1.Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta, India into a wealthy Brahmin family. After a brief stay in England (1878) to attempt to study law, he returned to India, and instead pursued a career as a writer, playwright, songwriter, poet, philosopher and educator. During the first 51 years of his life he achieved some success in the Calcutta area of India where he was born and raised with his many stories, songs and plays. His short stories were published monthly in a friend"s magazine and he even played the lead role in a few of the public performances of his plays. Otherwise, he was little known outside of the Calcutta area, and not known at all outside of India.
This all suddenly changed in 1912. He then returned to England for the first time since his failed attempt at law school as a teenager. Now a man of 51, his was accompanied by his son. On the way over to England he began translating, for the first time, his latest selections of poems, Gitanjali, into English. Almost all of his work prior to that time had been written in his native tongue of Bengali. He decided to do this just to have something to do, with no expectation at all that his first time translation efforts would be any good. He made the handwritten translations in a little notebook he carried around with him and worked on during the long sea voyage from India. Upon arrival, his son left his father"s brief case with this notebook in the London subway. Fortunately, an honest person turned in the briefcase and it was recovered the next day. Tagore"s one friend in England, a famous artist he had met in India, Rothenstein, learned of the translation, and asked to see it. Reluctantly, with much persuasion, Tagore let him have the notebook. The painter could not believe his eyes. The poems were incredible. He called his friend, W.B. Yeats, and finally talked Yeats into looking at the hand scrawled notebook.
The rest, as they say, is history. Yeats was enthralled. He later wrote the introduction to Gitanjali when it was published in September 1912 in a limited edition by the India Society in London. Thereafter, both the poetry and the man were an instant sensation, first in London literary circles, and soon thereafter in the entire world. His spiritual presence was awesome. His words evoked great beauty. Nobody had ever read anything like it. A glimpse of the mysticism and sentimental beauty of Indian culture were revealed to the West for the first time. Less than a year later, in 1913, Rabindranath received the Nobel Prize for literature. He was the first non-westerner to be so honored. Overnight he was famous and began world lecture tours promoting inter-cultural harmony and understanding. In 1915 he was knighted by the British King George V. When not traveling he remained at his family home outside of Calcutta, where he remained very active as a literary, spiritual and social-political force.
In 1919, following the Amritsar massacre of 400 Indian demonstrators by British troops, Sir Tagore renounced his Knighthood. Although a good friend of Gandi, most of the time Tagore stayed out of politics. He was opposed to nationalism and miltiarism as a matter of principle, and instead promoted spiritual values and the creation of a new world culture founded in multi-culturalism, diversity and tolerance. He served as a spiritual and creative beacon to his countrymen, and indeed, the whole world. He used the funds from his writing and lecturing to expand upon the school he had founded in 1901 now known as Visva Bharati . The alternative to the poor system of education imposed by the British, combined the best of traditional Hindu education with Western ideals. Tagore"s multi-cultural educational efforts were an inspiration to many, including his friend, Count Hermann Keyserling of Estonia. Count Keyserling founded his own school in 1920 patterned upon Tagore"s school, and the ancient universities which existed in Northern India under Buddhist rule over 2,000 years ago under the name School of Wisdom. Rabindranath Tagore led the opening program of the School of Wisdom in 1920, and participated in several of its programs thereafter.
Rabindranath Tagore"s creative output tells you a lot about this renaissance man. The variety, quality and quantity are unbelievable. As a writer, Tagore primarily worked in Bengali, but after his success with Gitanjali, he translated many of his other works into English. He wrote over one thousand poems; eight volumes of short stories; almost two dozen plays and play-lets; eight novels; and many books and essays on philosophy, religion, education and social topics. Aside from words and drama, his other great love was music, Bengali style. He composed more than two thousand songs, both the music and lyrics. Two of them became the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. In 1929 he even began painting. Many of his paintings can be found in museums today, especially in India, where he is considered the greatest literary figure of India of all times.
Tagore was not only a creative genius, he was a great man and friend to many. For instance, he was also a good friend from childhood to the great Indian Physicist, Bose. He was educated and quite knowledgeable of Western culture, especially Western poetry and Science. This made him a remarkable person, one of the first of our planet to combine East and West, and ancient and modern knowledge. Tagore had a good grasp of modern - post-Newtonian - physics, and was well able to hold his own in a debate with Einstein in 1930 on the newly emerging principles of quantum mechanics and chaos. His meetings and tape recorded conversations with his contemporaries such Albert Einstein and H.G. Wells, stand as cultural landmarks, and show the brilliance of this great man. Although Tagore is a superb representative of his country - India - the man who wrote its national anthem - his life and works go far beyond his country. He is truly a man of the whole Earth, a product of the best of both traditional Indian, and modern Western cultures. The School of Wisdom is proud to have him as part of its heritage. He exemplifies the ideals important to us of Goodness, Meaningful Work, and World Culture.
