《新概念英语》是英国学者L·G·亚历山大先生专为非本族的中学和成人学习者编写的教材，自1967年由朗文公司出版以来受到世界各国学习者的普遍欢迎。这套教材进入我国已有二十年的历史，其版本之多、影响力之广泛在我国英语教学是罕见的。1997年亚历山大先生又与北京外国语大学何其莘教授合作对教材作了修订，更换了一部分内容略显陈旧的课文，这个版本成为近年最通行的《新概念》版本。 十好几年前我自学《新概念》时使用的是全英文的版本，没有注意到也读不懂亚历山大先生所作的教材说明。那时我还没钻研过道家,对学习英语只有些一知半解的想法;我用《新概念》这一套教材同时学习听、说、读、写、译完全是自发的。摹仿朗读录音是因为喜欢磁带上那滑稽的腔调，不注重语法是因为中学时被语文、英语课的语法灌输倒足了胃口。不久前（2003年5月）我偶尔翻阅《新概念》第二册书前的 “To the Teacher” 和“About this Course”，这时我才发现老先生编写教材的原则本来就是听、说、读、写四位一体。他所介绍的学习方法，也与我国古代圣贤的阐述如出一辙。所谓“天下无二道，圣人无两心”， “Great minds think alike.”，说得一点都不错。 与现在通行的许多教材不同，《新概念》四册书全部出自亚历山大先生一人之手，保证了编写风格的延续性和学术水平的一致性。老先生编写《新概念》真可谓是面面俱到，众美兼求，必止于至善而后已。他的辛勤劳动把这套教材打造成了英语教材的经典之作。关于《新概念》的优点，比如由浅入深，方便自学；四会并重，注重实际运用能力；语言活泼，内容趣味性强：对这些广大英语学习者的评价可以说是众口一辞的。其余如练习适量而实用，插图生动、幽默，朗读标准、流畅，人们也有广泛的共识。 我最佩服的是亚历山大先生在课文的甄择和编排上表现出的深湛功力和慧眼卓识。这些课文文思兼优、雅俗共赏，难度由浅入深，篇幅由短到长，层层递进，有条不紊。一位同事对我说，第二册重要的语法点在每个单元中都次第出现一轮，而下一轮的用法都是对上一轮用法的巩固和深化。《新概念》选文的题材相当广泛，而同一单元的课文长度都大体相当，实在令人拍案叫绝。 《新概念》的成功为英语教材尤其是精读教材的编纂提供了成熟的思路，书中所体现的学习理念也值得我们予以特别的思考和探讨。我如此推崇《新概念》，并不是因为我收了亚历山大先生的“苏联卢布”，老先生名满天下，自然犯不着借我这个无名小辈为之揄扬延誉。我经常想，如果国内有人能板凳坐得十年冷，精雕细琢地编著一套如《新概念》这样的好教材，其意义将远远超过写一万篇为评职称凑数的所谓学术论文。不过如今学术界看重的是“科研”，是那些玩堆砌理论术语的獭鱼祭、教“外行”看得云里雾里的论文，编写教材并算不上是什么重量级的学术成果。如果某位先生有志于此，恐怕得做好准备先过几年门庭冷落、啜菽饮水的含酸日子了。 胡海龙 《新概念》的选材文思兼优 问：你为什么认为《新概念》的选材文思兼优？ 答：当初我开始学《新概念》二、三册的时候，常常感觉课文过于简易，所谓“淡乎且无味”；以后仔细把玩、揣摩，则每每叹服于作者用词的精当和写作技巧的纯熟老到。学这样的美文收获多多，竟有“用之不可既”之妙。《新概念》语言的特点就是往往用看似平淡无奇的常用词准确而传神地表达了丰富的意象。用“大巧若拙”、“雅俗共赏”来形容是再合适不过了。 《新概念》二、三两册的课文，一般认为以幽默故事为主，适应了不同专业、爱好的学习者的阅读口味。实际上这些课文的题材是相当广泛的，还涉及了社会、政治、人物、艺术、考古、科技、自然等方方面面。各篇课文的语言风格大体一致，即便是科技类文章行文也是活泼生动的，没有多少刻板的学究气。这些课文不仅宜于精读，还可以作为学习写作的良好范本。我国古人如曾国藩强调初学作诗文须专学一家，我们长期精读这两册教材便也有专学一家之妙。第四册的课文大多选自英文原著，语言难度加深，题材更加多样，其中包括了罗素、邱吉尔、A·赫胥黎名家的作品。学完第四册，便可以将精读的学习告一段落，直接进入阅读原著、名著的阶段了。 《新概念》的选材文思兼优，雅俗共赏，许多篇章从不同侧面折射出丰富的人文内涵。以下就三、四册的一些课文谈谈我个人的理解。 第三册第29课 “Funny or Not”？的作者指出幽默感与民族特性存在关系，而某些滑稽故事对不同国家的人都能产生吸引力。这一点是文化学研究的重要课题。第50课 “New Year Resolutions”以诙谐的语言讲述了“我”早锻炼和读书两项计划中途夭折的经历，揭示了人性中懒惰、缺乏恒心的弱点，读此文时想必多数人都会报之以会心的一笑。第19课 “A Very Dear Cat”中的老太太为她被绑架的宠物猫偿付了1000英镑的赎金，故事看似轻松，却凸显出西方国家孤寡老人寂寞无依的社会现实。第21课 “Daniel Mendoza”记述了拳击手丹尼尔·门多萨事业由盛转衰、最后贫窭而殁的悲惨经历。