英语自学者不可能在每次遇到英语问题时都去请教英语老师或其他懂英语的人,而词典之类的工具书却可以与人朝夕相伴.学会使用英语词典,人们就可以独立工作,独立解决英语学习中遇到的各种难题,因此,英语词典对于学习英语的人来说极其重要.书店里英文词典琳琅满目,有普通的英语词典（如英英词典,英汉词典,汉英词典）,专门的语言词典（如用法词典,习语词典,发音词典,同义词词典）,有各种知识性词典（如百科全书,人名录,传记）,还有词汇量、信息量大小不同的词典（如Webster"s New World Dictionary,Longman Contemporary English—Chinese Dictionary, Oxford Advanced Learner`s Dictionary of Current English）等等.每类词典都各有特点,甚至每部词典也各具特色.因此,选择适合自己使用的词典非常重要. 选择好适合的词典后,英语自学者还应花时间学会使用英语词典.掌握这一技巧将会大大提高你的英语自学能力,尤其是提高扩大词汇量的能力和阅读能力,并会使你受益终生.根据自己的需要和程度选择词典 在Webster"s New World Dictionary（《韦氏新世界词典》）中对“词典”（dictionary）这个词是这样定义的： “a reference book containing words usu.alphabetically arranged along with information about their forms, functions, etymologies, meanings, syntactical and idiomatic usage.” 这个定义虽然很短,但却简要地说明了词典的功能：一个单词的形式、功能、词源、词义、句法和习语用法等等都给了明确的说明.如果我们再读“词典”一词的其他意思,我们又会得到三种定义.他们实际上是给不同词典下的定义.实际上,词典的功能远不止这几种.例如在Webster"s New World Dictionary 中查一查give 这个词,仔细阅读这一词条后,我们就会发现这本词典向读者提供了有关 give 一词的如下信息：词型或拼法；发音；词类；动词的各种变换形式；词源；词义；同义词；反义词. 由此可见,不同的词典为同一个词所提供的信息的多少是不一样的.这多半是由词典的大小及其功能决定的.比如,Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English （《朗文当代英语词典》）在 give 这一词条中就没有关于该词词源、同义词和反义词方面的内容,因为它是一部中型词典. 使用任何一本词典,首先要熟悉那本词典的功能和编辑体例.词典有大小之分,类别之分.因此,各类词典的功能也就不尽相同.一本袖珍词典,小巧玲珑,便于阅读和携带,但收词量较小,用途极为有限.一本普通的中型词典,不但收词量大,而且功能也多,每一词条的各种释义也清楚.一部大型词典几乎是无所不包,但携带起来很不方便.此外,还有各类专业词典.总之,假如使用词典的人不了解这一基本常识,使用一部词典去查它不具备的信息,就不会达到目的.词典的种类很多,其编辑体例也有很大的差异.比如,英语注音符号不同：有的采用通用的国际音标,有的采用韦氏音标.再如,单词重音的标法也不一样.有的重音符号打在重读音节的左上方,有的则打在重音节的右上方.有的词典把多音节词用“ . ”分开.如,ma .na .ge . ment （管理）.有的词典就没有这样做.有的词典把词源放在词条的前部,有的则放在后部,有的则根本不提供的词源方面的知识.有些词典把习语、派生词、复合词等收入与其有关的词条内,如pick up 这一动词短语收入pick这个词条内；call off则收入在call 这个词条内；有的词典则将动词短语单独立词.以上的例子都说明了词典的编排各有特点,查阅者须了解其特点才能方便使用.有些人使用词典对这些不管不问,抄起一部词典就查,结果常常会是浪费了许多时间和精力,反而查不到要查的词.词典的功能和体例掌握起来并不难,一般在其前言和体例说明中都有详尽的解释.因此,英语自学者在使用词典时不妨花点时间去读读这方面的说明,以便尽管快掌握一部词典的特点和使用方法.学会领会词义的能力 对于英语学习来说,词条提供的每一信息内容都是有用的,但是最有用处的还是词义.英语单词中一词一义的情况是存在的.遇到这类生词,在词典中查找词义就比较容易.只要词典收录了这个词条,我们就能如愿以偿.但是英语中一词多义的现象相当普遍.我们学习英语单词时通常只学到了单词的一个或两个词义.当某个已知的单词在阅读中出现时,我们按照已知的意思去理解句子的时候读不通,这时我们应该想到,该词在新的语境有了新的词义.下面举一具体例子来说明这种情况. —Six people had been injured because a madman, too drunk to walk, had gotten behind the wheel. 在上面这句话中,wheel这个词一般读者可能都认识,意为“车轮”.当我们读到这个词的时候,不要想当然地认为它是一个学过的熟词,按照已知的词义去理解就行了.事实上,如果按照已知的词义“车轮”来理解这句话,显然读不通.