearer, louder and more sorrowful than yours,

A thousand warbling echoes have started to life within me,never to die.

O you singer solitary, singing by yourself, projecting me,

O solitary me listening, never more shall I cease

perpetuating you,

Never more shall I escape, never more the reverberations,

Never more the cries of unsatisfied love be absent from me,

Never again leave me to be the peaceful child I was before what there in the night,

By the sea under the yellow and sagging moon,

The messenger there arous"d, the fire, the sweet hell within,

The unknown want, the destiny of me.

O give me the clew! (it lurks in the night here somewhere,)

O if I am to have so much, let me have more!

A word then, (for I will conquer it,)

The word final, superior to all,

Subtle, sent up--what is it?--I listen;

Are you whispering it, and have been all the time, you sea-waves?

Is that it from your liquid rims and wet sands?

Whereto answering, the sea,

Delaying not, hurrying not,

Whisper"d me through the night, and very plainly before daybreak,

Lisp"d to me the low and delicious word death,

And again death, death, death, death,

Hissing melodious, neither like the bird nor like my arous"s child"s heart,

But edging near as privately for me rustling at my feet,

Creeping thence steadily up to my ears and laving me softly all over,

Death, death, death, death, death.

Which I do not forget,

But fuse the song of my dusky demon and brother,

That he sang to me in the moonlight on Paumanok"s gray

beach,

With the thousand responsive songs at random,

My own songs awaked from that hour,

And with them the key, the word up from the waves,

The word of the sweetest song and all songs,

That strong and delicious word which, creeping to my feet,

(Or like some old crone rocking the cradle, swathed in sweet garments, bending aside,)

The sea whisper"d me.

You hear it all along the river. You hear it, loud and strong, from the rowers as they urge the junk with its high stern, the mast lashed alongside, down the swift running stream. You hear it from the trackers, a more breathless chant, as they pull desperately against the current, half a dozen of them perhaps if they are taking up wupan, a couple of hundred if they are hauling a splendid junk, its square sail set, over a rapid. On the junk, a man stands amidships beating a drum incessantly to guide their efforts, and they pull with all their strength, like men possessed, bent double; and sometimes in the extremity of their travail they craw on the ground, on all fours, like the beasts of the field. They strain, strain fiercely, against the pitiless might of the stream. The leader goes up and down the line and when he sees one who is not putting all his will into the task he brings down his split bamboo on the naked back. Each one must do his utmost or the labour of all is vain. And still they sing a vehement, eager chant, the chant of the turbulent waters. I do not know words can describe what there is in it of effort. It serves to express the straining heart, the breaking muscles, and at the same time the indomitable spirit of man which overes the pitiless force of nature. Though the rope may part and the great junk swing back, in the end the rapid will be passed; and at the close of the weary day there is the hearty meal... But the most agonizing song is the song of the coolies who bring the great bales from the junk up the steep steps to the town wall. Up and down they go, endlessly, and endless as their toil rises their rhythmic cry. He, aw --ah, oh. They are barefoot and naked to the waist. The sweat pours down their faces and their song is a groan of pain. It is a sigh of despair. It is heart-rending. It is hardly human. It is the cry of souls in infinite distress, only just musical, and that last note is the ultimate sob of humanity. Life is too hard, too cruel, and this is the final despairing protest. That is the song of the river.

It was New Years night. An aged man was standing at a window

It was New Year"s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal——the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and remorse. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts. The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads——one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and where devils and poisonous snakes hissed and crawled. He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, "O youth, return! O my father, place me once more at the entrance to life, and I"ll choose the better way!" But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away. He was the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His remorse, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered on life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were now honoured and happy on this New Year"s night. The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents" early love for him. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven where his father live. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: "Come back, my early days! Come back!" And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year"s Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land. Those who still linger on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain: "O youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!"