2.Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal and which attempted a revival of the ultimate monistic basis of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads. He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there. In his mature years, in addition to his many-sided literary activities, he managed the family estates, a project which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. From time to time he participated in the Indian nationalist movement, though in his own non-sentimental and visionary way; and Gandhi, the political father of modern India, was his devoted friend. Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years he resigned the honour as a protest against British policies in India.
Tagore had early success as a writer in his native Bengal. With his translations of some of his poems he became rapidly known in the West. In fact his fame attained a luminous height, taking him across continents on lecture tours and tours of friendship. For the world he became the voice of India"s spiritual heritage; and for India, especially for Bengal, he became a great living institution.
Although Tagore wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was first of all a poet. Among his fifty and odd volumes of poetry are Manasi (1890) [The Ideal One], Sonar Tari (1894) [The Golden Boat], Gitanjali (1910) [Song Offerings], Gitimalya (1914) [Wreath of Songs], and Balaka (1916) [The Flight of Cranes]. The English renderings of his poetry, which include The Gardener (1913), Fruit-Gathering (1916), and The Fugitive (1921), do not generally correspond to particular volumes in the original Bengali; and in spite of its title, Gitanjali: Song Offerings (1912), the most acclaimed of them, contains poems from other works besides its namesake. Tagore"s major plays are Raja (1910) [The King of the Dark Chamber], Dakghar (1912) [The Post Office], Achalayatan (1912) [The Immovable], Muktadhara (1922) [The Waterfall], and Raktakaravi (1926) [Red Oleanders]. He is the author of several volumes of short stories and a number of novels, among them Gora (1910), Ghare-Baire (1916) [The Home and the World], and Yogayog (1929) [Crosscurrents]. Besides these, he wrote musical dramas, dance dramas, essays of all types, travel diaries, and two autobiographies, one in his middle years and the other shortly before his death in 1941. Tagore also left numerous drawings and paintings, and songs for which he wrote the music himself.

