　　他们一起坐在同一个座位上，一人划一把桨。然后，加油工划起双桨；随后，记者划起双桨；接着，是加油工；再接着，又是记者。他们划着，划着。这事最棘手的，是轮到靠在船尾的那个人划桨的时候。说实在话，从母鸡屁股底下偷鸡蛋，也比在那小船上换个座位来得容易。首先，船尾的人将手顺着座板往前滑动，小心冀翼地挪动身子，犹如他是法国的细瓷一样。然后，坐在划桨位子上的人将手顺着另—面座板划动。一举一动都得提心吊胆。当这两人战战兢兢地擦身而过时，全船的人都警惕地注视着那滚滚而来的波涛，船长大声减道：“注意！当心些！” 　　不时涌现一簇簇褐色的海藻，好像海岛，好像小块小块的土地。显然，海藻不在向任何方向移动。实际上，它们是静止的。它们告诉船上的人，他们的小船正在朝陆地缓缓前进。 船长在小船被一个巨浪颠起之后，在船头谨慎地抬起身子，说他看到了蚊子湾的灯塔。厨子马上说他也看到了。那当儿，记者正划着桨，为了某种原因，他也想看看灯塔，可他背对着远岸，而海浪又气势汹汹，他一时没有机会转过头去。不过，最后涌来一阵浪头，比别的浪头较为缓和，等他颠到浪顶，他赶忙向西方的地平线瞥了一眼。 　　“看见了吗？”船长问。 　　“没有，”记者慢吞吞地说，“什么也没看见。” 　　“再看看，”船长说。他用手指着。“就在那个方向。” 　　到了另—个浪尖上，记者照船长的吩咐又看了看，这次他的目光在摇摇晃晃的地平线边缘上，偶尔发现了一个小小的、静止的东西。它恰似一个针尖。要找到一个如此微小的灯塔，那得有急切的目光才行。 　　“船长，你看我们能划到那儿吗？” 　　“如果这风持续刮下去，船又不翻掉，我们也只能划到那儿，”船长说。 　　小船被一个个掀天的巨浪举起，被凶恶的浪峰打得哗哗作响。它就这么行进着。这种行进，在周围没有海藻的时候，船上的人是难以觉察的。那船仿佛只是一件小玩艺儿，颠簸摇晃，奇迹般地没有翻个儿，任凭大洋恣意摆布。偶尔有一大片海水，好似白色的火焰，涌进船里。 　　“舀水，厨子，”船长沉着地说。 　　“是，船长。”厨子兴致勃勃地答道。三　　在这大海上建立起来的微妙的手足之情，很难用笔墨加以形容。谁也没说情况如此。谁也没提起过这种手足之情。然而，船中确实存在着这种友情，因而使每个人感到温暖。他们是船长、加油工、厨子和记者，四个人结成了朋友——超乎寻常地、更为奇妙地牢牢联结在一起的朋友。受伤的船长靠在船头的水罐子上，说起话来总是低声细语，平心静气的，别看他船上的三个人是杂凑在一起的，他决不可能指挥比他们更心甘情愿、更欣然从命的船员了。他们不只是认识到如何最有利于共同的安全。这其中的确有一种属于个人的、发自肺腑的特质。除了对船长的忠诚，还存在着这般的友谊。就拿记者来说，他—向所受的教育是用冷服看人，此刻甚至认为这种友谊是他平生最美好的经历。然而，谁也没有说过情况如此。谁也没有提起过这种友情。 　　“但愿有个帆就好了，”船长说。“不妨把我的大衣系在浆头上试试，让你们两个有机会歇一歇。”于是，厨子和记者撑起桅杆，摊开入衣，加油工掌舵；小船装好了帆，加快了前进速度。有时，加油工不得不猛地一划，避免一阵海浪冲进船中，但是除此之外，小船一帆风顺。 其间，灯塔在慢慢变大。现在几乎显出颜色了，看上去犹如天边的一个小小的灰影。划船的人常常情不自禁地转过头，真想瞧一眼那小小的灰影。 　　最后，从每一个浪峰上，那颠簸着的小船上的几个人终于看得见陆地了。即使灯塔变成天边的一个竖影的时候，那陆地也仅仅像是海上的—条长长的黑影。当然，这影子比纸还薄。“我们一定是在　　新斯麦拿对面一带了。”厨子说。原来，他以前常坐帆船沿这一带海岸航行。“对啦，船长，我想他们大约在一年前就把那个救护站取消了。” 　　“是吗？”船长问。 　　风渐渐停息了。厨子和记者现在不必做苦役般地高举着浆。但是，海浪照旧向小船猛扑过来。小船停滞不前了，拼命地同海浪搏斗着。加油工或是记者又接过桨。 　　