Introduction to Classical MusicClassical music is probably more familiar than we might at first imagine. Indeed, nowadays it is all around us, whether it be in restaurants, supermarkets, lifts, for advertising or as theme and incidental music on television. A great deal of film music either directly uses or draws from the "classical" tradition; a good example of the former might be "2001: Space Odyssey", and of the latter, the many scores John Williams has composed in recent years for such blockbusters as the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies. In the vast and wide-ranging world of "classical" music there is truly something there for everyone - pieces which once discovered represent the start of an exciting and irresistible journey which will provide a lifetime"s listening pleasure. For example, those who are particularly excited by hearing instrumentalists working at full stretch will thrill to the likes of Liszt and Paganini, or if something a little more reserved and self-contained is required, the chamber music of Haydn or Mozart would be a good starting point. If a full symphony orchestra in overdrive is more to your taste then Tchaikovsky or Richard Strauss could well fit the bill, whereas those who have already warmed to Vivaldi"s "Four Seasons" might well try the music of some of the great Italian"s contemporaries such as Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach or Domenico Scarlatti. Whatever your tastes may be, there has never been a better time to start building a "classical" music collection on CD. Any attempt to define what is meant literally by the term "classical" music is fraught with difficulty. How does one encapsulate in just a few words a musical tradition which encompasses such infinite varieties of style and expression, from the monastic intonings of Gregorian chant to the laid-back jazz inflections of Gershwin"s Rhapsody in Blue, from the elegant poise of Mozart"s Eine kleine Nachtmusik to the despairing, heightened emotionalism of Tchaikovsky"s "Pathetique" Symphony? One is treading on very dangerous ground indeed if one pre-supposes that it is simply "superior" to other musical types such as popular, jazz, rock and the like, let alone the music of other cultures. In general "popular" music may be as clear in expression as the longer examples of "classical" music. One important difference, however, lies in the logical connection that exists in "classical " music between the beginning and end, with the latter a logical extension and development of the former. "Popular" music, on the other hand, tends to present its material without development, the music ending when interest is exhausted. Sadly, whilst "classical" music is socially undivisive in itself, it has unfortunately become associated in most people"s minds with the intellectual elite. Even now, and with certain honourable exceptions, the attending of a "live" concert can be an intimidating (not to say costly) experience for the uninitiated, especially in that most jealously guarded of establishments, the opera house. The wonderful thing about the technological age in which we live, and particularly the advent of the compact disc, is that we can bypass all irrelevant social and intellectual pretence, and enjoy in the comfort of our own home (often at far less cost) some of the finest music ever composed. With such a breathtaking variety of material available, it is an awesome task to know just where to begin your disc collection, and as a result expensive mistakes are often made as tempting looking purchases turn out to be something of a disappointment. This is where the Naxos catalogue really comes into its own, and where it is hoped this guide will help prospective purchasers to make an informed choice about the kind of music they are likely to enjoy. The Naxos label provides a library of high quality performances of music by the great masters in modern digital sound; accompanied by authoritative and user-friendly booklet notes and at the lowest possible price. There are already nearly 600 titles from which to choose, and with new releases emerging at the rate of about eight every month, even the enthusiastic collector is well and truly catered for. With every historical period and genre covered, there is something in the Naxos catalogue for everyone, especially those who wish to build a truly representative collection of the central masterworks in the "classical" tradition.

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of three major Chinese holidays, along with the Spring and Moon Festivals. Of the three, it is possibly the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C.The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a minister in the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himself into a river. Townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water。