从英国前卫艺术看科学与艺术的关系以前卫、酷炫著称的yBa（英国青年艺术）在90年代获得了令人惊异的成功，一提起yBa，就令人想起达米u2022赫斯特(DamienHirst)和他的动物标本、雷切尔u2022怀特瑞德(RachelWhiteread)对空间的填充和塑造、克里斯u2022奥弗利(ChrisOfili)的黑人圣母和它的大象粪。1997年在伦敦皇家学院和纽约布鲁克林美术馆举办的“感性展”在引起争议的同时，也增加了yBa的知名度，确认了典型的yBa风格:性、死亡和宗教等单纯的主题、玩世不恭的态度、游刃于低俗到崇高之间的大众美学，总之，强调消费社会中感性生活经验的强烈风格。2003年，达米u2022赫斯特在伦敦最时尚的私人画廊“白色立方(WhiteCube)”举办了他8年以来的首次个人展“无常时代的浪漫(RomanceintheAgeofUncertainty)”。进入画廊的第一件作品是浸泡在他著名的玻璃箱中的“浪子”–劈成一半的小牛。赫斯特自称基督教徒，他曾说，所有浸泡在弗尔马林液中的动物都象征着基督受刑。画廊的墙上、空气上地上都充满了血腥味，看这样的展览，让人想起伍迪u2022艾伦(WoodyAllen)那句名言：“你仿佛是在快速地穿越笼罩着死亡阴影的山谷”。主要的房间里有嵌在墙壁中的代表12个使徒和基督的玻璃柜。每个使徒的面前都放着一个盛着弗尔马林液的小玻璃箱，里面浸泡着被剥了皮、切割过的牛头。12个厨柜里装着不同的科学实验用的玻璃器皿、骷髅、十字架、更刺激人神经的是，地面上撒着的鲜血(鹿血)上。房间靠墙放着12个不朽钢玻璃柜，分别代表12个牺牲的门徒和他们所受的各种残酷的极型。每个玻璃柜都在被切割的牛头的目光注视下。一个外表被烤坏厨柜代表被剥皮牺牲的圣徒巴索罗缪(Bartholome)。面向犹大的牛头是黑色的，背向人，牛眼被绑着。一团塑料管从玻璃柜中滑落下来，象征犹大被分割的内脏的,犹大的鲜血一直滴落到地板上。与之相反，基督升天场面被表现得纯洁无暇，没有丝毫血腥。打开着玻璃柜门、闪亮的玻璃架和展翅欲飞的玻璃鸽，象征着圣灵通向天堂的路。画廊正前方的玻璃柜空着，它前面的玻璃箱也空着，只盛着弗尔马林液，象征着信仰的纯洁，抑或信仰的缺失？与使徒相对的是两个大型浮雕画《狂喜》(Rapture)和《挚爱》(Devotion),闪亮的蝴蝶和彩色玻璃象征着天主教堂的光彩。使徒的命运所映射的人间的恐惧和残暴，与教堂中象征上帝荣耀的华丽图像形成巨大的反差。在画廊的楼上，还有更多的牛头和白色斑点画、药片和地理标本、粘着死苍蝇的单色画和插着玻璃碎片的牛头。两个被碎玻璃镜子刺穿的牛头产生出万花筒般闪耀的折射光。它们分别代表被上帝逐出伊甸园的人类始祖亚当和夏娃。这件关于诱惑和惩罚的作品，仿佛象征人类的自省之源。墙上的13幅癌症系列的黑色(TheCancerChronicles)油画，以琥珀似的透明树脂画成.每个画面都由一个人类历史上致命的疾病命名：麻风病、天花、梅毒、癌症、艾滋病等等。它似乎在警告我们：生命不仅短暂，而且每时每刻都有致命的危险。画廊外面是一件同样惊人的作品，这件22英尺高的巨大的雕塑名为《慈善》(Charity)。它的原型是传统的西方基督教堂中以残疾少年为模型的慈善箱。这个上世纪50年代版本的慈善箱，以一个腿部残疾女孩为模特。然而，令人意想不到的是这个惹人爱怜的残疾女孩竟然成了被抢劫的对象，她手持的慈善箱被撬开、只有几块零钱散落在地上，而那个作案用的铁棍就扔在她的脚边。这件波普风格的作品是对世俗的物质时代的极大讽刺：基督教宽容、博爱和助人的精神早已被洗劫一空，教堂的慈善箱变成了教会宣扬道德准则的虚伪标签。面对这样一个展览中，人们很难猜透赫斯特到底在想什么。有人说他极度认真，有人说他是在开玩笑，有人说他为了震惊而制造震惊。这种充满了感性刺激的展览，满足了人们对于恐惧、神秘和时尚等种种好奇心，吸引了众多的观众，同时也是对英国现代艺术大师弗朗西斯u2022培根暴力取向的艺术风格的一种婉转的纪念。英国《卫报》的评论称每件作品都非常"响亮"，都不会“死亡或是消失。”新哥特式(neo-gothic)式风格1992年，赫斯特在萨奇画廊展出了他成名作《在活人心目中物理死亡是不可能存在的》(ThePhysicalImpossibilityofDeathintheMindofSomeoneLiving，1991)。一条足以吞下一个人的14英尺长的老虎鲨鱼浸在无色无味的福尔马林液中，它笔直的流线型身躯强壮有力，一对眼睛依然警觉地睁着，微微张开的嘴巴里露出两排锋利的牙，像它还活着的时候一样凶残可怕。赫斯特的老虎鲨鱼令人想起斯皮尔伯格导演的好莱坞恐怖片中，那个食人不眨眼的大白鲨。它们都象征着死亡、残暴和毁灭性的力量。在《圣经》的“起源篇”中，上帝赋予人类捕猎所有生物的特权。