本来，船只失事也算不了什么。只要人们受过专门训练，并在身强力壮的时候遭受船难，那就会有较少的人淹死在海上。这船上的四个人，在登上小船之前，已有两天两夜没怎么合眼了，而当初在沉船的甲板上到处乱爬的过程中，因为心情紧张，也忘了饱餐一顿。 　　由于这些原因，以及其他种种原因，加油工和记者此刻都不喜欢划船。记者天真地想：既然世人如此神志清醒。为何还有人把划船视为赏心乐事呢？划船可不是乐事，而是穷凶极恶的惩罚。即令神志不清的怪人，也决不会得出别的结论，只能把划船看作是对肌肉的恐怖，对脊背的犯罪。记者向船上的人概要讲述了他对划船的乐趣的看法，面色疲倦的加油工十分赞同地笑了笑。顺便插—句，加油工在沉船之前，曾在轮船的机房里值过两次班。 　　“慢慢划吧，伙计们，”船长说。“别把劲儿使光了。假使我们要冲浪抢滩的话，你们还得使出全身的力气，因为我们肯定还得游上岸。慢慢来吧。” 　　陆地惭渐打海上升起。由—条黑线变成一条黑线和一条白线——原来是树木和沙滩。后来船长说，他能看出岸上有座房子。“那一定是收容所，”厨子说。“他们不久就会看见我们，出来搭救。” 远处的灯塔高高耸立。“守塔人要是用望远镜隙望的话，现在应该能看见我们了，”船长说。“他会通知救护人员的。” 　　“其他小船还不可能有到岸报告这次失事的，”加油工低声说，“不然，救生船早就出来救我们了。” 　　慢慢地，陆地由海上隐隐浮现了，显得十分优美。风又来了，由东北风变成东南风。最后，一个新的声音传进船上人的耳朵。那是惊涛拍岸发出的低沉隆隆声。“这下子我们无法抵达灯塔了，”船长说。“把船头稍许向北转一转，比利。” 　　“稍许向北转一转，船长。”加油工说。 　　于是，小船把船头再次转到顺风方向，船上的人，除了划手之外，都在望着海岸逐渐变大。由于陆地在望，疑虑和恐惧从他们心里消逝了。大家还在全神贯注地驾驭着小船，但却无法压抑心头默默的喜悦之情。—个钟头之后，他们也许就抵岸了。 　　他们的脊骨已经完全习惯于在船上保持平衡，现在驾驭起这条烈马似的小船，就像耍马戏的一样熟练自如。记者以为自己浑身湿透了，可他偶然往大衣上口袋里一摸，竟发现里面有八支雪茄。其中四支被海水浸湿了，四支安然无恙。搜了一阵之后，有人找出三根干火柴。于是，四个漂流者便贸贸然地驾着小船，心想自己即将得救，眼里闪耀着自信的光芒。他们一面抽着大雪茄，一面评判着世人的善与恶。每个人都喝了些水。四　　“厨子，”船长说，“在你所说的收容所附近，似乎连个活人的影子都没有。” 　　“是的，”厨子答道。“奇怪，他们没看见我们！” 　　一大片低沉的海岸展现在他们眼前。岸边是些低矮的沙丘，项上长着黑黝黝的草木。拍岸浪的轰鸣声清晰可闻。有时，一阵巨浪卷上海滩的时候，他们可以看见那白色的浪尖。一幢小屋在天边显出黑色的轮廓。南边，纤细的灯塔将它小小的灰色塔身升高了。 　　潮水、风和海浪冲着小船向北旋转。“奇怪，他们没看见我们。”那几个人说。 　　拍岸浪的轰鸣变模糊了，可是那声调仍似雷鸣，声势浩大。当小船在汹涌澎湃的巨浪上颠簸时，那几个人就坐着倾听这轰鸣声。“我们肯定要翻船。”每个人都这么说。 　　事实上，无论哪个方向，二十海里之内是没有救生站的。然而那几个人并不了解这情况，于是便对国家救护员的视力进行恶毒攻击。四个人怒眉瞪眼地坐在小船上，编造起形容词来都能创纪录了。 “奇怪，他们没看见我们。” 　　先前那股轻松愉快的心情完全消失了。他们的头脑变敏锐了，很容易想象出无能、盲目以及胆怯的种种表现。前面就是人烟稠密的陆地的岸边，可是那儿却了无人迹，真叫他们悲怆至极。 　　“唉，”船长终于说道，“我想我们得自己试试看了。假若我们在这儿呆得太久，等船沉之后，谁也没有力气游水了。” 　　于是，划桨的加油工掉转船头。径往岸上划去。猛然间，大家的肌肉绷紧了，心里也思索开了。 “假使我们不能都上岸，”船长说，“假使我们不能都上岸，我想你们几位知道把我完蛋的消息送到什么地方去吧？” 　　随即，他们匆匆交换了住址和叮嘱。至于谈到感想，那可是充满勃然大怒。这些感想成可归纳如下：“假使我要淹死——假使我要淹死——假使我要淹死的话，七位疯狂的海神啊，为什么又让我漂泊这么远，眼巴巴地凝视着沙滩和树木呢？我给带到这儿来，难道仅仅为了在我正要细嚼人生的神圣乳酪时，就把我的鼻子扯掉吗？简直是荒谬绝伦。假如命运女神这个老蠢婆子只会来这—套，那就应该夺掉她司掌人类命运的权利。她是个连白己的意图都搞不清的老太婆。假使她决定要淹死我，她为何不在一开始就下手，省得我吃这么多苦头呢？整个事情都是荒谬的。……但是，不，她不会存心要淹死我的。她不敢淹死我。她淹不死我。搏斗了这么久，不可能。”随后，那人也许会情不自禁地对云朵挥挥拳。“好吧，就淹死我好啦，不过，听我怎么诅咒你吧！” 　　此刻涌来的巨浪更可怕了。它们好像随时都要爆发，把小船打翻在喧腾的浪花之中。浪涛开始发言之前，总要先发出一阵长长的隆隆声。凡是不习惯于海上生活的人，都不会断言那小船能及时地攀上那些峻峭的浪峰。海岸仍然很远。加油工是个机灵的冲浪船夫。“各位，”他急促地说，“船维持不了三分钟了，我们离岸太远，没法游水。船长，我是不是再把船划到海上去？” 　　“可以，划吧！”船长说。 　　这做加油工，凭着一连串奇迹般的快速动作，以及麻利稳健的驾船技术，终于从那激浪中掉转船头，又安然划回海上。 　　当小船颠下浪洼向更深的水面冲去时，船上一片沉寂。接着，有人忧郁地说：“无论如何，他们现在一定从岸上看见我们了。” 　　海鸥顶着风，向着灰茫、凄凉的东方斜飞而去。从东南方刮来一阵狂风，夹着漆黑的云和砖红色的云，犹如房子失火冒烟似的。 　　“你们觉得那些救护人员怎么样？难道他们不是好人？” 　　“奇怪，他们还没看见我们。” 　　“也许他们以为我们在这儿闹着玩呢！也许他们以为我们在钓鱼。也许他们以为我们是该死的傻瓜。” 　　那是个漫长的下午。湖水改变了方向，硬把他们往南推，风浪却将他们向北冲。远在前方，海岸线、大海和天空形成一个巨角，那里有些小点点，似乎表示岸上有个城镇。 　　“圣奥古斯丁吧？” 　　船长摇摇头。“离蚊子湾太近了。” 　　他们一起坐在同一个座位上，一人划一把桨。然后，加油工划起双桨；随后，记者划起双桨；接着，是加油工；再接着，又是记者。他们划着，划着。这事最棘手的，是轮到靠在船尾的那个人划桨的时候。说实在话，从母鸡屁股底下偷鸡蛋，也比在那小船上换个座位来得容易。首先，船尾的人将手顺着座板往前滑动，小心冀翼地挪动身子，犹如他是法国的细瓷一样。然后，坐在划桨位子上的人将手顺着另—面座板划动。一举一动都得提心吊胆。当这两人战战兢兢地擦身而过时，全船的人都警惕地注视着那滚滚而来的波涛，船长大声减道：“注意！当心些！” 　　不时涌现一簇簇褐色的海藻，好像海岛，好像小块小块的土地。显然，海藻不在向任何方向移动。实际上，它们是静止的。它们告诉船上的人，他们的小船正在朝陆地缓缓前进。 　　“是，船长。”厨子兴致勃勃地答道。三　　在这大海上建立起来的微妙的手足之情，很难用笔墨加以形容。谁也没说情况如此。谁也没提起过这种手足之情。然而，船中确实存在着这种友情，因而使每个人感到温暖。他们是船长、加油工、厨子和记者，四个人结成了朋友——超乎寻常地、更为奇妙地牢牢联结在一起的朋友。受伤的船长靠在船头的水罐子上，说起话来总是低声细语，平心静气的，别看他船上的三个人是杂凑在一起的，他决不可能指挥比他们更心甘情愿、更欣然从命的船员了。他们不只是认识到如何最有利于共同的安全。这其中的确有一种属于个人的、发自肺腑的特质。除了对船长的忠诚，还存在着这般的友谊。就拿记者来说，他—向所受的教育是用冷服看人，此刻甚至认为这种友谊是他平生最美好的经历。然而，谁也没有说过情况如此。谁也没有提起过这种友情。
