本族包括自然铜、自然银、自然金等矿物。金的单质状态是它在自然界最主要的存在形式。此外，仅少量的金以碲化物出现。银或铜呈单质形式存在较少，它们往往形成硫化物和其他化合物。自然铜Copper—Cu晶体参数　等轴晶系；对称型Fm3m。空间群Fm3m;a0=0.3908nm;Z=4。成分与结构　自然铜常含有少量的Ag、Bi、Hg、As、Sb。铜的原子半径较小，只能在高温时与金形成固溶体。金与铜可形成金属互化物，如铜金矿Cu Au（cuproaurite）。自然铜的结构为铜型。形态　通常呈不规则树枝状（图7-2）、片状或致密块状。图7-2 自然铜形态A—自然铜呈树枝状；B—自然铜（美国哈佛大学矿物博物馆）（据Hurlbut等，1977）物理性质　新鲜面呈铜红色，条痕铜红色，金属光泽。通常表面氧化呈黑色并且光泽暗淡。具强延展性，断口锯齿状，硬度2.5～3；密度8.95g/cm3。鉴定特征　以其铜红色、锯齿状断口、高密度和强延展性为特征。成因与产状　自然铜形成于多种地质过程中的还原条件下。热液成因的自然铜，往往呈散染状与沸石、方解石等共生。充填于玄武岩气孔中，与沸石、葡萄石等矿物共生的自然铜，其成因与火山热液作用有关。沉积成因的自然铜见于富含有机质的沉积岩层中。自然铜最为常见的是形成于含铜硫化物矿床的氧化带，系含铜硫化物矿物氧化后所形成的硫酸铜溶液被其他硫酸盐或硫化物还原而成，即CuSO4+2FeSO4→Cu+Fe2（SO4）3。主要用途　作为铜矿石，自然铜居非常次要的地位，当今作为提炼铜的铜矿石以铜的硫化物为主。铜的最大用途主要用于电线。它也广泛用于制造合金，如黄铜（铜锌合金）、青铜（铜锡锌合金），以及德国银（铜镍锌合金）。铜对于现代文明的贡献仅次于铁。自然金Gold—Au晶体参数　等轴晶系；对称型m3m。空间群Fm3m;a0=0.4070nm;Z=4。成分与结构　Au与Ag组成完全固溶体系列，大多数金含有Ag。当Ag达到或超过20%时，该合金称为银金矿（electrum）。自然金中可含有少量的Cu、Fe，以及微量的Bi、Pb、Sn、Zn、Pt。金的纯度或成色以1000表示，由于大多数金都含有10%的其他金属，一般最好的成色为900。金的结构为铜型。形态　呈分散粒状或不规则树枝状集合体（图7-3）。偶见较大的块体，俗称狗头金。图7-3 自然金形态A—扭曲的自然金八面体晶体；B—金呈树枝状；C—自然金（标本来自于俄罗斯叶卡特琳堡州）（据Klein等，2007）物理性质　金黄色，随其成分中含Ag量的增高而颜色逐渐变为淡黄；条痕色与颜色相同，根据其条痕色的深浅可确定Ag的含量；金属光泽。硬度2.5～3；具强延展性，密度19.3g/cm3。鉴定特征　以金黄色、条痕色、低硬度、密度大、强延展性及火烧不变色为特征。成因与产状　自然金在地壳中的丰度为0.004×10-6，为稀有元素。主要产于高、中温热液成因的含金石英脉中，或产于蚀变岩中以及火山岩系与火山热液作用有关的中、低温热液矿床中。关于金在热液中的搬运形式，一般认为是呈Na3Au S3易溶络合物形式搬运。如热液成因的自然金和黄铁矿的共生是以下反应的结果：2Na3Au S3+3FeCO3→2Au+3FeS2+3Na2CO3。外生条件下，自然金常富集形成重要的砂金矿床。我国许多省区均有自然金产地，其中原生矿床以山东等地著称，而砂金矿床以金沙江、黑龙江和湖南沅水流域分布最多。主要用途　自然金几乎是金的唯一来源。世界市场以黄金为货币计算标准，所以国库中黄金储备的多少具有十分重要的意义。在现代技术上利用极细的纯金丝制造电子元件，利用镀金薄膜制造高温隔热反射屏蔽和红外线加热器反射层。此外，金还可制备各种合金，用于制造尖端技术装置的部件。狗头金狗头金的矿物组成通常为自然金、石英和其他矿物。外形呈不规则的块状。有人以其形似狗头，称之为狗头金（nugget）。有人以其形似马蹄，称之为马蹄金；但多数通称这种天然块状自然金为狗头金。狗头金在世界上分布稀少，不易多得，但由于黄金价值昂贵，被人们视为宝中之宝。找到狗头金常常带有一定偶然性，一旦发现狗头金，常常引起社会轰动。根据统计资料，迄今世界上已发现大于10kg的狗头金约有8000～10000块。数量最多首推澳大利亚，占狗头金总量的80%。其中最大的一块重达235.87kg的狗头金也产于澳大利亚。在人类采金史中，我国也是狗头金发现较多的国家之一。湖南省资水中、下游流域是我国历代盛产狗头金地区。此外四川省白玉县，陕西省南郑县、安康市，黑龙江呼玛县，吉林省桦甸市，青海省大通县、曲麻莱县，山东省招远市，河北省遵化市等，都相继发现狗头金，总计约有千余块。