Context Jonathan Swift, son of the English lawyer Jonathan Swift the elder, was born in Dublin, Ireland, on November 30, 1667. He grew up there in the care of his uncle before attending Trinity College at the age of fourteen, where he stayed for seven years, graduating in 1688. In that year, he became the secretary of Sir William Temple, an English politician and member of the Whig party. In 1694, he took religious orders in the Church of Ireland and then spent a year as a country parson. He then spent further time in the service of Temple before returning to Ireland to become the chaplain of the earl of Berkeley. Meanwhile, he had begun to write satires on the political and religious corruption surrounding him, working on A Tale of a Tub, which supports the position of the Anglican Church against its critics on the left and the right, and The Battle of the Books, which argues for the supremacy of the classics against modern thought and literature. He also wrote a number of political pamphlets in favor of the Whig party. In 1709 he went to London to campaign for the Irish church but was unsuccessful. After some conflicts with the Whig party, mostly because of Swift"s strong allegiance to the church, he became a member of the more conservative Tory party in 1710. Unfortunately for Swift, the Tory government fell out of power in 1714 and Swift, despite his fame for his writings, fell out of favor. Swift, who had been hoping to be assigned a position in the Church of England, instead returned to Dublin, where he became the dean of St. Patrick"s. During his brief time in England, Swift had become friends with writers such as Alexander Pope, and during a meeting of their literary club, the Martinus Scriblerus Club, they decided to write satires of modern learning. The third voyage of Gulliver"s Travels is assembled from the work Swift did during this time. However, the final work was not completed until 1726, and the narrative of the third voyage was actually the last one completed. After his return to Ireland, Swift became a staunch supporter of the Irish against English attempts to weaken their economy and political power, writing pamphlets such as the satirical A Modest Proposal, in which he suggests that the Irish problems of famine and overpopulation could be easily solved by having the babies of poor Irish subjects sold as delicacies to feed the rich. Gulliver"s Travels was a controversial work when it was first published in 1726. In fact, it was not until almost ten years after its first printing that the book appeared with the entire text that Swift had originally intended it to have. Ever since, editors have excised many of the passages, particularly the more caustic ones dealing with bodily functions. Even without those passages, however, Gulliver"s Travels serves as a biting satire, and Swift ensures that it is both humorous and critical, constantly attacking British and European society through its descriptions of imaginary countries. Late in life, Swift seemed to many observers to become even more caustic and bitter than he had been. Three years before his death, he was declared unable to care for himself, and guardians were appointed. Based on these facts and on a comparison between Swift"s fate and that of his character Gulliver, some people have concluded that he gradually became insane and that his insanity was a natural outgrowth of his indignation and outrage against humankind. However, the truth seems to be that Swift was suddenly incapacitated by a paralytic stroke late in life, and that prior to this incident his mental capacities were unimpaired. Gulliver"s Travels is about a specific set of political conflicts, but if it were nothing more than that it would long ago have been forgotten. The staying power of the work comes from its depiction of the human condition and its often despairing, but occasionally hopeful, sketch of the possibilities for humanity to rein in its baser instincts.

It serves to express the straining heart, the breaking muscles, and at the same time the indomitable spirit of man which overcomes the pitiless force of nature. 扩展:动物幼崽词汇 duck(鸭)--duckling eagle(鹰)--eaglet eel(鳗鱼)--elver elephant(大象)--calf elk(驼鹿)--calf ferret(白釉)--kit1 fish(鱼)--fry fox(狐狸)--cub / kit frog(青蛙)--tadpole giraffe(长颈鹿)--calf goat(山羊)--kid goose(鹅)--gosling hare(野兔)--leveret hartebeest(狷羚)--calf hawk(隼)--chick / eyas horse(马)--foal / colt / filly kangaroo(袋鼠)--joey leopard(豹)--cub lion(狮子)--cub mink(水貂)--kit owl(猫头鹰)--owlet peafowl(孔雀)--peachick 注解:peacock 指雄孔雀,peahen 指雌孔雀 pheasant(雉鸡)--chick pig(猪)--piglet/ porkling / gilt2 pigeon(鸽子)--squab / squeaker pike(梭子鱼)--pickerel possum(负鼠)--joey rabbit(兔子)--kitten rat(家鼠)--pup rhinoceros(犀牛)--calf roedeer(狍子)--kid salmon(三文鱼)--parr / smolt seal(海豹)--calf / pup sheep(绵羊)--lamb skunk(臭鼬)--kitten spider(蜘蛛)--spiderling swan(天鹅)--cygnet tiger(虎)--cub toad3(癞蛤蟆) --tadpole wallaby(沙袋鼠)--joey walrus(海象)--cub weasel(黄鼠狼)--kit whale(鲸)--calf wolf(狼)--cub / pup / whelp zebra(斑马)--foal相关 文章 : 1.

1)I agree with you to some degree. (意思:我同意你的一些意见)2)Criticism is not lost on you to some degree. 1)To some extent you are correct. (意思:你其实还不很正确)2)The criticism is to some extent justified. 1)To some degree he is a good person. (意思:他这人挺好,主要看他好的方面)2)To some extent he is a good person.