然而，赫斯特的鲨鱼动摇了西方以宗教为基础的最根本的信仰和价值体系，它让人感到：我们—人类不仅仅是猎人，也是猎物，我们不过是自然界中循环不止的食物链中的一环。科学试验vs实验艺术达米u2022赫斯特一向以浸泡在福尔马林液中的动物而著称，他惯用的展示媒介是医学试验用药柜和玻璃箱。和其他许多yBa艺术家作品一样，他所表现的科学试验性与英国视觉艺术发展史密切相关。除了外来的宫廷艺术家荷尔拜因、凡u2022代克、鲁本斯以外，英国对于世界视觉艺术的贡献主要是从牛顿1704年的发明开始的。牛顿的七色光谱系列在当时比任何英国艺术家的影响都要深远。1740年在英国出版的绘画论要求所有英国的风景画家系统地学习牛顿：“光与色的规律，正确地说，产生所有可见世界的各种现象，能够提供给人无穷无尽最令人愉快的享受。"以科学的精神对待艺术促进了英国以特纳和康斯泰勃尔为代表的风景画传统，并且开启了19世纪印象派的先河。19世纪早期英国画坛以风景画为主导,康斯泰勃尔和特纳都是对自然极致精微的观察家。康斯泰勃尔对云的观察和记录就象科学实验一样精细。他在一幅画云的习作后面写道：“汉姆斯泰德。9月2日，1821。"10到11时，晨，晴–银灰色的云笼罩着闷热的地面，西南微风，白天晴，晚上有雨。”康斯泰勃尔是自然主义者，也是诗人，他对于家乡的灌木丛、小河、马、小路、草垛…都充满了情感。康斯泰勃尔最喜欢的一本书是吉尔博特u2022怀特(GilbertWhite)1813年所著的萨尔博尼的自然史。他赞美怀特“以清晰细致的观察视角表达了对自然真诚的爱”，而他把这种爱融汇在自己充满诗意的画面里。特纳是另一位歌颂自然的诗人。他在大自然中发现了野蛮不可思议的力量。他对于崇高和狂野的自然力量的追逐，就如同诗人拜伦对暴风雨的赞美：“让我是你的凶暴和狂喜的分享者，让我是你的一部分。”特纳受到英国历史上最重要的艺术批评家约翰u2022罗斯金的高度评价。罗斯金认为特纳不仅是自然表面的观察家，而且是一个科学家、分析家，一个能够揭示山和海的内在的崇高的力量的哲学家。他的作品超越了所有人，不仅因为它美丽，更因为它真实。牛顿的科学不仅影响到风景画，而且还制造了一种深入观察的文化气氛。18至19世纪科学的观察在英国成为一种全民化的观念。在国立美术馆展出的德比的约瑟夫u2022赖特(JosephWrightofDerby)1769年画的《气泵里的鸟实验》(AnExperimentonaBirdintheAirPump),最好地记录了科学思想对于视觉文化的影响。这幅画记录了一个弗兰肯斯坦(Frankenstein)式的可怕的科学实验场景：一位科学家正在演示气泵的原理，一只鹦鹉被慢慢地闷死在一个被逐步抽干空气的玻璃箱中，在一旁观看的小女孩难过地哭泣起来，不忍心再看下去。这样一个场景真切地展现了在科学和理性之光的阴影下隐藏的残酷。欧洲艺术史上的大师对于人体描绘的精准都离不开通过医学解剖得到的对于人体结构的详尽了解。达u2022芬奇曾经亲自参与过解剖实验，并画了大量人体素描草图，他画的刨开的女性子宫令人过目难忘。达u2022芬奇在当时就曾怀疑过有多少人能有勇气效法他解剖人体，喜欢人体艺术的人也许很多，但是又有多少人愿意陪着那些被剥了皮的、吓人的尸体呆上一晚上呢？象达u2022芬奇一样，18世纪的英国艺术家对自然的好奇心也表现在解剖上。英国绘画史上最著名的动物画家乔治u2022斯塔布斯(GeorgeStubbs)的赛马图就挂在伦敦的国立美术馆中怀特的表现科学实验的作品旁边，他同样显示了对于自然研究的执著和热情。斯塔布斯画马、狮子盒长颈鹿，他的画抓住了18-19世纪英国人对于狩猎和赛马运动的热爱。同时，斯塔布斯对马的知识也是通过解剖得到的。他擅长画马，是因为他对马的内在结构的详尽了解。1766年，斯塔布斯发表了《马的解剖》(AnatomyoftheHorse)。他对于马的身体结构的精确细致地描绘，在自然史和艺术史上有着相同的地位。《马的解剖学》只不过是英国自然观察文化中的一部分。英国人对自然观察的热衷最终诞生了对世界文明影响巨大的达尔文的进化论。达尔文对于各种动物的好奇心，特别是他饲养鸽子的爱好对他发现和阐释适者生存理论起到了至关重要的作用。当康斯泰勃尔画天空的时候；当达尔文发表《物种的起源》的时候，艺术与科学共享的是基于乐观主义的经验：知识使世界变得更加富有，使人类的生活变得更加幸福。而20世纪以来，知识变得可怕了。科技的发达并没有消灭人类在身体上和心理上疾病，经济的繁荣也没有能换来全球的和平。现代性之前的恐怖—死亡、疾病、对世界末日来临的恐惧和对现实的怀疑再次出现在艺术里，但是永恒不变的是艺术史上的科学探索精神，艺术家们继续用科学试验的精神不断对现实生活提出置疑。yBa中的马克u2022奎恩(MarcQuinn)制作的遗传学家约翰u2022萨尔斯顿(JohnSulston)爵士像，把克隆的萨尔斯顿的DNA放在细菌里培养。他用这种方式挑战了进化论和文艺复兴以来关于艺术与科学相结合的简单逻辑。1995年特纳奖的候选人、yBa中的马克u2022沃林格尔(MarkWallinger)在1994年再此造访了斯塔布斯的绘画方式和赛马这个主题。从社会学和视觉文化学角度，沃林格尔赋予了这个主题当代性意义。马，象征着自由和野性的美，它象征着雄性的力量，弗洛伊德的心理学分析曾经把这种动物当作男性的性象征；马，同时也象征着男性的特权和社会等级制。