(孔子说)：“我15岁时,立志于学习,30岁能自立于世,40岁时遇事就不迷惑,50岁时懂得了什么是天命,60岁能听得进不同的意见,到了70岁才能达到随心所欲,想做什么便做什么,也不会超出规矩.”孔子说:“我十五岁时开始立志学习；三十岁时能自立于世；四十岁时遇事就不迷惑；五十岁时懂得了什么是天命；六十岁时能听得进不同的意见；到了七十岁时才能达到随心所欲，想怎么做便怎么做，也不会超出规矩。”宏观视角上孔子思想生成轨迹透析 ————"吾十有五而志于学……七十而从心所欲,不逾矩"解读 江苏省仪征中学 姚国平 摘 要:本文以解读"吾十有五而志于学,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七 十而从心所欲,不逾矩"为背景,试图从宏观视角上对孔子一生以及表象层面思想的动态生成轨迹作一简要透析,以使普通读者从一般意义上去了解孔子及其思想. 关键词:十五有志于学,三十而立,四十不惑,五十知天命,六十耳顺,七十从心所欲不逾矩,表象 层面思想,动态生成轨迹,宏观透析 "吾十有五而志于学……不逾矩"这几句古训,早已作为一种文化积淀,深深地渗透到东方儒家文化圈人们的文化心理结构之中,形成了一种文化遗传基因. 这些古训是孔子晚年总结自己思想历程所说的,即"吾十有五而志于学,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七十而从心所欲,不逾矩."[1]这里就孔子一生经历,从宏观视角上对这些古训所折射出的孔子表象层面思想的动态生成轨迹作一简要透析,以飨读者. 孔子父亲叔梁纥是春秋时鲁国的低等贵族,任鄹邑宰(鄹邑,今山东曲阜东南,宰,鲁国地方官),故孔子被人称为"鄹人之子"[2].孔子母亲姓颜,名征在,传说是叔梁纥的第三夫人.据史载:"纥与颜氏女野合而生孔子"[3],所谓"野",是指没进行正常的礼聘,"野合"即未经媒聘而自由同居.在礼教未严的古代,不经媒聘而自由同居是可以的,但这种自由结合,也难免带来男女关系的随意性.在妇女地位低下的社会条件下,这种随意性又会给她们造成不幸.颜征在生下孔子不久,便同孔家关系破裂,带着尚在襁褓的孔子离开孔家居娘家曲阜.这样,弃妇,孤儿给孔子的幼年投下了阴影.颜征在曲阜虽然能得到同族亲友的关照,但无高门显贵可附,主要靠自己谋生糊口.因此孔子年少时虽然有机会参加当地在农闲举办的平民学校学习,但多数时间不得不帮母亲种稼,种菜,放牧等.孔子后来回忆自己少年生活时,曾感慨地说:"吾少也贱,故多能鄙事"[4],所谓鄙事,即老百姓从事的各种劳动.生活的担子过早地落在这位贫苦少年身上.更为不幸地是在他十五岁时,颜征在患了重病,两年后便离开了人世.这样,尚未成年的孔子在15岁时便被迫结束了自己的学校学习,并且在没有任何亲人照料的情况下安排自己的生活和自学. 如前所述,孔子青少年时期的学习分两个阶段:15岁以前上平民学校,15岁以后转入自学.对于孔子来说,平民学校的启蒙教育是很重要的,在那里,少儿时期的孔子不仅获得一般文化知识和军事训练知识,而且受到传统礼仪活动的熏陶,为他以后自学打下了基础.随着家境日蹙,在无法继续到学校进行深造的情况下,孔子决心自学.后来他回忆说:"吾十有五而志于学",就是指他从15岁开始进入自觉的自学阶段.其自学的主要内容是《诗》, 《书》,礼,乐等. 经过十多年的努力自学,孔子学业达到了相当高的程度.在当时学术下移的时代,孔子顺应时代朝流,开始兴办私学,且因其别具一格的办学方针——"有教无类";新颖而生动的教育教学方法——"举一反三","知之为知之,不知为不知","不悱不发,不愤不启","学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆"等.这些使孔子创办的学校远胜于同时期和以往尚处于摸索或试办阶段的一切私家之学,成为春秋开创私人办学新局面的杰出代表.当时孔子才30岁,孔子称自己"三十而立",就是指他在30岁前后 因办私学成功而立足于世. 孔子办私学获得成功以后,便对三代(夏,殷,周)的礼乐进行了广泛而深入的了解,不仅随时问人请教,而且先后到宋国,洛邑,杞国等地,对殷礼,周礼和夏礼作实际考察.其考察和研究所得使他发现两点:一是认为三代礼制表现为一种渐进的历史过程,即"殷因于夏礼,所损益,可知也;周因于殷礼,所损益,可知也.其或继周者,虽百世,可知也."[5]二是感到夏礼和殷礼由于时代久远,文献不足征而不知其详,唯有在夏礼和殷礼基础上发展起来的周礼丰富多彩.他以十分惊叹的语气称赞说:"周监于二代,郁郁乎文哉!吾从周"[6].孔子称道的周代"郁郁之文",不仅指周代的礼乐的审美特征,而且包括它崇尚人伦道德的理性精神,以至包括具有内容美和形式美的一切物质文明和精神文明成果.它们同夏商二代的古典文化相比,属于现代文化;同落后地区相比,则是先进文化.孔子认为这种超越以往时代和其它民族的周文化,应该优先受到尊崇和发扬.所谓"从周",便是他这种愿望的简要表述.在不同民族文化和三代文化并存的春秋时期,确立周文化的主导地位,对于当时正在进行的民族融合与文化交流,无疑具有极大意义.