以我个人的理解，在西方社会人们热衷于所谓的个人成功，儿童时在天堂，中青年如在战场，老年人如入坟墓，此文的作者对这种砍头去尾的半截人生提出了质疑。门多萨倘能持盈保泰，谦冲善下，具备做人和生活的基本智慧，其晚境或不至如此凄凉。 第四册第20课 “Man, the Unknown”和第46课“The Menance of Urban Explosion”评述了现代城市人口爆炸、生存环境严重恶化的问题。第五课 “No Room in the Ark”呼吁人们关注大猩猩等濒危动物的生存。第14课是罗素的名篇 “How to Grow Old”，罗素指出老年人克服对死亡的恐惧就应该舍小我入大我，摆脱个人狭隘 的小圈子让自己的生活和整个人类的生活融合在一起，这与中国古人达观随缘的人生理念颇有神似之处。第七课 “The Sporting Spirit”的作者认为竞争性的现代体育运动并不利于增进国与国之间的友好关系，有时甚至会激发最野蛮的争强斗胜的天性。老子倡导“不争”，他还说“物壮则老，”“强梁者不得其死”，而西方近代体育强调竞技，奥运会的口号是“更高、更快、更强”，在这样的宗旨下“友谊第一，比赛第二”的理想是难以真正实现的。 这一册第27课 “The Personality of Man”对人类社会的“进步”提出了深入的思考。作者指出人类在知识的积累方面取得了巨大的进展，但在智力和道德方面并没有得到全面的提高。所谓“现代文明”并不是人类全部天赋均衡发展的结果。知识是一种双刃的武器，既可以为人造福，也可以用来作恶，而现在人们正随意地用知识做着这两方面的事。比如炮手利用现代科技将人打成伤残，而外科医生就在附近利用科学成果救治伤员，这种情形是十分冷酷和奇怪的。作者对人类的未来忧心忡忡：如果知识的这种双重作用继续发展，人类将向何处去呢？ 以下摘录 “The Sporting Spirit”一文。 The Sporting Spirit I am always amazed when I hear people saying that sport creates goodwill between the nations, and that if only the common peoples of the world could meet one another at football or cricket, they would have no inclination to meet on the battlefield. But the significant thing is not the behaviour of the players but the attitude of the spectators: and, behind the spectators, of the nations who work themselves into furies over these absurd contests, and seriously believe— at any rate for short periods— that running, jumping and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue.谈到底该不该背新概念问：学习《新概念英语》需不需要背诵课文？ 答：这里引用一个在网上广泛流传的故事： 有个学员现在在Duke大学，他从高一开始背《新概念英语》第三册，背到高三就背完了。高考考进了北大，进北大后，他本来不想再背了。但当他背给同学听的时候，其他同学都露出了羡慕的眼光，于是，为了这种虚荣心，他就坚持背第四册，把第三、四册都背得滚瓜烂熟，他熟到什么地步呢，有人把其中任何一句说出来，把能把上一句和下一句连接下去，而且语音非常标准，因为他是模仿着磁带来背的。后来他去了美国Duke大学，他给***的教师写信，老师不敢回，因为老师对他的英文有畏惧感，他的英文学得太好，只能给他回中文信，并告诉他不是不会写英文，而是想让他温习温习中文，不要忘记祖国的语言。　 这位学生到美国第一个星期写文章，教授把他叫过去说他的文章是剽窃的，因为他的文章写得太好了，教授说："我20年教书没有教出这么漂亮的文章来。"这个学员说，我没有办法证明我能写出这么优秀的文章，但我告诉你，我能背108篇文章，而且背得非常熟练，你想不想听。结果，他没有背完两篇，教授就哭了起来，为什么？因为这个教授想一想自己教了20年了，居然一篇文章也没有背过，被中国学生背掉了，所以很难过……　 我大体相信这个故事的真实性。《新概念英语》是一套极其出色的精读教材，在我身边也有几个在背诵《新概念》的课文以后英语水平包括写作水平突飞猛进的例子。现在很多大中学生都在背诵《新概念》。