对于马的鉴别从来都与它出生的种性有关，在英文中，race这个词具有赛马和种族的双重含义。骑马狩猎至今仍然是只有英国皇室才能享受的特权。在《魔力的利用》(TheUseofEnchantment)中，心理学家布鲁诺u2022贝特尔汉姆从性语汇角度解释了许多女孩对于骑马的热情：“通过驾驭这种强悍的动物，她能够感觉到她对于男性或是她自己内在性本能的控制。”赛马和马术原本是英国皇室贵族和特权阶层的享乐。在1913年的赛马会上，艾米丽u2022戴维森(EmilyDavidson)为了争取妇女参政的权益不惜以生命的代价拦截国王的坐骑，显示了女性所代表的弱势群体在现代社会中最强烈的反抗。如今，赛马活动不再是贵族的特权，它成了最大众化的赌博方式，但是具有财富、地位和权力的上流社会仍然在这种游戏中享有特权。就象其它赌博业一样，赌马活动仍然被大资本垄断，赤裸裸地呈现着资本主义社会的金钱交易，而这种交易与艺术市场之间的隐喻关系是不言而喻的。沃林格尔自己也买下一匹赛马，起名为“真正的艺术”。他笔下的马看上去很温顺，但是它们强有力的体态象征着潜在的雄性的爆发力和生殖力。以《种族、性别、阶级》(race，sex,class)为题，沃林格尔的画面对艺术中“再现的政治”(politicsofrepresentation)和“政治的再现”(representationofpolitic)提出了有效的批评。迪诺斯和杰克查普曼兄弟的小型雕塑群《天启》(Apocalypse)又称《地狱》(Hell，1999-2000)中的场景好像是自然史和英国当代风景画的结合，其中的铁路模型和火山喷射的场面令人想起特纳的画面，具有英国艺术中所特有的崇高和怪异感。从火山中冒出是一群穿着纳粹军服的悲哀的玩偶。他们在荒谬的环境下被虐或者施虐，有的显示出基因变异特征，被关在一个仿佛是地狱般残忍的环境里受着无尽的折磨和煎熬。在9个以纳粹符号设置的平台上，分布着超过5000个微缩型人物雕塑群。《启示》不仅仅是谴责纳粹大屠杀的另一个版本，查普曼兄弟还引用了许多基督教历史上的经典图象作为暗喻，比如戈雅和卡罗(Callot)的版画，特别是矫饰主义(Mannerism)和巴洛克艺术中所表现的基督教徒为教义牺牲的场面来表现人类灾难的主题。这样一个火山爆发的场景象征着世界的起源和它的结束，反讽了达尔文的适者生存理论的直线型思维方式。特蕾斯u2022艾门(TracyEmin)的床，给人提供的不过是艺术家的物理生存的证明。这张床上有她的睡过痕迹：紧身衣、空水瓶、污点…各种私人的从未被加工过的痕迹。这是艺术家生活经历的展示，她的情感完全隐藏在物质痕迹之后。艺术家所强调的是看得见、摸得着的现实经验，而不是某些模糊的“观念主义”，观众对这样的作品完全可以得出自己的结论。这也是英国艺术自80年代末以来最重要的特色：那就是以经验主义的实验反拨后现代主义空洞的观念和教条。关于经验的重要例证是理查德u2022威尔逊(RichardWilson)在1988年创作的装置20:50。艺术家把整间屋子变成了迷惑人双眼的机油箱。这是对人类感知力的最佳测试，也是巨大的现实经验的证明。这件作品与赫斯特策划的yBa的《冰冻》展同年出现,反映了一种新的趋势：艺术变得可触摸了，更实在了，而艺术中的纯美学和纯观念都显得不再可靠。达米u2022赫斯特的作品一向很明确地展示他对试验性艺术的态度。他坚持解剖的价值是应该从里到外翻出来给人看的，就象他1995年获特纳奖的作品《分割开的母与子》。他的《赞美诗》(Hymn，2000)直接展示了一个6米高的人体解剖模型(图7)。达米u2022赫斯特以展示被弗尔马林液浸泡的动物而著称，他的作品展示了生物存在的短暂性。他的作品《爱的内与外》(InandOutofLove)(1991)展示了蝴蝶从孵化到死亡的短暂一生。1990年的装置《一千年》(AThousandYears)由一个腐烂的牛头、糖溶液、蛆虫和灭虫器构成。在玻璃箱里，你可以看到牛头里的蛆虫变成苍蝇。然而，这些苍蝇从未接触过外面的空气就已经死了。如果说《一千年》是人类的历史或是自然史的缩影，那么它的隐喻是悲观的，一切还没开始就已经结束了。在这样一个悲观的现实情境中，赫斯特把自然史和商业社会的消亡结合起来。在赫斯特最近的展览里，死亡的蝴蝶在画面上飞舞，仿佛艺术家想要抓住自然之美，而不得不杀死他的所爱，如赖特画中正在做实验的科学家；如康斯泰勃尔的《干草车》中在芦苇丛中钓鱼的男孩；又如庚斯博罗(Gainsborough)画中正在追逐蝴蝶的女孩。他们所欣赏的那个自然死了，但是自然在艺术和科学的试验中，在人类对真理的无穷探索中得到了永生。艺术有道德底线吗？西方艺术史上不乏宗教题材的作品，天主教会为了颂扬宗教热情通常有意强调基督和使徒受难的场面，从文艺复兴到巴洛克盛期的艺术作品，都使我们沐浴在天主教所描绘的血腥故事中。而对于一个从未接触过天主教的人来说，天主教的中心图像：那个带着荆棘冠、被钉死在十字架上的满身流血的基督，是一个多么血腥、多么暴力、多么令人震惊的场面啊！欧洲宗教艺术中的血腥场面体现的是“黑色文化”(darkculture)传统。在欧洲艺术史上，黑色文化的源头可以追溯到的希腊悲剧，原始部落的祭祀，它始终贯穿于艺术史中，特别体现于布莱克、博斯、布鲁盖尔、戈雅和超现实主义等荒诞怪异的美学传承上。