Darkness by Lord Byron I had a dream, which was not all a dream. The bright sun was extinguish"d, and the stars Did wander darkling in the eternal space, Rayless, and pathless, and the icy earth Swung blind and blackening in the moonless air; Morn came and went--and came, and brought no day, And men forgot their passions in the dread Of this their desolation; and all hearts Were chill"d into a selfish prayer for light: And they did live by watchfires--and the thrones, The palaces of crowned kings--the huts, The habitations of all things which dwell, Were burnt for beacons; cities were consum"d, And men were gather"d round their blazing homes To look once more into each other"s face; Happy were those who dwelt within the eye Of the volcanos, and their mountain-torch: A fearful hope was all the world contain"d; Forests were set on fire--but hour by hour They fell and faded--and the crackling trunks Extinguish"d with a crash--and all was black. The brows of men by the despairing light Wore an unearthly aspect, as by fits The flashes fell upon them; some lay down And hid their eyes and wept; and some did rest Their chins upon their clenched hands, and smil"d; And others hurried to and fro, and fed Their funeral piles with fuel, and look"d up With mad disquietude on the dull sky, The pall of a past world; and then again With curses cast them down upon the dust, And gnash"d their teeth and howl"d: the wild birds shriek"d And, terrified, did flutter on the ground, And flap their useless wings; the wildest brutes Came tame and tremulous; and vipers crawl"d And twin"d themselves among the multitude, Hissing, but stingless--they were slain for food. And War, which for a moment was no more, Did glut himself again: a meal was bought With blood, and each sate sullenly apart Gorging himself in gloom: no love was left; All earth was but one thought--and that was death Immediate and inglorious; and the pang Of famine fed upon all entrails--men Died, and their bones were tombless as their flesh; The meagre by the meagre were devour"d, Even dogs assail"d their masters, all save one, And he was faithful to a corse, and kept The birds and beasts and famish"d men at bay, Till hunger clung them, or the dropping dead Lur"d their lank jaws; himself sought out no food, But with a piteous and perpetual moan, And a quick desolate cry, licking the hand Which answer"d not with a caress--he died. The crowd was famish"d by degrees; but two Of an enormous city did survive, And they were enemies: they met beside The dying embers of an altar-place Where had been heap"d a mass of holy things For an unholy usage; they rak"d up, And shivering scrap"d with their cold skeleton hands The feeble ashes, and their feeble breath Blew for a little life, and made a flame Which was a mockery; then they lifted up Their eyes as it grew lighter, and beheld Each other"s aspects--saw, and shriek"d, and died-- Even of their mutual hideousness they died, Unknowing who he was upon whose brow Famine had written Fiend. The world was void, The populous and the powerful was a lump, Seasonless, herbless, treeless, manless, lifeless-- A lump of death--a chaos of hard clay. The rivers, lakes and ocean all stood still, And nothing stirr"d within their silent depths; Ships sailorless lay rotting on the sea, And their masts fell down piecemeal: as they dropp"d They slept on the abyss without a surge-- The waves were dead; the tides were in their grave, The moon, their mistress, had expir"d before; The winds were wither"d in the stagnant air, And the clouds perish"d; Darkness had no need Of aid from them--She was the Universe.