但具体的效果可能各人不太一样。网上还有一个流传甚广的帖子，叫《忘了那个***炮制的煽情传说吧》——大概***学校宣传过以上那个故事——作者根本不相信会有这样好的成效。不知道这个作者有没有注意过那个故事的细节。 首先,这个北大学生仅仅第三册就背了三年，可见他在课本上下了相当深入的功夫，而且是循序渐进，细水长流的。对课文语言的妙处他肯定是字斟句酌地品味过的。他是慢功出细活。网上还有一个帖子，作者说他花了三个月时间把三四册108篇课文全背下来了，一天背十二个小时。这位同学的刻苦精神值得钦佩，但做法决不可取。这样的学习方法缺乏乐趣，非常枯燥，而且他肯定没有心境细细品味课文语言的韵味和思想文化内涵。背下来只是个形式，关键在能不能学深吃透。 其次，这位北大学生是跟据磁带逐字逐句模仿背诵的，发音非常标准，这说明他是按亚历山大老先生的建议，把《新概念》同时当作听说教材来学的。这样他培养了良好的语感。 再次，这位同学既在北大读书，后来又申请到杜克大学深造，天分定然不低。也许他还很有语言天赋（因为他的发音能练得非常标准，这在中国人中并不多见）。各人语言天赋不同，一个人用这种方法成功了，未必其他所有人也能同样地成功，这是非常自然的事情。 最后，这个故事里只透露了这个北大同学学英语某些方面的情况，另外一些情况我们不得而知。比如他学《新概念》之前英语基础如何？除了模仿磁带背诵以外他是怎么学习的？他有没有好的老师指点？泛读读过那些书？我相信他肯定做了很多的写作练习，也许还有高手给他修改。这些情况我们都不了解。可能因为他说过背《新概念》对他学英语帮助特别大，而背完两册书的课文太不简单，具有轰动效应，所以人们就以为他的成功仅仅是因为把《新概念》“背”会了而已。 背书是肯定有用的，但背书不止是记住就完了，学课文学到精、熟才是关键。古人说熟读唐诗三百首，不会吟诗也会吟，关键在于熟。读是要朗声吟诵，诵出韵味来，体会到诗的意境。古人读书要背诵的，一般的读书人四书五经二十多万字都能背诵，背三百首唐诗当然不在话下。熟读唐诗三百首，肯定都背会了；为什么说“熟读”不说“背会”唐诗三百首呢？在质量不在形式。钱穆先生曾经讲过怎么学诗，他说花一年功夫，把杜甫诗手抄一百首，李白的诗抄一百首，加上王维陶渊明的几十首，就读这个，过几年再把这几个人的诗抄一遍，加进新的，替换旧的，读这四家就够了。学诗好几年就读三百首左右，钱先生肯定不光是指背会。我想学《新概念》要用钱先生说的这种方法细读才行。精读教材在精不在多。古人说“文选烂，秀才半”，熟读了文选就可以做半个秀才，而《文选》通共不过三十多万字。 亚历山大先生现已作古。早年我听过他的讲座，老先生不一般地提倡背课文，我想正是着眼于精熟，而不是“背会”的形式。如果课文已经非常熟练，语感良好，提上句知道下句，对我们来说应该足够了。能一字不露从头背到尾当然更好。 成年人机械记忆力远远不如儿童，我想机械背诵不必强调得太厉害。经常朗诵，有口无心地读。读多了自然就记住了。古人就是这么“背”书的。 （胡海龙）古人背诵并不是光靠机械记忆，“诵”就是朗诵、吟诵，许多人仅仅着意于"背"却忽视了“诵”。诵书可以是有口无心的，朗读多了自然就记住了。好文章不论是国语还是英语，都是有很强的音乐感的，必须靠大声朗读才能体会。我听过上过私塾的老先生吟诵欧阳修的《秋声赋》，感觉他是在忘情地唱歌。大声朗诵还能使我们大大加深对文章的理解。古人说书读百遍其意自见，就机械背诵而言也不用看一百遍吧，这里的读肯定不是指默读。朗诵应该是很有趣味的，否则读一百遍会枯燥死。但唱歌一百遍不会太枯燥，我们朗诵应该能体会唱歌唱戏的意境。曾国藩把诵读古文当作他的人生三乐之一。 理解不是光靠分析得来的。过分地加入理性思维学语言是极不可取的。背诵与华罗庚先生的讲的是两个问题。古代的小孩七八岁以后读诗经尚书，里面古字成堆，他们理解得了吗？以后人生阅历多了，智慧高了学问大了才可能理解。 事实上现在的国语教育是非常失败的。其中一个重要的原因就是没有意识到背诵经典的重要性。这位朋友说我们学汉语就不是靠背大量地背书而能运用的，其实现在的年轻人运用汉语的水平很差！背政治革命史那是机械记忆。真正的背诵是什么感觉，大量背诵经典文章会有什么收效，恐怕很少有人体会。 我工作繁忙，不能就这个问题谈得太多。大家可以参考我发的《朱熹教我们学精读》和《从学古文说到学英语》两篇帖子。对古代的私塾教育能了解一二就更好了。附记：旧版磁带为英音，比新版好得多。上海外语音像和朗文公司合出的，现在还偶尔可以见到。旧版第四册读得差一些，前三册极佳。模仿发音练口语第一册非常合适。语言简单没关系。

Initially, Wolfe was grateful for the extreme editing conditions he worked under with Perkins at Scribner"s.