黑色文化的主题在英国文学名著中也有所表现，如丹尼(Donne)的宗教诗，弥尔顿的《利西达斯》(lycidas)、雪莱的《亥伯龙神》(Hyperion)和泰森(Alfred,LordTennyson)的《备忘录》。它们都通过探讨死亡这个令人恐惧的主题来反衬和引申人类对爱与美的渴望。达米u2022赫斯特的《死亡之不可能性》（1991）就带有英国黑色幽默的特点，玻璃箱里食人鲨。yBa中的查普曼（chapman）兄弟甚至直接引用了戈雅的艺术图像，他们的作品《反对死亡的伟大行为》(GreatDeedsAgainsttheDead，1994)重现了戈雅19世纪的铜版画《战争的灾难》所记录的恐怖场面。他们把其中的83个场景之一—两个挂在树上的士兵残肢断臂放大成真人大小的塑料模特。19世纪西班牙艺术家戈雅的作品不乏暴力的主题，他的一生经历了西班牙历史上最动荡的时代，他在著名的《1808年5月3日的屠杀》中记录了拿破仑侵略军在西班牙大屠杀的恐怖场面。戈雅推崇启蒙运动，支持法国大革命。他在早期的铜版画《狂想曲》中，就曾深刻地揭露和嘲讽了当时西班牙封建统治的腐朽和民族传统中的劣根性。但是当代表当时世界先进文明的法军侵略自己落后的祖国时，戈雅在侵略者的暴行中看到了暴力革命的恐怖,看到了理性主义光环下的黑暗。他在版画《战争的灾难》系列作品中不断地描绘令人发指的恐怖场面，以此来反对绝对主义的价值观；反对把启蒙运动所倡导的进步和发展的观念简单化、概念化；反对用理性和正义的名义发动战争。戈雅晚年的创作的画面更加恐怖，他悬挂在自己家墙上被称为“黑画”的系列作品是西方艺术史上最令人震惊、最恐怖的作品，其中《萨徒尔食子》甚至描绘了食人的场面。恐怖怪异的艺术现象往往是荒谬暴力的现实世界的反映。戈雅创作令人震惊的暴力绘画，并不是为了震惊而震惊，而是为了反抗现实生活中的真正的战争和暴力，揭露人性中可怕的暴力倾向。在当今世界这个强权政治和战争再次出现的时代，戈雅艺术的思想性得到更深刻的发掘，他的“黑画”和约翰u2022列农70年谱写的反战之歌一起，再次受到人们的重视和肯定，而且被当代艺术家不断引用。与yBa的“感性”展同时，伦敦出现一个更令公众震惊的艺术事件：这就是英国艺术家凯利(AnthonyNoelKelly)制造的尸体艺术丑闻。他在伦敦1997年的当代艺术博览会上，把一系列以尸体翻制的模型涂成银色钉在墙上。凯利在艺术创作中所用的尸体来自伦敦皇家外科医学院。他买通了实验室的技术人员，把一个尸体的躯干、切下的头颅、大腿等部分偷运回来做模型。艺术家解释说，他以尸体创作的目的是希望借此对物欲横流的社会中的美丑观念，人体的脆弱、隐私和偷窥的权力提出置疑。制造震惊的前卫艺术和以震惊为目的的行为之间到底有没有区别？前卫艺术有没有它的道德底线呢？我们如何判断它是否属于艺术的范畴之内呢？这些都是难以回答的问题。界定艺术的道德底线是复杂的，但是，当我们在澄清一件作品的道德意义时，我们无法忽略某些最起码的社会意义和道德规范。根据艺术哲学家理查德u2022艾尔德瑞支(RichardEldridge)的解释，艺术至少应该符合两点原则：首先，这种艺术创作必须是有意义的人类行动。因此，它区别于简单的自然反应(比如哆嗦)或是生理行为(比如呼吸)，在某种程度上有必要由理由来阐释和评估。我们可以询问为什么艺术家会这样做。如果答案是“仅仅为了震惊、自我宣传，制造名声或是感性刺激，那么我们得到结论就是：这种可疑的行为不是(真诚的或是完全的)创造艺术，不是艺术所应寻求的最重要的价值，而是在寻求某种其它的回报和影响。”其二，艾尔德瑞支认为，“由于艺术家所呈现的主题集中了思想和情感态度，是带有独特的想象力的材料探索，艺术作品的创作作为一个明确的领域取决于交流和形式因素的综合。艺术家引人耳目的形式安排与他的情感态度和主题意图的考虑是相互作用的。”这与另一位艺术哲学家玛西亚u2022伊顿(MarciaEaton)的看法如出一辙,她认为：“人的经历，包括创作和参与艺术的经历，与道德、美学、宗教、政治等等是不可分割的。美学的经验是独特的，但是这并不能说明它可以和生活的其它部分割开。”这是两条非常简单实用的判断标准。以它为准则，我们再来看待艺术家凯利的作品时，就不难发现它不能够被算作是艺术作品。尽管凯利是艺术家，他希望以艺术的名义打破人类社会生活观念的禁忌，但是他的作品毕竟是社会行为，必然要受到社会的检验，我们不可能只从艺术而不从社会角度看待它，不可能不考虑到社会规范和与之相关的综合因素。凯利的作品触犯了法律和最基本的人伦道德规范，这件作品甚至不够资格被用来做任何艺术评判。英国的媒体在这个问题上也表现得相当成熟。他们把凯利与专偷维多利亚时代墓葬的盗墓贼和哗众取宠的小丑相提并论。凯利因盗窃尸体罪被判处9个月监禁，不仅没有引起艺术界的关注，在大众媒体上也没有获得有价值的讨论。达米u2022赫斯特的作品尽管看上去冷酷而且残忍，容易引起争议，但是它并没有触及法律和人伦规范。赫斯特有很明确的创作意图，他通常借用老式自然历史博物馆中陈列标本的方式展示自己的作品。他所展示的玻璃器皿既是透视作品的窗口也是有意制造的障碍，它一方面有意吸引观众的视线，另一方面又以极少主义的冰冷而严格的几何形体，把内在的主题客观化、理性化；一方面给人以感性的心理刺激，另一方面又有意避免感性化的表现方式。这与康德反对宏大叙事的观念一脉相承。康德曾经说过：对纯粹实践的理性来说，激情无异于癌症，而且通常无药可医。