11. W: I ran into Sally the other day. I could hardly recognize her. Do you remember her from high school? M: Yeah, she was a little out of shape back then. Well, has she lost a lot of weight? Q: What does the man remember of Sally? 12. W: We donu2019t seem to have a reservation for you, sir. Iu2019m sorry. M: But my secretary said that she had reserved a room for me here. I phoned her from the airport this morning just before I got on board the plane. Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place? 13. W: What would you do if you were in my place? M: If Paul were my son, Iu2019d just not worry. Now that his teacher is giving him extra help and he"s working hard himself, heu2019s sure to do well in the next exam. Q: Whatu2019s the manu2019s suggestion to the woman? 14. M: Youu2019ve had your hands full and have been overworked during the last two weeks. I think you really need to go out and get some fresh air and sunshine. W: You are right. Thatu2019s just what Iu2019m thinking about. Q: What is the woman most probably going to do? 15. W: Hello, John. How are you feeling now? I hear youu2019ve been ill. M: They must have confused me with my twin brother Rods. Heu2019s been sick all week, but Iu2019ve never felt better in my life. Q: What do we learn about the man? 16. M: Did you really give away all your furniture when you moved into the new house last month? W: Just the useless pieces, as Iu2019m planning to purchase a new set from Italy for the sitting room only. Q: What does the woman mean? 17. M: Iu2019ve brought back your Oxford Companion to English Literature. I thought you might use it for your paper. Sorry not to have returned it earlier. W: I was wondering where that book was. Q: What can we infer from the conversation? 18. W: To tell the truth, Tony, it never occurs to me that you are an athlete. M: Oh, really? Most people who meet me, including some friends of mine, donu2019t think so either. Q: What do we learn from the conversation? Long Conversations Conversation 1 M: Mary, I hope you"re packed and ready to leave. W: Yes, Iu2019m packed, but not quite ready. I canu2019t find my passport. M: Your passport? Thatu2019s the one thing you mustnu2019t leave behind. W: I know. I havenu2019t lost it. Iu2019ve packed it, but I canu2019t remember which bag itu2019s in. M: Well, you have to find it at the airport. Come on, the taxi is waiting. W: Did you say taxi? I thought we were going in your car. M: Yes, well, I have planned to, but Iu2019ll explain later. Youu2019ve got to be there in an hour. W: The plane doesnu2019t leave for two hours. Anyway, Iu2019m ready to go now. M: Now, you"re taking just one case, is that right? W: No, there is one in the hall as well. M: Gosh, what a lot of stuff! You"re taking enough for a month instead of a week. W: Well, you canu2019t depend on the weather. It might be cold. M: Itu2019s never cold in Rome. Certainly not in May. Come on, we really must go. W: Right, we"re ready. Weu2019ve got the bags, Iu2019m sure there"s no need to rush. M: There is. I asked the taxi driver to wait two minutes, not twenty. W: Look, Iu2019m supposed to be going away to relax. You"re making me nervous. M: Well, I want you to relax on holiday, but you canu2019t relax yet. W: OK, I promise not to relax, at least not until we get to the airport and I find my passport. Questions 19-22 are based on the conversatoin you have just heard. Q19: What does the woman say about her passport? Q20: What do we know about the womanu2019s trip? Q21: Why does the man urge the woman to hurry? Q22: Where does the conversation most probably take place? Conversation 2 W: Oh, Iu2019m fed up with my job. M: Hey, there"s a perfect job for you in the paper today. You might be interested. W: Oh, what is it? What do they want? M: Wait a minute. Uh, here it is. The European Space Agency is recruiting translators. W: The European Space Agency? M: Well, thatu2019s what it says. They need an English translator to work from French or German. W: So they need a degree in French or German, I suppose. Well, Iu2019ve got that. Whatu2019s more, I have plenty of experience. What else are they asking for? M: Just that. A university degree and three or four years of experience as a translator in a professional environment. They also say the person should have a lively and inquiring mind, effective communication skills and the ability to work individually or as a part of the team. W: Well, if I stay at my present job much longer, I wonu2019t have any mind or skills left. By the way, what about salary? I just hope it isnu2019t lower than what I get now. M: Itu2019s said to be negotiable. It depends on the applicantu2019s education and experience. In addition to basic salary, there"s a list of extra benefits. Have a look yourself. W: Hm, travel and social security plus relocation expenses are paid. Hey, this isnu2019t bad. I really want the job. Questions 23-25 are based on the conversatoin you have just heard. Q23: Why is the woman trying to find a new job? Q24: What position is being advertised in the paper? Q25: What are the key factors that determine the salary of the new position? Section B Short Passages Passage 1 When couples get married, they usually plan to have children. Sometimes, however, a couple can not have a child of their own. In this case, they may decide to adopt a child. In fact, adoption is very common today. There are about 60 thousand adoptions each year in the United States alone. Some people prefer to adopt infants, others adopt older children, some couples adopt children from their own countries, others adopt children from foreign countries. In any case, they all adopt children for the same reason ---- they care about children and want to give their adopted child a happy life. Most adopted children know that they are adopted. Psychologists and child-care experts generally think this is a good idea. However, many adopted children or adoptees have very little information about their biological parents. As a matter of fact, it is often very difficult for adoptees to find out about their birth parents because the birth records of most adoptees are usually sealed. The information is secret so no one can see it. Naturally, adopted children have different feelings about their birth parents. Many adoptees want to search for them, but others do not. The decision to search for birth parents is a difficult one to make. Most adoptees have mixed feelings about finding their biological parents. Even though adoptees do not know about their natural parents, they do know that their adopted parents want them, love them and will care for them. Questions 26-29 are based on the passage you have just heard. 