在这种情况下,我们应该想到,wheel可能有其他含义.查一下Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English就会明白了.Wheel一词在这句话中所具有的意思是该词条第2义所给的解释：the steering WHEEL of a car or guiding wheel of a ship.汉语的意思为“驾驶盘,转向轮”.全句翻译成语为：这个喝得东倒西歪的家伙,竟开起了汽车（坐在方向盘后）,致使六人在车祸中受伤.遇到类似的情况,在词典的帮助下,根据上下文提供的线索,便不难确定熟悉词汇的新含义.一词多义在英语中是一种很普遍的语义现象.遇到这种情况求助词典时,究竟一个具体词条中哪一个释义符合文章作者用词的本意,就要靠读者自己根据上下文来确定了. 查词典来确定词义时,也不一定一查就准.在使用词典的过程中,尤其是初学者来说,会遇到种种令人烦恼的事.比如,有的词典释义比较简单,查了半天也找不到贴切的释义.有的词典释义较详尽,使用词典的人读来读去还是弄不清某些释义的细微差异.有时英文释义中有生词出现,就更增加了查词典的难度. 一般来说,一词多义有两种情况.一是生词的一词多义,一是熟词的一词多义.如果阅读时遇到的是生词的一词多义就应该先看词条的第一义.因为一般来说,词条的第一义也是该词条最基本的含义.如果发现词条的第一义不符合文章中作者所要表达的意思,就要再看下面的各种释义.不少词典多在一个具体释义之前说明该词义的使用场合或范围.比如 progression一词,对读者来说,它可能是生词,也可能是熟词.如果去查《新英汉词典》时会发现在progression这个词条下面给了五个释义.词条的第一义是：前进,进行.这是该词最基本的意思.词条的第四义是：[数]级数.这样,该释义就具体化了,不易产生差错.该词条的第五义又说：[音]（音乐或和弦的）相继进行；（各声部的）和谐进行.也具体地限定了该释义的范围.如果依照词典的释义说明,再考虑到该词在文章中所处的位置及所起的作用,就比较容易确定词义了.当遇到自己熟悉的单词,但根据已知的词义在文章中读不通时,也需要查词典.先要在词条中找到自己熟悉的释义,加以排除,再在其他释义中查找就比较容易了.这时,读者仍需把文章中提供的线索与词典的释义联系起来考虑.请看下面一句话： Throughout above and following dialogue, a portable radio carried by one of the children carries the following announcement: … ——by Rod Serling 在这句话中carry一词使用了两次.不用查词典,一般人都知道此句中第一个carry 的含义就是其最基本的意思——携带.但句中第二个carry的含义显然不是“携带”的意思,因为用此义解释不通.查 Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English就可以看到 carry一词词条的第一释义：to bear (someone or something)in one"s arms,on one"s back,etc.,while moving.这是该词最基本的词义.其第13义有如下解释：to print or broadcast.而且紧接着还提供了一个例句：All the newspapers carried articles about the government"s plans.于是就可断定第二个carry的意思是“刊登 、广播”的意思.因此上面那句话的意思为：上述和以下对白进行的过程中,一个小孩拿着手提式收音机一直在广播下述通知：…..carry在这句话中出现两次,但却有两种不同的含义.要把握历史和地理的概念 由于语言是在不断发展变化的,作为词汇记录的词典内容也必然随之变化；而且英国和美国之间存在着差异,英美词典的内容就不尽相同.因此,了解一部词典的出版时间和地点也非常重要.例如,cosmonaut(宙航员)和spacewalk（空间行走）都是在本世纪50年代后期和60年代出现的.尽管郑易里主编的《英华大词典》收词很多,但人们却从中查不到这些词.因为《英华大词典》编于是1949年,当时这些词还未出现,但我们可以在《新英汉词典》中找到. 笔者在此推荐Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English其优点如下： 首先,该词典是当代著名语言学家通力合作的研究成果. 其二,对于所有的实词都作了系统的、科学的句法词法描述. 其三,把前缀、后缀、组合形式列为词条. 其四,全部定义和例句仅用两千个常用词写出. 最后,该词典专设usage一项,对常用同义词、常用词的搭配及惯用法、习语作了简要说明. 在阅读中遇到新词或一词多义的词,如果学会了使用词典,很快就可以准确找到它的释义.这样日积月累,不但词汇量丰富起来,而且阅读能力也会大大提高.使用一部词典,尤其是一部英英词典,有一个熟悉的过程.只有英语学习者找到合适的词典并学会如何使用它,相信一定会给你的英语学习,特别是提高你的英语阅读能力、扩大词汇量带来很大的帮助,为你在自学英语的道路上打下坚实的基础.希望能帮助到你，望采纳！