在赫斯特作品的作品中，感性不过是表象，而内在的内容是康德的不断发掘真相的理性主义观念。至于赫斯特和yBa们是不是伟大的艺术家，我们很难下结论，他们的作品虽然能轰动一时，却未必经得起时间的考验。但是我们可以确信的是戈雅对于艺术史的伟大贡献和西方黑色文化所具有的积极性。赫斯特和yBa们继续了西方黑色文化和前卫艺术中关于生命的意义、上帝的存在和死亡的极限等终极问题的探讨，他们通常以更直接的反正统的方式介入生活，刺激你的神经、吸引你的眼球，迫使你去思考你也许从没有想过也从不愿意去想的问题。其实，艺术无论怎样介入生活，相对于现实生活而言，它毕竟只能是一种幻象。英国当代艺术家们用偶像破坏式的作品，用令人震惊的方式，试图揭露的是隐藏在全球化旗帜下的垄断经济、强权政治、僵化的艺术体制和物质社会之中的更深层的暴力。刊载于文艺研究2006年第6期注：1.有关yBa,见邵亦杨，“yba与后前卫”，《美术研究》，2005年，1月。2.DamienHirst,"RomanceintheAgeofUncertainty,"Sept.10-Oct.19,2003,atWhiteCube,48HoxtonSquareN16PBLondon.3.AdrianSearle，TroubleinParadise，theGuardian,TuesdayMarch2,2004。4.Genesis,Chapter9,verse2.5.GeorgeTurnbull,TreatiseonAncientPainting,1740,A.Millar,London.reprint,München,W.Fink[1971],x.6.BrunoBettelheim，TheUsesofEnchantment，PenguinBooks，1978，56.7.RichardEldridge,AnIntroductiontothePhilosophyofArt,Cambridge,A.Millar,2003,223-224.8.ibid.9.MarciaEaton,“MoralityandEthics：ContemporaryAestheticsandEthics，”inMichaelKelly,ed.EncycolpediaofAestheticTheory,OxfordUniversityPress,vol.III,282-285..10.参见康德《历史理性批判文集》中文版。何兆武译，商务印书馆1990年11月第1版。2023-07-11 Context Jonathan Swift, son of the English lawyer Jonathan Swift the elder, was born in Dublin, Ireland, on November 30, 1667. He grew up there in the care of his uncle before attending Trinity College at the age of fourteen, where he stayed for seven years, graduating in 1688. In that year, he became the secretary of Sir William Temple, an English politician and member of the Whig party. In 1694, he took religious orders in the Church of Ireland and then spent a year as a country parson. He then spent further time in the service of Temple before returning to Ireland to become the chaplain of the earl of Berkeley. Meanwhile, he had begun to write satires on the political and religious corruption surrounding him, working on A Tale of a Tub, which supports the position of the Anglican Church against its critics on the left and the right, and The Battle of the Books, which argues for the supremacy of the classics against modern thought and literature. He also wrote a number of political pamphlets in favor of the Whig party. In 1709 he went to London to campaign for the Irish church but was unsuccessful. After some conflicts with the Whig party, mostly because of Swift"s strong allegiance