26. According to the speaker, why do some couples adopt children? 27. Why is it difficult for adoptees to find out about their birth parents? 28. Why do many adoptees find it hard to make the decision to search for their birth parents? 29. What can we infer from the passage? Passage 2 Katherine Gram graduated from University of Chicago in 1938 and got a job as a news reporter in San Francisco. Katherineu2019s father used to be a successful investment banker. In 1933, he bought a failing newspaper, the Washington Post. Then Katherine returned to Washington and got a job, editing letters in her fatheru2019s newspaper. She married Philip Gram, who took over his father-in-lawu2019s position shortly after and became publisher of the Washington Post. But for many years, her husband suffered from mental illness and he killed himself in 1963. After her husbandu2019s death, Katherine operated the newspaper. In the 1970s, the newspaper became famous around the world and Katherine was also recognized as an important leader in newspaper publishing. She was the first woman to head a major American publishing company, the Washington Post company. In a few years, she successfully expanded the company to include newspaper, magazine, broadcast and cable companies. She died of head injuries after a fall when she was 84. More than 3 thousand people attended her funeral including many government and business leaders. Her friends said she would be remembered as a woman who had an important influence on events in the United States and the world. Katherine once wrote, “The world without newspapers would not be the same kind of world”. After her death, the employees of the Washington Post wrote, “The world without Katherine would not be the same at all.” Questions 30-32 are based on the passage you have just heard. 30. What do we learn from the passage about Katherineu2019s father? 31. What does the speaker tell us about Katherine Gram? 32. What does the comment by employees of the Washington Post suggest? Passage 3 Obtaining good health insurance is a real necessity while you are studying overseas. It protects you from minor and major medical expenses that can wipe out not only your savings but your dreams of an education abroad. There are often two different types of health insurance you can consider buying, international travel insurance and student insurance in the country where you will be going. An international travel insurance policy is usually purchased in your home country before you go abroad. It generally covers a wide variety of medical services and you are often given a list of doctors in the area where you will travel who may even speak your native language. The drawback might be that you may not get your money back immediately, in other words, you may have to pay all you medical expenses and then later submit your receipts to the insurance company. On the other hand, getting student heath insurance in the country where you will study might allow you to only pay a certain percentage of the medical cost at the time of service and thus you donu2019t have to have sufficient cash to pay the entire bill at once. Whatever you decide, obtaining some form of health insurance is something you should consider before you go overseas. You shouldnu2019t wait until you are sick with major medical bills to pay off. Questions 33-35 are based on the passage you have just heard. 33. Why does the speaker advice overseas students to buy health insurance? 34. What is the drawback of students buying international travel insurance? 35. What does the speaker say about students getting health insurance in the country where they will study? Section C Compound Dictation More and more of the worldu2019s population are living in towns or cities. The speed at which cities are growing in the less developed countries is alarming. Between 1920 and 1960, big cities in developed countries increased two and a half times in size, but in other parts of the world the growth was eight times their size. The sheer size of growth is bad enough, but there are now also very disturbing signs of trouble in the comparison of percentages of people living in towns and percentages of people working in industry. During the 19th century, cities grew as a result of the growth of industry. In Europe, the proportion of people living in cities was always smaller than that of the work force working in factories. Now, however, the reverse is almost always true in the newly industrialized world. The percentage of people living in cities is much higher than the percentage working in industry. Without a base of people working in industry, these cities cannot pay for their growth. There is not enough money to build adequate houses for the people that live there, let alone the new arrivals. There has been little opportunity to build water supplies or other facilities. So the figures for the growth of towns and cities represent proportional growth of unemployment and underemployment, a growth in the number of hopeless and despairing parents and starving children.http://bbs.topsage.com/dispbbs.asp?boardid=12&id=166550

听众们恐怕有时也会遇到同样的情况: 例句-1: We certainly jumped the gun when we packed our winter clothes away the first warm day in March. Two days later it turned cold and six inches of snow fell. We had to get the clothes out again. -A great talker is a great liar. -A hedge between keeps friendship green. -A fair death honours the whole life. - A fair face may hide a foul heart. - A faithful friend is hard to find. - A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit.