孔子37岁自齐返鲁,又经过一段时间的研究,大约在40岁前后,便树立"从周 "之愿而终生不渝.他称自己"四十而不惑",所不惑者,当然包括"从周"的信仰,另外也有掌握了各种知识,任何事情都不致于迷惑的意思. 在孔子以前,人们对天命的认识经历了由天神崇拜转向理性探讨的渐进过程."天命"一语,源于殷人的"帝令","帝令"最早见于殷墟卜辞.帝,以后又作"上帝"," 天帝","天".令即命,古无"命"字,以"令"作"命".在认识自然规律能力低下而致迷信深重的古代,人们相信至上神"天帝"的存在,它是世界的主宰和王权的保护者,天命即其意志的显现,事无巨细都要占卜吉凶,以求天意神示.殷末纣王面临全国众叛亲离的形势,说:"呜呼!我生不有命在天 "[7],大祸临头还不相信自己受天之命的王权会出现危机. 讲究实际的周人,从殷灭亡的教训中受到启示,提出"天命靡常"[8],"皇天无亲,唯德是辅"[9],认为天的保护作用不是绝对的.这种思想倾向在西周末年的政治动荡中,促使人们对天的信仰发生了动摇,疑天,怨天的情绪普遍增长,所谓"昊天不佣","昊天不惠","昊天不平"[10],"疾威上帝,其命多辟"[11]一类的话,在《诗经》中随处可见. 时至春秋,天命神鬼观念在两个方面受到冲击:一是由于科技的进步,使人们对天象和其它自然现象的观察日益丰富,被神秘化的自然越来越多地被人们认识.二是由于人们在生产领域和社会变革中的作用日益增强,使他们逐渐认识到自己的力量,从而影响了天地神鬼在他们心目中的地位.这两种情况的结合,促进了春秋无神论的滋长,出现很多关于神人关系和吉凶祸福问题的新观点,诸如"夫民,神之主也,是以圣王先成民而后致力于神"[12],"阴阳之事,非吉凶所生也.吉凶由人"[13],"天地不仁, 以万物为刍狗"[14].所有这些,实际上否认了天作为人格神的地位,也影响了孔子天命观的形成. 孔子倡导仁学,强调人为,通晓天文历法,因而不自觉地形成了带有时代烙印的天命观.如"天何言哉四时行焉,百物生焉"[15],其大意为"天不发号施令,而四季照常运行,百物照常生长."这同老子的"天地不仁,以万物为刍狗"的意思完全一致,天具有自然的属性.出自这种自然之天的"天命",当然不能简单地理解为天帝意志的显现,而不能不具有自然法规或事物规律性的涵义.故孔子称自己"五十而知天命 ".知天命,即认识自然发展变化的规律,是他这个时期的重要思想收获. 孔子50岁以后,开始出任鲁国宫廷之职,从中都宰平步青云至司寇行摄相事, 即协助或代理季氏处理国政.由于孔子的政治主张终不能为鲁侯所用,孔子见在鲁国从政无望,便携部分学生出国游历诸侯,但其政治主张仍就不能为中原诸国所用.经过艰难曲折的跋涉,于公元前492年5月,孔子一行抵达陈国.陈国是南方妫姓小国,陈侯对这位中原名人和他的一群高足的到来十分高兴,待以上宾,把最好的馆舍分配给他们住.孔子也因此获得生活上暂时平静和安宁. 这时,孔子已经60岁了.经过长期求索和遭遇坎坷而转入生活平静之后,使孔子有时间对自己的求索和体会进行总结.其心得之一就是对中庸的发现和认识,"中",即矛盾相互联结所表现出来的度,"庸"通"用","中庸"即以中为用.在孔子看来,把握这种度,以促进事物之间的协调发展,应成为修身治国的基本原则.60岁时,对中庸的发现和认识,以及以后对中庸的理论发挥,正如他后来回忆自己思想历程时所说:"六十而耳顺",即经过几十年的探索,追求,到六十岁,一听别人言语,便可以分辨真假,判明是非了. 60岁以后的孔子,一方面继续传教弟子,整理古代典籍,并对中庸加以理论上的发挥;另一方面继续努力使自己的政治主张能得到应用,以实现济世安民的宏愿.又经过近十年的颠沛流离,最后回到故土鲁国.归鲁后,门弟子增多,私学有进一步发展,除教学外,他把主要精力用于文化典籍的整理上.但事情很不尽如人愿,为社会发展奋斗了一生的孔子,晚年的家庭生活是非常凄苦的.继夫人亓官氏去世之后,他唯一的儿子孔鲤也先他而去,不久,他最亲密的两位学生颜回和子路也不幸亡故.这样,长期的劳累夺去了他的健康,体内的隐疾由于孔鲤,颜回,子路相继离世而急剧恶化. 到公元前479年夏历正月,虽然已进入孟春时节,但外面仍寒意瑟瑟.枯萎的小草带着残冬的梦,蜷缩在路旁.唯有庭前三株桧树,以它素有的苍翠在寒风中挺立.他扶杖望着这几株年轻时亲手栽种而现已硕大成荫的桧树,不禁惋叹已流逝的岁月.他想起前些时候对学生们所说的那席话:"吾十有五而志于学,三十而立, 四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七十而从心所欲,不逾矩."他深知这席话所折射出来的曲折经历和艰辛代价.而经过数十年探索和追求,在七十岁以后做到"从心所欲,不逾矩"(不违反事物发展规律,从而能正确指导行动,避免重大错误.)这不是很宝贵的吗!他似乎此时才体会到七十岁对人的真正意义和价值.但是,有谁能理解我呢 "理解我的,大概只有天吧!"他慨叹着. 就这样,孔子从此便卧床不起,终于在是年夏历2月11日,溘然长逝,享年73岁.