to the church, he became a member of the more conservative Tory party in 1710. Unfortunately for Swift, the Tory government fell out of power in 1714 and Swift, despite his fame for his writings, fell out of favor. Swift, who had been hoping to be assigned a position in the Church of England, instead returned to Dublin, where he became the dean of St. Patrick"s. During his brief time in England, Swift had become friends with writers such as Alexander Pope, and during a meeting of their literary club, the Martinus Scriblerus Club, they decided to write satires of modern learning. The third voyage of Gulliver"s Travels is assembled from the work Swift did during this time. However, the final work was not completed until 1726, and the narrative of the third voyage was actually the last one completed. After his return to Ireland, Swift became a staunch supporter of the Irish against English attempts to weaken their economy and political power, writing pamphlets such as the satirical A Modest Proposal, in which he suggests that the Irish problems of famine and overpopulation could be easily solved by having the babies of poor Irish subjects sold as delicacies to feed the rich. Gulliver"s Travels was a controversial work when it was first published in 1726. In fact, it was not until almost ten years after its first printing that the book appeared with the entire text that Swift had originally intended it to have. Ever since, editors have excised many of the passages, particularly the more caustic ones dealing with bodily functions. Even without those passages, however, Gulliver"s Travels serves as a biting satire, and Swift ensures that it is both humorous and critical, constantly attacking British and European society through its descriptions of imaginary countries. Late in life, Swift seemed to many observers to become even more caustic and bitter than he had been. Three years before his death, he was declared unable to care for himself, and guardians were appointed. Based on these facts and on a comparison between Swift"s fate and that of his character Gulliver, some people have concluded that he gradually became insane and that his insanity was a natural outgrowth of his indignation and outrage against humankind.
